Driving home from our Takaka office on Tuesday evening, blissful ignorance quickly turned to anxiety. The news bulletin on Radio New Zealand reported that a commuity case of Covid-19 had been detected and the Government would shortly be making an “important” announcement. Like many of us in Golden Bay, I suspect, I thought “here comes another partial lockdown for Aucklanders”, but it soon became apparent that the Government’s promised “sharp and severe” response was likely to be felt in the Mainland. It was still a shock, however, when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the entire country would be heading into Alert Level 4 lockdown from midnight. It may be unwelcome and unexpected, but our community has been here before, and we know what to do. For us at The GB Weekly that meant hastily contacting our printers, couriers and delivery agents to check today’s paper would still be published and distributed. At the time of (hopefully) going to press, the procedures we adopted during last year’s lockdown are all in place. Also at this time, we don’t yet know how long the Government will keep us at Alert Level 4; we hope that everything will be back to normal by the weekend, but if lockdown is extended, rest assured that we’ll do our very best to continue publishing your GB Weekly and getting it to your mailbox. We appreciate that for businesses in the Bay – including many of our loyal advertisers – this is a worrying time, but we are here to support you in the best way we can. To our readers: we will endeavour keep you up to date with what’s happening in the Bay, including information on Alert Levels and access to key services. Most people, including us at The GB Weekly, will be working from home until we drop to at least Alert Level 2. In the meantime you can get in touch with us through our normal telephone number and email address. Stay safe, and be kind.
