TOGETHER, WE SOAR. Dear Latin Community, At its core, Latin is about community. From the bottom of our hearts, the Baldecchis are grateful for the trustees, alumni, parents, faculty/staff, and students who have made our first fall in Charlotte fantastic!

We have all enjoyed a festive beginning to the school’s 50th Anniversary year. Founders Day started with welcoming past teachers and alumni who walked our nascent campus on that first day in 1970.

Founding trustee Bob Knight joined our entire community on the football field for a commemorative photo, and the day ended with a rocking pep rally where we celebrated Victor E Hawk’s 50th birthday with special guests Sir Purr and Homer. Several weeks later, we welcomed approximately 40 alumni musicians back to campus for a performance of Les Misérables in Concert that moved the audience to tears. It was remarkable to hear generations of voices sing as one, including those of Dennis Kokenes ’79 and his daughter Lea ’14. Completing a festive fall celebration was the 50th Anniversary Reunion Weekend, the dedication of the Howard Levine Athletic Campus, and the Oyster Roast, where the sounds of the Blue Dogs welcomed more than 1,000 guests.

Charlotte Latin School now has a new front door. The Inlustrate Orbem Building is beautiful on the outside, but what happens on the inside makes it truly remarkable. It is one thing to imagine how a space will be used in architectural drawings, but it is quite another to watch as students naturally gather and work in areas designed for quiet study and small group collaboration. Seeing master teachers take full advantage of flexible educational space with seamless technology to enhance student learning and engagement is truly exciting. Just like the SAT, Thies Auditorium, Horne Performing Arts Center, and Beck Student Activities Center before it, the Inlustrate Orbem Building has transformed this campus and catapulted the student experience forward. Those first families who took a leap of faith on September 9, 1970, would be so proud of what this school has become.

The generosity of our community has made all of this possible. Thanks to our families and friends, we have crossed over the $25 million mark toward Vision2020’s $30 million goal. Starting with our Board of Trustees, administrative team, faculty/staff, and foundational donor families, we have been able to accomplish so much. We are grateful, but still have work to do if we are to reach and surpass our largest fundraising goal ever. This year, as you celebrate your own Charlotte Latin memories and experiences, I ask you to stretch your generosity for the next generation of students, parents, and teachers.

When it came time, in 2018, to determine who would best shepherd the 50th Anniversary planning process and guide the celebration of this important milestone, Sally Gray Smith ’82, Debbie McMahan Frail ’88, and Frances Fennebresque Hankins ’97 became the anniversary dream team.

Individually, they are savvy, vivacious, creative women who love this school and all that it means in their lives, but collectively they are a powerhouse of event planning, celebration, and recognition of 50 years of sustained excellence with an eye towards the future. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Charlotte Latin community is grateful for their countless hours of work and preparation to make it all a reality.

Sally Gray Smith, Class of 1982, has served as our devoted and well-connected Director of Alumni Relations for almost 15 years. Sally’s two sons, Griffin ’14 and Gray ’15, are Latin Lifers. In her role as Alumni Director, event planning, hosting parties and gatherings, and celebrating an alma mater are second nature. She is a true professional and her love of Charlotte Latin is always on display.

Frances Fennebresque Hankins, Class of 1997, is mom to Jack in Grade 6 and Francie in Grade 2. She is omnipresent on campus, as mom and volunteer — serving on May Day Play Day and Celebrate Latin committees, as grade level liaison, AGB President, room parent, even assistant teaching in Kindergarten.

Debbie McMahan Frail, Class of 1988 and parent to Michael ’17 and Reagan ’23, is an incredibly active and engaged alumna.

She has served in many capacities, including chair of May Day Play Day, Parents’ Council President, Alumni Governing Board member, and currently she serves on the Board of Trustees.

50TH ANNIVERSARY

FOUNDERS DAY Charlotte Latin School first opened its doors on September 9, 1970.

50 years later, on September 9, 2019, students arrived on campus with a variety of plans in store to celebrate Founders Day.

T-shirts and Art Project All students received anniversary t-shirts and participated in a Founders Day art project. Wingpsan is now installed in the Inlustrate Orbem Building.

Lower School Assembly Students were greeted by familiar faces — retired Lower School teachers Mrs. Cathcart, Mrs. Bickett, and Mrs. Owen — who reenacted the early days.

Feast and Photo Middle and Upper School students ate a cookout lunch in Patten Stadium. EVERYONE on campus — more than 2,000 people, including founding trustee Bob Knight, former and retired faculty members, alumni and guests — then gathered for a school-wide drone photo on the field.

Hawk Release The Carolina Raptor Center released a rehabilitated broad-winged hawk. The hawk checked out his new environs, then fittingly flew straight for the trees to the Hawks Quest challenge course, where we know he felt right at home before his migration to South America.

Mayor’s Proclamation Mayor Vi Lyles greeted the crowd and officially proclaimed September 9, 2019, “CHARLOTTE LATIN SCHOOL DAY” in Charlotte.

“I commend its observance to all citizens,” said the Mayor.

Pep Rally The grand finale was a pep rally in the Beck Student Activities Center and a birthday party for Victor E Hawk! His surprise guests were Sir Purr and Homer the Dragon.

Service Project Supporting our all-school service effort, Hawks Feed Hungry Hearts, students participated in a Founders Day Service Learning project. Funded by donations from the Latin community, students packed more than 1,970 Blessing Bags which were distributed via Urban Ministry Center/The Men's Shelter of Charlotte.

This school would not exist were it not for the forethought and vision of our founders. Likewise, the orchestration of a day such as Founders Day could not be possible without countless volunteers and innumerable hours of preparation and planning. Tremendous gratitude to the 50th Anniversary committee for the time and effort that made this day possible.

On Sunday, September 22, 2019, approximately 40 alumni performers — accompanied by the Upper School Concert Choir and directed by Craig Estep — returned to the Durrett stage in Thies Auditorium to perform Les Misérables in Concert.

LES MISÉRABLES IN CONCERT

R

eturning to Latin for the 50th Anniversary Les Misérables alumni concert was transformative in ways I did not expect. I felt as if I was in high school all over again with a sense of accomplishment and self-actualization, mixed with a hint of anxiety. Was I good enough?

Would I make my school and my loved ones proud? Ironically, I had these same emotions in the 2013 production of Les Misérables — my first show ever. Upon returning for the alumni concert, however, that same spectrum of emotion was pleasantly surprising — this time I was more secure, better equipped. Revisiting this beautiful music after six years, in the school that gave me so many opportunities, is a greater gift than I can ever quantify. Add to that being led again by my hero, Craig Estep, who made my voice what it is today, it leaves me speechless. Ultimately, the performance was perfect. We all made it perfect together.

Milestones and markers of our history inspire reflection. When I reflect on my experience at Latin, I realize that I always felt that I was a part of something — something good. I felt significant, and by the time I graduated, I was a better and more fulfilled person than I ever imagined. That feeling extends to returning to campus for this show and the 50th Anniversary.

I am forever grateful to Latin for cultivating such a significant part of who I am and what I do, and letting me come back and do it again.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

OYSTER ROAST CELEBRATION This first-ever Charlotte Latin community party was hosted on November 9, 2019, in the Beck Student Activities Center and Belk Gym and was attended by more than 1,000 current Latin parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents of alumni. It proved to be an anniversary party like no other — a blast from the past but with food and drinks and live music by the Blue Dogs!

In my thirtieth year at Latin, I have great

appreciation for the Inlustrate Orbem Building and the many ways it facilitates and supports today’s teaching and learning. The spacious, naturally-lit classrooms are simply pleasant places to be. Students and teachers benefit from our new learning spaces. My third floor classroom has a spectacular view of Patten Stadium and the woods beyond. Classrooms offer state-of-the-art technologies, with the flexibility to shift class configurations and suit a variety of instructional approaches.

The Cascade is an inspiring display of functional architectural artistry, drawing students to read quietly, to review course material, or have face-to-face conversations with teachers and peers. Each day, I look forward to teaching in an entirely new way, as this building fosters energy, creativity, and enthusiasm.

THE INLUSTRATE ORBEM BUILDING AND ATHENÆUM On Friday, September 27, 2019, members of the Charlotte Latin community gathered to celebrate two special events: the official opening of the Inlustrate Orbem Building and the unveiling and dedication of one of its foremost features — the Athenæum.

T

hough Upper School students and faculty have enjoyed the expansive Inlustrate Orbem Building since the start of school, this ceremony appropriately celebrated the opening of this long-awaited, state-of-the-art facility. Mr. Baldecchi, Mr. Gregory, Mr. Wall, trustees, and honored guests officially declared the building open for teaching, learning, working, and welcoming.

The Athenæum, located inside the main reception area, was given in honor of Head of Upper School Lawrence Wall, who this year celebrates 20 years at Charlotte Latin. Donated by Alumni Parents Kari and Jonathan Halkyard P’16, ’18 and family, and functioning as the school's new archive room, it includes a curated seasonal display of Latin history and ephemera and seating for contemplation.

“When we learned that the planners of this glorious building had the vision to create a space within it for quiet reflection and discovery, celebrating Latin's history and values, Kari and I shared a glance — one glance confirming what we both knew — that this wonderful space, this Athenæum, at the front door of the Upper School, rejoicing in Latin's history and values must be dedicated in honor of Lawrence Wall who has served Charlotte Latin and its families so expertly for so long,” shared Mr. Halkyard.

A watercolor mural of campus by the talented artist and Alumni Parent, Champagne Maker, will grace one wall of the room. The name “Athenæum” represents Mr. Wall's love of the classics and commitment to teaching Latin and Greek to our Upper School students.

The Athenæum is a space that instills great pride in the members of our community who visit, and great hope for the next 50 years given the rich foundation upon which we stand.

The idea that my love for this school's past, present, and future will hereafter be linked in some way with the memories of all the years represented within the Athenæum's walls, this reliquary of the aspirations and efforts of those who have built CLS and nurtured it to this coming-of-age, is one of the greatest honors of my life. THE HOWARD LEVINE ATHLETIC CAMPUS

The Howard Levine Athletic Campus was officially named in a ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2019.

C

ontinuing a lifelong tradition of philanthropy, Howard Levine ’77 made a transformational $1 million gift toward Charlotte Latin’s Vision2020 campaign, one of the largest capital gifts in the school’s history, thus naming our south campus. “My years at Latin were so important to me,” said Levine.

“It is for that reason that deciding to make this gift was so easy.”

The Howard Levine Athletic Campus was officially named in a ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2019. Surrounded by classmates, friends, family, and members of the Latin community, Levine spoke of his experience at Latin. “I didn’t know what I was getting when I was here,” Levine said. “As an adult, I now

vividly recognize and acknowledge the opportunities that a Latin education allowed me. The culture is still in place after 50 years, and that is phenomenal.”

Levine’s gift showcases Latin’s south campus as an athletic complex. Head of School Chuck Baldecchi said, “This portion of our campus is a special place that the Board and school leadership had the wisdom to purchase when they had the opportunity. These acres truly differentiate Charlotte Latin. Athletics are an extension of the classroom, bringing people together with self-sacrifice, teamwork, and an incredible amount of spirit at the core.”

continued into Upper School and onto the basketball court, and afterward to UNC-Chapel Hill.

He would graduate and then return to Charlotte, where he is a family man, a respected businessman, and a philanthropist. Dr. Ken Collins recalls Levine best as a basketball player. “He was an excellent playmaker, a position which helped his team succeed by helping his teammates score,” said Dr. Collins. “That’s what Howard has been doing his whole life.”

Classmate Jeff Goodman ’77 spoke about his friend and his accomplishments, “Howard's efforts away from the board room have been a blessing to many people. The naming of this campus is an ongoing reminder of his generosity.”

The Howard Levine Athletic Campus includes playing and practice fields, concessions, locker rooms, a training room, cross country trails, a lake, and a tennis complex. “Certainly, Howard Levine exemplifies what it means to serve others and to give back. Thanks to this generous gift, we can honor our mission to students for generations to come. On behalf of the Board and the entire Latin community, we could not be more grateful.” said Board Chair Thad Sharrett ’89.

While there’s no guidebook on parenting, we feel one goal is to provide our children with opportunities, experience, and tools that help best prepare them for the future. While we strive to accomplish much of this under our own roof, Latin is a second home where they will spend countless hours with classmates, teachers, and school resources. Latin will, in fact, provide Beckett and Sullivan with a solid foundation as they face life choices. We are thankful and fortunate to all those that play a hand in this and look forward to the many years ahead!

In the past year, through alumni takeovers of the @clsalumni Instagram account, I’ve witnessed a day in the life of an acrobat in Las Vegas, a motorsports photographer, musicians in Nashville, artists in Charlotte and New York, a women’s soccer coach at Emory & Henry College, film professionals in Hollywood, and countless other impressive teachers, coaches, small business owners, corporate professionals, and hard-working HAWKS all over the world. What better way to kick off celebrations of Charlotte Latin’s 50th year than by showcasing the fantastic things Hawks are doing. I am so proud to see the sheer variety of occupations and interests, and I look forward to seeing alumni continue to connect with one other and with Charlotte Latin.

Charlotte Latin brought Blair Shwedo and Ruth Van Dyke Wyatt together as friends. Members of the Class of 2002, Blair and Ruth — along with their spouses Emily Shwedo and John Wyatt — live and work in Charlotte. We talked with Blair and Ruth to explore what it’s like to go from students, to alumni, to current parents at Latin.

What is the best part of parenting a little Hawk?

I love being able to share school experiences directly with my children. My daughters ride the same bus I rode, eat in the same cafeteria, play on the same playground and even interact with some of the same faculty members. ―― Blair Shwedo ’02

Ruth: It’s surreal. I always have to remind myself that I’m there as a parent and not a student! Seeing Jack’s excitement every day and knowing that he is at the best possible place for him provides incredible comfort. We are very thankful to have the opportunity to experience Latin as parents.

What is it like walking the halls of the Lower School as a parent?

Blair: It’s very nostalgic. Seeing teachers teach in the same classrooms that I sat in 25 years ago brings back many memories.

Attending Daddy’s Day in Kindergarten last year reminded me of how excited we got when the P.E. teachers let us play a few games of dodgeball. I think the water fountains at Latin must

Why do you feel it is important for Latin alumni to support their alma mater?

source from the Fountain of Youth because every teacher I run into from my childhood looks like they have not aged a day.

What has (or hasn’t) changed about Latin?

Ruth: The welcoming feeling of the campus has remained, but, as the world has changed, Latin has thoughtfully adjusted. Latin has always been and will continue to be a place of high academics, but there seems to be a greater focus on social-emotional learning. As parents, we are thankful for this focus, given the ever-changing environment and the pressures of social media.

What Latin experiences do you hope your children will also have?

Blair: Academic preparedness and confidence were big takeaways for me. Latin gives its students a tremendous leg up when it comes to preparing children for the next level of academics, and I hope that my children will experience this.

Who is your philanthropy role model?

Ruth: The Latin community, and in particular our Class of 2002, are role models. Every year I’m struck by how many willing classmates, near and far, step up and give back to Latin.

I love showing my appreciation for all that is Latin through my volunteering and donations.

My life would look very different had I not had the opportunity to attend Latin.

Blair: Latin is a special place and continues to evolve its facilities and curriculum to prepare students for the next steps in their life. Donors from prior generations were instrumental in making the school a special place when I was a student. As alumni, we should give to ensure that future generations have a similar experience.

Why did you, as a couple, choose to support Vision2020?

Emily and Blair: Since my graduation, I had the wonderful opportunity to return to campus and interact with current students. The visit was a strong reminder of the meaningful experiences I had, and it also made me appreciate aspects that I had overlooked as a student. Emily and I committed to Vision2020 before we decided to send our children to Latin. We wanted to acknowledge how well prepared I was for college and ensure that future students are similarly prepared.

Ruth and John: We support Vision2020 to show appreciation for Latin, for what it provided me as a student and what I know it will provide our children.

Additionally, we want to be an example to our children and to show them that as parents, we are “all in” for them, their school, their education, and personal development.

SENIORS LAST DAY LUAU Class of 2019

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the Alumni Association hosted a Last Day Luau for the Class of 2019.

Seniors enjoyed breakfast and were entertained with music, inflatable games, and a magician in the Beck Student Activities Center.

Sally Gray Smith ’82 shared information about the Alumni Association and the importance of staying connected to Latin and fellow classmates.
