Message from the Head of School

T

THE 2025–26 SCHOOL YEAR, chronicled in this issue of Perspectives, was one of meaningful progress, joy, and inspiration in our classrooms, on our fields and stages, and throughout our broader community. It was also a year that showed me, in my first year as Head of School, just how extraordinary this community is. Country Day is a place where people show up with a full heart—for our students, for one another, and for the shared work of educating young people. My family and I felt that spirit from the moment we arrived. Thank you for welcoming us so generously into this community. I am deeply grateful for your trust and your partnership. I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together. This issue celebrates so much worth recognizing. We saw record-breaking scholarship offers for the Class of 2026 and an all-time high watermark for the Country Day Fund. The beautiful Margaret Gragg Bissell Reading Garden at the heart of Cannon Campus was expanded, and we honored our legendary, long-serving Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Nancy Ehringhaus, among many other achievements. These moments reflect the talent, generosity, and dedication that have always defined Country Day. Perspectives is also an invitation to look forward and to imagine what is possible when a strong community comes together with shared purpose and ambition. On the following page, we share the guideposts of our Bold & Visionary Plan, which will shape institutional decision-making and community impact over the next five to ten years. Rooted in our Mission, Key Values, and Affirmation of Community, this plan is both an affirmation of who we are and a clear declaration of where we are going. It calls us to build on Country Day’s considerable strengths while challenging ourselves to become even more intentional, aligned, and ambitious in the education we provide and the experience we create for every student. We envision a Country Day where every student is known, challenged, and supported by best-in-class educators; where high achievement and well-being are not competing priorities, but partners in healthy striving; where every member of our community experiences the belonging and respect at the heart of our Affirmation of Community; and our graduates leave us prepared not simply to succeed, but to lead lives of purpose, integrity, and contribution. In short, we are committed to developing strong minds and good humans. What gives me the greatest confidence in this vision is the fact that the future we envision is already taking shape. Throughout this issue, you will see Country Day faculty and staff bringing these aspirations to life through service-learning grounded in reciprocity, reflection, and meaningful community impact (page 28); through a coherent and rigorous JK–12 curriculum that integrates experiential and interdisciplinary learning (page 34); and through a “winning from within” culture that challenges our student-athletes to pursue excellence while caring for their whole selves (page 37). And bold aspirations require exceptional people to bring them to life. This past year, seven talented leaders joined Country Day’s Leadership Team: • Eric Brunt, Director of Enrollment Management • Dave Nelson, Executive Assistant to the Head of School • Danielle Scott, Director of Health & Wellness • Allison Tate, Director of College Counseling

• Jeremy Moore, Assistant Head of School • Michael Rinehart, Head of Middle School • Brian Sossamon, Chief Information Officer

Dr. Kinsey chats with a third grader at the Kids in Business marketplace, an annual event that gives students the opportunity to hone their communication, creativity, and problemsolving skills while gaining a hands-on introduction to foundational economic concepts.

This formidable group brings extraordinary expertise, experience, and energy to our school. They are missionaligned leaders, trusted advisors, institution builders, and culture shapers who will help us turn aspiration into action. Alongside our remarkable veteran leaders, our exceptional faculty and staff, and our deeply committed Board of Trustees, they strengthen our capacity to lead with both confidence and imagination. As I begin my second year as your Head of School, I am filled with gratitude for what this community has accomplished, and with tremendous optimism about what lies ahead. We have inherited something extraordinary, and we have an exciting opportunity to build upon it. The work ahead will require courage, creativity, discipline, and partnership. Most of all, it will require us to keep believing in what is possible for our students and for one another. Over the past year, so many of you have shared with me your excitement and enthusiasm for Country Day’s future. And with good reason. We know who we are. We know where we are going. And we have the people, purpose, and passion to get there. The future is bright. Bucs for Life, Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey Head of School FALL 2026

Learning Beyond the Classroom Through the

SENIOR EXTERNSHIP

F

FOR COUNTRY DAY SENIORS, the Senior Externship Program is more than a day away from campus—it’s an opportunity to step into professional spaces, ask real questions, and see how passions, purpose, and possibility intersect beyond the classroom. Each year, seniors are matched with community professionals across a wide range of industries, from medicine, finance, and design to entrepreneurship, engineering, and technology. Students gain exposure, career perspective, and insight into the many paths that can lead to fulfilling work they had no idea about. “The Senior Externship Program helps students bridge the gap between school and the wider world—building confidence, curiosity, and clarity as they prepare for college and beyond,” said Natalie Hutchinson, dean of students and externship coordinator. “Just as importantly, it strengthens the ties between Country Day and the broader community, reminding students that meaningful learning happens everywhere.” Launched in 2017, the Senior Externship Program has partnered with more than 175 local employers across 20+ industries. Many hosts are Country Day parents, alumni, and friends who generously share their time, expertise, and professional insight. Here’s a look at just a few experiences.

EMMA GRACE HEFNER ’26 | Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Emma Grace’s externship experience was deeply personal— and profoundly impactful. Born at 29 weeks and weighing just 1 pound, 12 ounces, Emma Grace spent the first three months of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Through the Senior Externship Program, she had the extraordinary opportunity to return to the very unit where her life began, shadowing

Dr. Matthew Saxonhouse—a former Country Day parent— and the nurses who care for the hospital’s smallest and most vulnerable patients. “It was a full-circle moment,” Emma Grace said, noting that some of the doctors working that day had cared for her as a newborn. Throughout the externship, Emma Grace attended a physician planning meeting, spent the day alongside nurses and doctors in the NICU, observed a high-risk delivery, and gained a firsthand look at the compassion, teamwork, and expertise required in neonatal care. Seeing premature babies who weighed nearly the same as she once did was especially meaningful and solidified her passion for nursing. Inspired by the experience, Emma Grace plans to become a NICU nurse herself—supporting premature babies and families during some of their most critical moments. “This hands-on experience is something you can’t learn in a classroom,” Emma Grace said. “It opened my eyes to the incredible impact healthcare professionals have, not just on patients, but on entire families. I’m grateful for the Senior Externship, and I’m excited to start my own nursing journey.” “It is amazing how Emma Grace was here 18 years ago,” said Dr. Saxonhouse. “A few of the staff members and nurses remembered her! We truly hope she fulfills her goals of

becoming a NICU nurse, as we would love to have her here!”

EVELYN TURNER ’26 | Unlock Labs Evelyn’s time at Unlock Labs was fastpaced, highly collaborative, and rooted in real-world problem-solving. During an Innovation Day focused on entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and AI, students worked in teams to identify challenges, develop startup concepts, and build functional prototypes—all in a matter of hours. Evelyn’s team created Carpal, a carpooling app designed specifically for teens, addressing safety, accessibility, and traffic concerns within the Charlotte community. “What stood out to me most was learning how much goes into building a product beyond just having a good idea,” Evelyn said. Guided by mentors and hands-on experimentation, she explored the complexities of trust, privacy, safety, logistics, and long-term sustainability. “This experience allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship and showed me how creativity, technology, and collaboration can come together to solve real-world problems in amazing ways,” Evelyn said.

the skills, responsibilities, and opportunities available in engineering, along with valuable insight that will help shape his future academic and career decisions. “The technical center showed me what an engineering job is really like and provided great insight into what a future in engineering could look like,” William said. “I got much more context, I learned what kind of jobs I could

get, what the work would entail, and most importantly, it was an authentic experience.”

HARPER WHITE ’26 | Anne Pearson Design For Harper, the externship provided clarity about how her creativity could translate into a long-term career. Shadowing Anne Pearson Hammett of Anne Pearson Design, Harper spent the day selecting materials, visiting project sites, and exploring showrooms. “Before this experience, I didn’t realize how many details go into designing a home. Seeing how paint, fabric, tile, and furniture all work together was one of my favorite parts of the day,” said Harper. Beyond aesthetics, Harper gained insight into budgeting, project management, and client needs—learning how creativity and structure work hand in hand. “This experience gave me a better understanding of how creativity and organization work together for this job, and I am excited to pursue a career in interior design in the future.”

William Haggart ’26, Luke Welcome ’26, Ben Dorsey ’26, and Raker Goodman ’26.

WILLIAM HAGGART ’26 | Hendrick Motorsports William got a behind-the-scenes look at what a future in engineering could look like in a real-world setting. During his visit to Hendrick Motorsports, William toured multiple facilities involved in building and maintaining race cars—from assembly and carbon-fiber fabrication to engine construction and testing. During a tour of the technical center, he spoke directly with engineers about their roles, career paths, and the collaboration required to keep elite racing teams competitive. By the end of the day, William gained a clearer picture of FALL 2026

Inside Kids in

BUSINESS

A

AS PART OF A hands-on introduction to economic principles, third graders brought their ideas to life through the annual “Kids in Business” marketplace in March. Students created and sold products such as candles, soaps, soccer goals, and organizational tools, each one developed through their own process of brainstorming, designing, producing, and presenting. Throughout the event, students practiced communication, creativity, and problem-solving while gaining a hands-on introduction to foundational economic concepts. For the first time, the event was held in the Harris Gym, bringing all third-grade classes together in one shared space. The new setting allowed students to experience one another’s projects more fully, while giving parents, grandparents, siblings, and teachers the opportunity to easily explore and support a wide range of student-run businesses. The hard work paid off when the students’ wares sold out and they counted their profits, with 10 percent donated to Promising Pages (see page 31). “Kids in Business” continues to be a meaningful tradition that highlights student creativity and builds confidence for our third graders.

BEHIND THE SCENES: What it Takes to Bring a Middle School Production to Life on Stage

B

BRINGING A MIDDLE SCHOOL musical to life is a process built on time, collaboration, and creativity. This spring’s production of James and the Giant Peach Jr. began with casting in January and included more than 40 rehearsals focused on music, choreography, and staging. An additional series of technical and dress rehearsals introduced lighting, costumes, props, and sound, transforming weeks of preparation into a full performance. In total, 32 students contributed to the production as part of both the cast and crew, working together to create something meaningful. “Having students from all sorts of backgrounds come together and create something and then present it live allows

them to establish lifelong friendships and connections,” said Drama Teacher Aaron Mize, who is in his eleventh year at the Middle School and has led more than 20 productions. “And live performance allows students to experience and persevere through the pressure and anxiety that naturally happens.”

Country Day has a long-standing tradition of student performance in the arts, giving students opportunities to take the stage and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. The collaborative process helps students to build confidence, navigate pressure, and develop their social-emotional skills. FALL 2026

IMPACT Report

MESSAGE

from Stanton McCullough, Chair of the Board of Trustees

L

ast year was an important one for our school. We welcomed Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey as our new Head of School, the 13th in our 85-year history. I am pleased to report that her headship is off to a very strong start. As the Board anticipated, Dr. Kinsey brought tremendous energy, insight, and impact as she set to work on her first-year goals, all designed to build on Country Day’s many strengths and push our great school to even greater heights. From her earliest days on campus, Dr. Kinsey established herself as a visible, authentic, and deeply committed leader, building trust in her leadership and in the institution more broadly in numerous ways. In January, the Board reviewed her preliminary observations about Country Day’s strengths and opportunities for growth. This strategic analysis was informed by her and the Leadership Team’s years of experience as educational leaders, hundreds of conversations she held with members of our community, countless school events and experiences, and conversations with other educational thought leaders across the country. Our strategic work continued throughout the spring and in May the Board of Trustees unanimously and enthusiastically approved the Bold & Visionary Plan to chart the course for Country Day over the next five to ten years. We are excited by the possibilities ahead as we lean into four strategic pillars— Lifelong Community, Excellence in Education, Responsibility to Serve, and Healthy Striving. You can expect to hear more about how we will bring these pillars to life in the coming months. A related priority for the Board this year is to work with the Leadership Team to develop an updated master plan for our campuses. One of the Board’s most

14 PERSPECTIVES

important responsibilities is to ensure that Country Day is thriving not just today, but for generations to come. An essential part of that work is planning thoughtfully for the facilities and resources our students, faculty, and programs will need in the years ahead.

We continue to benefit from both a strong admissions pipeline and family satisfaction—with an incredible 98 percent five-year reenrollment rate. Our ability to achieve these long-term goals is grounded in our strength as a school—from our long history of offering an excellent educational experience and our reputation as a committed and caring community to our robust philanthropy and

sound fiscal management. We continue to benefit from both a strong admissions pipeline and family satisfaction—with an incredible 98 percent five-year reenrollment rate. The Country Day Fund is another tangible measure of the trust our families place in the educators and leaders who make this school exceptional. For the first time, annual giving crossed the $3 million mark, providing approximately 5 percent of the school’s annual budget. I am grateful to everyone who makes the school a philanthropic priority. Your generosity enhances the experience of our students each and every year and will be a key enabler of our strategic priorities ahead. Together, we are fueling an inspiring future for our students. The familiar proverb “it takes a village” feels especially true at Country Day. This institution depends on the talent, commitment, and generosity of many people, and our Board of Trustees is no exception. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Sam Farnham, Shanon Jones, Tiffani Jones, and my predecessor Bill Zimmern ’95, who completed their Board service at the end of the 2025–26 school year. I welcome the service of incoming trustees Brianna McRae and Stephen Philipson and am grateful for their willingness to serve. The year ahead, built on the success of the past, promises continued momentum and exciting progress. Grounded in our Mission, Key Values, and Affirmation of Community, and strengthened by the extraordinary people who make Country Day the exceptional school that it is, we are poised for a bold and visionary future.

Sincerely,

Stanton McCullough Chair, Board of Trustees

DEIB Report

Message from Brian Wise, Director of Diversity Planning

T

his has been a connected year for DEIB at Country Day. Through the continued support of our Board of Trustees, senior leadership, and our community, we have deepened our commitment to building a school where every student feels known, valued, and affirmed. That partnership across every level of our community is what makes this work meaningful and sustainable. One program that exemplifies this commitment is our Diversity Guest Author Series. Launched in 2006, the series brings award-winning writers and literary voices to students from Country Day and schools across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community—both public and independent—with the belief that great literature builds empathy, expands perspective, and fosters belonging. To date, the series has benefitted over 8,000 CharlotteMecklenburg middle and high school students. This year, we were proud to host two distinguished guest author events. In October, award-winning author and illustrator duo Lesa Cline-Ransome and James Ransome visited our campuses for a full day of engagement, joining Middle and Lower School assemblies, visiting classrooms, and connecting with affinity groups. Their visit brought history, artistry, and storytelling into direct conversation with our students in a way that extended well beyond a single event.

Their energy and insight sparked excitement for reading, writing, and art, while encouraging students to reflect and make connections to history,” says Kasey Short, assistant head of Middle School, who also coordinated the event. “Their talent and expertise connected with students across divisions and inspired a sense of community and belonging.”

We also welcomed Jessica Whipple, whose work centers the experience of neurodiverse learners. Her visit drew an extraordinary response from the broader community: four CMS schools, Charlotte Prep, two homeschool cohorts, and six additional CMS schools participating online—more than 700 students in all. That level of regional engagement is a testament to the power of this program and to Country Day’s role as a convener for meaningful conversations across Charlotte. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who make this work possible. These efforts affirm our belief that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are essential to individual achievement and academic excellence—and that the most lasting impact happens when a whole community commits to the journey together. PARENT SUPPORT GROUP Report

Bucs Show Up

T

here’s a particular kind of energy that defines a Country Day parent. You see it in the volunteer who’s been opening carpool doors in the rain, in the parent arranging dishes of homemade jollof rice for the International Food Hall, in the family cheering from the bleachers at a friend’s basketball game. It’s not obligatory. It’s not performative. It’s just what Bucs do.

18 PERSPECTIVES

IMPACT Report

This year, that energy showed up across all our parent support groups, and in thousands of individual moments that added up to something remarkable. The Parents’ Association anchored the year with the events Country Day families count on: Run for Good, the All-School Celebration & Auction, and the Car Raffle. More than 700 volunteers gave their time. When the giving was tallied, the PA had directed $375,914 back into the school—funding everything from the Parent Speaker Series to faculty professional development to classroom enhancements. Notably, $56,000 went directly to faculty and staff hospitality, because caring for this community means caring for the people who show up for students every day. Friends of the Arts wove themselves quietly into the fabric of every production, exhibition, and concert—sewing costumes, hanging gallery walls, and organizing a Pop-Up Art Sale that raised nearly $44,000 for the arts programs. And they hosted the 20th annual Create to Donate Pottery event. The International Parents Group made sure that what makes Country Day global was also what made it feel like home. Families from more than 20 countries filled the International Food

Hall at Big Saturday, and around 80 community members gathered for the annual Fall Dinner to celebrate cultural diversity. The Boosters Club showed up at tailgates, at the golf tournament, and at the concession stand every season. They put spirit wear on faculty and staff. They brought Upper School athletes into Lower School classrooms and Little Bucs onto the sidelines. Year after year, the Boosters generate nearly $100,000 in support for athletics—not as a line item, but as a statement about what this school believes extracurricular life is worth.

And POCIS—the community that insists, simply and firmly, that everyone belongs here—had its biggest year yet. Attendance at every event reached an all-time high. Game nights and football tailgates. A Buccaneers’ Choice Dance that raised money for the Mark E. Reed Scholarship. A gathering at the Head of School’s home, where new relationships took root. POCIS doesn’t just strengthen the community. It defines what community is supposed to mean. Country Day parents also showed up in the way that sustains everything else. The Country Day Fund raised more than $3 million this year, powered by more than 1,800 donors and 150 parent volunteers, generating five percent of the school’s entire annual operating budget. The numbers are significant. But the number that matters most is harder to count: the 1,745 students who felt it—in the crowded gym, the full auditorium, the sideline that never empties—knowing that the people who love them most also love this place. And the over 400 faculty and staff who felt seen and appreciated, who walked into another year knowing this community had their backs.

Bucs for Life.

STRENGTHENING OUR SCHOOL for Generations to Come Message from Katharine Atkins, Director of Advancement

O

ne of the defining strengths of Charlotte Country Day School is the extraordinary dedication of our faculty and staff. Their commitment to our students and Mission shapes the experience of every child, every day. Through a strong culture of philanthropy, our community invests in these remarkable educators through the Country Day Fund, which provides vital support for the school’s ongoing needs. From time to time, donors also come together to support special initiatives that strengthen our institution for generations to come. This past year was particularly meaningful as we celebrated four beloved and longstanding members of the Country Day community, whose legacies have left an enduring mark on our school. We were honored to establish the Nancy Ehringhaus Endowed Scholarship Fund, recognizing Nancy’s extraordinary 43-year career at Country Day and her profound impact on countless students and families. This financial aid-based scholarship will ensure that future generations of students have access to the transformative educational experience she championed. We also celebrated the creation of the Bob and Donna Witman Athletics Endowment, one of the first endowed funds dedicated exclusively to Country Day athletics. This visionary investment will provide lasting support for our comprehensive athletics program and help sustain opportunities for student-athletes and coaches for years to come. It is fitting to honor both Bob and Donna together as they have collectively served our community for 72 years. As highlighted on pages 26 and 27, we were proud to enhance and rededicate the garden honoring Head of School Emeritus Margaret Gragg Bissell. The renewed space celebrates

20 PERSPECTIVES

A school is only as strong as its people, and we are fortunate to be part of a community that believes deeply in supporting one another.

Margaret’s enduring contributions to our school and serves as a living reminder of the values expressed in our Affirmation of Community, which she so thoughtfully authored in 2007. A school is only as strong as its people, and we are fortunate to be part of a community that believes deeply in supporting one another. We are profoundly grateful to the 2,000+ donors who participated in last year’s Country Day Fund, as well as the many families and friends who contributed to these special initiatives, honoring true Country Day legends. Together, your generosity strengthens our mission, enriches the student experience, and positions Country Day for continued success as we begin our 85th school year. Thank you for believing in our school, investing in our people, and helping ensure a vibrant future for Country Day. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and support. As always, it is an honor and a joy to support this work, and on behalf of the entire advancement team, we thank you.

Sincerely,

Katharine Atkins Director of Advancement

Renewing Margaret’s Garden with Community at Its Heart By Katharine Atkins, Director of Advancement

A

long with our Mission and Key Values, our Affirmation of Community is framed and hanging in every Country Day classroom and office, serving as a daily reminder of our school’s shared values, commitments, and aspirations. Written by Head of School Emeritus Margaret Gragg Bissell during her remarkable 33 years of service to the school, the Affirmation of Community has guided generations of students, faculty, and families. Its message of belonging, reflection, and growth continues to shape school culture. When Margaret retired in 2009, the school dedicated a reading garden

outside the Hance Fine Arts Center in her honor. For many years, the quiet garden offered students and faculty a peaceful retreat amid the energy of the Upper School campus. Recently, the Margaret Gragg Bissell Reading Garden was reimagined through a partnership with the school, and generosity and support from the Bissell Ballantyne Legacy Foundation. We were fortunate to work with longtime school architect, friend, and Honorary Alumnus Aubrey Springer, and landscape architect Laurel Holtzapple of Groundworks Studio who thoughtfully and meticulously designed an updated space with Margaret and the Affirmation of Community as its focus.

The redesigned space now stands as a more visible and welcoming feature of Cannon Campus, honoring both Margaret’s enduring legacy and the values expressed in the Affirmation of Community.

Every element of the garden was intentionally designed to reflect Margaret’s life, character, and impact on Country Day. Former Board Chair Todd Gorelick ’87 once described Margaret as “a writing artist,” a phrase that inspired much of the garden’s design. The project also centered around one particular line from the Affirmation of Community: “Awareness that living in a community and embracing diversity are an active process, a continual journey which engages us in personal and institutional self-assessment, reflection, and openness to growth and change.” As such, that idea of journey became the heart of the garden itself. A winding pathway guides visitors

through the space, symbolizing growth, reflection, and discovery. A meandering stone wall evokes both winding mountain roads and unfolding stories, while sculptural benches, created by artist Shaun Cassidy, tell their own story of community and learning. The benches rest upon bases shaped like books, representing education, shared experiences, and continual development. At the garden’s entrance, one bench takes on special meaning: designed in the shape of an oak leaf, it sits beside a large stone symbolizing the acorn from the school crest. Resting atop the stone is a bronze book engraved with the guiding principle from the Affirmation of Community. In partnership with Aubrey and Laurel, Shaun envisioned the benches as representing the school, the acorn as the student, and the book as Margaret herself—a lasting source of wisdom and guidance. As visitors continue through the garden, they encounter a Harkness-style outdoor classroom designed to encourage collaborative learning and meaningful conversation. Native plantings, boulders inspired by the North Carolina mountains where Margaret grew up, and bronze kittens preserved from the original garden connect the new design to both nature and memory. Beneath the existing elm tree lies a habitat garden filled with native flowering plants that provide refuge for wildlife and opportunities for quiet observation. Nearby, the original dedication boulder and bronze sculptures of two children reading books remain as enduring

On behalf of our family and the Bissell Ballantyne Legacy Foundation, we are overjoyed to see Margaret’s garden brought to life so beautifully. It stands as a living tribute to everything she gave to Country Day and to the generosity, kindness, and love she inspires in all of us. -- Barbara Bissell Kopczynski

A RESPONSIBILITY TO

SERVE By Lee-Anne Black, editor

A commitment to service is written in our Mission and Key Values: As a school “We empower our students to address social, environmental, and global issues and to realize the obligation and value in giving of themselves for the public good.” According to research from the National Institutes of Health, community service offers significant mental health benefits for children. Helping others fosters a sense of purpose and social connection that is associated with a reduction in anxiety and behavioral problems and a higher likelihood of being in excellent or very good health. Service endeavors are most impactful when they are grounded in reciprocity, reflection, respect, and empathy. For instance, Country Day’s longstanding tradition of hosting the Mecklenburg County Special Olympics Spring Games is one way students practice “giving of themselves for the public good.” A defining Upper School experience, students fully engage with the Special Olympics athletes, celebrating every finish line, and gaining a new appreciation for inclusion, acceptance, and genuine connection. In the pages ahead, we focus on programs and students that fully exemplify why our school prioritizes a “responsibility to serve.”

Lower School Students Give Others the Chance to Read

lease raise your hand if you have 25 books at your house.” “Do you have 50 books? More than 100 books?” When third graders in Stacy Lynch and Jeanna Prevette’s class ask these questions of their first-grade buddies, they see a classroom full of raised hands. But not all children in Charlotte have the benefit of shelves full of books to read. In fact, according to the non-profit Promising Pages, research shows that in low-income neighborhoods, there is only one ageappropriate book for every 300 children. Since 2018, Country Day students have collected nearly 25,000 new and gently used books for Promising Pages to put into the hands of children all

over our city. As Promising Pages, which serves more than 55,000 children in our region, states on its website, “By giving children the chance to choose, own, and love books, we’re building home libraries, closing the literacy gap, and opening doors to opportunity.”

Teaching empathy Mrs. Prevette plans the book drive with help from teachers Kathy Thomas and Linda Love, who serve on the Lower School’s Service Learning Advisory Board (SLAB). First, as part of their morning meeting, all Lower School students watch a video about book deserts, and they talk about the connection between access to books

and literacy. Then third- and fourthgrade classes take on a leadership role by visiting with their younger buddy classes to explain the schoolwide book drive and make bookmarks together. “Partnering with Promising Pages is a very age-appropriate service-learning endeavor for the Lower School,” says Mrs. Prevette, who serves on SLAB. “Our students love books and they have always been surrounded by books at home and at school. So, it’s easy for them to feel empathy for children who don’t have that same access. Through our work with Promising Pages, they understand that even as a child they can help others and make a difference.” Eric Law ’76, who served as executive director of Promising Pages for many years before retiring this year, has also been instrumental in building community through this service endeavor (see story on page 56 about Eric’s recognition as this year’s recipient of the Frank Dowd IV ’74 Alumni Service Award.) Since 2023, Promising Pages has been the recipient of all proceeds from the annual Lower School Bingo Night, with Eric coming to campus to talk to students, as well as playing the role of caller in some years. Held after school, Bingo Night is just for third- and fourth-grade students and their teachers. The students are asked to use their own money—often earned through chores at home—to pay for their bingo cards and snacks. Students typically raise more than $2,000 per year! And this year, each third grader donated 10 percent of their profits from Kids in Business ($296). Since 2023, third and fourth graders have raised $9,151 to help purchase books for underserved communities. Building community through service makes events like this truly special!

We Are Charlotte, We Are Country Day

I

n early May, the fifth-grade teaching team surprised their students with a Community Service Day that featured multiple hands-on stations to support the needs of six Charlottebased nonprofit organizations. It was a fitting way for students to connect back to their interdisciplinary project called “We are Charlotte” earlier in the year. For the past several years in December, fifth-grade teachers from varying disciplines pair up to lead students through a weeklong project focused on gaining a better understanding, and then problem-solving, around issues that face our city, including transportation, education, public art, environment, tourism, multicultural, parks and greenways, and health and wellness.

“The We are Charlotte project inspired us to create a dedicated service day,” explains Ada Carlevatti, art teacher and fifth-grade coordinator. “We want students to think beyond themselves and to recognize they have the power to make the world better.” “Our responsibility as a school is to give kids these kinds of opportunities,” adds McKensy Phillips, PE teacher and Middle School service coordinator. “Service learning gives students time and space to think outside of themselves, to think critically and problem solve, to work together and explore empathy—skills that we want students to have before leaving Middle School.” “Having McKensy as a resource has been amazing,” says Mrs. Carlevatti.

“We talked through ideas and shared what we wanted to accomplish as a grade, then she did the legwork of reaching out to the organizations and asking what they would want or need from us. Having someone dedicated to the behind-the-scenes logistics allowed fifth-grade teachers and parent volunteers to execute the day flawlessly for our students.”

Making a positive impact During the service day, students rotated through three stations, where they heard an explanation of why they were doing the project, who would be impacted, and how it relates to the greater community. The students: • Made trail mix bags for Hospitality House; • Made sandwiches and decorated lunch bags with inspirational messages for Roof Above; • Painted colorful flowers for Southminster; • Cleaned and wrapped books for the Nest Academy;

• Made colorful paper chains for Levine Childen’s Hospital; • Created flashcards for Classroom Central; and • Heard a presentation about Trips for Kids, which upcycles bikes. The day also included a reflective

exercise in advisory for the students to think about how they can make a difference in their community in simple, realistic ways. As the school continues to lean into its responsibility to serve, Mrs. Phillips plans to develop more service learning opportunities for Middle School.

Club, which tutors patients at Levine Children’s Hospital; and supported the homeless population, and special needs athletes with Special Olympics and RyzAbove through her passion for running. Her advisor, English teacher Becca Stern, says: “Alex is the type of person who makes excellence look effortless and compassion feel natural. Her brilliance is matched by her kindness, and she has the uncanny ability to lift everyone

lucky enough to be around her. Alex brings empathy to everything she does and shines light everywhere she enters.” We asked Alex to share more about her passion for serving others. Here’s what she said.

Which service endeavors have been the most meaningful to you? This is a really hard question because I’ve genuinely found value in every opportunity that I’ve been fortunate to take part in. Working with Special Olympics track and field athletes on Saturdays, especially as a freshman when I was still learning what service is and what it means to me, has been incredibly meaningful. As a cross country and track distance runner, helping other athletes push themselves and reach their goals taught me the importance of connecting my service with the things I love and care about. I think this is the coolest part about service: We can all find ways to channel our passions to create good for others. Working with these athletes has also helped me grow. When I started, I remember thinking that I should “let” the athletes win when we raced and trained at practice. However, I remember racing an athlete named Sally and after getting totally smoked in the race, my mindset really shifted. After that race, I considered how I’d never want a training partner or fellow competitor to go easy on me, and the same is true for these athletes. Overall, I am now far more conscious to avoid placing limitations and preconceived ideas on people who are different from me, and working with Special Olympics has been a big part of that.

The lessons I learned about sharing, kindness, and empathy all translate directly to serving the public good as you have to be willing to share your time and talents to make a difference. I think Country Day does a really good job of introducing this mission of service at a very young age. I think about myself as a little junior kindergartner coming into class with my backpack filled with cans for a food drive. I was learning that there are people in the world who need help, and I have the

Alex is pictured with her buddy at RyzAbove, where she interned last summer. The organization holds group fitness classes and obstacle challenges for people with developmental disabilities. She says, “This was another great way for me to channel my love of fitness into doing good, while also getting to meet and befriend some amazing people!”

power to do a small thing to make a big difference in someone else’s life.

What words of advice do you have for others about the value of serving others? Service should never feel like checking a box or a chore that you have to do. I’ve seen a lot in high school how the mindset around service that we build in Lower and Middle School—serving others to make the world a better place—becomes replaced with messaging about maximizing hours and getting into college. Whether it’s a sport, artistic pursuit, love of animals, or something else, everyone has genuine passions and talents that can be used in a service capacity. Tapping into that is incredibly important to make it a meaningful experience that you benefit from just as much as the cause and/or people that you are giving your time and efforts to.

Looking back at your time in Lower and Middle School, what lessons stick with you related to giving of yourself for the public good?

st e ’ C ! e u q i f i n g a M French Teachers are Defining the Essence of Excellence By Lee-Anne Black, editor

34 PERSPECTIVES

B

éatrice Eldredge’s French classroom buzzes with energy and excitement whenever her students receive letters sent by their seventh- and eighth-grade pen pals in Haley Brown’s class. The colorfully decorated letters, written in French, are part of a yearlong cross-divisional exchange designed to help both younger and older students authentically hone their language skills. Middle School students learn how to write a letter, incorporate new words, practice translation, and receive exposure to higher level grammar and tenses. For the Upper School students, they build confidence as they take the lead in creating a genuine connection with the younger students, while also strengthening their letter-writing skills, question formation, and personal expression. This engaging activity is just one of several experiences Country Day French teachers across all three divisions have created through collaborative professional development. In order to create stronger vertical depth in the French curriculum and celebrate francophone culture, language teachers Nadine Shenouda (Lower School), Diane Farrug and Madame Brown (Middle School), and Madame Eldredge (Upper School) worked on a Research & Development project over the summer of 2024. The seed for the R & D was planted in the fall of 2023 when “lost monster” posters appeared on the windows of the Lower School French classrooms. Upper School French students replied, pretending to have found the lost monsters. That organic collaboration prompted the teachers to want to create

more cross-divisional experiences for their students. “The 2024 R & D with my French colleagues was one of the most motivating and effective collaborations of my career,” says Madame Farrug. “We generated so many new ideas that our greatest challenge was selecting a reasonable amount of multi-level learning experiences.” “Language is a subject that requires a great deal of vertical alignment,” says Madame Brown. “The R & D was such a helpful project for me in my second year of teaching. It helped me to refine my curriculum plans to better align with what my students had already learned and would be learning in the future.” “It was an amazing learning experience to be engaged in such creative and productive work to benefit our students,” says Madame Shenouda. “We aim to make learning the French language a durable experience, not just a subject learned in school. Together, we are creating a

well-rounded and consistent program that not only meets educational standards but inspires a love of language.” Madame Eldredge, who suggested the R & D to her colleagues, adds, “Collaborating with intentionality has strengthened the connection between teachers across all three divisions enabling us to create meaningful experiences for our students and foster a more cohesive community. This, in turn, enhances our academic program. To me, this is the essence of excellence.”

addition to the pen pal and lost monster projects (who now also find their way to the Bissell Campus), here are a few other cross-divisional lessons: RESTAURANT MENUS AND REVIEW: Fourth graders work in groups to create a pretend French restaurant and menu with items and descriptions. Sixth graders receive the menus and write an imaginary review, then coordinate to create a mock Yelp page. SOCK PUPPETS: Fifth-grade French teachers Diane Farrug and David Sanders guide students to create a sock puppet character then write a digital book to practice shifting from first to third person. Fourth graders receive the puppet and scan a QR code to read the book, followed by a short review for the author. MANIE MUSICALE: Middle and Upper School students take part in this international event designed for students and teachers of French. For instance, after sharing their opinions about the songs in the competition, sixth graders make paper basketball or hoodie projects about their favorite one, which are voted on by seventh- and eighth-grade students. Meanwhile, seventh and eighth graders create brochures focused on the francophone country of a chosen artist, which are voted on by the younger students. PETIT OURS BRUN (Little Brown Bear): To work on pronunciation and fluidity, AP/IB French students read this classic French story to Lower School students after first rehearsing pronunciations and creating simple prompts. After stopping by to observe the cross-over lesson, Lower School Director of Studies Lori Mahaffey wrote in an email: “I was absolutely in awe of the Upper School students’ level of comfort with the language and the confidence they had in engaging their Lower School counterparts in rich conversation. They differentiated on the spot—recognizing the level of understanding of the Lower Schoolers in their group and pushing them further by asking questions in French that the children answered with enthusiasm. What a proud day for the Modern and Classical Language team and the French contingent in particular! C’est magnifique!”

development event for language educators in the United States. Madame Eldredge says, “The conference was so much more than an opportunity to share our success with other teachers. It provided meaningful time for us to share experiences, exchange ideas, explore curriculum possibilities related to Mardi Gras to bring back to the classroom, and grow together through professional renewal.” Giving Country Day teachers the professional development opportunities to hone their craft, attend and present at conferences, and even acquire advanced degrees, is made possible by our culture of philanthropy. Through creative cross-divisional projects, a shared commitment to vertical alignment, and the inspiration drawn from presenting their work on a national stage, these four educators have transformed language learning into something far greater than vocabulary lists and grammar drills. Their collaboration has made language learning richer and more connected for students across all three divisions.

At Charlotte Country Day School, athletics are an essential part of developing healthy, confident, and well-rounded students.

Through competition, leadership, service, and community engagement, studentathletes learn to pursue excellence in academics and athletics while competing with integrity and accountability. Guided by coaches who lead with purpose, they build resilience, mental toughness, and character, learning to support teammates, embrace challenges, and lead with empathy and respect. Rooted in the traditions and values of Buccaneers athletics, student-athletes gain a deep understanding of connection, growth, and service, ultimately becoming courageous, values-driven individuals who make meaningful contributions to their teams, school, and community long after their playing days are over.

BUCCANEERS ATHLETICS DEVELOPS: Excellence in academics and athletics, recognizing that each strengthens the other. Leadership through team experiences, mentorship, and the Student Athlete Council. Character grounded in integrity, accountability, respect, and compassion. Resilience through challenge, competition, and personal growth. Community and Connection through school traditions, teamwork, and school pride. Impact through wellness initiatives, outreach, and giving back to others.

38 PERSPECTIVES

In keeping with the school’s strategic pillars (see page 4), a robust athletics program is integral to providing students with a unified wellness infrastructure that keeps performance standards high yet provides levels of support to nurture healthy living and striving. To support that vision, this past year Masanori Toguchi’s role was expanded to Director of Athletics, Health & Wellness.

REMOVING THE MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA In recognition of the growing mental health issues affecting today’s children— nationally and right here at Country Day—ChaChi Sullivan was hired in 2023 as director of student-athlete performance and development. In his role, Coach Sullivan helps studentathletes build skills that carry beyond the field, including: • Staying focused and managing emotions • Handling pre-game nerves and pressure • Building mental resilience • Strengthening healthy habits for overall well-being Over the past three years, he has logged more than 300 individual counseling sessions with students. Frequently discussed topics include feeling overwhelmed, anxiety, depression, injury and return to play, mental preparation/ toughness, peer conflict, coaching conflict, and belonging. And he teaches a unit called Fueling Performance through Connection in

Freshman Seminar, in which he discusses the benefits of belonging such as improved psychological well-being, reduced substance abuse, brain activation, and greater life satisfaction. He also meets regularly with coaches to help players sustain motivation, develop a growth mindset, and empower students to stay focused on established goals. In a recent report, Coach Sullivan wrote: “Preseason and postseason surveys show that student-athletes are experiencing a decrease in feeling overwhelmed as well as decreased anxiety and depression” as a result of efforts to help students set realistic expectations, goals, and boundaries.

KEEPING BODIES HEALTHY AND STRONG Student-athletes are also supported physically through robust Sports Performance and Sports Medicine coaches, trainers, programming, and facilities. Our Sports Medicine program is focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sportsrelated injuries for all of our Middle School, JV, and varsity student-athletes. Four full-time athletic trainers provide student-athletes:

• Immediate, professional care for injury evaluation and treatment • Full access to the 2,600 square foot O’Leary Sports Medicine Center for rehab and recovery • Personalized prevention strategies to stay on the field • Seamless coordination with the team physician for top-level care Director of Sports Performance Stefan Montanez says, “Our program is committed to the health, fitness, and athletic performance of every student-athlete, working in unison with our athletic trainers and sports program heads to implement the most effective and comprehensive training that is seamlessly integrated into the athletic experience.” Student-athletes build the physical foundation to compete at their best, focusing on: • Sport-specific, tailored workouts using a needs analysis approach • Developing the strength, speed, and skills needed for in-game performance • Access to the 5,500 square foot Sports Performance Center and tools like Volt Athletics and Titan Sport GPS Sensors • Ongoing sports nutrition resources and education for athletes, parents, and coaches. • Encouragement to ‘Raise The Bar’ through accountability, consistency, and effort

Assistant Sports Performance Coach Haley Brown, who led a sports nutrition presentation discussing macronutrients, fueling, and the female-athlete triad, shared: “What a great experience to talk to young girls about their intertwined relationships with food, sports, and well-being It was also fantastic to then make food together and analyze nutrition labels. These are such important topics to discuss, and it’s clear these girls want to engage with the conversation!” Thanks to the full complement of support our student-athletes receive, they can confidently compete with integrity, pride, and purpose. ELEVATING EDUCATION By Lee-Anne Black, editor

Through the John M. Belk Endowment internship program, MC Belk Pilon ’92 is giving high school and college-age Buccaneers a meaningful experience

52 PERSPECTIVES

In early August, in a large, bright conference room at the John M. Belk Endowment (JMBE), eight Country Day college-age alumni presented their capstone research projects focused on increasing access and success in post-secondary education. It was the culmination of a 10-week internship program, launched by JMBE in 2019, to give high school and college-aged students a meaningful, hands-on experience exploring the intersection of education, workforce development policy, and philanthropy in North Carolina. Since its inception, more than 25 Country Day students and alumni have participated in this thoughtful internship, each bringing their own insight and energy to projects that align with the endowment’s mission to give all North Carolinians the chance at long-term, family-sustaining careers.

MC Belk Pilon ’92 serves as president and Board chair of the John M. Belk Endowment, which was founded by her father, the late John Belk. She leads an organization that embraces the idea that philanthropy is most impactful when it is built on trust, strong relationships, and truly knowing and understanding the communities it supports. The endowment conducts extensive research and exhaustive site visits to experience the realities of college access and success firsthand so they can best serve people left out of the system. “What I really like about this internship,” says Hadley Keller ’25, who just completed her fourth summer with JMBE, “is that we get to be part of something that’s bigger than ourselves. We’re surrounded every day by people who come to work knowing that they’re making an impact.” Hadley, who is studying marketing at Texas Christian University spent this past summer focused on the strategies community colleges use to win trust and enrollment, an assignment that allowed her to develop the questions and then conduct interviews with various stakeholders from college presidents to marketing agencies. Nolan Bates ’25 has worked at JMBE over the course of three summers with assignments focused on militaryaffiliated learners, which aligns with his knowledge as part of ROTC at UNCChapel Hill. “Having the base knowledge to grow on each summer allows you to really gain a grasp of our mission, and because I worked this summer with a lot of the outside connections I made last year, I was able to execute even better.” This mission to elevate through education applies to the JMBE internship program as well. Interns are paired with mentors and given numerous opportunities to grow in their abilities to become highly effective workplace leaders. As is the case

with some internships, this is not busy work. In fact, MC and her team build in learning opportunities for the interns. They participate in learning sessions, site visits and workshops with major employers and strategy groups. Bryce Vanfield ’25, who also just finished his third summer as an intern says his most valuable experience this year was the Speed Trust Conference. “We learned how trust is the foundation of all aspects of your life and your relationships and how you go about doing things.” And he experienced that firsthand as his JMBE mentor “put a lot of trust in me to build out a $300,000 grant this summer.” Bryce plans to bring back his learnings to leadership roles he holds at High Point University. “Team culture is very important,” says MC. “And we want everyone to feel they can be curious and ask questions with no judgement. Our logo is a chain link fence. If you hit the bottom, the impact reverberates throughout the entire fence. These

kids bring new perspectives and ask questions that make us think. That’s the value of trust. It’s woven into everything we do and that makes us a tight group. It’s fun to watch these young people. They are inspiring.” Another aspect of this internship is broadening the lens of students who are on a path to become business and community leaders, and who’ve always been surrounded by strong support systems. “I think it’s important that we acknowledge that everyone’s life looks different,” says first-year intern Avery Hedrick ’26, tapped by MC because she was so impressive during the one-day Senior Externship in January. “I’ve been taught by everyone here how to think more mindfully and more critically. Before heading off to her first year at Ohio State to study social work, Avery conducted asset resource mapping for community colleges. Morris ‘Moe’ Davis ’25, in his second year as an intern, says that at first he was focused too much on figuring out the problem and not recognizing that others were not as fortunate as he was. His research this summer focused on retention models for male post-secondary success. “I did a lot of research to understand why young boys aren’t finishing school,” he explains. “Then I put myself in their shoes and tried to figure out ways to keep them engaged in furthering their studies.” Based on his project, Morris plans to create a club at his college, the University of South Carolina, to support athletes who are no longer playing and may be struggling with the loss of team camaraderie. Reese Stanfield ’26 and Audrey Neill ’25 worked together on a new regional initiative called Good Jobs Western North Carolina. “We spent a lot of time researching community college websites to determine how they present their credentials and degrees to prospective students, then made recommendations on ways the colleges could increase their pipeline,” explains

54 PERSPECTIVES

MC Belk Pilon ’92

In many ways, what MC has created epitomizes the “Bucs for Life” mentality. She is paying forward the education and opportunities she had while teaching a new generation of Bucs how to lead purposeful lives.

Reese, a three-year intern, who is a freshman at Wake Forest, and wrote about the program for her college essay. Audrey, who also attends Wake Forest, adds that the importance of cultivating relationships is her biggest takeaway from the internship. “When we were doing our interviews, a lot of people said ‘yes’ to us because we were from the endowment and it has built such good relationships with the community colleges. I know going forward that I can call or text anyone on this team and they will respond right back. It’s a network that cares about me and wants me to continue to grow and be my best self.” In many ways, what MC has created epitomizes the “Bucs for Life” mentality. She is paying forward the education and opportunities she had while teaching a new generation of Bucs how to lead purposeful lives.

Alumni Matters

A Weekend to

REMEMBER

From Friday evening on Our Farm to the final cheers on the lacrosse field, Alumni Weekend 2026 brought the Country Day community together in ways that were meaningful, memorable, and genuinely fun. Old friendships picked up without missing a beat. New memories found their place alongside old ones. And the spirit that defines this community was on full display.

Bucs Together Days of Giving Sets a New Record The generosity of the Buccaneer community reached new heights this year. In just 48 hours, 696 donors raised a record $321,238 for the Country Day Fund, surpassing every previous campaign. Led by co-chairs Rebecca Adams Starrs ’09 and Laurens Adams Threlkeld ’04, the response to this year’s theme, “What matters to you?,” was resounding. The answer, it turns out, is Country Day itself.

Honoring Eric Law ’76

T

he Distinguished Service Legacy Luncheon remains one of the weekend’s most treasured traditions, uniting tenured current and retired faculty and staff, beloved alumni, and valued friends of the school. This year’s Frank Dowd IV ’74 Alumni Service Award was presented to Eric Law ’76, a recognition of the quiet, sustained dedication that defines true service to our community. From serving on the school’s Board of Trustees and Alumni Council to bolstering our Affirmation of Community, Eric has remained committed to Country Day for decades. Professionally, as retired director of Promising Pages, he has expanded opportunities through books to underserved children and partnered with Lower School in service learning initiatives (see page 31). Eric’s lifelong commitment to service and his impact in the greater Charlotte community reflects the very best of what it means to be a Buccaneer.

THE

th ANNUAL BIPOC GATHERING

As the sun set over Our Farm on Friday evening, alumni and their families, faculty, and staff gathered for the fifth annual BIPOC Friday Evening Gathering. With support from Janalyn Moonie Walton ’00, the evening offered something rare: unhurried time for connection, reflection, and community.

A SURPRISE TRIBUTE TO MARY BETH LUXTON Before the alumni lacrosse and baseball games got underway, Mary Beth Luxton was presented with a dedication plaque that will hang permanently in the Touma Stadium press box, a fitting tribute to her 39 years (and counting) of commitment to Country Day. Mary Beth’s influence, dedication, and spirit have been felt on every field, in every hallway, and across generations of our community. Her role has never been limited to caring for athletes, but also as a steady presence and powerful voice for Bucs athletics.

Class Reunions

ON THE QUAD

Classes ending in ’1s and ’6s gathered on the Quad—the heart of Cannon Campus—for reunion celebrations filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the effortless warmth of long friendships. There is something singular about returning to the place where so much began.

Thank You!

None of it happens without the people behind the scenes. Sincere gratitude to 2025-26 Alumni Council President Clary Hilliard Gray ’00, Alumni Weekend Chair Nancy Blue Weadon ’06, to our entire Alumni Council, and to every volunteer who gave their time and energy to make these days what they were. You came back. You gave. You made an impact.

Alumni Matters

Honoring the

PAST. Building for the FUTURE. A look at the story of Bucs athletics — from its founding years to today

Since 1941, Charlotte Country Day School has embraced a vision of educational excellence that celebrates each student’s unique abilities and talents. Athletics became part of that vision in the 1950s, launching a tradition that has grown into a defining element of the Country Day experience. From humble beginnings to championship seasons, the story of Bucs athletics is one of perseverance, passion, and pride. In 2024, the revival of the Athletics Hall of Honor gave new life to that legacy, and physical displays and archival collections were planned to ensure these stories and accomplishments remain a source of inspiration for generations to come. A new physical installation now anchors the front space of the Bruton Smith Athletic Center, where an athletics history timeline traces the program’s defining milestones and the people who shaped them. This timeline highlights the evolution of our athletic program— its growth, defining milestones, and enduring impact on generations of students— and affirms that while we honor the past, we are always building for the future. That same timeline lives online, accessible to alumni and families wherever they are. This project would not have come together without the dedication of Athletics Hall of Honor Committee Chair and Trustee Kelly Walton Miller ’90, whose tireless support made it possible. We invite you to explore it, both in person and online.
