Meet the Roughton Family

Wanting to hold true to their aspirations, Dylan and Katie married a month after his hospital release. Dylan has since found a job at Storm Smart, where he is advancing and learning more daily. In November, 2018, Dylan and Katie were blessed with the arrival of their son, Sebastian. Becoming Habitat homeowners will allow both Dylan and Katie to achieve their dream of owning an affordable home to raise their children even if for some future reason Dylan’s injuries require him to stay home while Katie returns to work. Dylan and Katie were accepted in the Habitat homeownership program in June, 2019, have completed all their program requirements, and are very excited that their home is under construction. Charlotte County Habitat works diligently to help families in need of affordable homeownership. Currently, we have 24 approved families waiting for their homes to be built. Audrey Hepburn said, “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands - one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” Will you please consider making a year-end contribution? Your gift will offer a “hand up, not a hand out” to families like the Roughtons so children like Krystopher and Sebastian can grow up in safe, affordable homes and have the opportunity to thrive. God bless you, Gabrielle Reineck Senior Director of Outreach Dylan, who was raised by a single, hardworking mother and often had to fend for himself, moved annually to different homes and schools, lacking stability in his life. At a young age he decided he wanted to be married to the mother of his children, have a reliable job and be a homeowner. Katie, who lived with her single mother and grandparents, was blessed to have a stable roof over her head and a nurturing family but wanted to raise her family differently. Dylan and Katie, who was seven months pregnant, wanted a fresh start and moved to Florida with Katie’s family, who offered to help them get on their feet. Within one week, Dylan secured a good job at PGT. Dylan and Katie found themselves on the right track, joined a local church and quickly made friends. Dylan and Katie saved to replace their old clunker vehicle, and two weeks later Krystopher arrived. In January, 2017, Dylan decided to visit his family in North Carolina. Katie assumed he was resting after driving all night, but she soon learned Dylan had been hit by a drunk driver and was hospitalized in Jacksonville, FL. She was instructed to come immediately because of Dylan’s critical condition. With her world turned upside down, Katie prayed the entire way. Dylan underwent two surgeries placing metal plates in his pelvis, his left femur and knee, and his right foot and ankle. He spent a month in the hospital before returning home to start his long healing process.
