Suzy & the Fox Family In July, the Fox family came to the SPCA looking for a new addition to their family of five. They specifically wanted a small dog to be a companion to their younger son, tenyear-old James. While the dog would be a shared responsibility for the family, James has a genetic mutation that causes a movement disorder and global developmental delays. Since James uses a wheelchair to get around, the Foxes were looking for a dog who would not be startled or intimidated by his wheelchair.

Shelter staff suspected that Suzy would be the right dog to complete this loving family. It was love at first sight!

“Suzy was the first dog we met, and we fell in love right away, as she was perfect for our family! While a little shy at first, she has fit right in, and we find it hard to remember life without her. She goes everywhere with us and even enjoys riding in James’ lap, which he loves. Her favorite thing to do with any family member is to cuddle up on the couch whenever possible!”

We are thrilled to have a hand in facilitating connections like these. We want to help all families find matches like Suzy!

Welcome!

But trust me, you have changed the lives of pets and shelter staff.

While 2020 brought its challenges, what I will always remember is the incredible support our community showed for the animals in our care. People opened their hearts and homes to adopt and foster pets from the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. From sickly kittens to frightened dogs, every pet was welcomed. From me and the staff of the SPCA, thank you to everyone who supported us through 2020. You will never see the tears of joy from an Animal Care staff member because you just adopted their favorite long-stay dog. You’ll never hear the shouts throughout the shelter when you take a senior cat to foster.

And, of course, I need to express appreciation to everyone who donated in 2020. We know that everyone struggled this past year. Your support made it possible for us to place 3,758 pets into homes, the highest number of adoptions in the 107-year history of the organization. You made it possible for us to achieve an annual live release rate of 97%, our highest rate on record. We also took in 4,557 animals, which is our highest intake rate since 2007. Your gifts were truly lifesaving in 2020, and we are not slowing down in 2021.

One of our main goals is to keep pets out of the shelter and with their owners, which means addressing common surrender reasons, such as issues accessing veterinary care for pets. For 2021, we have doubled the number of Microchip & Rabies Clinics offered and tripled the number of Compassionate Care Clinics in order to serve more of our community members during these challenging times. In addition to our Pet Food Pantry and the educational support offered by our staff, we believe that

providing these clinic services will result in healthier and happier pets.

Another goal is to set the pets in our care up for success in their adoptive homes. A common reason that pets are returned is that the new owners don’t feel equipped to handle pet behavior. From a cat not using the litter box to a dog barking at every new sound, these issues can quickly overwhelm an adopter. In 2021, we will focus on developing our behavior program to better help cats and dogs while they’re in the shelter and once they’ve been adopted. We all need a little help sometimes, and soon we’ll be able to provide the behavior

support that pets and people need.

Father Stripes

Father Stripes had been in our care since March 2019. His adopter, Rebecca, fell in love with him in March 2020, just days before he hit his one-year shelter anniversary. We are so happy he gets to spend his golden years getting spoiled in a loving home!

kitty at the time. So I basically stalked him online for a few months before finally getting to meet him. I was looking for a companion for myself as well as my 23-yearold kitty, and I have a thing for old, grouchylooking tabbies, so it was a match made in heaven!”

About Us Founded in 1914, after unofficially operating out of the basements and garages of concerned citizens since the early 1900s, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA has come a long way. In 1955, the SPCA acquired eight acres of land with a chicken coop, which, with some conversion and remodeling, became the first animal shelter in the region. Over the next 40 years, the shelter building was never remodeled and became a hazard. In the late 1990s, it no longer met state building code requirements and was on the verge of being shut down.

Planning for a new facility began in 2000. In 2004, after a community-wide capital campaign, the SPCA moved into our current home: a 32,000-square-foot building on a six-acre campus, which houses one-third more animals than the former facility and contains a veterinary surgical suite.

The improvements to the facility and a commitment to saving lives allowed the SPCA to increase the number of animals treated and placed in foster care. The SPCA was better able to treat and find homes for many sick and injured dogs and cats as well as older, blind, or deaf animals or those with unique needs.

In 2016, the SPCA had been at the forefront of lifesaving efforts for over a decade.

Looking into the future, we knew it was time to expand our lifesaving efforts to pets living outside the shelter’s walls. Our vision for a mobile unit became a reality thanks to a $73,500 challenge grant from the Perry Foundation and our community of generous supporters.

The Compassionate Care-A-Van has made it possible for the SPCA to rescue animals near and far. Our priority is to support our neighboring shelters, and in 2020 the SPCA rescued 1,204 pets from within Virginia.

When Hurricane Laura hit in August, we were able to assist with rescue efforts. In total, we rescued 2,216 animals in 2020, more than ever in a single year of the history of the SPCA. We are proud to have started a transport relationship with Rescued Pets Movement, allowing us to save homeless pets from Houston, which has one of the worst animal overpopulation issues in the country. The SPCA made 212 rescue missions in 2020, transporting animals from overcrowded shelters where the animals were in danger of being euthanized.

The SPCA is fortunate to have the resources and ability to help animals in need in our region and nation. Without the Compassionate Care-A-Van, an amazingly dedicated foster family network, staff, volunteers and a very generous and supportive community, the rescue missions would not be possible!

Clinics provide a wellness exam, rabies vaccinations and routine wellness care at reduced fees. Clinics are held the second and fourth Sundays of every month.

We sell lifetime city dog licenses for Charlottesville. Proof of a current rabies vaccination is all you need to bring with you.

Hugo aka Meatloaf Hugo came to the SPCA as an owner surrender with multiple significant health concerns. He had a loud heart murmur, enlarged lymph nodes all over his body, severe skin disease and ear infections.

During treatment, our veterinarians discovered that Hugo also had severe cardiac disease.

Hugo spent time in several loving homes where his caregivers doted on him and helped administer lifesaving care. Hugo thrived in foster care, and his fosters became great advocates for him.

Hugo was referred to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for an echocardiogram and consultation with the cardiologist. He was diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus and severe left-sided heart disease. Thanks to the funds raised by our amazing community, Hugo was able to have heart surgery!

Hugo was adopted by the McCoys on November 30, ten months after arriving in our care. There were some dark times when we wondered whether he would become a hospice case and what his longterm quality of life would look like. He exceeded expectations from top to bottom, and his new dad reports that he is still going strong!

“We renamed Hugo Meatloaf, which he has really taken to! Since we’ve brought him into our home, he has settled in, almost like he has always been here,” his new dad says.

“He and his new sister, Pepper, tend to play a few times a day and get daily hour-long walks. He makes friends with every dog he meets, and he gets along really well with our cat, Ollie. He hasn’t shown any signs of his medical condition slowing him down at all! We are so happy to have him and love his personality. He fits in very well with our family.”

Behavior Sometimes shelter animals need a little extra help as they transition into home life.

That’s why, in addition to finding loving families for the animals who come into our care, the SPCA provides post-adoption behavioral support. From follow-up phone calls and emails to home visits, our staff ensures that new pet owners have all the resources they need to help their cats and dogs settle into their new homes. If adopters have questions about housetraining, litter box issues or introducing resident pets to their new friends, we’re here to provide advice and encouragement.

The goal is for pets and their people to thrive together, and in 2021 we are looking forward to expanding our behavior program.

The SPCA also partners with local dog trainers to provide extra behavioral support to dogs who need it. In 2020, we sent four dogs to live at Muddy & CO, a board-andtrain facility in Northern Virginia. While at Muddy & CO, our dogs learn to live comfortably among other dogs, interact with new people and sleep quietly in their crates. They also go on some fun adventures, from field trips to pet stores to swimming sessions in the backyard pool.

After living in a trainer’s home, dogs like Bagel, the Rottweiler who we found out was great with other dogs once he went to Muddy & CO, and Small Fry, a deaf pup who needed a calmer environment, settle into their forever homes more quickly and more comfortably. We’re grateful for the community support that allows us to save dogs who need behavioral intervention before they are ready for their families.

Community Cat Program In 2011, the SPCA, in partnership with the city and county, launched the Community Cat Program, a program aimed at reducing the number of unwanted kittens being born in the area. In locations with community (free-roaming) cat populations, the staff works with caretakers to trap their outdoor cats and kittens. Through TrapNeuter-Return, we are able to provide these felines with necessary vaccinations and health checks before sterilizing them and returning them to their homes. The SPCA provides this resource at no cost and works diligently with members of the public to help manage the community cat population.

The ultimate goal of the Community Cat Program is to reduce the population of uncared-for felines by ensuring all owned cats are spayed or neutered and that freeroaming cats are trapped, altered and returned to their habitats by their caretakers.

The SPCA provided sterilization surgeries and veterinary care for 508 community cats in 2020. We saw an 18% decrease from 20192020 in the number of stray felines entering the shelter. Since we started the Community Cat Program in 2011, the feline stray intake has dropped by 63%, allowing us to increase feline transport to save more lives!

SPCA Rummage Store Rummage sales to benefit the homeless animals in the care of the SPCA have been around for a long time, starting with the first rummage sale in 1940, which raised $40. For 60 years, the rummage sale was a six-week-long annual event. As the sale grew in popularity, it raised more and more funds necessary for the care of the SPCA animals. In 2007, a coalition of board members and staff opened the first brickand-mortar SPCA Rummage Store on Preston Avenue. After nearly a decade, the store outgrew its original location and moved to Seminole Square Shopping Center in 2016.

The larger space has allowed staff to accept more items, due to an expanded area for the sorting and organizing of donations, and it has allowed for specialty sections within the store, such as the popular Boutique. The Rummage Store continues to be a popular revenue-generating arm of the SPCA. In 2020, despite being closed for two-and-ahalf months, the SPCA Rummage Store generated 10% of the SPCA’s revenue!

By implementing creative ideas and through hard work, the Rummage Store’s staff and volunteers have made the store a staple for shopping in Charlottesville.

New items are always arriving, and prices drop on older items, ensuring that there’s always a reason to stop by the SPCA Rummage Store and support the shelter!

The SPCA Rummage Store is located at 364 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Second Annual Critter Lift On October 10, 2020, the SPCA Rummage Store held its Second Annual Critter Lift & Rummage Store Extravaganza. Fresh merchandise was set out, Joe Thomas of WCHV-AM was broadcasting live, there were hourly door prizes and adoptable dogs were on-site. You may have seen the scissor lift outside the store!

It was a fantastic day for people to support the pets at the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. Every purchase made at the SPCA Rummage Store goes to care for the homeless animals at the SPCA. And on that day, over $9,000 was generated through purchases at the store!

Additionally, visitors filled two box vans with donations for the shelter, such as cat food, bleach and dog treats. It was wonderful to have such a show of community support!

Volunteers & Fosters

Featured here are just a few of the incredibly dedicated volunteers who are an integral part of the SPCA family. We could not have survived 2020 without them. Pets entered foster care 4,251 times in 2020, with 2,032 pets getting adopted directly from foster care. (That accounted for 54% of adoptions!) Fosters offer animals nurturing and feeding when very

young, as well as socialization, training, a break from the shelter and time to recover and heal after surgery. Our marvelous volunteers have been so resilient this past year. With restrictions in place to limit the number of people in the building, they have found a myriad of creative ways to continue to support the pets in our care.

Pammy

Pammy was brought in as a stray in July.

She seemed to be an overall healthy, happy kitten, but we noticed that she sort of stumbled. She was diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia, a congenital neurological condition that affects cats’ balance and fine motor skills. It sounds scary but is not progressive or lifethreatening. There are varying degrees of cerebellar hypoplasia, and Pammy’s condition is fairly mild.

She is truly living her best life wobbling around her new foster-turned-forever home with Danielle!

“We officially adopted her around Thanksgiving, and she was hands-down the best part of 2020 for us!” Danielle says. “She walks, runs, plays, eats and uses the litter box all on her own. She is incredibly affectionate and sleeps with us every night.

We absolutely adore her and could not be more thrilled that she is a part of our family.”

Meet Our Staff What can we say except that the SPCA’s employees showed incredible resiliency in 2020?

This talented and diverse group of over 70 employees all share the same passion, dedication and commitment to helping the thousands of animals who come through our doors each year. With over 30 different positions, the staff members work tirelessly as part of a team, all with the shared goal of improving the lives of animals. Jobs range from caring for each animal’s needs and finding each a loving home to working at the SPCA Rummage Store to organizing fundraisers that support the many lifesaving programs at the SPCA. Each person plays such an important role in serving our community’s pets and our organization’s mission. Working with animals is a dream job, but animal welfare is also a very challenging and emotional industry. Staff work long days, the work is hard and dirty, and tears of joy and sadness are shed, but performing lifesaving work is just one of the numerous rewarding aspects. Healing animals’ wounds, both physically and emotionally, and seeing them run into the arms of their new adopters make us want to work that much harder.

Hallie

When Annalisa and Annis arrived to pick up their second foster dog, they were a bit apprehensive about Hallie. However, they took a chance on her because they sensed that there was more to her than meets the eye. This gorgeous bulldog has two modes: fierce diva and “sweet ball of mush.”

The trio quickly bonded, and Annalisa and Annis learned that Hallie is the definition of unconditional love. She wanted nothing more than to be close to her people and loved to sleep in their bed, accompany them on car rides (to bark at passing trucks, of course) and then snooze the day away in their laps. “Hallie spent most of her time sleeping (and by that, I mean snoring as loud as my 64-year-old father with sleep apnea) and passing gas. After Hallie recovered from a double hematoma and a benign mass removal in her stomach, her carefree attitude warranted massive respect. Despite her enormous size and intimidating demeanor, she loved warm cuddles.”

Annalisa and Annis felt validated in taking a chance on Hallie because there is so much to love about her!

Due to Hallie’s sometimes-challenging nature, Annalisa and Annis were worried that it would be hard to find her a home. Luckily, Randy and Angela, two lifelong bulldog lovers, were willing to be patient with Hallie’s quirks. Though their first meeting wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, they trusted that she would soon be just as loyal and loving as she was with her foster parents.

Thank you to Annalisa and Annis, along with ALL of our fosters, who are such patient caretakers and strong advocates for their foster pets.

Vet Save Stories

Vet Cost: $1,235

King

Condition: On intake, King had many concerns, most related to his breed, including chronic skin, eye, foot and ear disease, as well as a broken tooth.

Treatment: King had surgeries to correct the bilateral prolapsed gland of the third eyelid, commonly known as “cherry eye.” He was treated for his skin infections and had a tooth extraction.

Today: After spending time in foster homes, King was adopted! He had an instant connection with his adopter.

Julep

Condition: Julep arrived at the shelter as a stray. During Julep’s exam, our vets heard a moderate heart murmur.

Vet Cost: $749

Treatment: Julep went to Virginia Veterinary Services for an echocardiogram, from which it was determined that it was safe to clear her for adoption.

Today: Julep was adopted by her foster!

Turtleneck

Condition: Turtleneck came to the SPCA as a stray with an extensive, open wound on his neck.

Treatment: The 12-centimeter wound was surgically repaired three times, and Turtleneck remained under vet care to ensure that the wound healed appropriately. He wore a little shirt to prevent him from scratching the wound and thus earned his name.

Vet Cost: $423

Today: Turtleneck was a staff favorite during his time at the SPCA. We were all so happy to see him go into a loving home!

Roy Condition: Roy was hit by a car and had severe injuries to both of his hind limbs. His right hip was dislocated, he had damage to the ligaments in his right knee and his left femur was fractured.

Treatment: Roy went to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for an internal reduction and stabilization of his hip, as well as bone plating to repair his fractured femur. Roy recovered in the SPCA Clinic to control how much he moved around.

Today: Roy was adopted by his foster, who fell in love with him.

Vet Cost: $5,050

Events In 2020, the SPCA had to move quickly to reimagine our two largest fundraisers as virtual events. We are so grateful to everyone who gave through these events to support our animals in need.

The Seventh Annual (Virtual) bow-WOWwalk generated over $46,000 to benefit the animals at the SPCA!

CRITTER BALL The 2020 Critter Ball was a streamed event featuring a live auction and raised over $144,000 in net proceeds to benefit the animals at the shelter! People were able to bid on incredible live auction packages and donate toward key initiatives, including our Rescue Fund and Spay/Neuter Appeals. The evening featured interviews with adopters, as well puppies and kittens in the studio helping with the auction!

BOW-WOW-WALK Less than a month before the planned K-9 2.5K on the historic Downtown Mall of Charlottesville, we pivoted to a virtual bowWOW-walk. People were encouraged to walk their dogs, submit videos for pet

Fernanda Fernanda, a sweet senior cat, has a long history with the SPCA. In 2018, she was brought in after being abandoned when her owners moved. She was adopted from us but unfortunately was returned a year later due to no fault of her own. She lived here until Valentine’s Day 2020, when Jinchao walked in looking for a foster cat and a beautiful love story began. While Fernanda was here, she was being treated for a variety of senior ailments, but she has been thriving in her foster home!

Though she was shy at first, it didn’t take long for Fernanda to warm up to her new caretaker. Now, Jinchao reports that Fernanda communicates her needs simply by gazing into Jinchao’s eyes. It often takes senior cats longer to find their adoptive homes, but Jinchao is committed to keeping Fernanda for as long as she can.

“My friends would say that Fernanda is so lucky to have me to give her good foster care,” Jinchao says. “But from my end, I couldn’t be more grateful to have Fernanda with me during such a strange year full of uncertainty and solitude.”

FAQs Is the SPCA affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations?

Like most local animal shelters, the SPCA receives no ongoing funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. If you want to help the animals in your community, give to your local community shelter or animal welfare group.

What is the SPCA’s policy when accepting pets?

Our doors are wide open to dogs and cats from Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, regardless of age or health.

The SPCA is a no-kill organization. What does that mean?

We are committed to saving all healthy and treatable animals in our care, regardless of how long they’ve been with us. We are a progressive, solution-oriented animal welfare organization dedicated to saving lives.

What is the SPCA’s annual live release rate?

We collect and report our shelter statistics using a nationally recognized data matrix called the Asilomar Accords. We track and compare our progress through our annual live release rate, which is the data of live outcomes for all cats and dogs who leave our care. In 2020, we were proud to achieve a live release rate of 97%.

Is the SPCA a pound?

The SPCA is defined by the Code of Virginia as a “private animal shelter” whose purpose is finding permanent adoptive homes for animals. We also serve as the contracted public animal shelter for Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville to impound or shelter seized, stray, abandoned, unwanted or surrendered animals.

We are under contract and receive funding to serve as the city and county pound.

Philanthropy In 2020, 4,393 generous donors supported our animals.

The SPCA relies on donations to purchase much-needed equipment, hire top-notch staff, and provide crucial programs and services to the community. None of the work we do would be possible without the various forms of giving we receive. Ways you can give include donating to our Rummage Store, making a monthly recurring gift, giving in memory/honor of a pet or person, or even just offering a general contribution. You can also sponsor a pet, adopt a kennel or purchase one of our memorial bricks.

Whichever way you have offered support in the past or choose to contribute in the future, we thank you and value your gift, as do the many animals helped every day at the SPCA.

Legacy Giving One of the most crucial gifts we receive is a legacy gift — a planned gift that costs donors nothing now but will provide essential support to the SPCA and our programs for years to come. In 2020, legacy gifts made up 6% of our total donations and were vital to our operations, enabling the highest standard of care for thousands of animals in need.

There are many ways you can ensure your legacy at the SPCA. You can choose to name us in your will or to bequeath to us a portion of your estate. You can give in the form of stocks, bonds or property, or you can arrange a gift annuity, a trust or the transfer of unneeded life insurance.
