Parents of alumni,

With the graduation of the Class of 2017, our alumni community surpassed 4,000 in number. Ranging in age from 18 to 62, Hawks span the globe from Abu Dhabi to Charlotte and many points in between. Like my own children, some are communicative and then some are just plain hard to keep up with! Thank goodness for Mary Dickson Gorman ’00 who recently joined the Development Office as Alumni Relations Manager. Between the two of us, we will continue to reach out to all our alumni and parents of alumni in hopes of keeping you connected to Latin.

This fall, we are excited that two of our young alumni will be visiting campus to speak to our Upper School student body. Coming from San Francisco in early November, Richard Walker ’02 will speak to being a “math nerd” and how it led to a career in space exploration technologies. Then Joey Glaser-Reich ’07, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer who found himself in the national news last year for rescuing crew members of the Carolina Queen, will give the keynote address at the annual Veterans Day assembly on November 10. And at both occasions, I’ll be beaming with pride.

Sally Gray Smith ’82 Charlotte Latin welcomes Fredrik Akerblom as the new Director of Development to lead the school’s philanthropic efforts. Fredrik has a long history of service in education and the nonprofit sector in the areas of major gifts, fundraising, operations and project management. He joins Latin from Uppsala University in Sweden, where he was the Major Gifts Officer and Manager of Development. Prior to Uppsala University, he was a management consultant in Connecticut and Director of Operations for the fundraising office of a North American global nonprofit organization, also in Connecticut. While Fredrik is from Gothenburg, Sweden, his wife Tanja is from Asheville, and this move to Charlotte brings them close to family in North Carolina and Tennessee. THE WELLS FARGO CUP COMES HOME Over the last four years, the Class of 2017 helped the Hawks win 21 CISAA conference titles, 17 state titles, and earlier this year — for the first time since 2010-11 — a Wells Fargo Cup Championship.

The cup was presented to Charlotte Latin for the best overall interscholastic athletic program in the 3A classification.

COLLEGE MATRICULATION

The senior class (116 students) submitted 849 applications to 183 colleges from California to Scotland to France. They were admitted to 147 schools, and chose to matriculate at 61. Each senior submitted between 1 and 19 applications with an average of 7.

Thanks to the generosity of 1,631 donors, the Latin Fund raised more than $1.2 million supporting critical enhancements across our School community for the 2017-2018 year.

Many enhancements were made in preparation for the start of the school year, such as:

new family participation

• campus security cameras upgraded from analog to digital, allowing a longer review of past footage, • new Patten Stadium lights, renovated Founders’ Hall kitchen and serving area, installed energy-saving LEDs (now 100% of our lights are LEDs), repaired sewer lines and replaced several HVAC units throughout campus, • a second high element, the Giant’s Ladder, added to our Hawks Quest challenge course, and • redesigned Media Center space to create a dedicated reading and teaching area for Middle School students.

Hawks Herald Convocation FOR THE CLASS OF 2018

Ann Thompson Brock ’81, parent of Lucy ’13 and Thompson Brock, and Latin’s Director of Leadership Development, was the Class of 2018’s Convocation speaker on September 1. This ceremony, a gathering of the academic community, marked the beginning of the class’ senior year.

This class was described by Head of Upper School Lawrence Wall, as “kind, genuine and good together.” Wall went on to tout impressive statistics of this group of seniors. Of this class’ 122 members, ten seniors have been recognized as AP Scholars, three as AP Scholars with Honor, and one as an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Ann shared words of wisdom with the Class of 2018 and fellow members of the audience. Her message, Life Lessons Learned from a Rock, presented the individual then collective perspectives of a boulder, a rock, a stone and a pebble. Boulder: Stay Grounded. Rock: Try Your Hardest. Stone: Be Still. And Pebble: Find Balance. In the end, Brock used her props to create a cairn, a navigational tool, and encouraged seniors to, “Take the first step. Get lost. Seek direction. Notice the cairns guiding your path. It is sure to be an adventure.” Click to read Ann’s address in its entirety.

Latin’s speech and debate program has reached a level of competitive excellence not seen here since the early 90s. The 2016-2017 school year saw the largest number of participants in many years. Four seniors won individual state championships and seven qualified to compete in national championships, with four advancing to the elimination competition at NSDA Nationals earlier this summer. Two Hawks finished among the top 30 of the 273 teams in Public Forum Debate, falling in round 11 on a 2-1 decision. These two students are Latin’s first Public Forum team to advance to elimination competition in this format of debate in the national championships.
