Gratitude Report 2024-25

Page 1

From the Head of School and Board Chair

Dear Latin community,

When you steward a school with an extraordinary 55-year history, you soon learn just how many smart, talented people came before you. That tradition is humbling and inspiring. At Charlotte Latin School, legions of people over the years have given everything they had to make sure that Latin’s students were seen as their full selves and could become their best selves. That isn’t just history — their efforts motivate us every day, as we make sure that Charlotte Latin’s tradition of excellence continues into the future.

While student-teacher relationships are the foundation of the Charlotte Latin experience, thousands of people give generously and tirelessly to Charlotte Latin, both with money and time. They foster the crucial experiences that awaken students’ curiosity and mold them into leaders. Charlotte Latin couldn’t exist without all our donors and volunteers, parent organizations, and devoted alumni.

This Gratitude Report honors that work and contains updates on some of the ways the members of the Latin community lift each other up: teachers who teach other teachers, former students who advise current students, parents who support our entire community. This Report also marks a transition between the school’s philanthropic past and its future: Joanne O’Brien Beam, who has done extraordinary work over the past five years as our Director of Philanthropy, is taking a well-earned retirement. While we will miss her verve and her dedication, we are delighted to herald the arrival of the extremely accomplished Kerry Johnston as our new Director of Advancement. (Please turn to pages 46 and 49 for personal messages from each of them.)

The selfless people of Charlotte Latin believe deeply in this school; every day, they do everything in their power to help our students understand the complicated world we live in and make sure they can find their place in it. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey: because of your generosity and your commitment to the future of Charlotte Latin School, we can continue to enlighten the world.

Forever grateful,

From the Chief Financial and Operations Officer

Your love for Charlotte Latin shines through the many ways you give: you champion our students, lift up our teachers, and invest in the future of our school. It has been a privilege to witness that generosity firsthand.

Philanthropy plays a vital role in Latin’s financial health. Tuition covers just over 80% of what it takes to educate a Latin student each year. The Latin Fund and our endowment income help bridge the gap, allowing us to plan with confidence and respond to needs and opportunities as they arise. Thanks to you, I’ve been able to say “yes” more often than not to opportunities— a gift anyone in my role would appreciate.

This year, our community’s remarkable generosity to the Honor & Glory Campaign meant we could begin work on several new athletics facilities once the funding was in place. It’s a powerful example of how philanthropy turns plans into action. I’m grateful to our board and volunteers for shaping a thoughtful, cost-conscious approach to these projects.

We also continued Latin’s campus master planning process this year, laying important groundwork to support long-term growth. Our endowment, built through years of philanthropic investment, allows us to think boldly and act responsibly, now and in the future. Your support helps illuminate what’s possible.

After three meaningful and rewarding years at Latin, I retired this summer. I’ve worked closely with Karen Moore, our new CFOO, and our Finance Committee to ensure a smooth and successful transition. The school is in great hands.

Thank you for your support, your trust, and your belief in Latin. It’s been an honor to serve this extraordinary community.

Class of 2025

Excerpts from the remarks by Head of School Chuck Baldecchi at the Commencement Exercises on May 23, 2025:

There are 144 members of this senior class, sharing an impressive mean GPA of 3.84. The class submitted 1,398 applications to 203 colleges. They were admitted to 165 schools, and have chosen to matriculate at 72 colleges or universities in 27 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada.

Fifteen seniors will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; seven will attend Appalachian State and Auburn Universities respectively; six will attend Clemson University. This is only a small sampling of destinations for members of this graduating class. Two students from the class will attend U.S. military academies: one Navy and one Air Force. Ninety-five seniors reported 217 merit scholarships at 82 different colleges and universities, totaling more than $15 million!

And in a show of friendship and resiliency, just one week ago today, eight seniors shared a 12,139-step journey together to commemorate their last day of school. Beginning at 4:46 a.m., they walked over six miles to campus, only to find that school had been canceled due to a water main break. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have students disappointed to learn that school was canceled.

They are resilient and intelligent. They are leaders. They are courageous, creative, talented, and impressive. They are Latin.

PROFESSIONAL

DEVELOPMENT AT LATIN

(AND AROUND THE WORLD)

Professional development is an essential part of being a teacher at Charlotte Latin: every year, our faculty keeps growing and learning, finding new ways to bring the world into their classrooms. Kelly Willis, Director of Global Studies, explains how a single conference tied together many threads of purposeful professional development:

The Global Studies program at Charlotte Latin School includes different components: the curriculum; travel and exchange programs; and professional development for teachers. We’re working toward global competence, which can be defined as the knowledge needed to thrive in a diverse, globalized society. Fostering our students’ global competence helps them to learn to live together in increasingly diverse communities — while illuminating common challenges and preparing them with the skills to collaborate on solutions.

I like for us to share what we’re doing, so every year we go to this conference — the Institute for Global Learning — that serves a network of schools that participate in global education. This year I reached out to a number of teachers who I knew had been doing really cool things and we presented on “Teaching Teachers: Building Global Competence.”

We sent Ginger McAdams [Grade 1 Teacher] and Gretchan Frederick [Upper School World Languages Department Head] to Peru in June 2024. That affected their classroom instruction, but Ginger was also a member of our Lower School professional learning community, or PLC, about global competence. And Rachel Wells [Lower School World Languages Teacher] was leading that PLC, so I knew she could talk about how we structured that. Some other schools don’t have the money for travel programs, but I knew they would benefit from learning how we structured PLCs.

I also tapped Wendy Staffieri [Middle School Spanish Teacher] because she’s led a couple of trips abroad and hosted students through the exchange program. I thought she would be a good person to talk about not just what students learn on these trips, but how professionals can grow as educators by leading an international trip.

I’ve been to this conference five times now, but it’s amazing to be able to take other Latin teachers and watch them get engaged and energized. To move the Global Studies program forward, we need to get more people on the team, build

them up, and let them run. So our teachers are going to teach other teachers, and then the children are going to move forward.

The conference was in Miami this year: the Latin Fund paid for the five of us to go from its professional development fund. And when Ginger and Gretchan went to Peru, Ginger had won a World Affairs Council Award that paid for $3,500 of it, but the Latin Fund covered the remainder.

Next year’s conference is in Atlanta: we can drive, so I want to bring more people. I want more teachers to go and get inspired. They don’t need to change their whole curriculum, but if they take away one nugget of knowledge, then their classroom is better for it. And if what they say resonates with somebody else, then we’re helping other schools run with global education. When people ask us for our slide decks, we share them: it’s not our proprietary material. We want to pay it forward and enlighten the world.

“In Miami, our days were filled with presenting what we are doing at Latin to fellow teachers, developing connections with teachers from all around the world who share the same goal of global education, and learning from brilliant administrators, educators, and directors. In these moments, we all find so much gratitude for the opportunities and resources provided to us at Latin.” — Ginger McAdams

Lighting the Way Forward

PIONEERING THE YOUNG WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do in high school and I think that’s pretty normal,” TV news anchor Caroline Hicks ’11 reassured a group of Latin women in the class of ’25. They were gathered in Anne’s Black Box in December for a lunchtime mentorship panel. Female seniors a few months away from graduation heard life wisdom from a panel of Latin alumnae: network, open yourself to new experiences, go outside your comfort zone.

That panel was a highlight of the first year of the Young Women’s Leadership Program. The pilot program was spearheaded by Whitney Duquette (last year an Upper School History Teacher, currently the Upper School’s Interim Dean of Students), who organized it during her tenure as Faculty Fellow in the Student Leadership Development Department, in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations. “I wanted to pair our alums with students,” Duquette said. “These women are finding fulfillment in the world: they can align what they’re doing with their values and their purpose.” (Duquette’s fellowship was funded by the Bob Chapman Fund. The pilot program was funded by the Bob Knight Fund, which was established in honor of Founding Trustee Robert V. Knight Jr. and is directed by Knight’s daughter Ruth (Knight) Gammon ’77 and her husband Chris.)

In its first year, the YWLP hosted the mentorship panel, guided seniors and juniors in a “Pitch Your Purpose” session that taught them the basics of making an elevator pitch, and hosted a colloquium between Katie Morgan P ’21 ’24 (of Latin’s Board of Trustees) and Joanne O’Brien Beam P ’22 (then the school’s Director of Philanthropy). Most crucially, it paired 20 members of the class of ’25 with Latin alumnae who are accomplishing big things, matching them up by fields of interest. Latin graduates eagerly volunteered to be mentors, feeling grateful for how much the school did to prepare them for the world and wanting to pass on that legacy to the students of today.

IMPACT

“We were ten years apart, but we found out how much we had in common,” said mentor E.C. Myers ’16 (public relations coordinator for Conservation Partners).

Her mentee, Darby Collins ’25, added, “Freshman year at Latin, they match you up with an older student through the Sisters club, which is great.

I didn’t realize that my senior year, it would be really nice to have another big sister. E.C. went through the whole year with me.”

Duquette is looking forward to expanding the program’s reach. “It worked out really well having our students hear from people other than college counselors and teachers and parents,” she said. “We’re tapping into one of Latin’s greatest strengths — the people who came before us.”

A Letter from the 2024-25 Latin Fund Chairs

RUTH (VAN DYKE) ’02 AND JOHN WYATT P ’33 ’35 ’38

Our family has had the privilege of experiencing Charlotte Latin School from many perspectives: as alumni, as parents, and for the past two years, as Latin Fund Chairs. And what we saw this year was nothing short of amazing. Our community came together and raised a record-breaking $2,604,602 for the 2024-25 Latin Fund. Thank you!

That incredible show of generosity is a powerful reminder of how much we all believe in this school. Latin is a place where our children are seen, known, and loved. They are nurtured and challenged, surrounded by faculty and staff who care for them deeply – and perhaps most importantly, they are happy.

Your Latin Fund gifts make that possible. Thanks to you, the Latin Fund fuels innovation in the classroom while maintaining our beautiful campus. It supports our incredible teachers and staff, and strengthens every part of the Latin experience. Your philanthropy touches every Hawk, every day.

We are especially grateful to the Latin Fund volunteers who joined us this year. You led by example, shared your stories, and inspired hundreds of families to give back to the school we all love. Thank you for your time, your passion, and your commitment.

Latin teaches our children to lead with compassion and courage. Through your giving, you have modeled those same values. You have shown our students what it looks like to support others, to invest in our community, and to strive for excellence.

Thank you for supporting the Latin Fund, and for supporting our beloved school.

The Latin Fund bought a new laser cutter for the Fab Lab, bolstering the resources for engineering projects. “The whole point is for students to use and become fluent with the machines in the Fab Lab,” says Barbara Morrow, Upper School Engineering Teacher. Previously, the laser cutter was so in demand for projects that involved engraving wood that students had difficulty scheduling time on it. Now, with two machines working in parallel, Latin students have the opportunity to master the technology and explore its possibilities. Morrow says, “They can take their designs and do things that are more creative.”

Addie Rhodes ’27 used the laser cutter for a crucial step in her final project in Introduction to Engineering II: “The laser cutter had to be run around five times to engrave the design deep enough,” she explains. “Each pass took roughly eight minutes — and once each pass was finished, the laser needed to be refocused.” Addie finished the class with a

CHARLOTTE LATIN MADE THE GRADE

FLY DAY is more than Latin’s annual day of giving. It’s an all-day celebration of what we love about Latin. It brings together Hawks near and far – parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and more – to support the Latin Fund.

This year’s assignment? 1,600 donors.

We passed with FLYING blue and white colors: 1,701 donors gave $371,591 to the Latin Fund.

For one day, we encouraged passing notes in the classroom: 2,568 notes were delivered to teachers, coaches, bus drivers, friends in our dining halls, and more.

NEW THIS YEAR: Students practiced the art of gratitude, writing thank-you postcards and delivering class notes across campus.

FLY DAY 8 would not have been possible without the 91 volunteers at FLY DAY HQ who rallied parent and alumni support, passed notes, and wrote thank-you postcards.

A Letter from the Honor & Glory Campaign Chairs

Gabi

Gorelick P ’24 ’26 ’27 ’29 and Trey Morgan P ’25 ’27 ’29

Our families’ love for Charlotte Latin runs deep — and athletics has played a defining role in our children’s experience. At Latin, sports are more than just competition: they’re a cornerstone of school spirit, community, and character development. Whether you’re a varsity athlete striving for new levels of achievement, a fan cheering in the stands, or a Lower School Hawk already imagining your future on the field, you can feel the energy, pride, and connection athletics brings to campus life.

That shared experience inspired us to lead the Honor & Glory Campaign. Launched to strengthen the future of Latin Athletics, this effort has already brought transformative projects to life: lights on Field 2, two new turf fields, and coming up, an auxiliary gym next to the Strength Center. (Thanks to your support, a fourth significant project on Levine Athletic Campus is now a possibility.) All of these additions will create even more opportunities for athletes and coaches to train, compete, and excel.

To our generous donors and volunteers: thank you. You are true game changers. Your investment ensures that the pride we feel in being Hawks today will carry forward for generations to come. We’re excited to continue sharing our progress as new facilities — and new possibilities — take shape across campus.

Credit: Sammy Wagner

Together, we are bringing these

Honor & Glory

priorities to life:

Increasing scheduling flexibility across seasons, teams, and age groups. More space means more time for student-athletes to train and compete while balancing academics and family time.

Maximizing the number of students and sports affected. Every project was designed through the lens of How can we do the most, for the most?

Expanding opportunities for TK–12 athletic programming. We’re not just thinking about today’s varsity athletes — we’re making sure that our youngest Hawks can grow in their athletic pursuits from the very start of their Latin journey.

HONOR & GLORY DONORS

We thank the game changers making this vision a reality. Names in bold reflect leadership donors of $25,000 or more as of June 30, 2025.

Marshall Insley ’98 A Latin Legacy

In August 2024, friends and family of Marshall Insley ’98 gathered at the south end of Patten Stadium to dedicate the fieldhouse — now officially called the Marshall E. Insley Fieldhouse. Although Insley lost a two-year battle with cancer in October 2021, his positive spirit and his kindness felt palpable at the dedication.

At Charlotte Latin, Marshall served as captain of the Boys’ Soccer team — he excelled in the classroom and on the field. While Marshall was naturally smart, talented, and charismatic, his greatest achievements were driven by his relentless work ethic. He went on to play soccer at UNC Chapel Hill; after college, he had a highly successful career on Wall Street. In addition to the fieldhouse, his name lives on at Latin through the Marshall Insley StudentAthlete Scholarship, which will be awarded to a Latin student (Grades 7–12) receiving financial assistance who reflects Marshall’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence.

In a moving tribute, the Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team wore wristbands displaying Marshall’s former soccer number, 16, at the game following the dedication. That number has a particular resonance for the newly dedicated fieldhouse — for many years prior to bearing Marshall’s name, it was also known as building 16 on Latin’s internal campus numbering system.

Marshall’s friend Spencer Edge ’98 remembers: Marshall Insley’s leadership will forever inspire young Latin student-athletes, just as it did for those of us who were fortunate enough to know him. Naming the fieldhouse at Patten Stadium after him, along with establishing a scholarship in his honor, feels like the perfect tribute to his legacy. The dedication brought together his family, friends, classmates, and teammates in a heartfelt celebration of his immense influence. Coach Horton’s passionate speech about Marshall’s relentless work ethic and determination was incredibly moving, especially with Marshall’s children present. While we miss him dearly, his spirit and legacy live on at Charlotte Latin and beyond.

TOGETHER LEADING LATIN

Cheering on our Latin leaders — the members of our community who generously donate their time, skills, and philanthropic dollars

Alumni Governing Board

The mission of the Alumni Governing Board (AGB) is to advance the values of Charlotte Latin School’s mission statement. This includes strengthening ties with alumni, honoring the school’s faculty, and enriching the broader school community. The AGB includes committees that collaborate with the Office of Alumni Relations to focus on specific needs and develop corresponding strategies to address them.

Bigger ideas. Bolder connections. More Hawk pride than ever.

2024–25 Highlights

Cheers to 50 Years

The class of 1974 celebrated Latin’s first 50th Reunion. The weekend was full of golden moments for our Golden Hawks: classmates returned to campus for a “day in the life,” enjoyed a special performance of the alma mater, explored the Fab Lab, received a standing ovation at the All-School Pep Rally, and reunited with beloved faculty and staff at a festive Saturday night party.

Hawks on Tap with a Twist

Hawks on Tap got a new spin by launching affinity-based gatherings, including Hawks in Finance and Hawks in Healthcare. These events brought alumni together around shared interests and career paths — sparking great conversations and valuable connections.

College Ambassador Program

The Charlotte Latin Alumni College Ambassador Program took flight, with 82 alumni volunteering to support current juniors and seniors. This initiative gives students the chance to hear directly from recent graduates about college life, campus culture, and what to expect after Latin — Hawk to Hawk.

Live from Charlotte Latin

Our first-ever All-Alumni Town Hall featured updates from Head of School Chuck Baldecchi and the Academic Affairs Team. Open to Hawks near and far, it offered a new way for alumni to stay connected to campus life.

Serving Up School Spirit

Our inaugural Alumni Pickleball Tournament brought together 51 alumni players for friendly competition, lots of dinks and lobs, and even more laughs. Whether alumni played or cheered from the sidelines, it was a great success — and the start of a fun new tradition.

Hawks Give Back

We soared past our goal with 807 alumni donors on FLY DAY, setting a new all-time record. Add in the Collins Cup Challenge, and we finished the year with an alumni participation rate of 21% and a total of 906 alumni donors.

“I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Alumni Governing Board during such a meaningful chapter. Witnessing the Alumni Association continue its evolution into a vital and respected force, dedicated to giving back to the school and strengthening the bonds of our community, has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

Curious about what it looks like when a task is joyfully done? Just spend some time with the Charlotte Latin parent volunteer community. They find a million different ways to sustain the excellent experience our students, faculty, and staff deserve — and they do it all with boundless energy, awe-inspiring creativity, and unstoppable smiles.

To the hand-raisers, time-givers, and community-builders — THANK YOU for making Charlotte Latin home.

“When hearts and hands come together in service, the impact is immeasurable. Our volunteers gave more than time — they brought hope, support, and strength to our school community, uplifting teachers, staff, and students in ways that will be felt long after the work is done.”

— Kimber Morgan P ’25 ’27 ’29

Parents’ Council

Latin would not be Latin without our Parents’ Council. Each year, these parent volunteers go above and beyond for our school, always willing to say “yes” to new ideas and programs that build upon our special sense of community. Charlotte Latin’s Parents’ Council supports the Board of Trustees and Administration by employing the unique talents of our parent community in the areas of communication, fellowship, fundraising, and service.

2024–25 Highlights

Together We Soar

The first-ever Soaring Social gave parents, faculty, and staff a chance to celebrate our school community over food, drinks, and live music. Parents’ Council transformed the SAC from a school gym into a swanky night out for grownup Hawks.

Lending a Helping Holiday Hand

In December, the Forum was buzzing with 20 holiday helpers who spent two straight days wrapping 566 gifts for our faculty and staff. These holiday helpers helped teachers, coaches, and staff kick off the holidays with a very important to-do already checked off the list.

One grateful faculty member wrote: “I cannot thank you enough for the beautiful gift of wrapping our gifts! My tree looks beautiful now with all of the stunning packages underneath. Between hosting my family this weekend and traveling next week, it was a tremendous help in managing my time and to-do list, and I know many others feel the same.”

Merry-Making Brunch

Parents’ Council volunteers, students, and administrators worked together to create 68 blankets for Baby Bundles, Latin’s service partner, over a “merry-making” brunch that blended the holiday spirit with our spirit of service.

Booster Club

School spirit fuels the Charlotte Latin community: the Booster Club helps bring that energy to our students, into the classrooms, and onto sidelines. It supports the school’s Athletics Department, including student-athletes, coaches, trainers, and administrators. The Booster Club board manages concessions, helps plan and staff special events, and offers assistance with strategic projects, NCISAA ticketing, and spirit initiatives.

2024–25 Highlights

With an early gift to the Honor & Glory campaign, the Booster Club demonstrated philanthropic leadership and reinforced its commitment to the future of Latin’s athletes.

The Booster Club also appropriated funding to support the Marshall E. Insley Fieldhouse renovation; to upgrade the Strike Guard lightning detection system and HUDL video analysis; to purchase Cold Plunge and Normatec Compression Therapy Sleeves for the Athletic Training Room; and to buy furniture for the new Hawks Media Production office.

Presented in partnership with the Spirit Club, the Powder Puff Football Tournament delighted Upper School students and parents during homecoming weekend.

Lower School Spirit Night welcomed our youngest Hawks into the SAC to cheer for the Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams. They created a spirit tunnel, visited the autograph table, took part in a chicken dance, and thrilled to the Friday night varsity sports energy.

The Winter Sports Showcase kicked off the winter sports season, highlighting the many talents of our swim, basketball, wrestling, and cheer and dance teams.

The 2025 Hawkspy Awards, produced by the Booster Club, was an unforgettable night for our seniors and coaches. The “Sneakers and Sequins” celebration recognized the year’s accomplishments for our student-athletes and coaches, including the Boys’ Golf team’s third consecutive state title, nine individual state champions, and six runner-up state championship teams.

The Booster Club created thousands of spirit buttons for parents to wear proudly in support of their student-athletes.

The concessions team welcomed and trained volunteers for multiple concessions stands at home football games and Latin sporting events all year long.

“Another fantastic year for Latin Athletics, and the Booster Club is so proud to support our student-athletes, coaches, and Athletics Department! I am so grateful to all of the parent volunteers who tirelessly give of their time and resources throughout the seasons. Current and future Hawks are going to love the many upgrades coming to our athletic facilities thanks to the Honor & Glory Campaign, and all of the families that have supported it. The competitive spirit is strong at Charlotte Latin!”

Latin Arts Association

The Charlotte Latin community embraces creativity, from the open-air sculptures across campus to the incredible student artwork lining our walls. The parent volunteers of Latin Arts Association work tirelessly to support, enhance, and promote the arts community at Charlotte Latin, including choral and instrumental music, creative writing, theater arts, visual arts, and speech and debate.

2024–25 Highlights

Art in Motion

The first-ever Charlotte Latin ArtsWalk invited the Latin community to a stellar afternoon of student music and speech performances, a gallery walk showcasing artwork from Grades TK–12, open rehearsals for the Upper School play Alkestis, and a tour of 17 permanent campus art installations.

Behind the Curtain of The Drowsy Chaperone

Anne’s Black Box was transformed into a 1920s speakeasy for this year’s Behind the Curtain event, ahead of the opening of The Drowsy Chaperone. Guests were treated to food, fellowship, and a directors’ talk with insights about the show, casting, and production from Matt Cosper, Ryan Maloney, Ryan Harrison, and Emily Hunter.

Ringing in the Holidays

The fourth annual Community Chorale brought together singers of all ages and talents in Anne’s Black Box.

Art is All Around Us

In February, the Downer Lobby of the Horne Performing Arts Center was home to the Senior Art Show. For March’s Youth Art Month, LAA partnered with the Mint Museum to celebrate the works of students (Kindergarten through Grade 5) from Latin and other independent schools. LAA helped support the Grade 7 field trip and tours of the Gantt Center, McColl Center, VAPA Center, and Mint Museum.

Speech & Debate Showcase

At the annual Speech & Debate Showcase, students engaged in a mock debate and delivered thoughtprovoking speeches on topics such as the psychology of body posture, new ways of viewing regret, and the implications of school dress codes.

Blue Review

LAA celebrated the launch of the 2024–25 Blue Review — Latin’s award-winning literary magazine, showcasing both the visual arts and creative writing — with a gathering of students, faculty, and parents.

A Brand New Thies Auditorium

The newly renovated Thies Auditorium welcomed full-house audiences to the production and concert series. Following the performances, receptions celebrated our multifaceted students for bringing their many talents to the stage.

“I take so much pride in being part of this vibrant, hardworking, and welcoming organization. The momentum of the arts community at Latin generates so much excitement: I can’t wait to see our students and our community continue to build, celebrate, and be recognized for their many successes.”

DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY, 2020-25

Dear Charlotte Latin School community,

I was once given this advice: “Take the detours in life — they will make it interesting.” When I first served as counsel on Charlotte Latin School’s Foundation for the Future campaign in 2006–07, I never imagined that a full-time job at Latin would become one of the most fascinating detours of my life.

That campaign introduced me to Charlotte Latin’s remarkable community: nurturing, thoughtful, and deeply student-centered. Seeing the school’s unwavering focus on the whole child inspired me to enroll my son Ryan in Charlotte Latin’s Kindergarten in 2009.

I also served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2018 — but in 2020, Chuck Baldecchi offered me the Director of Philanthropy position. Happily, that role provided a unique opportunity to give back to a place that had already given so much to my family. I originally took the job on an interim basis; I had no idea that I would stay five years.

These past five years have been extraordinary. We have witnessed significant change, remarkable growth, and an incredible depth of investment from the Latin community, all aimed at making our school even stronger and better. Together, we raised funds to renovate Thies Auditorium and to support athletics. We created Sunny’s Legacy and proudly grew the Latin Fund from $1 million to $2.6 million. The Vision 2020 campaign raised $32 million — and I am happy to report that over the past five years, we have collectively raised almost $32 million more.

While these achievements are remarkable, what I will remember best are the people. Charlotte Latin is home to a community of individuals who are committed to making the world a better place. I proudly call myself a Latin Lifer, not because I spent 13 years under the covered walkways as a student, but because Latin has inspired and changed me in a way that will endure for my entire life.

I am grateful to Chuck, the Board of Trustees, and the Admin Team for their visionary leadership and the trust they placed in me to steward Charlotte Latin School’s vital philanthropic work. I am equally thankful for the dedicated Philanthropy and MarCom teams, who worked closely with me to engage our community and foster deep, meaningful relationships. And most of all, I am grateful to every member of this community for their unstinting generosity.

I know I leave the school in good hands with Kerry Johnston, our new Director of Advancement. I look forward to my new role as a member of the Board of Visitors and, of course, as a proud parent of an alum. No matter my role at Charlotte Latin, I will always love this school.

From Kerry Johnston DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

As I begin my Charlotte Latin journey, I am filled with the promise and excitement of new beginnings. I am both impressed and inspired by the incredible generosity demonstrated in this report. The deep commitment, love, and care for Charlotte Latin School, shared by so many, are among the many reasons I am thrilled to be joining this special community.

My husband and I have been part of the independent school world for over 25 years: just a few months ago, we watched our daughter walk across the stage to receive her diploma as a graduate of McDonogh School in Maryland, another wonderful independent school. I have watched my own children flourish in environments where small class sizes allow teachers to build meaningful relationships where each child feels seen and known, where innovative programs challenge students to think critically and creatively, and where character development is woven seamlessly into daily learning. At a first-rate school, students don’t just prepare for tests; they prepare for life. Charlotte Latin is unquestionably one of these schools — which is why I wanted to come here and help it thrive.

Philanthropy doesn’t simply maintain beautiful facilities or fund programs — it makes opportunities possible. Every innovative lab becomes a launching pad for future scientists and entrepreneurs. Every arts program nurtures the next generation of creative leaders. Every exceptional teacher has a legacy of inspiration. Strategic giving transforms not just individual students, but entire communities.

The power of philanthropy can be seen and felt all across the Latin campus this year, thanks to the strong work of the school’s Philanthropy team. I am especially proud to follow in the footsteps of Joanne O'Brien Beam, who has truly served Charlotte Latin with Honor Above All — I wish her all the best in her retirement.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made a gift to the school this year. Your generosity and support ensure that our teachers have all of the tools they need to deliver the best education possible for our students, and that our administration can plan for the future.

Charlotte Latin has a profoundly impressive 55-year history — I’m honored that I can help steward our community’s legacy of philanthropy into many more great days ahead.

A COMMITMENT TO PHILANTHROPY

Celebrating Your Philanthropic Leadership

Each gift to Charlotte Latin matters. Every year, our committed families bolster our school’s culture of philanthropy; some have given to Latin for more than 20 years in a row. We celebrate and acknowledge everyone in our community who chooses to make Latin a philanthropic priority by joining the Latin Society: parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and faculty and staff.

The Schuster Family HAWK CHALLENGE

No matter where you are in your Latin journey, The Schuster Family Hawk Challenge aims to inspire every Hawk to give back to the school that has given us so much.

This year, every new or increased Latin Society gift will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $150,000.

Dan and Mardell Schuster P ’06 ’08 ’10 GP ’35 ’36 wear many hats at Charlotte Latin. They have lived the CLS experience as parents, parents of alumni, and now as proud grandparents.

TO DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT

Latin’s impact on their family motivated them to bring the Schuster Family Hawk Challenge to our community in 2022. They wanted to inspire Latin families to give back to the school that gives us so much. Three years on, their impact continues to grow.

Make your first Latin Society gift of $2,500+ OR Increase the level of your current Latin Society support

This year’s challenge encouraged leadership gifts from parents and alumni, support from grandparents and parents of alumni, and participation on FLY DAY.

The result? Another year of fundraising growth for the Latin Fund with over $2.6 million raised.

True Blue Giving Society

The members of the True Blue Giving Society are Latin’s most generous and loyal alumni donors. The True Blue Giving Society celebrates and recognizes the philanthropic leadership of our alumni; their participation empowers Latin’s leadership to plan for our bright future and continues to set us apart from our peers. True Blue donors are celebrated at a fall cocktail party and invited to a spring State of the School event that explores topics relevant to today’s Hawks.

Celebrating Your Participation

We are one Latin community — and every gift to Charlotte Latin matters.

Your investment is essential to our school’s success and is an act of gratitude. We don’t take any of it for granted. Thank you for your gifts to the Latin Fund, the Honor & Glory campaign, our endowment, and our operating support.

ALUMNI

Alumni Giving Makes a Difference

When a Latin graduate makes a gift to the Latin Fund, 25% of that gift is allocated to the Alumni Endowment.

Established in 1990 and currently valued at over $3 million, Latin’s Alumni Endowment funds four annual Inlustrate Orbem awards, our two Distinguished Faculty Chairs, the Alumni Service Award, our Learning to Fly scholars in the Lower School, and annual support of the Plus Fund.

The strength of the Alumni Endowment also empowers the Alumni Governing Board (AGB) to make investments back into the Charlotte Latin community. This year, the AGB elected to make a leadership gift to the Honor & Glory campaign, paying tribute to the impact Latin’s athletics program had on all Hawks during their time at CLS.

Amy Ballaban (Lower School), Lauren Putman (Middle School), Aaron Koch (Upper School), and Karen McQuaid (Cross-Divisional) were honored in May 2025 as the recipients of this year’s Inlustrate Orbem Awards.

Faculty and Staff

We salute Latin’s faculty and staff who donated to the Latin Fund.

Parents

The Latin parent community is extraordinary. The depth and breadth of our parents’ generosity makes the Latin Fund successful: this year, they had 76% participation. We thank them for their generosity and enthusiasm.

“Latin has continued to invest in me as an educator, through both professional development and by providing cutting-edge classroom resources, like the iPad Pros and Apple TVs we have in our classes. The Latin Fund has made all of this possible for me.”

“Welcome, Mr. Collier”

A poem written for visiting artist Bryan Collier by the Grade 3 classes of Laura Balabushka and Maggie Shamblin

Welcome to Charlotte Latin and Honor Above All.

Welcome to joyful, giggling kids,

Welcome to a school of wonders,

Welcome to nice, caring teachers,

Welcome to fun, football Fridays,

Welcome to yummy, ice cream Wednesdays,

Welcome to delicious-smelling lunchtime,

Welcome to hardworking classrooms with kids that try for excellence,

Welcome to challenging, creative math games,

Welcome to a sea of blue, white, and grey,

Welcome to peace,

Welcome to our library with shelves full of books,

Welcome to a big playground with squishy turf to lay in,

Welcome to the beautiful sound of birds chirping and squirrels squirreling,

Welcome to laughter-filled halls and creative, colorful art spaces,

Welcome to a great school with great people,

Welcome to a community of care,

Welcome to the feeling of Latin — the feeling of a thumbs up.

Alumni

Hawks fly high when we fly together. This year, 21% of Latin’s alumni showed their true-blue love by participating in the Latin Fund. We admire and appreciate their generous support; our vibrant alumni community keeps Charlotte Latin thriving for the students who follow them.

The Collins Cup, named in honor of Dr. Kenneth Collins (1944–2024), beloved math teacher and philanthropist, is awarded each year to the class with the highest participation in the Latin Fund.

In honor of their upcoming 50th Reunion, the class of 1975 rallied to support the Latin Fund with a remarkable 75.7% participation rate.

Parents of Alumni

Our parents of alumni donate so that today’s students receive the same exceptional experience that their children did at Latin. We are grateful for this special community of parents.
