All winners at charity battle

On Sunday afternoon, at the end of The Battle For The Bay, event organiser Phil Smith summed up what had been a weekend festival of fun, football and fundraising, in which everyone came out a winner. “So many teams, so many people, so many games.”

The recently “retired” president of Golden Bay Association Football Club (GBAFC) was speaking shortly after announcing the home senior side as winners of the tournament, and thanking all those who had participated and supported the event.

The two-day tournament began on Saturday at 9.30am when the first three matches kicked off simultaneously at the Rec Park. During the day, a total of two dozen 30-minute matches were contested with each team playing four games, followed by a similar schedule of slightly shorter fixtures on Sunday.

The 12 participating sides from across the region, were joined on Saturday by Special Olympics team The Firebirds and a squad of Tākaka rugby players who had switched codes for the day. One of those in the mixed team, club senior coach Hamish Hills, said although

they were “not good soccer players” they had enjoyed playing with a round ball for a change. “It was good fun and for a really good cause.” The team even managed to register a win, but Hamish didn’t anticipate any of his players making the switch permanent.

Phil was very appreciative of their support.

“Those guys and gals are fabulous humans for joining in the fun.”

A very full day on Saturday finished with speeches, presentations and the raffle draw.

Underlining the main focus of the event, co-founder of Hope Is My Homeboy Rutu King-Hazel, who had just had a baby five days earlier, talked about the importance of looking out for each other and how her mental health and suicide prevention charity came about.

Amongst the presentations made, new GBAFC president Chris Thurston awarded Phil lifetime membership of the club, something Phil said would take time to sink in. “I don't know how to react to it, was very, very moving.”

The next morning, taking a breather on the sideline, Mapua Rangers club president Donna Griffith and her team were in good spirits. “It’s always a good vibe here,” said Donna adding

that the club was very keen to support the event. Her team had another reason to be cheerful, having won a good sportsmanship award, along with a voucher for Roots Bar which they had spent the previous evening.

Further along the sideline, the team from Tahuna were resting their tired limbs. Skipper Stu Mountain was full of praise for the event. “It’s been great; the community’s been fantastic, it’s a lovely setting for a tournament, and the organisation’s brilliant.”

In the meantime, the action continued on the two main pitches. On the top field, the young Pumas were ruffling feathers in a battle with the senior Tahuna Flamingos. Despite the age and size mis-match, the 13- and 14-yearolds gave the adults a good run for their money. Pointing out his side’s achievement of one win, two draws and three losses over the weekend, Pumas’ coach Flori Dahl said he was “very positive” about their prospects for the upcoming season.

In the early afternoon, the tournament reached its climax as the two top teams – both from Golden Bay – took to the pitch for a...

Myeloma Awareness

March is Myeloma Awareness Month, and mum-and-daughter team Chrissie and Jessica Moleta have been actively fundraising and sharing information about this form of cancer.

They spent last week at FreshChoice, Tākaka selling cupcakes, cuppas, raffles, and pretty bouquets created by Jessica, and, on Saturday, they hosted a “painting picnic” at Jessica's home.

Funds raised will be divided between Myeloma NZ, which is a great support to the Moleta family, and Rānui House in Christchurch – “a home away from home” for them and many other Golden Bay families during their time of need. It has "a vision to cure and a mission to care", and provides accommodation for patients and whānau undergoing life-saving medical treatments in the city.

When Jessica finishes her bright, colourful communal work of art, that visitors helped to create during the painting picnic, it will be donated to Rānui House. Myeloma is difficult to diagnose as there are a wide range of symptoms. It is a blood cancer affecting plasma cells, so initially it impacts the immune system. There is no known cure, and the disease affects about 3,000 New Zealanders, two of whom live in Golden Bay. It is the second most common blood cancer, with some patients living for many years. One of Myeloma NZ’s aims is to improve the quality of life and survival of people living with the disease, to advocate for more research funding, and to raise awareness and understanding among the public.

With the disease being so difficult to diagnose, the important message is that anyone with any concerns, should not put off seeing their doctor.

For those who missed Chrissie and Jessica's cake stall and raffles, donations can still be made at: https://givealittle. co.nz/org/myelomanz or https://bmct.org. nz/donate-to-ranui.

March may be Myeloma Awareness Month, but the above organisations need support every month of the year in order to help care for people facing serious illness.

We can help with that.

Award for farmer harvesting sunshine

ROSA VOLZ

Tucked away in the Tākaka Valley is an award-winning solar farm, quietly generating enough power to supply 310 homes year-round.

The solar farm has been running since March 2023 and the sheer scale is mind-blowing, comprising just under 3,000 north-facing panels standing 3.5 metres high, covering 2.5 hectares of farmland.

The solar farm is testimony to the determination and resilience of second-generation dairy farmer Hamish Hills and his family. “I couldn’t have done it without the hard work of my parents. Their work [building up the farm] has allowed us to do other things as well.”

Hamish has a background in strategy and large-scale construction projects, working predominantly in Australia. He moved back to the Bay eight years ago to raise his family and run the family farm, to “continue the legacy of mum and

dad’s hard work”.

Building the solar farm took three years of planning, followed by a three-month installation process, all of this alongside running a herd of 370 dairy cows; though Hamish is the first to point out that he has incredible support from his family and workers. From the moment the idea first germinated at the family dining table, it has been a steep learning curve. “When I first started, I knew nothing about solar or generating electricity,” he says.

Hamish’s patience and tenacity has paid off, as the solar farm is running to plan – turning sunshine into energy and pushing it into the national grid. One year in, Hamish has been honoured by the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce, beating other entries to win the 2024 Environmental Award.

Hamish’s advice for anyone that is thinking about undertaking a similar-size project, is that “it’s not easy, but it is incredibly rewarding”.

Along Tākaka-Collingwood Highway, between The Mussel Inn and Washbourn Road, a roadside cowshed boasts an OK GROW sign.

Meret Weiss has relocated her native plant nursery. Upon entering the appropriated propagation shed, a percolated mix of cow effluent and potting mix assaults the senses. It is a smell Meret says she has yet to get used to, although judging by the long rows of seedling trays and next-stage plants, she has spent many hours in the acrid arena.

Beyond the converted cowshed lies the actual nursery, an expansive concrete-based area that was once a dry pad "stand off” for cows. Now home to thousands of robust-looking native plants, the 660 square metre area is surrounded with shadecloth, a task Meret’s brother Reuben undertook.

Moving the nursery was a mammoth task; over 8,000 seedlings were shifted to the new site with assistance from Meret’s family “and some amazing volunteers”.

It was two years ago that Meret approached the farm trust and asked if they were open to her using the dairy shed. In November 2023 she and her helpers began the reconstruction,

recycling everything.

“We cut up all the stainless-steel troughs and flipped them. We had to carry them out, turn around and bring them back to make into potting benches,” explained Meret.

Reuben created a “hopper” so the potting mix can be delivered directly onto the benches from outside. A misting system was hooked up to irrigate the seedlings. “That was probably the biggest project – getting the irrigation going,” said Meret.

Volunteer helper Derek Hamblett has potted many thousands of tiny seedlings, finding it very therapeutic. Parttime nursery employee Gabby Hollis said, “It’s physically hard, but mentally calming... I love it.”

OK Grow’s philosophy includes eco-sourcing seeds, working to improve collection methods, storage, and growing them. This reduces handling and transport costs and the potential of disease spreading from one location to another.

Plants are available at very reasonable prices and wholesale orders for next year are available from www.okgrow.nz.

OK Grow nursery opens Easter Saturday and every following Friday and Saturday 9am-2pm.

They are the most popular pet turtle in the United States, the red-eared slider. With a lifespan of 50 years, owning one of these turtles is a big commitment and could be a two-generation undertaking. I was prompted to write about these turtles after my attention had been drawn to a Facebook post saying that a red-eared slider had been found in the Onekaka Estuary.

Strictly speaking, red-eared sliders are terrapins. In this part of the world a turtle is considered aquatic, a tortoise is a land animal, and a terrapin spends time in both habitats. Long considered one of the world’s worst invasive species, red-eared sliders are native to the warmer southern parts of the United States. They were allowed to be sold in pet shops in New Zealand because it was thought the climate here was too cold for their eggs to successfully incubate and hatch. As our climate warms the illegal dumping or escape of these pet turtles into the wild will contribute to sustainable breeding populations across the country.

Red-eared sliders are sold when they are small and cute. Within six years they grow to around 35 centimetres, about the size of a dinner plate. They have a preference to live in slow-moving water such as wetlands, ponds, rivers, lakes and drainage ditches. A threat to our ground nesting birds, their eggs, aquatic insects and plants and our native eels and fish, they are even recorded as eating ducklings. New Zealand’s predator problems started with rats, stoats and possums.

The question is: as temperatures rise will red-eared sliders become our next major pest?

Council: not standing for it

I wish to empathise with Gary Thorpe and his not standing for council (GBW, 22/3).

When we elect candidates for council we trust they will represent us. We read their candidate profiles, how they will listen to us, make responsible decisions, issuing statements like "making a council sound like its communities".

On being elected to be a councillor they have to make a declaration under the LGIOMA. This immediately forces their profiles and individuality to be abandoned. They leave "us" to become one of "them" (a slave to the system, and philosophy of TDC). We have now lost our representatives and any hope of them delivering their profile promises.

I offered myself to serve our community three times and was rejected. I should be thankful for that as all my energy would have been spent on fighting the "TDC them" and not representing "us".

Your opening paragraph in that letter says it all, including the closing one.

Parking prangs

At Christmas time, whilst parked on Commercial Street, a car was observed backing into mine damaging it. The driver fled and did not leave a note, and with only third party insurance I had to replace the headlight assembly.

On my return to Tākaka, and again parked on Commercial Street, another car backs into mine. This time no great damage and the driver apologised.

DOWN TO EARTH: Building healthy soil

Autumn is the season nature gives back, with leaves and plant residues returning to the soil. This is a great time to focus on feeding the soil in preparation for the spring-summer growing season. Here are eight tips to help build great soil.

1. Sowing green crops now (or earlier) protects bare soil over the winter. The larger the range of species, the better. When growing, living plants stimulate biological activity around the root zone. In early spring, by chopping them down, the crop’s greenery and root systems provide food for soil biology, which builds both soil structure and fertility. The same goes when market gardeners return growing areas into mixed pasture for two years to build soil health before cropping it again.

2. Growing a range of different crops together encourages a diversity of soil biology to grow, resulting in improved soil health.

3. Addition of compost, vermicaste (worm castings from the worm compost), or rotted manure around existing crops like Brassicas and other greens, not only provides them additional nutrients but also feeds the soil.

4. Similarly, top dressings of wood ash, fishmeal, or blood and bone, helps both growing plants and soil life.

5. In spare beds, adding the above along with lots of carbon –like hay, straw, crop residues (eg sweetcorn stalks) or rotted balage – forms what is referred to as “sheet mulching”.

6. Making compost piles on existing beds is what I do at home. This way the beds benefit from the huge addition of biologically active organic material. Once mature, the compost can be shifted to other beds as needed.

7. Take a soil test and apply natural minerals. The KinseyAlbrecht method of soil testing has proven results that help “get the house in order so the biology thrive”.

8. Lastly, avoid using pesticides (eg herbicides, insecticides,

and fungicides), as these negatively affect soil biology. Like nature, we need to practice giving back to the soil, or in this case paying forward in order to reap the benefits later on with healthy crops.

SOL’S GARDEN JOBS FOR APRIL

Vegetable care

Put cloches on frost-sensitive crops to encourage growth and maturation (eg young carrots and capsicums, respectively).

Prepare beds for sowing of broad beans and peas by removing weeds, soil loosening, and addition of minerals, especially calcium (eg lime or dolomite).

Prepare beds for upcoming plantings of garlic, broccoli, and greens. Feed soil and plant in firmly. Cloche to protect seedlings from bird disturbance (netting) or aid growth (Mikroclima).

perennials like chives. Integrate perennial herbs with fruit and vegetable plantings.

Harvest herbs for drying or seed for next year. Weed and mulch.

Fruit care

Net fruits to protect from birds, eg figs.

Support heavily laden branches, eg use Y props.

Harvest olives, late apples and pears, figs, black passionfruit, citrus, and feijoas. Store in cool, dry place.

Prune berries, remove old canes and train new ones.

Finish sowing orchard understory mixes.

– 12noon

Daniel Bruning - Diggs 027 307 8774 diggslimited@gmail.com

Harvest pumpkins when stalk and tendril go brown. Harvest kūmara, sun cure in high humidity (hothouse good), and store in straw or shredded newspaper.

Harvest seeds for saving and eating. Keep leeks weed-free and mulch.

Liquid-feed greens and spray Brassicas with Bt until white butterflies are gone.

Hothouse: Keep feeding crops. Remove dying plants. Make a compost heap to aid warming. Clean for better light. Add salads or green crops. Ventilate.

For transplanting: All seeds 18 and 22 April. Spring onions, red onions, and leafy greens (spinach, spinach beet, silverbeet, lettuce, endive, pak choi, Chinese cabbage, cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli) (best 16-17, 26-28 April). Herbs and flowers (also 15 and 25 April).

Sow direct: All seeds 18 and 22 April. Salads, spring onions (best 2, 20-21, and 29-30 April). Radish and turnip (also 21 and 23 April). Flowers (also 15 and 25 April).

Plant: Best 2-13 and 30 April. Salad greens, spinach, spinach beet, cabbages, cauliflower, and broccoli. Flowers, eg bulbs. Avoid gardening: new moon 9 April, and full moon 24 April. Herb care

Transplant rooted cuttings from last year. Do more cuttings now as you trim back herbs, eg rosemary.

Plant herbs such as parsley, or transplant self-seeded

Start planning an orchard or replace poor producers with resistant varieties.

Plant fruit trees when available. Stake positions ensuring adequate spacing. Pre-dig holes to check drainage.

Plant spring bulbs under trees.

Feed the orchard with minerals and woody compost. Prepare strawberry beds, replacing three-year-old plants with runners.

Cover young subtropicals like tamarillos with frost cloth and protect young trees in windy sites.

Spray all fruits with diluted seaweed. Spray citrus with copper oxychloride vs dieback and scab. Spray garlic and pyrethrum with neem oil on fruits like apples vs woolly apple aphid.

Spray lime sulphur or copper oxychloride on stone fruit trees vs diseases like canker.

General garden care

Irrigate to maintain soil moisture.

De-head perennial flowers.

Plant trees and shrubs.

Make leaf mould compost.

Spray roses, etc with copper vs black spot.

Trim shelter for better sunlight and airflow, and chip. Mulch ornamental beds with chippings or bark.

Take semi/hardwood cuttings. Use willow water to aid rooting.

Helping hands for holiday homes

Have a holiday home? Want better returns across the calendar year? Want locally owned management committed to local employment and business growth?

Want to deal with someone “on the ground” in the Bay that will look after your home like their own? Then take a look at Golden Bay Holiday Homes Limited (GBHH) – run by locals Mike and Katja England.

Drawn to the Bay for its safety and family-friendly lifestyle, world travellers Mike and Katja bring a wealth of practical experience to GBHH. Together the couple have renovated holiday houses and farms in Europe. Mike brings a broad range of skills from farming and working in trades – roofing, building, and practical work. Katja brings communications and softer skills with a background in hospitality, and her profession as an occupational therapist.

Says Mike, “Our vision for GBHH is a business model that returns revenue to the community by driving higher occupancy across the full year. Every visitor that we can attract from over the Hill is driving the local economy forwards.”

GBHH offers a full-service model. This includes photographing

and listing the property across global accommodation platforms, ensuring worldwide audience reach. The couple are on hand to assist with setting up the property to meet regulated standards and best practice, managing all guest communication, cleaning, linen service, maintenance, and renovations. “We focus on being transparent with homeowners about finances and offer a fairer price than big players.”

Customers Mark and Tracy own Parapara Heights and highly recommend the service; “Absolutely fantastic. GBHH were brilliant at setting up the [booking] platforms and administration – and it’s now ticking over nicely. Their communication and service are amazing – we looked around [at other providers] and they really stood out. We are attracting international visitors.”

GBHH has two summers under its belt, and with a solid listing base and a calendar of repeat customers, are ready to scale. Mike says, “The next step is to enable owners to manage their own bookings. Our goal is to have all homeowners come through our site, bypassing the big players. We will always go the extra mile to offer peace of mind.”

to share the news that our operational

has been accepted by the Department of Conservation (DOC). This is a crucial milestone for Pest Free Onetahua and we want to say thanks to everyone who contributed to its development. “The operational plan contains the detail for how we remove pests from Onetahua – and keep them out. Developing it was a joint effort, and we’re grateful for everyone’s skilled mahi, especially our Technical Advisory Group and Manawhenua ki Mohua," said Brian Alder, project lead.

Onetahua Farewell Spit is a Nature Reserve and demands a careful approach to ensure the large-scale pest removal actions meet conservation requirements. Our team is now working with DOC to make sure every step in the plan aligns with the reserves ecological sensitivity.

Scientists from Manaaki Whenua came to visit recently to investigate the effect pest removal will have on less-studied native species. They found skinks in numbers too low to study – but were delighted to discover mokomoko/Nelson green geckos in residence. The presence of these rare lizards further shows why removing pests is also important for the survival of Onetahua’s lesser-known inhabitants. Please note all lizard capture and handling were carried out with the appropriate permits and ethics approvals.

We’ve also started working with landowners in the wider project area, and in the coming months will install pest tracking devices on their land. This will help us understand pest numbers and movements before we put traps in. We’re grateful for their support as these key areas are part of the suppression zone; designed to stop pests from returning to Onetahua Farewell Spit once the predator eradication is completed.

EVENTS HAPPENING THIS EASTER

Full Moon Art Show

The Full Moon Artist Group is expanding its orbit with an Easter show featuring the work of school students alongside that of a wide range of local artists.

The show, which takes place in Pakawau Hall over three days of Easter weekend, builds on the success of last year’s inaugural exhibition (photo from last year's event above).

The list of exhibitors begins with the group’s committee members – painters Helen Coombs, Kate Heal and Robin Riley, and photographer Jenny Cooper – and continues with notable local artists Margaret Bell (felting and fabric art), John Weeber (photography and jewellery), Abby Farrow (jewellery), Erihapeti McPherson (photography, painting and jewellery), and painters Luke Heal, Melanie Walker and Sean Farrow.

The guest exhibitors this year are abstract artist and art tutor Elaine Robinson plus a group of around 10 emerging artists from Collingwood Area School.

Any funds raised from the exhibition – including a silent auction for a bespoke ceramic vase – will go towards angle lighting which is intended to further enhance the hall’s function as a versatile community resource.

Full Moon Art Show is at Pakawau Memorial Hall: Saturday 30 March, Sunday 31 March, 10am-3pm; Monday 1 April, 10am1pm. Koha entry.

Rockville Museum Steam Up

Rockville Museum opens its doors on Sunday for the traditional Easter Steam Up.

While one day is hardly enough to see everything at the Museum, there are a few special Easter highlights, including the opportunity to soak up the sight, sound and smell of old engines as they chug away, and to watch a blacksmith in action at the museum’s working forge.

Elsewhere, the vast collection of permanent exhibits ranges from vintage tractors, saddlery and farm machinery, to old radios, local history books and red telephone boxes.

After working up an appetite, visitors can head to the Pioneer Kitchen for scones, sausages and drinks.

Easter Steam Up Day is at Rockville Museum on Sunday 31 March, 10am-3pm. Donation on entry appreciated.

Vintage Clothing Extravaganza

Further up the Aorere Valley the Langford Store at Bainham is hosting its Vintage Clothing Extravaganza over the weekend.

Anyone seeking out boutique retro threads should head to the iconic store where collections of fine clothing from Parrot Moon, Meisje Vintage, Emma Tree Vintage and Ernest Attire will be on display, and for sale, all day Saturday and Sunday.

As well as providing the opportunity to check out some timeless fashions, a trip to the store also offers the chance to revel in the history of this famous institution, explore the fascinating memorabilia on show, and enjoy traditional homebaking with a refreshing beverage.

A Vintage Clothing Extravaganza is at The Langford Store, Bainham on Saturday 30 March, Sunday 31 March, 9am-5pm.

SLC Harvest Festival

But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Representing Golden Bay's four primary schools, more than 100 young swimmers gathered at the Golden Bay High School pool last Wednesday morning to compete in the annual Golden Bay Inter-Primary Swimming Sports.

Starting the day's events under overcast skies and a chilly 12 degrees, the swimmers were grateful that the pool was heated to an inviting 26 degrees. Thankfully, the weather and the temperature improved through the day – by mid-afternoon the sun was out, and summer had made a brief reappearance.

The more experienced and competitive swimmers kicked off their races with the most gruelling of the day’s events, the 3 x 33-metre medley, challenging their abilities with consecutive backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle lengths. With the toughest race out of the way, swimmers moved into the heats section, working their way through the morning with agegroup freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke races.

Following a short lunch break, the six fastest swimmers in each group of heats were recalled to battle it out in the finals.

A new system videoing each finish proved especially useful, with a number of races requiring the finish line recorders to refer back to slow motion and even frame-by-frame footage to call the placings.

With plenty of cheering during the races and at the finish line, placings in the finals were shared between all four schools.

Concluding the day’s events was the 4 x 33-metre relay, with mixed teams of swimmers competing fiercely for school bragging rights. To highlight the commitment to their school, one swimmer, Wolf King from Tākaka Primary School, even swam in two teams in the same race, swimming the first leg for one team before swimming the final leg for his school’s second team.

Once again, Central Tākaka School principal Steve McLean organised and led a very seamless competition. Supporting the running of the day’s events were staff from Tākaka Primary School marshalling and starting races, Collingwood Area School recording times and placings, and Motupipi School recording results and organising finalists.
