A NEWSLETTER FOR THE BOARD OF VISITORS OF CHARLOTTE LATIN
Greetings Fellow Visitors: I hear that those of you who attended the dress rehearsal for this year’s Upper School musical Crazy for You thoroughly enjoyed it, and that it is a ‘must see.’ Director of Theater Arts Matt Cosper shared that “this is the biggest production Latin’s theater department has ever put together.” I hope this group continues to take advantage of the Broadway-level performances offered in Thies Auditorium, paying close attention to the magnificent artwork adorning the walls in the lobby from our talented student, faculty and alumni artists. Not only do we have access to these elite performances and artists, but our Athletics program has also finished on top in several sports this school year, adding more championships to the trophy case in the Beck Student Activities Center. Our Mat Hawks just celebrated their 6th consecutive NCISAA wrestling state title along with the boys swim team capturing their state championship title. In the fall, the football team won their NCISAA state title and the field hockey team successfully defended their title for a second straight championship. Winning means a lot to these student-athletes but behind the winning is their commitment to teamwork, their responsibility to be leaders on and off the field, and their respect for one another and their coaches. We have so much to be proud of as current and past parents and current Board of Visitors members. “To whom much is given, much is expected.” I think our students prove, time and time again, that they work hard to use their talents and to take full advantage of the opportunities offered at Charlotte Latin. I ask each of you as members of this group to please make sure you are continuing to support the School, continuing to take advantage of this fantastic community, and continuing to give of your financial resources to ensure this legacy continues. We stand at 40% participation from our Board of Visitors in the Latin Fund. I would like to make a personal request, as we look toward the close of another academic year, for you to join me in making sure that the participation number reflects how we all feel about Charlotte Latin School. In the summer edition of this newsletter, we look forward to updating you about the many academic accolades and accomplishments that are shared at graduation, as well as the landscape of college matriculation for the Class of 2017. VISION 2O2O BRINGING LATIN’S FUTURE INTO FOCUS
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE The Buildings and Grounds Committee of the board continues the planning process with the campaign architect, Little & Associates, and contractor, Choate Construction Co, while the Finance Committee and the Development Committee are at hard at work looking into the best strategy to cover both long and short term finance and fundraising needs. The campaign leadership team has secured 54% of the facilities goal from 22 board members, 24 current parents, 9 past families, and 5 faculty & staff. Vision2020 continues to balance phasing so it addresses the immediate and long term needs of our people, programs and places. We look forward to sharing plans about the phasing of the priorities and the construction timeline after the March 6 board meeting and in our next newsletter.

Molly Green ’17 is a standout student service leader at Charlotte Latin and in the community. By February of her senior year she has completed more than 570 hours of community service during her four years of high school, a number that will continue to grow in the days and months ahead. Molly’s main focus is supporting the Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC), a passion she discovered early on as a young child. Initially, Molly earned money to donate by doing chores and setting up lemonade stands. Wanting to do even more, but too young to volunteer in a shelter and too allergic to be able to adopt an animal herself, Molly graduated to organizing a dinner and silent auction under the moniker “Paws for the Cause.” Her first event, held when she was only 13 years old, raised nearly $1,500. Last summer, the fourth year of the now annual dinner and auction, she raised more than eight Last spring, the HSC honored Molly with an award for times that amount. As a junior at Charlotte Latin School, Molly created a “Paws for the Cause” student organization which focuses on raising awareness about pet ownership and care. Her teacher and club advisor, Dr. Topher Gee, calls Molly a shining example of passion and compassion. He shares, “Molly’s warmth and gentle nature foster collaboration, while her organizational skills efficiently maximize impact. What I have seen in Molly is a harbinger of a lifetime spent making a difference.”
OBSERVE & SERVE The Observe and Serve Senior Project provides members of the Senior class with an opportunity to extend learning beyond the walls of Latin into the greater community. It is a three-day, unpaid internship during which Seniors can explore a career area of interest or volunteer for a non-profit organization. The 2017 project dates are May 22-24, and the students are required to work or serve a minimum of 15 hours. This program is a wonderful opportunity to connect with current Latin students and show the strength of our greater Charlotte Latin network. 2017 ALUMNI ART SHOW The inaugural Charlotte Latin Alumni Art Show opened on January 20 with a reception attended by alumni, parents of alumni and current CLS parents. The next morning, Laura Manns ’05 and Jamey Price ’06 came back to campus to lead artists’ workshops. Featuring the artwork of 37 alumni ranging from the Class of 1979 to the Class of 2016, the show was proudly displayed in the Horne Performing Arts Center through February 27. Per CLS Visual Arts Chair Richard Fletcher ’85, the show was a perfect opportunity to “showcase the many wonderfully talented artists, both professional and amateur, who have been a part of our art department for over four decades.”

HAWKS FLYING HIGH Read about some of the recent student highlights: • A collegiate athletic signing ceremony was held on February 1, to honor ten student-athletes for their commitment to continue their sport in college. Read more. • The Varsity swim team had a fantastic showing in the CISAA Conference Championships on February 6: the boys’ winning first place by more than 100 points and the girls’ team finishing fourth overall. Varsity Mat Hawks took home their sixth State Championship title. Varisty girls’ basketball junior Claudia Dickey was named to the All-State Team.
The Middle School presented Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, Jr., in February.
• Middle School sports wrap up an impressive season! The Mat Hawks had a near-perfect season and capped it off with the conference championship. Eighth grade boys’ basketball made it to the championship game, but fell shy of the conference title. Middle School Swim Hawks set five championship records on their way to a first place finish for the boys’ team and a second place finish for the girls! • Charlotte Latin students won 80 regional art awards and 44 regional writing awards in the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards including Gold, Silver, Honorable Mention and Special Awards. Don’t miss the artistic talents of our students; view the Latin Arts calendar. • Congratulations to Michael Yang ’17 who has been selected as a finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Michael is among 40 scholars (chosen from more than 1,700 applicants) selected based on the scientific rigor and world-changing potential of their research projects.
