Hunters gather record haul

Conservation Order

An Environment Court report has recommended that a Water Conservation Order (WCO) be issued to safeguard water quality at Wakoropupū Springs and associated water bodies.

The report, issued on 28 July, marks a major milestone in a decade-long saga that has included two separate applications, a Special Tribunal and an Environment Court Hearing.

The applicant – Ngāti Tama ki Te Waipounamu Trust and Golden Bay resident Andrew Yuill – initially applied for a WCO in December 2013. That application was put on hold and the applicants were encouraged to further engage with Tasman District Council. The subsequent application, made in April 2017, was heard the following year by a Special Tribunal which, in 2020, recommended that the WCO be made. The matter then went to the Environment Court and, after four hearing sessions of two-five days held between May 2022 and April this year, Judge John Hassan has now issued his 314-page report to the Minister of Environment, supporting the Special Tribunal’s recommendations with modifications.

Based on extensive evidential findings and determinations, the report prescribes water quality standards for Main Spring and Fish Creek Springs, as well as placing responsibilities and duties on TDC to monitor and control through resource consents, permits and cease-take orders in the Wharepapa Arthur Marble Aquifer Recharge Area (WAMARA) – part of the Tākaka River catchment from which surface and ground water drains or percolates into underlying gravel and marble formations.

A bluebird weekend yielded record entries and results for the 26th annual Upper Tākaka Pig Hunt.

Locals and visitors (including one on horseback) gathered at the Upper Tākaka Country Club on Sunday to enjoy the sun, view the weigh-in and prizegiving – and have a few quiet beers.

The hunt is organised by locals and keen hunters Jonny Harwood, Cindy Rosser, and Amanda Brooks. Says Jonny of the record haul, “I have a feeling it must have been a good breeding season a couple years ago – as [this

and 39 children. The weather provided great hunting conditions.”

When The GB Weekly arrived mid-afternoon, it was standing room only at the weigh station, with “weigh masters” Geoff Trewavas and Duncan McKenzie working like Trojans to keep pace with the flow of large game entries, while Greg Reeve was weighing and counting possums, hares, and goats.

Inside the clubrooms there was an impressive range of prizes. “It’s all donated from the local community and from over the Hill,” says Cindy. “Every child entered receives a prize.”

Hunters are free to hunt in whichever geography they choose over the course of the competition, resulting in competitors targeting hunting grounds across the top of the South Island.

Sisters Tasmin and Riley Nelson-Knauf spent the weekend in Marlborough, catching a total of five pigs. “The best part was getting to the hut at the end of a hard day,” says Riley.

Mother-and-son team, Wendy Brooks and Kyle Gardiner, took out the Largest Red Stag Trophy for the second year running, “From our secret location near Murchison". Wendy shot the 105kg stag early on Sunday morning and was grateful to have son Kyle to help with the heavy lifting. “It was good Kyle was there, as I could never have fitted [the deer] in my tiny Corolla hatchback,” she jokes. Wendy’s achievement is all the more impressive as this is only her second season hunting. “I’m a little bit addicted,” she says with a grin.

Jonny kicked off the prizegiving with a speech and facilitated crowd control with...

The key water quality standards specified in the report are water clarity, along with concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved oxygen (DO) and dissolved nitrate (measured as NO3-N). The parameter that has probably been discussed more than any other during the protracted, formal process is nitrate. The concentration upper limit, measured at Main Spring and Fish Creek Springs, is initially set at 0.44mg/l, but reduces to 0.41mg/l from 1 January 2038. The report justifies these figures, explaining that “any higher limit would place the undisputed outstanding values of Te Waikoropupū at an unacceptable level of risk”.

The report also makes it clear that it is TDC’s duty to ensure these limits are complied with, although it may choose to...

Café opens at heart of new arcade

A touch of continental style has arrived in Tākaka with the opening of a compact, colourful arcade.

At the heart of the new development, and fronting the main street, sits Good as Gold Café, which is separated from retail and office spaces by a narrow walkway.

Owner Cheryl Elsey explains the philosophy behind the design. “We wanted to create a space that people would see as being shared.”

The mixed-use building has risen from the ashes of Bird's Emporium, which burned down in October 2020. Fire may have been the destroyer, but it also proved to be the great renewer, thanks to Cheryl and husband Ian who were determined to rebuild better on the site.

While a lot of interesting materials have been used in the construction, it is the thought behind the design that makes this project so special for Cheryl.

The walkway, for example, that links Commercial Street with Junction Street, was “inspired by the alleyways in Europe”, says Cheryl, who credits designer Rita Virtama with helping her turn the initial concept into reality.

In addition to inspiring the layout, Cheryl’s vision to represent “the old and the new” guided the selection of materials and colours used throughout. Even the names have been carefully chosen to create connections to the past.

“Good as Gold is a tribute to my dad [Trevor Boyes],” says Cheryl. “Many long-time locals will recall him saying this during his 40 years in business in Tākaka. It’s also a connection to our other two businesses, Feel Good Food and Goodness2Go.”

A tangible link to Bird's Emporium is expressed via wood salvaged from the ruins, which Ian, with help from Jack Davis, has repurposed. “All the wood inside the café is 130-year-old mataī – the table, bench seat and shelving,” says Cheryl.

The walkway is named in honour of her parents who “always had marigolds in the garden”. Walking through Marigold Way, a vibrant palette of green, red, orange, and purple strikes the eye, along with the variety of textured cladding materials, which includes weatherboard, plywood panels, and corrugated steel. Exploring the compact development also reveals a number of interesting nooks and crannies, offering all sorts of possibilities.

Good as Gold Café will initially serve “an extensive range of cabinet food and salads”, says Cheryl, adding that the menu will expand over time. “We’ll be introducing cook-to-order sometime soon. And there’ll be a few surprises over the next few months.”

Standing at the entrance to her stylish new premises, Cheryl reflects on the realisation of her vision. “I feel really proud to have created something unique.”

Good As Gold Café, Commercial Street, Tākaka. Open Monday-Friday 7am-4.30pm.

Staff Picks on show at Museum

The opening of Golden Bay Museum’s winter exhibition took place on 25 July, attended by interested locals. Manawhenua ki Mohua representatives Laurelee Duff and Eddie Ford carried out the preceding blessing ceremony.

Museum manager Karen Johnson stated in her opening address that she had found “nearly 30-something” items of interest, which she had to whittle down.

She explained the exhibition background.

“A lot of museums’ taonga, artefacts, don’t see the light of day unfortunately – through lack of display space and various other reasons, such as the vulnerability of items. We’ve decided we would have a Collection Selection… We did one a couple of years back on textiles; this one, we decided we’d do Staff Picks.”

Each of the three staff members selected five objects that piqued their interest. Their task was to state why they made the choice and explain a little of the historical background.

Archivist and researcher, Sally Gaffney, said she found it difficult because she rarely has anything to do with the actual objects. Her area of interest includes maps and writing; the latter she included in the form of a large ledger dating back to 1865.

Collections technician, Lee Rzoska, chose personal favourites that tie in with her own interests. A couple of her picks feature

an old movie theatre seat, and an original Bakelite Bournvita mug complete with lid and a whisk.

Everything is beautifully displayed, proving the experience and professionalism of those involved. Clearly Karen, Sally and Lee have had a lot of fun putting the Staff Picks together. Their friendly banter is expressed via the panels, particularly concerning a certain furniture item.

Upon entering the exhibition room, it is advisable to pause and read the text panels on the left. These explain the colour coding system, indicating which staff member’s choice each item is. Throughout the selection, each piece is accompanied by an explanatory text panel.

Karen is open to more ideas for future Collection Selections. The team hope to create these exhibitions annually. “Sometimes people come in and ask about things they haven’t seen for a while or express what they would like to see again.”

Staff Picks will run until 31 October, then another innovative exhibition will take place from December.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to work front of house, once a fortnight, during the busy summer months, is invited to pop in or contact Karen via email: info@goldenbaymuseum. org.nz.

...set lower limits through the regional plan.

Under the provisions of the WCO, should nitrate and/or DRP limits be exceeded, then “council must duly investigate potential and likely causes of that exceedance… [and] take such action as is practicably available in the exercise of its relevant powers”.

A similar obligation applies to low DO levels and reduced water clarity.

When The GB Weekly contacted TDC earlier this week to request a response, a council spokesperson explained that the environmental policy team were busy “poring over the document”, but were able to make the following interim statement: “We are still digesting the report and draft order to fully understand the implications for Tasman District Council and the community.

Given the draft order may be subject to an appeal process (parties have 15 working days to lodge an appeal) then we can’t really comment in detail on it.

However, the recommendation of a Water Conservation Order for Te Waikoropupū reflects the agreement from all parties involved that this is a very special waterbody and taonga for Mohua/Golden Bay, the Tasman region, and all of New Zealand.

We want to see the best outcomes for the Springs, the wider Tākaka Catchments, iwi and the community. We maintain our commitment to improve freshwater management in the Tākaka valley, to ensure existing good water quality and health is maintained and improved where needed.”

Rational debate needed on co-governance

I guess your coverage of the Motupipi Street "roadshow" and the attendant protests pretty much mirrored media coverage of same in other NZ towns. The article and accompanying photos were mostly sympathetic to the protesters cause as was the predictable correspondence which followed.

Co-governance is an extremely serious issue and emotive "roadshows" and fervent slogan-bearers are probably not the best vehicles to explore it with. There needs to be intelligent and rational debate. (Slogan-bearers seldom engage in this way). I, myself, am very uncomfortable with the concept. Not just for its own sake but further, it is a blatant and serious denial of the Treaty.

In Article 1 the chiefs cede sovereignty to the Crown. This is the most important part and without it the Crown would never have offered the rest. Equality for all was enshrined in those words.

Remove, then, the compelling element of racial correctness and the glaring dichotomy inherent in co-governance is hard to miss.

Community Board overstepped the line

Let me make it clear; I am not taking sides in this pro co-governance, stop co-governance argument. I am taking umbrage with the Golden Bay Community Board and their article in the latest issue of the TDC Newsline . In this, the Community Board states: “As a Board, we were sad to see the ‘Stop Co-governance’ tour happening and coming to Golden Bay. However, we were also happy to see our community pull together, and stand up and say, no, this is not who we are, this is not what we want.”

Now forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought there were more people in Golden Bay than the 100 or so people who took part in this protest, two of whom, according to the latest police report in The GB Weekly, were arrested for assault. Is this “our community pulling together”? Are these people really representative of the views of the whole of Golden Bay? Did the Community Board run some sort of survey on the inhabitants of the Bay that I have neglected to fill in? If the community was all pulling together and saying no, where were the other 4900?

The Golden Bay Community Board was elected to represent all of the people of Golden Bay. They are not expected to air their own personal views in a way that purports to represent the views of us all, without the views of us all being taken into account.

I’m sorry Community Board, I think you normally do a great job but, in this instance, I believe you have overstepped the line.

SENIOR FOOTBALL

All Golden Bay’s senior teams were involved in away fixtures last Saturday. But life on the road appeared to suit the Bay’s men and women who came home with two wins and a draw – that’s seven points from a possible nine.

Goats’ magnificent seven

Seven seems to be the magic number; in the previous week’s home game, the Goats put seven past Nelson Suburbs Academy, and they repeated the scoreline this week against FC Nelson 2nd XI. Not only is their attack firing on all cylinders, but the Goats’ defence is looking rock solid. For the second game running, the Bay side kept a clean sheet.

Final score: FC Nelson 2nd XI 0 vs GB Mountain Goats 7.

The win puts the Goats level on points with Division leaders FC Nelson Karenni.

Masterful Stingrays

In the Masters Division, Golden Bay Stingrays’ victory over Wakefield propels them into the top half of the table where they sit in fourth spot.

Final score: Wakefield FC 1 vs GB Stingrays 3.

Shield Maidens consolidate

The match between Golden Bay Shield Maidens and FC Nelson Diamonds ended all square, a result that consolidates the Maidens’ mid-table position in the Women’s Premiership.

Collingwood lose semi-final battle

GB Aorere v Nelson Suburbs FC Knights

For what turned out to be their final match of the season, Collingwood travelled to Greenmeadows last Saturday to take on Stoke in a Division 2 semi-final fixture.

Playing at home, the winners of this year’s round robin phase raced into a 12-0 lead after just seven minutes – an advantage they stretched to 19-0 on the 25 minute mark. Collingwood struck back with a try by Brett McKay on 32 minutes, converted by Liam Miller, but the home side scored again to take the halftime score to 24-7.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was tight, with neither side adding points, until Stoke scored a converted try to extend their lead to 31-7. Liam Miller struck back with a try for Collingwood but, minutes later, and with time running out, Stoke scored again to put the result beyond any doubt.

Final score: Stoke 38 vs Collingwood 12.

Speaking to The GB Weekly earlier this week, Collingwood coach Graeme Miller said it was “a tough game“ and conceded that the “well-drilled“ Stoke side “were too good for us“.

With Collingwood’s season now over, Graeme looked back on this year’s campaign, which he said had begun well, with a large squad of 29 players who started their training programme early. “We made a good start, winning games but, as the season progressed with one key player leaving and injuries, it began to

Something which he said also affected Collingwood’s campaign was the stop-start nature of the season due to a combination of bad weather and public holidays, which meant it had been difficult to build momentum.

On the plus side, even accounting for injuries, Graeme said there was “a large pool of diverse players in the squad” including

Collingwood's Boston Rountree in action last Saturday.

some based over the Hill which had made travelling to away games easier.

Graeme said he was very grateful to the local community for its support, turning up to games both home and away and helping financially. He also expressed his appreciation for those who make it possible to field a team week in, week out. “I want to thank the families and employers of the players who support them... And I want to specifically thank PhysEx for their continued support throughout the season.”

Turning his thoughts to next season, Graeme anticipates he’ll have another good-size squad to work with. “Numbers are looking good with a number of former players returning to play, and a few extras.”

Bay netballers outshoot Motueka Students compete

The annual fixture between Golden Bay and Motueka is a highlight in the netball calendar – and last Sunday’s action at Tākaka’s Rec Centre NBS Stadium didn’t disappoint.

The series of four high-energy, closely fought matches started at 10am with an U14s clash from which Golden Bay emerged 26-22 winners. In the next game, the home U19s won by a single point in a very tight contest. The Bay’s winning streak then came to a temporary halt when the U16s lost 18-21, but the competition ended on a high as the seniors powered back from a shaky first quarter to win by 39-29, the largest margin of the day.

With all matches completed, teams and supporters reconvened in the club rooms for refreshments and prizegiving.

After completing a Top of the South sports tournament, then a trials process, five Collingwood Area School (CAS) students were selected to represent their kura at the NZ National Area Schools’ Tournament in Rangiora last month.

This involved playing with and against the best players from area schools all over the country, in a range of sports. Tiana Olney and Claire Sparrow played football; Ben Rillstone – rugby and basketball; Natalie Iorns – netball A, volleyball, and football; and Bianca Honey – netball A, kī-o-rahi, and basketball.

Playing for the Top of The South region and competing against three other regions of Aotearoa, they participated in four days of games for all the sports. Top of the South took home the winning trophy.

On the last day, finals were held in each sport between teams picked from the South Island and North Island. All the Collingwood students were selected to play for South Island teams in this climax to the tournament, with the South Island emerging as overall winners. Tiana and Claire made the National New Zealand team for football, Ben made rugby, Natalie made netball A and volleyball, and Bianca made kī-o-rahi and netball A. Ben will now go on to take part in the Barbarians training camp in Hamilton in September.

The students would like to say an immense thank you to the whānau, sponsors, and the community for enabling them to go. Their incredible generosity is greatly appreciated. A special thanks to Sam Iorns, Tracey Rillstone, Rebecca Olney, and Pete Taylor, who coached and supported the students.
