A new year about to dawn

The New Year is a time for reflection, hope and, under the current circumstances perhaps, not a little trepidation.

Looking back on 2021, the year began optimistically; despite the Covid pandemic raging across the globe, New Zealand’s closed borders meant lockdowns were a thing of the past for us Kiwis who could enjoy almost total freedom. The GB Weekly, for example, was able to report as usual on Golden Bay’s iconic summer events, including the A&P Show, the Tata Boat Race and the Tākaka Dog Trials.

The positive feeling continued as the vaccination programme was gradually rolled

out across the region. That is, until the Delta variant of the virus arrived and suddenly we were thrust back into lockdown. Once again, Golden Bay responded by doing the right thing and something close to our normal way of life was quickly restored. Since that transition, however, the Government’s Covid legislation, including so-called vaccine passports, has become a highly divisive issue in our community and around New Zealand.

Consequently, the last two months of 2021 have been extremely difficult for local businesses, schools and other organisations, and especially traumatic for those individuals who have been

Pōhara’s super sand sculptures

Trials judged “as good as any”

Sunday’s weather was perfect for one of Golden Bay’s summer highlights, the Sand Sculpture event at Pōhara Beach.

Crowds of kids and families from the neighbouring motor camp and around Golden Bay turned up at mid-morning for the outgoing tide, and for over three hours, dug, scooped and sculpted up an amazing collection of sand art. These were no mere sandcastles; amongst the creations were marine animals, mermaids and other mythical creatures, a surfing Legoman, Mickey Mouse, the Bismarck and even an orca eating a hammerhead shark.

Golden Bay Arts Council worker Tania Marsden, who organised the event, was thrilled with the response.

How do you celebrate a 125th anniversary? Well, if you are the Tākaka Dog Trial Club, by following the same traditional recipe used since the year dot: start with a generous bunch of men (and women) and their dogs, add a flock of sheep, a handful of expert judges, mix in big dollops of camaraderie and kiwi tucker, and serve in a spectacular setting.

The result, according to one regular from North Canterbury who travelled up to last weekend’s event, is “as good as any trial I go to in the South Island”.

Despite the standard of competition, Ian said local talent can mix it with the best. “The points show, truly, that our own local, Grant Wyllie, known as Jock, is right up there with the big guns.”

The day the country came to town

Heaps hooked at fishing comp

Golden Bay’s annual celebration of country life came to town on Saturday for the 124th A&P Show.

As the sun climbed over Tākaka’s showground, and the crowds poured in, the temperature rose and animals, showgoers and stall holders were soon seeking shade. But by midday, cloud cover and a strengthening breeze combined to cool things down nicely, just in time for the Grand Parade.

Although attendance at the traditional big day out fluctuates from year-to-year, the show remains the Bay’s largest annual single-day event. A&P committee vice-president Noel Baigent is delighted with this year’s turnout. “We estimate 5000 – slightly up on 2020.”

The banquet of fish caught during the Pōhara Boat Club Fishing Competition over Waitangi weekend saw amateur anglers green with envy.

There were fish of all types, weights, and legal sizes, including a 10.9kg beast of a snapper caught by seasoned seadog Chris Ray. And, had they hauled it on the boat, the metre-plus-long blue shark hooked and eagerly released by Colin and Kelly Jaquiery may have beaten the records fins-down.

Although the sea on Saturday morning was a bit rough on the guts, by mid-afternoon the winds died down to provide perfect fishing conditions that continued through the entire weekend.

Firefighters from across the region assembled at Tākaka’s Junction Green on Saturday to battle it out in a trial of strength, speed and sheer determination.

The Nelson Marlborough Provincial Fire Brigades Association Firefighter Combat Challenge was hosted by the Tākaka Volunteer Fire Brigade (TVFB) and attracted male and female competitors from Christchurch, Blenheim, Richmond, Wakefield and Motueka, as well as the local Golden Bay brigades.

In the men’s tandem race, Kyle Gardiner and his Dad, aka “Yogi and Boo Boo”, proved to be smarter – and quicker – than the average bear, flying around the course in 1 minute 21.65 seconds, three seconds faster than their air force duo rivals.

Just over half of the 49 pilot whales which stranded at Farewell Spit on Monday survived and eventually headed out to open water. The bitter-sweet outcome followed two days of intense rescue effort during which Department of Conservation staff and volunteers carried out two re-floats and spent many hours trying to keep the beached pod members alive.

Speaking on Wednesday DOC community ranger Andrew Lamason said the operation appeared to have been a success thanks to a “really cool” group of around 50 volunteers who had encouraged the whales to head out to sea. “The pod milled about and went deeper,” said Andrew. “The pod split into three sub-groups all out off the edge of the low tide platform.”

The announcement that the final cost of Waimea Dam could reach $164m was followed by what is now a familiar response from Tasman District Council (TDC) – an attempt to rationalise a situation which is in danger of spiralling out of control.

For the dam sceptics, who for years warned of sky-high costs – and were given short shrift by the dam’s cheerleaders prior to the project being greenlit – the current blow-out provides a classic “we told you so” moment. “In 2017 we used the best available international research – the Oxford Study of Large Dams – to estimate the dam is expected to cost at least $160m,” says Golden Bay resident Tony Lawton who now calculates the cost of completion will exceed $200m.

Old Thumpers classic motorbike scramble witnessed the emergence of a young star rider on Sunday. Battling against his peers and seniors around the muddy circuit on Alan and Shelley Palmer’s Ōnekāka farm, 14-year-old Wills Harvey from Nelson was crowned Old Thumpers Grand Champion at the Mussel Inn post-race prizegiving.

The annual festival of mud, motorbikes, and men behaving sensibly was unexpectedly blessed with perfect motocross conditions, confounding a doom-laden weather forecast.

“It was brilliant, says event organiser Richard “Wattie” Watson. “We had drizzle all around us, but the rain held off until the last race.”

Organisers of the Living Wood Fair are thrilled with the outcome of their third event since 2018.

The glorious weather brought revellers out in droves.

Fully booked workshops taught endless uses of plants and wood, from spoon carving to medicines and musical instruments. For younger fair-goers the busy Kids Zone offered lessons in tree climbing, fire lighting, bush skills and woodworking, plus quiet circles for storytelling.

Following a six-day muddy makeover, a short section of the Motupipi Stream is now primed and ready for ecological recovery.

Last week, excavators removed tons of sediment from a 200m stretch of the waterway, between Sunbelt Crescent and the Fonterra factory, and placed a series of log structures and branches in the stream to help restore lost habitat.

TDC’s education and partnerships officer Claire Webster believes the benefits of the river’s restoration will be widely felt.

“Not only will this section of river be able to support a lot more native aquatic life, its healthier for people too... People will in the future be able to spend time here enjoying a beautiful section of river.”

Golden Bay’s commemorations began with dawn gatherings in Tākaka and Collingwood and were followed by morning services.

Speaking immediately after the final ceremony, president of Golden Bay RSA Noel Baigent said he was delighted with the turnout at the day’s four events, especially by representatives of the armed forces and a new generation of Kiwis who he hoped would continue the tradition. “The important thing is to have people in uniform and young people.”

Waitapu: Iwi build consensus

Honours for Bainham Rural Women

The community consultation on the future of the Waitapu Bridge site - a reserve on the outskirts of Tākaka - has begun.

Last Friday afternoon, representatives from Manawhenua ki Mohua and Waka Kotahi NZTA, along with members of the public, gathered at the site to start what is likely to be a long conversation. The aim of the initiative is to develop an understanding of the cultural significance of the river, exchange ideas about how to restore the river and surrounding environment, and to safeguard future public access to the area.

The group then adjourned to the Rec Park Centre where the debate continued with further explanation of the Waitapu site’s cultural significance, followed by an open discussion.

Honours received by nine members of Bainham Rural Women have recognised their active contribution to their branch and their community.

Some received Life Membership awards on Wednesday 9 June, and others were recognised with Branch Honour Bars or Service Simply Given awards.

It was a day of celebration, stories, and wonderful memories of the friendships and fellowship built between women over many years. Two ladies went to their first meeting in the Bainham hall on the same day 52 years ago, with the motivation “If you go, then I’ll go”. They have both been part of the group ever since.

Collingwood Tavern’s annual hunting competition wrapped up with a community get-together outside the pub on Sunday afternoon. Hunters enjoyed good weather over the weekend, but experienced mixed fortunes with the chase.

One who has seen it all is Peter Bloomfield from Mangarākau, who at 84 years old has accumulated a lifetime of hunting experience. As he was inspecting the best of the weekend’s bounty Peter told a few tales – both from the old days and from more recent times. “I’ve hunted since I was eight yearsold,” said Peter. “When I was 13, I lived in Mārahau and used to catch more than 1,000 pigs every winter. There was a piggery there but they all went wild – thousands of them.”

Perhaps not the best time for a dip in the briny, but that didn’t deter a large handful of hardy locals who jumped off the jetty and into the grey, glassy sea on Sunday.

The cause was a good one – to raise awareness of mental health issues, especially amongst men; the effect was clear for all to see – the community coming together to talk, have fun and exchange a bit of banter.

The “Grab Life by the Balls” event was the brainchild of Nick Boyer, a Bainham farmer, who has first-hand experience of severe depression, having been in a very dark place towards the end of his 10-year stint as a dairy farmer in Australia.

Grandstand gets go-ahead

Supporters of Golden Bay’s grandstand finally have something to cheer about.

Last weeks’ decision by Tasman District Council to bring funding forward means the historic structure should be useable in time for next year’s A&P Show – the association’s 125th.

“This is more than good news, this is the best news I’ve heard since 9 February 2016,” says vice-president of the A&P Association Noel Baigent, referring to the supporters’ five-yearlong campaign to preserve and restore the grandstand.

Trustee of the Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust Jill Pearson is cautiously optimistic. “I’ll believe it when I’m sitting up there without a ladder.”

Bay residents and friends dusted off their dancing shoes, pulled out their formal frocks and dinner suits and partied at the Inaugural Golden Bay Charity Ball. All proceeds from the night went to support Bay emergency services – St John Ambulance, Fire Brigade, Search & Rescue and the Rescue Helicopter.

The idea for a ball was first conceived a few years ago by Bay local and St John Ambulance volunteer Leiria-Beth Hutchinson (LB) when she was getting ready for her Year 13 school ball.

“It was so just much fun getting ready with my friends and attending the ball; it seemed like the adults were missing out.”

LB’s vision for the charity ball is to make it a biennial event, intended as a fundraiser to support a range of local services.

Initiated in June 2018, the project aims to harness the vision and knowledge of the community, working with the skill and expertise of farm owners to develop sustainable farming practices. The process is intended to foster a community that is better informed and unified.

In the past nine months Wayne has presented the Farming 2030 project at several summits and conferences. In September this year Country Calendar are filming Wayne and Tyler, and they wish to include a section on Farming 2030.

Golden Bay’s Shield Maidens showed grit and determination – and not a little flair – to overcome Nelson Suburbs FC Swans last Saturday. But they had to do it the hard way, twice coming from behind before scoring the winner mid-way though a pulsating second half.

The thoroughly deserved win means that the Maidens have done the double over the Women’s Division 2 leaders this season and are fast becoming the Swans’ bogey side.

Addressing his players immediately after the match, Maidens’ coach Phil Smith was clearly ecstatic. “Ladies; thank you so much for that game,“ said Phil. “Wow. That is how football is played.

I’m so proud.”

Tākaka fizzed with midwinter magic. Lighting the blue touchpaper on the Matariki 2021 festivities The Dance Collective Mohua warmed up the gathering crowd before the lantern parade lit up Commercial Street on its way to the centre of town, where Manawhenua ki Mohua welcomed everyone to the celebration. The welcome was followed by Collingwood Area School’s kapa haka, a waiata, and an ancestor ceremony.

A spectacular mix of music, fire shows and dancing completed the night’s entertainment.

The following evening, the Village Green hosted “The Glowzone” – a multi-coloured display of light installations, while the War Memorial Park showcased performances by The Projkt.

With one helluva bang, the 1920s generator exploded and spun like a giant Catherine Wheel on fireworks night. And so began the beginning of the Pupu Hydro Society (PHS).

On Saturday, 14 August 2021 at the River Inn, founding PHS member Paul Sangster led the charge in celebrating 40 years since local engineer Jim Baird convened a meeting of enthusiasts in 1981 and laid down a challenge: to purchase the Pupu Hydro’s exploded power generation equipment and restore it to full working order. But it took time to persuade Tasman Electric Power Board.

“After four years, the power board could see we were getting there and they let us buy the plant,” says Paul.

Collingwood crowned champions

Golden Bay in Lockdown

Collingwood were crowned Nelson Bays Division 2 champions last Saturday afternoon. Lifting the silver cup capped off a sensational run for the Black and Gold who have lost only one game all season. But they triumphed only by the narrowest of narrow margins in an extraordinary final that ended 3-3 after extra time.

With no tries, no conversions, and only one penalty kick per side during a 100-minute marathon, the statistics suggest a dull game. It was anything but. The large, vocal, and naturally partisan crowd of around 600 couldn’t take their eyes of the intense gladiatorial contest for a second as the gold and red armies battled for every inch of Collingwood’s muddy field.

What a difference a day makes. Last Tuesday lunchtime, Tākaka’s Commercial Street was open for business and doing steady trade. Less than 24 hours later, with the whole country locked down at Covid-19 Alert Level 4, the road and pavements were all but deserted.

With the exception of essential services including the pharmacy, a rural store, a hardware retailer, and two petrol stations, the CBD was effectively closed. Around the Bay schools and businesses went into forced hibernation.

Cafes spring back to life

140 years of musical service

On the first day of spring, cafés across Golden Bay emerged from enforced late-winter hibernation as restrictions relaxed under Alert Level 3.

Tākaka’s Wholemeal Cafe got its espresso machine cranking early on Wednesday morning and was pouring take-away coffees from 7.30am. Front-of-house manager Jenny Thompson says, “So far it’s been good; it’s been really busy with tradies, and it’s lovely to see the customers.”

Goodness2Go owner Cheryl Elsey is also giving it a go with her distinctive mobile coffee cart. “I’m heading off around town to various work places,” says Cheryl who is also offering hot food on the go.

In 1881, when 22-year-old Clifton settler George Channing Gilbert began holding fundraising variety concerts to buy instruments for a brass band, he could not have imagined its long future ahead.

This year, the Tākaka Citizens Band, one of New Zealand’s oldest brass bands, marks its 140th year. Celebrating this remarkable milestone, however, has been postponed until possibly March 2022 due to Covid restrictions.

On 19 June, at the annual Awards Dinner, the many achievements of the band were acknowledged. Members of the Motueka Brass Band also attended – a mark of the strong relationship shared between the two towns.

Lambing season is a family affair

Lambs and daffodils, occasionally together, create the classic spring photo and it’s that time of year again bringing sights and sounds of a new season. Watching gangs of frolicking lambs being woolly jumpers in the evenings brings a smile to even the tiredest shepherd. And across the hills you can hear different bleating pitches as ewes and offspring call to each other.

Most farmers report that, in spite of rough weather with cold winds, their ewes are looking well and have done a surprisingly great job of mothering with good lamb survival. Rams must have been very active at tupping five months ago and Ian Alach, Uruwhenua, was one who observed that lambing was “all go from day one, probably the fastest I have experienced”.

The apparent sea change in the Government’s Covid-19 strategy, from elimination to suppression, has upped the stakes in the vaccine rollout.

In particular, the spread of cases beyond locked-down Auckland has the Ministry of Health racing to ensure as many Kiwis as possible are vaccinated without delay. This weekend the nationwide push steps up a gear with “Super Saturday” featuring a live multi-media “vax-a-thon”.

Following the most recent outbreaks, it now appears to be a case of “when” – not “if” – the highly infectious Delta variant finds its way into all corners of the country, including Golden Bay.

Community to run Pōhara Hall

Grandstand stands alone

Pōhara Hall could soon be run by a committee of locals.

The majority of community halls around the Tasman region are managed by volunteer community groups. However, Pōhara Hall is not managed by a community group, but is overseen by Tasman District Council (TDC).

Prior to lockdown, TDC staff met with three parties who had expressed an interest in forming a Pōhara Hall Committee, including representatives of the Country Music Club.

Committee members don’t need to be a user of the hall – just passionate about the facility and retaining it for community use. It’s not an overly arduous job, according to TDC reserves and facilities administrator Jane Park.

The demolition of the squash courts, which have butted up against Golden Bay’s grandstand for decades, marked a major milestone in the reinstatement of the grandstand, now being revealed as the stand-alone building it was designed to be.

As he watched the swinging digger bucket do its business, vice president of the A&P Association Noel Baigent was clearly happy with what he was witnessing. “This is a good day,” said Noel.

Cycle revolution on a roll

Hospitality under Orange

Perfect conditions greeted an army of cyclists at the opening ceremony of the Paines Ford to East Tākaka cycle path.

Convening at the East Tākaka Rd end of the track, the group was treated to morning tea and speeches before the ribboncutting and inaugural cycle.

Work on the path started eight years ago, and has involved thousands of volunteer hours, community funding, and highly supportive landowners. Founder members of the Golden Bay Cycle and Walkways Society, Wouter de Maat and Phil Castle, said “Good things take time”. They also said they are “very proud” of their achievement and urge the community “to enjoy the track that was built with great community spirit.”

With the implemention of the Governments’s traffic lights system in mind, local hospitality owners met at The Wholemeal Café in Tākaka to discuss the best way forward.

Presentation of vaccination certificates is now mandatory for customer entry to hospitality venues.

Following the meeting, Roots Bar and Dada Manifestó owner Holly Osmond asked for understanding and patience from their valued customers.

A short service, led by the president of Golden Bay Returned and Services Association, paid respects to those who served and those who sacrificed their lives in WWI. The address referred to the brave souls listed on Tākaka’s Memorial Wall and urged people to never forget those who did return. Many had lives shattered forever.

Tribute was also paid to the many other service personnel who fought in other conflicts, and who are recognised on remembrance pillars around the Park.

Last December saw the official launch of an ambitious programme to provide high quality cost-effective homes for the hundred or so families and individuals struggling to find long-term secure accommodation in the Bay. One year into the Golden Bay/Mohua Affordable Housing Project, chair of the managing trust Dr Chris Bennett says the most tangible sign of progress is the completion of the first pair of dwellings. “We have essentially finished two houses – one in Hamama and one in Rockville,” says Chris.

Construction has also begun of two units for the elderly located to the rear of existing community cottages at 189 Commercial Street, Tākaka.

Sunday’s vehicular rally through Tākaka, the second such protest in the last few months, failed to live up to its pre-event billing. The rally was one of dozens taking place at the same time in towns and cities across New Zealand – a coordinated day of action Groundswell dubbed the “Mother of All Protests”.

At the head of the convoy of tractors, utes, trucks and assorted passenger vehicles, a red ute sported the official Groundswell banner emblazoned with the message “No farms, no food”.

Immediately behind the lead ute, an SUV displayed small sign “Stop Three waters” followed closely by a tractor bearing two large banners that read “NZ farmers feed the world” and “Hands off our land, water, utes”.

Tākaka’s historic marble church is lighting up for Christmas.

Since the doors were closed and the power disconnected in 2012, the Sacred Heart Church has sat forlornly empty.

But now after dark, its interior comes alive with a solar-lit nativity scene and a Christmas tree hung with prayer cards amidst twinkling lights, inviting more than a passing glance.

“I think people get a sense of comfort if there are some lights on at night in the church,” says parishioner Kate O’Byrne.

“It gives them a nice feeling. We first lit the ceiling up and it looked so beautiful; the stones inside really stood out. So, I put strings of fairy lights up just to enhance its beauty and to draw the attention of people as they walk past.”

Careful attention during the warmer weather will ensure an ongoing harvest of those yummy summer vegetables and fruits you love so much.

Get mulch on before the soil dries out. It’s one of the most important tasks. By mulch, I mean organic material ideally sourced from your garden: grass clippings, weeds (not invasive or seedy), leaf mould, or even green crops chopped up finely.

Other sources include seaweed, seagrass or the combo of seagrass and leaf litter from the beaches, hay, straw or baleage.

Of course, weed seeds are always an issue with brought-in materials, as are chemical spray residues.

Other than conserving soil moisture, organic mulches have the added benefit of suppressing weeds and feeding the soil biology, which drives the whole soil ecosystem.

Regularly harvesting fruits like cucumbers and beans will force the plant to keep producing more. The same goes for picking leaves from greens, such as lettuce and silverbeet. If you have too much, produce makes a great gift, or it can be preserved for later use by snap-blanching and freezing.

Crops trained up stringlines, poles or other structures (like builders 665 mesh) may need careful jigging to help them along.

Growing crops up instead of along the ground enables more plants to be planted underneath – a great situation for shadelovers, such as salads, brassicas, silverbeet and rocket.

Supplementary feeding gives heavy producers a boost.

Compost or vermicast can be applied to the soil surface. Liquid feeding with potassium and phosphorus-rich brews like comfrey and seaweed are especially beneficial to fruiting crops like tomatoes and capsicums.

Sowing root crops (carrots and beetroot) means they grow strong before autumn comes and then will be ready for winter harvest. Similarly, Brassicas like kale and cabbages need to be planted now to grow to their full potential for winter harvest.

Continue sowing or planting salads between main crops for ongoing supply. Finding room can be a challenge, but with careful planning crops can be rotated or interplanted.

Orchard ripening starts with berryfruit, early plums and some apples, even early figs. Thin fruit if laden to encourage fewer but larger, tastier fruit. Mulch surface-feeding fruits like plums, peaches, and all subtropicals like citrus. Water if the soil dries out.

Water safety is top priority at Tata beach this summer SUBMITTED

Safety for all water users is the priority at Tata beach this summer, with the introduction of new safety measures by Tasman Harbourmaster Dan Cairney. Working closely with Tata’s residents’ group, the harbourmaster has put these additional safety actions in place for the busy holiday season.

“Tata is both one of the Bay’s most popular swimming beaches and the only water-skiing beach and we want everyone enjoying water activities there to stay safe. We share locals’ concerns about a possible accident involving a swimmer or paddler and a boat or jet-ski in or around the water-ski access lane,” he says.

Dan said his first actions were putting the buoys out a month earlier this year and adding several extra 5 knot limit buoys.

Visiting Tata in November, he met with a group representing residents and bach-owners to discuss what can be done within current marine legislation to increase safety for boats, jet-skis, swimmers and paddlers sharing the water.

“We’re working together to improve safety for all. Water activity at Tata has changed a lot over the years, with jet-skis as well as boats now towing skiers, wakeboarders and ski biscuits.

“There are many more swimmers, some out ocean training, plus kayakers, paddleboarders, and waka ama paddlers. Many of the kayakers are out fishing, and electric foiling boards are the newest thing. It’s a busy beach.”

Trial safe swimming and paddling zone This summer and throughout 2022, Dan has authorised the voluntary trial of a boat exclusion/safe swimming and paddling zone, on the right of the ski lane buoys and extending out to the 200-metre limit off the northern point and around the Tata islands.

“We are trialling making this northern end of the beach their safe zone. Swimmers and paddlers move more slowly than power-craft so can’t take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Boats, jet-skis and foiling boards must always observe the 5 knot speed limit around the Tata islands, with towing a skier or biscuit not permitted in this area.

of a swimmer or paddler at risk but are liable for infringement penalties of up to $200. Paddlers bringing down kayaks, waka or paddleboards should launch outside the buoys and only cross the ski-lane safely and promptly when there is no boating activity.”

New ski-lane safety signage Also discussed at the meeting was how the beachfront road and the access path through Cornwall Reserve both deliver beach-goers directly into the boat lane area, with many people not properly understanding the “no swimming while skiing is in progress” rule. To address this, TDC have made several new signs including portable signs for the top of the access walkways above the ski lane.

“Most of the year when no boats are about, this convenient part of the beach is for everyone,” says Dan. “But when boats and jet-skis are towing, swimmers can only swim when the access lane is inactive. They must stay watchful, close to shore, and leave the water as soon as a boat and skier is ready to start, or coming back in from the open water.

“We’re also reminding boat and jet-ski owners that towing and higher speeds are only permitted within the access ski lane and out in the open water. Boats parked up outside the ski lane on either side of the boat ramp must stay within 5 knots until 200 metres offshore. A spotter must be on board for safety if you’re towing a skier or biscuit tube.

“It is also important that people using the ski lane know that the ski lane is legally only in place for boats towing, and not for general high-speed use. The reason for this is that skiers and ski biscuiters often fall into the water and we want to minimise the number of high-speed craft in this confined space to reduce the risks of someone being run over.”

Boaties can find all this information in the Boating and Water Sports 2021/22 safety brochure at the top of the ramp.

Dan also reminds visitors there is great safe swimming and paddling to the left of the ramp, with less people and no power-boating activity.

“Access is easy from either the front reserve, or the beach walkways off Peninsula Road. This year we want everyone to have a great beach day out, then go home happy and safe.”

“Pōhara Hall is ready for a revival. It’s time to make it shine again says incoming Pōhara Hall Management committee secretary Anita Hutchinson. “We have a vision for the hall, but our first priority is to get it cleaned up and well maintained,” she says in reference to the hall’s physical state.

Built in 1924 the hall was originally funded by the Cement Workers Union, and was utilised by locals as a venue for movies and social events. In 1984 it became the property of Tasman District Council (TDC) in an exchange between the Cement Works and the Council for property development changes in the Pōhara Valley.

In practical terms the newly formed committee is a group of community volunteers with a common goal of managing, maintaining and polishing the hall back to its former glory.

“The group is supported by residents assisting the committee in bringing life back to the hall,” says committee chair Sarah. “[The committee’s objective is to] to revive the hall, organise fundraisers and gather local support to make the Pōhara Hall great again turning it into a vibrant space where all of our

A recent graduate of Collingwood Area School is moving on to pastures new to further her farming education.

In January, Rockville resident Aaliyah Lockwood starts a two-year programme at Smedley Station and Cadet Training Farm in Hawkes Bay. According to its website, the “high quality, accredited farming courses provide hands-on agriculture skills training for young farmers,” and allows “young Kiwis to become the best future farmers of New Zealand”.

The low intake to the highly respected programme means competition for places is fierce. Aaliyah is one of 13 successful applicants from this year’s pool of around 120, and is only the second female in the past 10 years to be accepted onto the course.

Her interview, conducted at the station in early July, clearly went well. “They let me know about four hours later; I hadn’t even left the airport,” says Aaliyah. “I was overwhelmed by it all.”

Aaliyah is no stranger to farming; since June this year she has been working full-time on a Rockville dairy farm managed

by Clay Paton, but her family have been in the business for generations. “My Grandad has a sheep and beef farm on the West Coast, and my Dad managed a farm out west when I was about one-two years-old.” Later she worked on the family’s

Rockville dairy farm for around eight years until it was sold a few months ago, and says she has no intention of changing direction. “I’ve always wanted to work on a farm.”

One of the reasons the Smedley programme is so popular is there are no fees; cadetship training is fully sponsored and includes all on-farm food and accommodation expenses. All students need to buy is their own clothes, harness gear and dogs. “I’ll probably take my own saddle and bridle,” says Aaliyah.

Federated Farmers meat and wool chair Pax Leetch is a Smedley “old boy” and says Aaliyah’s acceptance onto the programme is a “great achievement”. Presenting her with a new pair of shearing jeans on behalf of Federated Farmers last Saturday, Pax said, “Congratulations and we wish you well, and look forward to hearing how it goes. It’s a fantastic place” As she embarks on a life-changing experience, Aaliyah is quick to acknowledge the support of friends, colleagues and family. “I’d like to thank Mum and Dad, Nan and Grandad and everyone I work with and gave me references. Also a massive thanks to Clay and Joy Paton for taking me on.”

Looking further ahead, Aaliyah is already sketching out her future plans. “I’d love to go to Aussie and work on a big station.”

But her ultimate ambition is to carry on the Lockwood family tradition. “I’d like to be able to buy Grandad’s farm.”

As the year draws to a close, we wanted to give you a progress report on the Onetahua Restoration Project. The project, which aims to eradicate predators from an area covering Farewell Spit to the northern end of Whanganui inlet, is a partnership between Tasman Environmental Trust, HealthPost Nature Trust and Manawhenua ki Mohua and is supported with funding from Predator Free 2050.

The draft eradication feasibility plan went out for review by technical experts in the field of pest eradication. These experts have had hands-on experience with projects like ours and we have now received all four reviews back. There is more strategic work and refining of the technical work to be done and a workshop with Dr Mike Thorsen and Rhys Millar of Ahikā consultants is scheduled for late January. Tony Bateup, community liaison, has been conducting a survey and gathering feedback from local residents about their hopes and concerns in relation to the land and the project itself.

That feedback will be raised early next year in the technical workshop.

Members of the public are invited to our open day at te Whare Whakatā, next to the car parking area on the farm park at the entrance to the spit, on 6 January, beginning at 11am.

Attendees are encouraged to bring plenty of questions, a water bottle and some sturdy footwear as we will be conducting some guided walks across the spit.

Leaving the Whare at 1pm, walkers will be guided by Onetahua Restoration Project conservationist Marian Milne, and local historian, DOC veteran and botanist Simon Walls.

Simon will be sharing his broad knowledge of local biology, history and geology with walkers and broadcaster Kim Hill will be donning her sensible shoes and interviewers hat, turning the walk into an interpretive and interactive experience. The walk will follow the path through the farm park and over to Fossil Point on the outside beach. We will also have an interactive display board, where you can scribble down your ideas, concerns and questions. If the weather or the Covid situation deteriorates, the open day will not go ahead.

In other news, we are delighted to welcome 18-yearold Bradley Shields to the team as our newest recruit under the Jobs for Nature programme. Bradley is a wildlife photographer, conservationist and bird enthusiast. You can see his photography on display at the open day.

We tend to call all gulls “seagulls” but there is no such bird. Golden Bay is home to three species of gull – tarapuka, the black-billed gull; tarapunga, the red-billed gull; and karoro, the black-backed gull.

Tarapuka, the black-billed gull is the most critically endangered gull in the world. Found only in New Zealand, Rototai is currently home to twenty of these nesting birds.

With their numbers in rapid decline, it was encouraging to read in The GB Weekly (17/12) that a group of Rototai residents have started a trap line at Rototai.

Introduced predators will take eggs, chicks and even adult birds. Human disturbance can cause them to abandon their nest. These birds need all the help they can get.

Both red-billed and black-billed gulls are easy to distinguish from the much larger black-backed gull.

I was amused by the cunning of the black-backed gulls at Tarakohe who know the sound of the mussel boats and converge on them as they are pulling into the Port to pilfer mussels from the sacks on board.

The red-billed gull will be best known for harassing you for your fish and chips but not so the black-billed gull.

Tarapuka is not commonly known for scavenging food.

More shy and not so raucous, these birds tend to mind their own business. Watch out for their long, thin black beaks, which are easily distinguished from the shorter and stouter bright red beak of the red-billed gull. A similar size to red-billed gulls, the black-billed gull has paler wings and a thinner black border on the wing tips. Challenge yourself and see if you can identify one.

Spread the word about how special these gulls are and help prevent their extinction.

Bagging Plant Operator – Golden Bay Dolomite

Sollys requires the services of a fit, motivated person to assist in The Golden Bay Dolomite Team in the Bagging Plant operation.

General Processing Plant experience would be advantageous. Duties will include monitoring the processing plant operations in the bagging room, cleaning and tidying the bagging room. You will need to be able to lift and handle a 25kg bag, to place them on pallets.
