Karen McQuaid

Latin teacher in Middle and Upper School, Junior Classical League sponsor, Honor Council member

Family

Husband Tom, mother Charlotte, brother Ken.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of school?

Caring for my mom, reading, good times with friends.

What is your favorite family vacation? Summers in Maine.

What is your favorite kind of food? Italian.

Describe your favorite Charlotte Latin memory.

One of many: Latin students sometimes struggle to remember that the third principal part of the verb SUM is FUI. When I called on a student to give me that third part, I couldn’t understand her response and asked her to spell her answer. She looked at me and slowly said, “F-U-” and paused before turning three shades of purple and apologizing profusely while we both tried not to laugh.

What is something we might not know about you?

I worked in a mall at a Baskin-Robbins all through high school, wearing a neon pink and orange striped shirt and a brown baseball cap. A scoop of ice cream was 42 cents, which we rang up on an old mechanical cash register because the owner didn’t want to pay for a modern one.

What do you love most about Latin?

Being surrounded by such dedicated, talented, and caring people.

35 YEARS Mike Weiss

Upper School History Teacher, Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach, Boys and Girls

Distance Coach, Varsity Track

Family Patti Weiss (spouse)

What are your hobbies/interests outside of school?

Cycling, running, kayaking and paddle-boarding, reading

What is your favorite family vacation? Bike touring

What is your favorite kind of food? Pizza

Describe your favorite Charlotte Latin memory. There are too many great memories to single out any one in particular. Perhaps it starts with the fact that our students are so kind and polite that they thank me every day at the end of class. I also treasure the countless moments when a student or an athlete achieves something they once regarded as impossible. I’ve been lucky to witness thousands of those moments.

What is something we might not know about you?

I am obsessed with movies and TV shows about organized crime.

What do you love most about Latin?

Its community atmosphere of caring, gratitude, mutual respect, and love.

35 YEARS

Lin Hansbrough

Assistant Teacher

Family To my husband John and my son Jay. I love you. I miss you. You are with me always.Granddaughter Scarlett. My greatest joy!

What are your hobbies/interests outside of school?

Hanging with my friends at the beach, meeting my exercise group at the Y and listening to Audible books.

What is your favorite family vacation? London

What is your favorite kind of food? Fruits, veggies, baked potatoes and a tall glass of sweet iced tea.

Describe your favorite Charlotte Latin memory. It’s hard to find a new memory after 35 years and seven service recognitions. A conference in Las Vegas with the Kindergarten team stands out. One of our team members is terrified of riding elevators. It was impossible to go anywhere in the hotel without riding on an elevator. I was her elevator companion. Each ride the two of us would get on the elevator and she would jump off so I would jump off before the doors would close. It would take several tries before we could get anywhere. Finally, it was strongly suggested we had to stay on the elevator in order to attend the conference. It was comical after the fact. I promised to never reveal that information to anyone. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

What is something we might not know about you? I was an avid runner in my 20’s and 30’s. Running was a great adventure for me. My first 10K in 1976, I was the last person to go over the finish line. Years later my running group would make the front page of a local newspaper. My favorite race was the Peachtree in Atlanta. I was running with 25K people all with the same goal. It was a rush like no other experience. It was never about winning but it was about the journey and the fellowship along the way.

What do you love most about Latin? Latin is a magical place where everyone knows your name. Where your colleagues are lifelong friends and students come back to see you after they graduate with wonderful stories of success.

One unforgettable chapter? The time when the Business Office and Philanthropy team were relocated to the “MU” (modular unit, but felt more like sorority house) on south campus. Imagine 14 of us crammed into less than 1000 square feet.

Paul DuPont biked to work daily and used the supply closet as his personal dressing room. I stopped counting how many times someone walked in on him mid-wardrobe change—at some point, we just accepted it as part of the office culture. Despite the chaos, those days were some of the best. Who knew squeezing in like sardines would create such unforgettable memories?

Describe your favorite Charlotte Latin memory. One of my favorite memories at Latin is starting the “camp names” tradition. I was nervous it wouldn’t stick—but it did, in the best way possible! I’ll never forget the pure joy on our counselors’ faces when they were called by their camp names outside of camp. It always makes me smile to hear, “Hey, Pippi!” and get to respond with, “Hey, Cinderella!” There’s something truly magical about camp—it lives on through those special names, beyond summer, and even after each season.

What is something we might not know about you? Every year, I fill my home with five live Christmas trees. Our love for Christmas runs so deep that we’re now in the process of starting a Christmas tree hobby farm, gearing up for our first plantings — cue the costumes!

It’s also the best to have a career where I get to be silly, create fun for kids, and work with students as they experience their first job, teaching them valuable skills along the way—truly my favorite! I love our beautiful campus, especially those peaceful summer mornings before the day’s excitement begins.

Describe your favorite Charlotte Latin memory. It may not be my favorite memory, but it is certainly the funniest. I went to talk to Chuck about something, and as soon as I walked into his office, I got a serious leg cramp. So I’m hopping around because I can’t sit, bent over looking at the floor as I try to stretch out my leg. At the same time, I’m trying to talk while making moaning sounds due to the painful spasms. Hopping around, stretching, and moaning is not a good look when you are trying to have a serious conversation with the Head of School. I can only imagine what his secretary must have thought as she heard my utterances.

What is something we might not know about you? I love all things connected to aviation. My lifetime aviation goals were to take flight classes which I did in high school; go up in an air traffic control tower and listen to pilot/controller exchanges which I’ve done multiple times because my son-in-law is a controller; and go into an actual flight simulator which I did in a 737 United Airlines training simulator for a couple of hours in Denver. My final goal which I have been trying to figure out how to do is I want to get into one of those luggage buckets and ride the conveyor belt underneath an airport and see what happens to our luggage. Whenever I see one of the buckets go by while I’m checking in, I am so tempted to jump in.

What do you love most about Latin? I love the people... the adults and the kids. I appreciate the relationships I’ve built.
