The process of bringing together the production “has been fun… with an incredibly talented cast and crew,” says Anita. The ensemble is rehearsing two to three times per week, often getting together independently to run their lines. Says Anita: “Every rehearsal, someone says, ‘That was so much fun’.”

On the night you should expect to see singing and dancing and have “a whole lot of fun” says Anita. “It will appeal to a wide range of people.” However, she cautions, “it’s not aimed at “Havingchildren.saidthat, there is no reason for them not to attend. You just must be prepared to have a discussion about shooting arrows at people, strangling your kids, torture chairs and blowing stuff up.” Not to mention explaining what “chowdering down on a grandma sandwich” might mean. The show is running from 2-9 September at 7.30pm, with a matinee showing on Sunday 4th at 2pm. Tickets may be purchased prior at Stitch ‘n Sew, but door sales may be available. There will be supper and a cash bar on the night.“Come along and have a good laugh,” says Anita.

“Dark humour at its finest” says The Addams Family producer and director Anita Hutchinson. Young and old will be familiar with the iconic The Addams Family story, this time with America’s darkest family coming to life as a comical musical about love, family, honesty and growing up.

Cast member Sage Forest says “Anita is incredibly courageous to work with as a director. She really knows how to build the atmosphere.” Sage is playing an “ancestral chorus girl” and is finding the role “somewhat terrifying, but I know that opening night will happen and I will be there.”

With voting in the local government elections beginning next month, prospective representatives are gearing up for hustings. It looks like there will be plenty of competition for the various roles. The official candidate list for Tasman District, released last Friday, shows there are 49 people contesting 21 available seats on the council and community boards. Thirteen of the existing twenty-one Tasman District elected members have decided to stand for election again, as has the sitting mayor. For Golden Bay ward there are five candidates for the two councillor spots, while there are four candidates for the four places on community board. With the number of candidates matching the available positions, there will not be an election for the Golden Bay Community Board. The new-look board includes “reelected” members Abbie Langford and Grant Knowles, plus newcomers Henry Dixon and Robert Hewison. Long-standing members Averill Grant and Dave Gowland did not put their names forward for reelection.Standing for the position of Golden Bay ward councillor are the two current incumbents Celia Butler and Chris Hill, plus Phil Smith, Quin Lake and James WolfenDuvall. The race for the District’s top job has attracted five competitors – the present mayor Tim King, plus mayoral hopefuls Maxwell Clark, Mike Harvey, Richard Osmaston and Aly Cook. Postal voting opens Friday 16 September and polls close at noon on election day Saturday 8 October. Everyone on the Tasman District residential roll should receive their voting documents in the post between Friday 16 September and Wednesday 21 September. Individuals are automatically enrolled to vote provided they are a resident of the District, already on the parliamentary electoral roll, and have not changed address in the month prior to election day. Those who wish to enrol or update their details are encouraged to visit: vote.nz or phone 0800 36 76 56. Alternatively they can text their name and address to 3676 to have an enrolment form sent via mail.

Daffodils are blooming and that means it’s time for the Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser.Daffodil Day falls next Friday 26 August and it’s back to business almostas-usual following last year’s cancellation of the street appeal due to Covid restrictions.Thestall outside Take Note in Tākaka will open at 9am while the Collingwood stall will be manned from 10am. There will be no stall at FreshChoice this year, due to ongoingCoordinatorrestrictions.for Golden Bay’s Daffodil Day fundraising efforts Sharon McConnon says the stalls will offer items for sale as well as the chance to win prizes. “We will have the usual merchandise on offer plus some raffles available, including a lovely floral arrangement donated by TeresaWhileBrough.”itisa very public event, Sharon says Daffodil Day is of deep personal significance to her. “Daffodil Day means something different for us all and this year I’m wearing my daffodil for my dear Mum, who we lost very suddenly at the end of June.” The flowers themselves are a key part of the day and Sharon is appealing for donations to ensure there are plenty to go round. “The daffodils have been quite early this year but if there is anyone who still has them in abundance and would like to donate them to the cause, they can be dropped off at the First National office from Wednesday afternoon or, alternatively we are happy to come and pick. “Also, if anyone would like to help for an hour on the Tākaka stall, please let me know, just in case there are spaces still available. If it’s wet, we’ll relocate somewhere under cover and sheltered up the street, depending on which way the rain is raining.”

Rules for representing our ward Well, their names are out. And now we must elect two councillors who will represent the residents and ratepayers of our Golden Bay ward. The local government reforms state that we should elect representatives “who think like the community”. We are unique and alone in the aspirations of Tasman District Council and the fact we have two representatives give us two votes at the decision table. This fact gives the Golden Bay ward some clout. So, the incoming candidates must do the following:

• Listen to our collective voice and seek our guidance. Allow us to criticise them, and hold them to account for actions that are not in the interests of our community. Have the courage to challenge staff when they make Ourmistakes.councillors are the voice of Golden Bay, and must honour that privilege. Candidates must represent themselves openly and honestly throughout the electioneering period so we can cast an informed vote. This is an act of trust as most of us do not know them from a “bar of soap“. Reg Turner

NTT grant applications closing Network Tasman Trust is keen to raise awareness of the support it provides for local communities, and encourage more groups and individuals to apply for a grant before submissions close at the end of next week. Each year, Network Tasman Charitable Trust distributes more than $100,000 in grants to community organisations and individuals. Last year, it allocated $156,449 to 77 community organisations and three individual applicants. Trust Chairperson Gwenny Davis says the Trust aims to support a range of projects, services, and activities across five main areas: social support services, sport and recreation, education, art and culture, and environmental andInenergy-saving.GoldenBay,for example, GB Animal Welfare Society received a $3,000 grant to help volunteers trap, desex, tame and re-home stray and feral kittens, who have often been abandoned or dumped. “It’s not fair on the cats, as many don’t survive, but it’s also decimating our skink and bird populations,” said Lis Pedersen. “We’re just so grateful to Network Tasman Trust, the grant was a huge help.” Gwenny says: “We know that there are increasing demands on the community sector so we’re proud to be able to do our small part to support our community.” Network Tasman Trust grant applications close on Friday 26 August. THE GB WEEKLY, FRIDAY 19 AUGUST 2022 5

A gREAT rAW Was World War 1, really the Great War, as the narrative of the day would have us believe? Was New Zealand’s most recognisable conscientious objector hounded and treated like a criminal by our government of the time so the narrative could be sustained? Was that war just a tiff between three European cousins that escalated beyond belief to a contagion of global blood-letting? In a gREAT rAW, the voices of the ancestors come together in a theatrical debate to question the greatness of World War 1, to uncover the pain and suffering of a century ago in the hope we may learn from our mistakes and hopefully, not repeat them. Village Theatre, Tākaka, Sunday 28 August, 2pm. Entry is by koha. See the theatre website for more details.

Another positive for Corinne is the continuing work on the local curriculum, which she is excited to support at TPS. The initiative involves an “across-schools” teacher as kahui ako, whose role is to liaise with Manawhenua ki Mohua to develop a curriculum that is localised, bringing in the stories of the area. All students have the opportunity to learn te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, and TPS boasts three dual-medium classes –Years 0-1, Years 2-3 and Years 4-6. Corinne felt her daughters, seven-year-old Harper and sixyear-old Connor, were young enough to make the transition. She also has two older stepdaughters who continue to live in Palmerston North.

welcomes new principal RONNIE

The TPS focus on developing relationships and the importance of that for learning is also important to Corinne. And she is passionate about the structured literacy pathway that is a part of the focus for the school this year. “It’s a big change happening in education at the moment. It’s an approach to teaching reading, writing, spelling and handwriting that’s based on the science of how kids learn to read. The fact they were just ready to begin that journey was really enticing for me. I come from a school that are really on board with the philosophy behind it, and to be able to come here and lead staff through that is really important to me.”

Although making the move was a tough decision, Corinne says, “I didn’t realise how ready I was for a new challenge. It’s been really good for me professionally.”

Corinne was deputy principal at College Street Normal School in Palmerston North when she applied for the post at TPS. She had worked there for 20 years, having started at College Street as a beginner teacher after attaining a Masters degree in teaching. “It’s the largest primary school in Palmerston North, with a roll of 630 kids,” says Corinne. “There are 150 here, and I love this size. I know all the staff and I nearly know all of the kids’ names.”

Tākaka Primary School (TPS) has welcomed Corinne Rowe as its new school principal. Having settled into a school house with her husband and two daughters, Corinne is enjoying all that Golden Bay has to offer. When the position came up, Corinne had never heard of Golden Bay. A quick Google search showed a beautiful environment; then she checked out the school online. In particular, she was attracted to the school’s values and vision.

School SHORT Her husband, Gareth, previously worked for Fonterra in Palmerston North, initially as a tanker driver, then as a farm asset technician. He has just secured a position as casual tanker driver with Fonterra Tākaka. Gareth has been supporting the family’s settlement into their new home. The family spend weekends exploring their new“Weenvironment.loveithere. It’s such an amazing place to bring children up in,” said Corinne.

No. 601 Medium Previous solution - Easy Spelling bees, one person confessed, put the “fear of hell” into her. Others used the word “terrifying”. Some of us do remember those sweat-inducing school spelling tests, but nowadays computer spell-checks do a lot to dispel the foibles of word sinners. Despite that, there was keen competition at the WordFest spelling bee at Tākaka Memorial Library last week, with entrants including none other than Golden Bay’s own Scrabble King, Murray Rogers. Due to incomplete teams, the competition was, at the last minute, contested by individuals. “It was a thoroughly enjoyable event with a select group participating,” said library manager Carolyn Roberts. “There were some challenging words that created lots of headscratching and laughter.” Whether they knew them or not, words like arenaceous, clafouti/s, irascible and vizsla were all attempted at and given the same few seconds as easier words like asphyxiation, dendrochronology and cruciverbalist, with words such as flibbertigibbet thrown in as brainteasers. Kirsty McLeod was declared Grand Champion with 28 out of 45 correct, just ahead of Murray, who will be hosting a Scrabble Championship at the library on 30 September. For this group, the spelling bee was nothing short of fun, stimulating discussion about various word anomalies.

Keep an eye out for more WordFest events happening at the library and for the rescheduled date of Carol Dawber’s talk, postponed from 17 August due to the weather.

Appreciation went to Carolyn for hosting the event as part of WordFest and for mustering some of the trickiest words in the dictionary, and also to Goodness2Go for their prizes for all participants.

But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Photography has taken Chai Pyle on a journey around the world, but his lens is now sharply focused on Golden Bay. The transition from global to local came after Chai arrived in the Bay around five years ago. The move followed a long overseas adventure, which he began clutching his camera and a freshly-minted diploma in photography. “Travel and documentary photography fed my soul with its surprise opportunities and diverse subject matter,” says Chai. In 2009, however, he sold his camera gear, opting instead for travel without an agenda, and spent time tour guiding, doing odd jobs, and hiking. After landing in the Bay, his passion for picture-taking took off again. “In 2021 my creative juices were back with a vengeance and I set up my photography business in Golden Bay, this time with a quality mobile studio kit.”

For a maternity shoot, Chai sets up his mobile studio unit in the client’s home. “It’s often the first time for a woman and her family to step into a photo studio so, as you might expect, there can be some apprehension to begin with,” says Chai. Recent subject Rose O’Connor attests that “Chai’s style was really disarming and I quickly felt relaxed. It actually ended up being surprisinglyWeddingsfun.”are a new venture for Chai, but one he fully embraces. “I see weddings as a sacred rite, so as the photographer I feel privilege in witnessing such richness, and I relish the challenge of capturing these moments.”

To help “get the ball rolling” on his business, Chai is offering some special deals, including one free wedding and maternity focuses on Bay JO

Chai says his high-tech studio lights bring out the best in personal and commercial subjects which, over the past year, have included jewellery, models, musicians, pregnant women, weddings and families. The majority of personal subjects are covered by three “packages”: the family; maternity; and wedding shoots. The family shoot, Chai says, is a “casual affair” – typically taking advantage of the natural light just before sunset. “Everyone looks good rimmed in golden light, and framed by one of our amazing beaches. It’s a great way to celebrate one’s whānau.”

The reshuffle changed the pattern of the game with the Maidens defending stoutly and creating a number of goalscoring opportunities. Although they didn’t find the back of the opposition’s net, the Maidens’ tightened-up defence conceded only a single goal in the second-half leaving the final score at 0-6.

Phil was clearly pleased with the performance of his players. “The ability to change and adapt that fast is a credit to the Shield Maidens as even a load of professional teams struggle to do that.”

JO RICHARDS JO RICHARDS Shield Maidens’ keeper Bianca Honey races out to block a volley from Suburbs’ First XI striker . Photo: Jo Richards. Both of Golden Bay’s senior women’s teams were in action on home turf last Saturday. Kicking off at 1pm, GB Wahine Toa took on the high-flying Nelson Suburbs Swans in a Division 2 fixture. Coming into the tie, the Swans had won 9 out of 10 of their matches this season and led the standings by a considerable margin. It was always going to be a big ask for Wahine Toa, and their task got a whole lot bigger just three minutes into the game when the visitors opened the scoring. Undeterred, the home side recovered to mount a number of promising attacks, but the Swans put together some good moves of their own, putting their hosts under pressure and winning a series of corners. On more than one occasion the Swans looked odds-on to extend their lead but were thwarted by Wahine Toa keeper Stacey Currin-Steer who was having a great spell between the sticks. As half-time approached it looked like the home side had nullified the threat but two minutes out from the break, and out of nowhere, a speculative long-range lob sailed over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net. In the second half, Wahine Toa started well but were unlucky to concede to a deflected shot shortly after the restart. Despite creating some good chances, the home side were unable to convert and the match finished with the score at 0-3. Coach Richard Price said his team needs to remember what they learn in practice. “I’m a bit disappointed in our passing; we are so confident in training.”

Shortly after Wahine Toa’s match finished, Golden Bay’s Shield Maidens took to the pitch to face Nelson Suburbs FC Women’s 1st XI in a Division 1 clash. It turned out to be a game of two very different halves. The Maidens got off to a good start, their defensive shield holding out well against the visitors’ relentless attacks. But after 15 minutes, the ramparts were breached and, for the next 30 minutes, Suburbs’ slick movement, and a particularly lethal strike force, added four more to their tally. Maidens’ coach Phil Smith mixed things up at half-time with players, including the goal-keeper, changing positions.

The Birds Hill bump is in danger of becoming a permanent feature on SH60 near Waitapu Bridge. Last November, following months of stop-go traffic control, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (WKNZTA) shifted the carriageway a few metres away from the unstable roadside bank, reinstated both lanes, and removed the trafficThelights.minor diversion was envisaged as a short-term fix by the agency. “This is not a permanent solution to the landslip above this site but will help for the short-term,” said WKNZTA senior network manager Phil Hamblin at the time (GBW, 5/11/21). That “short-term” has now stretched to almost 10 months, and there are still no signs of the bump being banished. In response to an inquiry by The GB Weekly last week, WKNZTA system bump agency JO RICHARDS manager Top of the South Andrew James provided an explanation for the ongoing delay. “The big bump is caused by a slip above the road. This slip is still moving, and further slow slumping is expected to continue. The site is regularly monitored, and contractors are ready to remove further material as and when required.” Andrew added that the long-term plan remains to restore the road to its original configuration. “We are continuing to look at how the site can be stabilised and stopping further water entering the slip zone up slope. At this stage, localised management will continue as any permanent solution is expected to require significant work and costs.”

Donations have been given to various organisations including MenzShed, St John, Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy, parenting courses, sewing, gardening and youth groups. This time, the $600 raised will be shared between Mohua Social Services and the Ukrainian Refugee Appeal. Luncheon raises funds The “Stomping Out Poverty” ceilidh attracted a good crowd to the Pōhara Hall for a Saturday night of exertion and entertainment.Aswellasraising the heart rates of over 80 enthusiastic participants, the Golden Bay Folk Dance group raised over $800 for the local food bank. A four-woman ceilidh band called Footloose, made up of two talented mother-and-daughter duos, created live music. No previous dance skills were required as an experienced “caller” explained the moves and instructed the sequences of each dance. Comments from people on the dance floor indicated that it was a successful evening. “I came last year and didn’t want to miss it,” said one. “It’s great to see all the smiles.” “I’ve had so much fun but my calf muscles are really sore now,” said a third. Kevin Durkan, one of the organisers, agreed that it was a great night and that they will be back for another ceilidh next year. He said it may be at a different hall, but it will be another fun fundraiser.
