Comparison with other road repairs, however, may provide some approximate indication of the timescale involved. One of the most recent projects undertaken by Waka Kotahi on SH60 at Birds Hill concerned the installation of a concrete kerb along the shoulder of the carriageway. That relatively simple task took several weeks, during which stop-go traffic control was operating, while another possible yardstick, the repair of the Tākaka Hill Road slip sites, took almost four years to Amongstcomplete.theother affected roads in the Bay, at the time of going to press, some were open but for residents only, including Falconer Road (Pōhara), Bird Road (Clifton), Rameka Road, Dry Road and Abel Tasman Drive (Wainui Hill). Other routes – Glenview Road, Totaranui Road, Awaroa Road and Cobb Road – remained closed.Beyond the Bay, there is some concern about potential problems on the Tākaka Hill Road. “There are two sites, on each side of the Tākaka Hill summit, that are currently being monitored for movement,” explained...

JO RICHARDS The election campaign will ramp up in Golden Bay next weekend when the hustings come to town. Two meet-the-candidates events, organised by local branches of Grey Power and Rural Women, will offer a golden opportunity to listen to, and question, those standing for election as ward councillor and district mayor. Both meetings are scheduled for Sunday 11 September, with the debate starting at 2.30pm in the Collingwood Area School hall. The second forum starts at 7pm at the Senior Citizens’ Hall in Tākaka. The confirmed list of hopefuls shows there are five candidates for Tasman District Mayor – Mike Harvey, Tim King, Richard Osmaston, Maxwell Clark and Aly Cook – and four contenders for the two ward councillor positions – Celia Butler, Chris Hill, Quinn Lake and James Wolfen-Duvall. One candidate for ward councillor, Phil Smith, hasThewithdrawn.meetings will follow an identical format, with all nine candidates invited to deliver a three-minute prepared speech, after which there will be time set aside for questions. Any questions, however, will need to be submitted in writing, either prior to or at the meeting, and may be addressed to all candidates, or selected candidates. There will be no questions allowed from the floor. Already elected unopposed, the four members of the new-look Golden Bay Community Board – Abbie Langford, Grant Knowles, Henry Dixon and Robert Hewison – have also been invited to speak at the meetings.NextFriday, two days prior to Sunday’s hustings, The GB Weekly plans to publish profiles of the four candidates standing for the two Golden Bay ward councillor positions. We also intend to publish short profiles of the four members of the refreshed Golden Bay Community Board.

Responding on Tuesday to an inquiry from The GB Weekly concerning the reinstatement of SH60 at Birds Hill, WKNZTA system manager Top of the South Andrew James said work was continuing to restore full road access but it was going to be a major task. “The site has been cleared for use by heavy vehicles today. However, fixing this section of the road and returning it to full use will take some time. The slip site requires extensive engineering and remediating to make the road stable.” He was unable to provide a completion date for the job. “We do not have an exact timeframe for how long this work will take to complete at this time.”

Birds Hill: The edge of the tarseal has been undercut and fallen down the precipitous bank of earth exposed by the slip.

Two weeks on from the rainfall event that caused widespread damage to Golden Bay’s roads, several routes remain closed or subject to ongoing traffic restrictions. Within the Bay, the most significant issue appears to be the reinstatement of SH60 at Birds Hill just beyond Waitapu Bridge on the way to Collingwood. The road was briefly closed following a serious slip, but opened intermittently to light vehicles until the end of last week, when vehicles up to 26 tonne and 8 wheels were also allowed access. On Tuesday afternoon, Waka Kotahi NZTA (WKNZTA) gave the green light to heavy lorries, meaning truck and trailer units such as stock trucks and milk tankers could travel through the site. The limited time-slots for vehicular traffic have stayed the same, however, with stop-go traffic flows at the following times each day: 8-9am; 12-1pm; 3-4pm; and 6pm-7am. When The GB Weekly was allowed access to the site on Tuesday, contractors were busy at both ends of a severely damaged stretch of the road. On the uphill side of the affected section, which extends for approximately 25 metres, a steep bank has been constructed from large rocks. On the seaward side of the road, the signs of the washout are all too evident; the edge of the tarseal has been undercut and fallen down the precipitous bank of earth exposed by the slip. At the base of the slip debris, including uprooted trees and scrub, lays scattered on the now-dried-up bed of what had been a torrent of mud and water. Adding insult to injury, the infamous Birds Hill bump has further encroached onto the carriageway necessitating the one-way traffic system to be extended almost as far as the Waikoropupū Springs junction.

Enrol and vote All those on the electoral roll should receive their voting papers in the mail between 16-21 September, but anyone not enrolled will need to request special voting papers from Tasman District Council’s deputy electoral officer Sandra Hartley.

“My art will help me help other people connect with others who feel the same – that they’re not alone,” says Kiki. Olivia’s photographic work will replace Kiki’s on 5 September until 22 September. The Puramahoi Hall near her home is a major feature of Olivia’s photographs. She enjoys making the run-down hall seem special and beautiful. “Anything can become beautiful,” says Olivia, “which is basically everything.” Olivia has been exploring all facets of digital imagery, learning Photoshop techniques and manipulating images to suit her theme. Amongst other techniques she has been testing spot colour, enhancing in her photos the contemporary repainted red roof of the old hall, “to bring in the new age”, while still trying to retain its historic profile. Art Vault, Art Bank, 57 Commercial Street Tākaka. Feeling everything all at once, paintings by Kiki Dixon, 25 August – 5 September. Photographs by Olivia Thomas, 5 – 22 September. Open 10am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

Two year 12 Golden Bay High School students, Kiki Dixon and Olivia Thomas, are the first to take up this opportunity, and will show their work in two separate solo shows over a month, one after the other, in the Art Vault.

There’s an exciting new initiative for emerging artists from Golden Bay High School. The Art Bank is offering free youth memberships to five selected students per year. This allows them to exhibit their work in the gallery and receive mentorship from Hahna Read, formerly from The Depot Art Space in Auckland. The Depot’s main goal was also nurturing emerging artists and community art.

Kiki opened first on Thursday 25 August with her set of monochromatic paintings, titled Feeling every thing all at once. The symbolism conveyed by the limited palette of black, white and grey directly reflects her feelings as a mixed heritage Japanese New Zealander. In her artist statement she says, “Black and white are opposite colours, and I feel I don’t belong in either of them. I belong in the grey, in between the two.” Multiple faces and facial features emerge from the darkness in certain lights, inviting closer viewing. “The two faces come from growing up in two different cultures at the same time, not being sure which one I belong to. But I can be both – two

Liz Thomas Sollys to the rescue I for one wish to state my immense appreciation for the rapid, professional response of Merv, and Ed Solly along with their team to open Birds Hill after the slip. Rubbish: It's in the bag A big thank you to the thoughtful and caring locals who took the initiative to clean the rubbish chaos at Rangihaeata last week. Due to the Birds Hill road damage the rubbish-collection truck could not get through. Some understanding folk brought their rubbish bags back onto their properties. Others did not. Dogs and weka had a field day. Rubbish scattered on roads and along verges. Several locals came to the rescue and re-bagged what they could, even using their own prepaid big yellow rubbish bags. Then, using a ute and a borrowed trailer, transported at least 30 bags of Rangihaeata rubbish to the recycling centre. Much was revealed about some people’s lack of composting and recycling! However, a huge thank you to those wonderful, caring, selfless, community-minded few who cleared up an unnecessary mess. Let’s continue to look after each other. Nga mihi nui.

Golden Bay Grey Power and Golden Bay Rural Women have collaborated to organise two opportunities for the community to meet the candidates standing in the local body elections: Sunday 11 September at 2.30pm in the Collingwood Area School Hall and 7pm at the Senior Citizens’ Hall, Commercial Street, Tākaka. We have five aspiring candidates for our Tasman mayor, four contenders for two ward councillors, and as we had four nominations for four community board positions no election is necessary. However, we have still invited our four community board members to speak. All nine candidates and four board members elect will deliver a short prepared speech, and there will be time for questions.Questions are to be submitted in writing either prior to or at the meeting (paper and pens available). These may be addressed to all candidates, or selected candidates. There will be no questions from the floor. We warmly invite you to take this opportunity to come along and hear what these candidates who hope to represent us, have to say. Please wear a mask.

THE GB WEEKLY, FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 20226 Review: Northspur Page proudly sponsored by NBS Owned by our customers Investing in your community

Northspur begins in a New Zealand ravaged by a plague which has broken down our society. In a sparsely populated rural setting, neighbours greet visitors with a loaded shotgun rather than an invitation to a barbecue, and our pacifist main character Kellan (Josh McKenzie) is struggling with protecting his home while trying to cling to his principles. When his wife Melinda, (Delaney Tabron), suffers an injury which infects her with the air-borne pathogen, Kellan has no choice but to leave her while he goes off in search of life-saving medicine.Exploring a nearby holiday cabin remembered from a traumatic childhood, he finds it to be unexpectedly inhabited. The now fortified dwelling is fiercely guarded by the cantankerous Summers, (Marshall Napier), the former mayor of the closest settlement who has crossed and been run out of town by a vicious mob (led by a very scary Kali Kopae). Aware of their planned mass attack to finish him off, Summers offers to supply Kellan with the drugs he needs, but only in exchange for a week of his help in defending the cabin. Left with little choice, the two very uneasy allies make desperate preparations as malign forces gather against them. Meanwhile the increasingly unwell Melinda is having her own difficulties, as roaming marauders begin to realise how vulnerable her home has become. Regardless of her infection she maintains a formidable defence, unencumbered by her husbands reluctance to take a life. She also unexpectedly takes on a new responsibility in the form of recently orphaned Tia, (an amazing performance by young Nell Fisher), but her strength is failing by the day. Meanwhile, a threat from Kellan’s own past aligns itself with Summers’ enemies, and the scale of the brutal siege on the little cabin escalates dramatically. The days of the lamentable expression “it was good for a New Zealand film” are long behind us, and Northspur proves this in spades – even if it’s a spade to the face in this often violent tale of survival. But the characters are extremely well-defined and motivations clearly drawn, imbuing even the most callous villains with a degree of humanity which would be missing in a lesser film. Be sure to see this remarkable production while we have the limited opportunity, it is bound to take a rightful place among the very top tier of New Zealand films. Next Sunday is a screening of Black Narcissus (1947), as part of the current Classic Cinema season at the Village Theatre. Set in a former palace amidst the chasms and howling winds of the Himalayas, Deborah Kerr stars as a mother superior charged with setting up a convent school and medical clinic. But the dilapidated building, opposition from the local Hindu population, and the challenging alien environment ensure this will be no easy task. With Oscar-winning set design and photography, Black Narcissus is regarded as “an exquisite cinematic jewel” and screens on Sunday 11 September at 4.30pm.

The result is rather astonishing, an adrenaline fuelled fable of vengeance and forgiveness set in a semi-future Aotearoa, but which would be equally at home on the 19th century prairies of the wild west. Kia ora koutou e te whānau. The flood event has kept us all pre-occupied for the last few weeks and whilst things return to normal for some of us, many in our community are still struggling with the aftermath.Iwant to particularly acknowledge our local roading crews who worked tirelessly throughout the emergency to keep our roads useable and safe. Their work was phenomenal and now the fixing of that infrastructure is keeping them busy. Great work guys and thanks to all your comrades who are lending a hand, on loan from far and wide. Well done to the Civil Defence staff and volunteers who managed the Emergency Operations Center and the response and recovery phases 24/7 during the event. Thanks to those who chose to self evacuate recognising their properties were at risk. It makes our job so much easier (and safer!) knowing that you are safe and not in need of rescuing when things get bad out there. Thankfully the majority of the people have been able to return to little or no damage. Looking at Nelson over the weekend, I think we got lucky in Mohua. Once again our FENZ volunteers stood up and shone. Your police were cut off from attending anything west of Birds Hill but we knew we were able to call on Graham and his Collingwood crew who attended a couple of jobs for us. The hours that our volunteer brigades put into helping their communities is truly impressive and it was cool to see them assisted by NZRT2, Red Cross and I think we even had full-time firefighters on station from Rangiora.

• 20 August: A good citizen has handed in a wallet with a significant amount of cash. It would be great to re-unite this with its owner.

• 26 August: A 25-year-old local female was issued a $200 fine and 50 demerits for driving with excess breath alcohol.

• 29 August: A 29-year-old local male was summonsed to court for driving with excess breath alcohol after crashing on Long Plain Road. Stay safe – be kind – keep up your Covid/flu vigilance (hygiene, mask wearing if able).

Murray is currently rated 25th in the country for Tournament Scrabble. Due to his support of local schools over the years he is known to many of the children, although he has not worked with students this year except for one session at the high school, due partly to Covid disruptions.

The library was buzzing with animated discussion at the tournament last week, directed by Scrabble master Murray Rogers (standing).

He was challenged in this tournament by having 13 participants (an odd number) for the first time, but pairing up two Tākaka Primary players as one person solved that problem. “I think they were concentrating quite well,” he said. “After six years of only primary school students participating in a tournament, it was good to see high-schoolers being involved for the first time. Wirimu Graham, year 7, who won the tournament for the last two years, came first playing against year 9 students, two years his senior. He was the only one to play all his tiles in one go with the word SUPERED, past tense for being a superedendent.”

The 13 high school students, chaperoned by Ute Schroder, were all from years 7, 8 and 9. Ute commented on how much fun they all had, laughing, talking and helping each other. All played three games each lasting 55 minutes, with 15-minute breaks between games. The room filled with intensive brain energy accompanied by a fair amount of din, discussion and constant challenges.

As part of this year’s WordFest, an interschools Scrabble Tournament was held at the Tākaka Memorial Library with a turnout of 19 participants: 13 from the High School; three from Tākaka Primary; and two from the Home School group. There were no representatives from Motupipi as the day coincided with their Daffodil Day fundraising for the Cancer Society, nor from Collingwood School due to the intermittent road closures at Birds Hill caused by recent flooding.

New principal Rachel Evans said “It’s great to see lots of whānau here, and actual community members as well come to support us, some who have been coming every year for six or seven years. Several children have told me this morning this is the highlight, the absolute favourite day of the whole year.” She said that the Cancer Society had given the school some lovely books to share with the children, many of whom already have a good understanding of the purpose of this special day.

Of that, a whopping $1413 was raised by Motupipi School students at their reinstated annual market fundraiser for the NZ Cancer Society on 26 August, while Tākaka Primary School raised $305.50 from their “come dressed in yellow” gold-coin donation day. This year there was just one public stall in Tākaka, outside Take Note, and Cherie Byrne co-ordinated the Collingwood stall, assisted by Sharon King. Trash Palace volunteers donated $218 on Friday afternoon, which was the sum of their proceeds for the day. As Sharon said, “It was pretty cool.” With other fundraisers yet to bring their collections in, Sharon said the total will increase. Several people phoned her on Daffodil Day, wanting a bank account number to transfer money into.Motupipi School energetically celebrated the event, which for two years has been minimised due to Covid restrictions. All passers-by were welcomed with brightly decorated daffodils on the roadside. Apart from buckets of daffodils, there were many other things to buy with vouchers purchased at the gate. The enterprising business stalls included handcrafts, food and drink, and opportunities to test your mental and physical skills. At midday, shopkeepers were scarce as they fuelled up on lunches of their dreams at stalls selling barbecued sausages, ice cream, decorative cupcakes, marshmallow sticks and homemade lemonade. Then it was down to serious business. From that point the hair and nail salon did a roaring trade, and quirky handcrafts like the tiny succulent gardens and hand-painted crockery quickly sold out. Children and parents alike let off energy buying their luck in activities and games such as the treasure hunt, an obstacle course, running race, potting the ping-pong ball, or simply leaping around the bouncy castle.

The total collected by last Friday’s Baywide Daffodil Day fundraiser had amounted to $5181.35 when The GB Weekly checked in with organiser Sharon McConnon.

Daffodils with a difference were blooming from busy hands at the library in perfect time for Daffodil Day, but these were all hand crocheted out of wool. Under the guidance of Antonietta Ruocco, at left, a small group learnt how to sculpt the 3D daffodils with their crochet hooks, a great sense of accomplishment evident once completed. Antonietta was taught to crochet by her Grand Aunt at age seven, later extending this skill into lace making. She is keen to initiate a regular crochet club if there is enough interest. The puzzle of Tākaka’s original business layout is gradually being pieced together by Heritage Golden Bay, whose recent installation of four more plaques almost completes its heritage profile. However, uncovering the “truths” hasn’t always been easy.

Plaques reveal forgotten histories

Photo courtesy of Golden Bay Museum. occupants came and went until the property was purchased by shoe-repair man Lyall Winter, who also sold saddlery, leather goods, upholstery and cow and horse covers. Lyall never had a cash register, but kept all his money in his pocket. From the late 1970s, the building housed the Shoe Box, then ladieswear and gifts, a dairy, a fruit, vege and ice-cream shop, an Indian restaurant and in 2020, the current Thai restaurant. The fourth plaque outside Grasshopper memorialises the town’s first public toilets. The Women’s Division of Federated Farmers raised funds for a rest room for women, and in 1934, a building housing toilets plus a comfortable room with a sofa, table and basic kitchen facilities was opened on this site. For women whose town day was a huge event, and for the Plunket nurses checking babies, it was a godsend. Sadly, the facility closed in 2002, and for six years there were no public toilets in Tākaka until those at the present RSA Memorial Park were finally installed on the old library site. Another two plaques are waiting to be installed; one for outside the Curry Leaf to mark the Sinclair and Ellis houses, and anther outside GB Motorcycles for the original RSA building. Four final plaques are still waiting to be printed and will finally complete Commercial Street’s history, from Motupipi Street to Reilly Street on both sides of the road. A wander through town will offer a fascinating glimpse into the intrigues and dramas of Tākaka’s early trade and enterprise.

Whilst investigating for Golden Bay Museum’s “Commercial Street” exhibition last year, principal researchers Sally Gaffney and Julie Reilly grappled with discrepancies regarding dates and locations of businesses. By delving deeper into documents and re-examining photographs, they finally separated fact from“Wehearsay.goback now and pay for the certificate of title; we get the land deeds, follow them through, we read all the books and all the newspapers, then we talk to people to fit it all together,” explained Sally. Byrnes Butchery was one such anomaly. Originally thought to have been in the MONZA building, it was discovered instead to have been opposite the Telegraph Hotel, between the Masonic Lodge and [the then] Brown & Kerr Jewellers. When the Telegraph burned down in 1915, the fire jumped the road and destroyed the butchers and jewellers buildings. This tale is told on one plaque on the NPD petrol station corner. Another new plaque, outside O’Sha restaurant, marks the site of the Cash Drapery and General Importing Company (CDC), which stocked clothing and household linens. Several different
