A group of seven young people have formed a Youth Council and will meet monthly at Tākaka’s Youth Habitat. Working with youth workers Tom Lake of the Rec Park Centre, and Jess Jacquier of Youth Habitat, they are releasing a survey for youth. Via social media such as Instagram and Youth Habitat’s Facebook page, the survey aims to collect feedback about what the youth of Golden Bay wants. Each completed survey goes into the draw for one of four great prizes: • Paddleboard hire at Tata Beach, during summer of course, which includes three friends • A Bluetooth speaker • Two sets of wireless headphones Head students Isaac Pawley (GB High School) and Lilly Bain (Collingwood Area School),

Claire Sparrow, Tiana Olney and home school students Tilly Orchard, Deva Baanvinger-Singh, and Ruby Watson make up the Youth Council. Although the group operates as a separate entity, they work together with Youth Council Co-ordinator, Jess. “We use the space and get involved at the same time,” said Lilly. “The same information is useful to both groups and the Rec Park Centre,” added Jess. They have come up with several potential topics with the aim of finding out what local youth want them to focus on. Transport has been identified as a big one for young people living in Golden Bay. “It is one big limiting factor as to things you can do here,” said Isaac. Other topics of interest are wellbeing, arts and creativity, activities and courses. Tick boxes

are provided on the forms, with space for youth to add their own ideas under “Other”. Hard copies of the survey will also be available throughout Golden Bay High and Collingwood Area Schools, Tākaka Library and the Youth Habitat. “There’s usually someone at the Youth Habitat from 11am-5pm daily,” said Jess. “Dropins are welcome.” Deadline date for survey submission is 8 July. Those 11-24 years are eligible. Jess, youth worker Tullia Wilson and Tom will collate the results and present them to the Youth Council. From there the team will make their decisions as to where their focus needs to be. Online survey forms are available on Instagram@theyouthabitat and Facebook: Golden Bay Youth Habitat

REMEMBER: Deadline next week is a day early, Monday 20th at 12pm.

GB Community Board JO RICHARDS

Tuesday’s meeting of Golden Bay Community Board was a relatively long affair thanks to several issues raised in Public Forum, two external presentations, plus a couple of lengthy discussions. Public Forum Public Forum opened with Noel Baigent speaking about the council’s funding options to cover the cost overrun of the grandstand reinstatement ($195,000) and the construction of the Rec Park car park ($300,000). TDC’s latest proposal is to fund both from the Golden Bay Ward Reserve Financial Contribution (RFC) account, but Noel asked the community board to recommend only the former was funded by the RFC, with the car park costs being covered by general rates. “It’s too much for Golden Bay to pay for both; it leaves very little in the fund.” The topic was discussed in some detail later in the meeting. Public Forum regular Reg Turner expressed his concern about the lack of mobility parking in Collingwood before calling for tighter speed restrictions. “Motueka has a 30kmph limit in town; can we have the same limit in Tākaka and Collingwood?” Later in the meeting it was explained that the lower limit was likely to be introduced for Tākaka’s Commercial Street as part of its planned upgrade. Paul Sangster squeezed three issues into his allotted five minutes. He began by pointing out that the proposed penguin fence at Port Tarakohe may need to be pulled down periodically to allow for maintenance of the rock wall. He was also concerned about who would pick up the bill for fence maintenance. “We don’t want ratepayers to pay for this.” During Chair’s Report, TDC finance manager Mike Drummond clarified that “ongoing maintenance [of the fence] will be borne by council…funded through general rates”. He added that the gates would be constructed to allow access for maintenance. Paul’s second topic concerned the proposed landscaping development at Waitapu, specifically the effect of installing a rock wall under the bridge, which he said was “ridiculous” and would “block the river off”. Referring to the proposed landscaping during Chair’s Report, community board member Dave Gowland concurred with Pauls’ assessment. “Approaches [on the...
