This year’s Bay Art and Young@Art officially opened on Saturday afternoon. Golden Bay High School hall swelled with artwork by artists of all ages from across the community. Hosted by the Golden Bay Arts Council, all submissions were judged well in time for the announcement of place-getters. Beforehand, Sarah Thomas and Nerissa Cottle presented certificates to the children who entered Young@Art and read out the compliments made by the group who assessed the artworks. Each child was allowed to select a gift from an assortment of art materials, supplied by the Arts Council. GB Arts Council chair Deborah Rhodes then formally opened Bay Art, thanking the many volunteers who helped put the exhibition together, as well as the contributors and the three judges, Mike Ward, Craig Potton and James Alker. She specifically thanked Nerissa Cottle, Beryl Hughes and Sarah Thomas “for making Young@Art happen”. She said that Arts Worker Tania Marsden had helped make the whole occasion and had gone “beyond the call of
duty”. Tania, Marg Braggins and Kathy Reilly were extended a big thanks for using their skills to “bring it all together”, while curators Murray Hedwig and Trevor Polglase were also thanked for “doing an outstanding job”. Digital Art and Group Works are two new categories this year, and Deborah encouraged everyone to appreciate the community quilt brought together by Margy Meys, Mohua Social Services and Community Health. A long list of local sponsors was acknowledged, including Creative Communities for funding, and Manawhenua ki Mohua for their blessing of the exhibition. 2D Category: Winner: Sarah-Jane Brown, Floral Punch. Supreme Winner: Chris Watson: The Quiet Revolution of Uncertainty: Lockdown 2020. Chris was clearly delighted to receive the award. This is the second time she has achieved Supreme Winner status. Of the black-and-white photograph taken from the lower end of Commercial Street looking north, she said: “It was taken during Lockdown, at night. My thinking was about the uncertainty of Covid – we just didn’t know what was going to happen…But the real thing is the scene – that it’s The Quiet Revolution – and it’s right there.” She explained there is no editing in the photograph, “Apart from my push in the colours in the sky.” Golden Bay’s iconic Bay Art and Young@Art exhibition is open daily from 10am-4pm until Monday 26 October, when the People’s Choice Awards for both sectors will be announced. Election results JO RICHARDS
The West Coast-Tasman electorate was painted red on Saturday night as the Labour Party celebrated a historic result. Sitting MP Damien O’Connor was returned with a thumping majority of around 5,000 votes over his nearest challenger – National’s Maureen Pugh. There was more bad news for Judith Collins’ ambitions in this corner of the country as she saw her party vote crushed and the electorate handed over to her red rivals. National weren’t the only party feeling the blues on election night; some of the minor parties including NZ First, Advance NZ, Social Credit and Outdoors, struggled to register more than a token presence at the ballot box. But there were some winners amongst the outsiders, with Act showing a strong resurgence and the Green Party putting in a solid performance. Speaking to The GB Weekly on Tuesday morning, Damien was understandably delighted with the result – not only on home turf – but around the country, which had given his party the opportunity to govern independently if it chooses to do so. “It’s very exciting and very daunting,” said Damien explaining that no decision had yet been made about a possible coalition. “It’s too early, but we have the numbers to govern alone.” He is also waiting to hear whether he will retain his ministerial portfolio which encompasses agriculture, biosecurity, food safety and rural communities. “I live in hope that I can contribute positively in areas that I feel passionate about.” Asked what his priorities are for the electorate, Damien says “Clearly with Covid in mind, it’s the retention and building of job opportunities; people need better incomes, security and homes.” He recognises that one of the region’s key economic sectors is suffering and will need help to get through. “Tourism is the industry with the most acute need and, while there has been a strong domestic market, international tourism businesses need some support.” He believes that when travel restrictions ease, tourism operators will see a surge in activity as New Zealand will be a “highly desirable” destination. He is also aware that, although the primary sector had been affected less by Covid-19, there were specific challenges ahead for the horticulture industry especially at harvest time when there was a spike in requirements for workers. “We’re working with the sector to help Kiwis get...
