INTRODUCTION Charlotte SHOUT! is an aspirational multi-week festival designed to showcase our community by celebrating Charlotte’s creativity and innovation through art, music, food, and ideas. Located primarily in Uptown Charlotte, SHOUT! will feature exceptionally curated programming from around the corner and around the world.

Charlotte SHOUT! curates a sensory feast that weaves together the inspiring talents of internationally acclaimed and locally-grown artists, musicians, chefs, and thought leaders. We present a creative, inclusive, and innovative arts experience through a series of coordinated festival events designed to bring people together.

Our Vision

Make charlotte a premier destination for culturally diverse arts, ideas, and experiences. We have dedicated a primary aspect of the festival to highlight, promote, and present the immensely creative assets in our region. We call this platform Made in CLT and invite you to bring your ideas, energy, and passion to the festival. We encourage you to think outside the box and be unique. Charlotte SHOUT! is a family friendly event, viewed by people of all ages and ethnicities. Find your voice and SHOUT!

“Made in CLT” boundaries: • Applicants living within a 50-mile radius or working in Charlotte, NC are eligible. • Artists are eligible regardless of age, race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical ability.

ART Charlotte SHOUT! is seeking transformative art installations from imaginative and inspired story tellers to support the backbone of the event. We invite artists, designers, creatives, architects, engineers, businesses, and educational institutions to present ideas, designs, and concepts to be a part of the festival in 2021.

Projection Art & Light Art Charlotte SHOUT! is looking for big ideas and invite you to be as creative as possible in your proposal. Proposed works will be temporary installations that should explore an engaging idea or thematic concept while also employing light as a component of the work. Successful proposals will demonstrate a unique experience of light, new technology, sustainability, accessibility, and innovative thinking. Light does not need to be the primary focus of your work, however, we are looking for projects that are more than just illuminated. Our hope is for participants to interact with your work during the day and night. Projection artists should consider architecturally interesting buildings, sculptural objects, ground surfaces, or alleyways inside the SHOUT! footprint. You may submit your concept together with a suggested site however, successful proposals can be assigned to any building (or alternative surface) if deemed curatorially appropriate by the Charlotte SHOUT! team.

BUDGET

$15,000 budget The budget includes artist fee, all labor costs to build the artwork (from concept to installation on site), all materials, installation, de-installation, engineering services, testing needed for your artwork, shipping costs, all travel and accommodations. The Charlotte SHOUT! organizers will provide power, security, discounted hotel rate for artist and basic maintenance.

Immersive Art

This category opens the door to artists/producers to create without boundaries. We are looking for proposals that expand the dimensions of SHOUT! with breathtaking endeavors. Projects should be interactive, thought provoking, visually dynamic, and a feast for the senses. Eclectic pairings and unusual collaborations are encouraged and could include hybrid performances or installations featuring creative combinations of art, music, food, and ideas.

Third Party Proposals

This invitation specifically requests proposals from small to large-scale venues, cultural institutions/organizations, non-profit organizations, event producers, promoters, and artists who are interested in staging a selfmanaged event/installation/exhibit/presentation. To assist in the meeting the costs of delivering your work, Charlotte SHOUT! will consider proposals based on the following funding options: •

A submission that is fully funded by the applicant or a third-party. If awarded, Charlotte SHOUT! will provide a marketing benefits package to you and/or your third-party contributor.

A submission which has been partially funded by the applicant or a thirdparty but seeks additional financial support from Charlotte SHOUT!. If awarded, Charlotte SHOUT! will provide a marketing benefits package to you and/or your third-party contributor.

A submission which requests full investment from Charlotte SHOUT!. If awarded, Charlotte SHOUT! reserves the right to seek third party sponsorship and assign rights and benefits to the respective third-party sponsor.

installation requirements

Durability

Artists will be expected to maintain their installations at a high level throughout the entire duration of the event. Therefore, installations designed for Charlotte SHOUT! must be weather-proof and able to last (including load in and strike) with minimal maintenance. Your piece must be technically and physically durable to withstand all kinds of elements. If your installation is interactive, please ensure that components are resilient and can operate safely in adverse weather conditions.

Sustainability

Charlotte SHOUT! is actively working towards the delivery of the most sustainable event in the region. We are committed to the concept of a Circular Economy aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Demonstrating how you have incorporated sustainable practices into each stage of your installation’s design, construction, transportation, operation, and dismantling is encouraged.

Accessibility

Charlotte SHOUT! is committed to keeping the festival accessible for everyone. Please remember our audience includes the elderly, parents with small children, and those living with temporary or permanent disabilities. Applicants are encouraged to consider generally accepted design principles in the development of submissions including the addition of accessible features to provide sensory, auditory, or visual interactivity options.

MUSIC Charlotte SHOUT! seeks to highlight new and innovative live music experiences across multiple genres. We invite both emerging and established artists, music producers, promoters, and venue operators to present ideas which focus on artist and audience development to be part of the festival in 2021. Programming should showcase music as the central offering for audiences.

Showcase Stages

Charlotte SHOUT! will program several stages throughout the festival footprint (see page 5).

Stages are open to solo artists or full bands performing music from all genres. Sets will be a maximum of 40 minutes and will include time for hosted interviews. Selected artists will be guaranteed one performance. All production and basic backline equipment will be supplied. Limited free parking will be available. Artist will be required to participate in a 30 min meet & greet after their performance. Artist will receive access to the Backstage Lounge to meet & socialize with other artists and industry members.

IDEAS Charlotte SHOUT! seeks thoughtleaders and innovators who are working to address global and local problems, showcasing cutting-edge creativity, and contributing to a smarter future for our city, region, and planet. We encourage proposals from small to large-scale venues, cultural institutions/ organizations, non-profit groups, corporate entities, event producers, promoters and artists who are interested in staging a SHOUT! Ideas presentation.

We are looking for Charlotte changemakers to share their thoughts and challenge the status quo by pushing the limits of innovative thinking. Your idea could be a talk or workshop, a documentary or podcast, a spoken word performance, a demonstration of cutting-edge technology or an immersive experience that provides a unique perspective. We want your bold, ambitious, and thought-provoking ideas and concepts. To assist in the meeting the costs of delivering your work, Charlotte SHOUT! will consider proposals based on the following funding options: •

FOOD Charlotte SHOUT! seeks innovative food and beverage creators to share their savory and delectable talent with our attendees. This invitation is open to chefs, restaurateurs, artisan food producers, food truck operators, mixologists, brew masters, wine connoisseurs, baristas, food producers, food artists, and more. We want your big, audacious concepts and ideas that will showcase the creative epicurean landscape in Charlotte.

The footprint for Charlotte SHOUT! will become a village of culinary exploration. Your concept could be a talk or hands-on workshop, a demonstration, a sampling event, or an exclusive dining experience.

Application Details

Applications must be submitted via the online application form. There will be no application fee for any section. No applications will be accepted via email or hardcopy. All applications will be processed through SlideRoom. Applicants will select the correct form to fill out within SlideRoom depending on which section they are applying for: Art, Music, or Ideas. Once submitted, applicants will not be allowed to edit their applications. Charlotte Center City Partners takes no responsibility for access or connection issues. Benefits

Participating in Charlotte SHOUT! provides a number of benefits, including: •

Marketing support for your event through integration with the wider Charlotte SHOUT! program and marketing campaign. This includes a listing of the event on the Charlotte SHOUT! website and inclusion in the Charlotte SHOUT! digital marketing program. Subsidized venue rates and production costs for events held at SHOUT! venues. Networking events with other program participants. Further support, such as investment in the event, venue or talent may be possible subject to negotiations and conditions.

Sponsor Activations

This Invitation process is not applicable for industry or corporate hospitality events, brand activations, or product launches. Please get in touch with the Charlotte SHOUT! team if you would like to discuss opportunities to align your brand with the festival. 19


Selection Process

This open call to artists is being undertaken to enable Charlotte SHOUT! organizers to identify the most qualified artist(s) for this opportunity. A selection committee including Charlotte Center City Partners, Blumenthal Performing Arts, and community stakeholders, will review eligible artists’ application, determine a shortlist of finalists and select for the 2021 Charlotte SHOUT! exhibitions.

Where does SHOUT! take place?

Charlotte SHOUT! takes place all over Uptown, and a few spots in South End. Please review the site map on page 5 to see all of the locations.

Will there be any workshops or opportunities to ask questions about the proposal process?

Yes, we will have multiple, optional workshops for applicants to attend. These workshops are for applicants to get a better understanding of SHOUT!, ask any questions they may have, and or express any concerns with their applications.

Can artists propose a pairing of two solo art/shows to be exhibited together? Yes, artists can apply together but the funds will stay the same as if it was one project.

Can you submit proposals for multiple categories? Yes, applicants may apply to participate within multiple categories.
