Athletics
A Message From Kevin Christmas
CCHS Athletic Director

Wow, what a year! And once again, CCHS excelled. Despite being the smallest enrollment in the NCHSAA 4A division, our student athletes succeeded in both the classroom and sports venues. Charlotte Catholic was awarded the prestigious Wells Fargo Conference Cup acknowledging the best overall sports program in the conference. This was earned from the 11 conference championships and numerous other successful program finishes When we reflect on the continued success of our athletic program, I can attribute it to the culture of our community Our student athletes are driven to success because the value of achievement is instilled in them early This, coupled with the pride of wearing CATHOLIC on their uniform, provides the motivation to perform at an outstanding level
It will be interesting during the 2025–26 school year as CCHS experiences a classification and conference designation change. With any change, comes new challenges but also new opportunities. The CCHS athletic program is built on a strong foundation of faith and conviction that will serve us well.
I take great pride and humility in being the leader of the greatest sports program in the state of NC

Athletic Boosters and Sponsors
Charlotte Catholic Boosters Club Update
It was another school year packed with fun and fundraising events!
The Cougar Boosters kicked off the year in July with a relaunch of the Cougar Club Sports Pass process. Supporting all CCHS athletic programs, there were nearly 1,800 “season ticket” holders - including the best fans: the students!
Highlights from the year:
August, the Boosters hosted a Saturday morning bootcamp where 60 CCHS moms were led in a workout by Catholic’s own Coach Mike Hazel.
September, the 43rd Annual Golf Tournament was held at Carolina Lakes Golf Club, where 98 golfers paired birdies with bogeys while raising funds to support Cougar athletics.
January, the Boosters hosted Winterfest, a community-wide social event that brought together 232 current, future, and alumni families to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.
March, the Student-Athlete Raffle took place a fundraising event powered by student-athlete participation.
Additionally, the Boosters hosted four Signing Day events to celebrate student-athletes continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

A heartfelt thank o to Booster leaders, volun d h i i f

Coaches Corner
Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach and CCHS Math Teacher - Dee Bier
Tell us a little about yourself.
The 2025–2026 school year will be my 20th year teaching and coaching at Charlotte Catholic High School. My husband, Jay, and I moved to Charlotte from Long Island, NY, in 2005 after getting married. We have three children: CJ, who will be a sophomore at CCHS this year; Casey, who will be a freshman; and Jack, who is going into 7th grade. I played both basketball and lacrosse at Hofstra University, and later earned my Master’s in Education from St. John’s University.
You have had many successes... how do you attribute them?
The credit goes to the girls—their work ethic, commitment, and the way they hold each other to a high standard. Our parents play a big role too, reinforcing the values we emphasize and supporting in countless ways behind the scenes. I’ve been fortunate to coach remarkable young women whose success reflects both their dedication and the strong foundation built at home.
How do you plan and execute a successful season?
Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the team and understanding where each player fits—and playing to those strengths. Scheduling is also important—we seek out strong out-of-conference opponents.
What keeps you motivated?
Pride in the program. Our alumni helped lay the foundation for something truly special. It means something to say you played Girls Lacrosse at Charlotte Catholic.
What is your leadership mantra?
I believe in holding both myself and the girls to a high standard. We don’t have superstars—every player is expected to show up, work hard, and give her best. What makes this group special is how they hold each other accountable with both high expectations and strong support. Coaching them is a privilege.
What is your coaching philosophy?
Before every game, we say a prayer together: “I am only one…” It’s a reminder that we each have a responsibility to give our all, to trust our teammates to do the same, and to leave the rest in God’s hands. That prayer captures who we are—grateful, committed, and united.
CCHS finds success in academics as well as athletics year after year. What makes this school unique?
What sets CCHS apart is the strong sense of shared purpose across the community. The faith-based environment also plays a role in shaping the way we treat one another, with an emphasis on character, accountability, and respect.

Head Football Coach - Keith Emery
Tell us a little about yourself.
My first head coaching job was at Western New England College in Springfield, MA at the age of 32. I coached there for 13 years before moving to North Carolina in 2018. I have two children, 18-year-old Alexandra and 16-year-old Matthew. I have been married to the former Christina Kollay for 20 years. We enjoy traveling, especially out west, going to major sporting events, and we are major putt-putt aficionados.
What drew you to CCHS?
What drew me to CCHS were the qualities I saw in the students. Guided by their faith and driven more by achievement than acknowledgment, Catholic is home to a special group of individuals
The opportunity to impact that kind of kid again really drew me to CCHS. Using the sport I love, I strive to help these kids learn to value, appreciate, and sacrifice for others. I yearn to turn them into more than a collection of talented, high-achieving individuals while teaching lessons that they will draw inspiration from for years to come.
What was the highlight of the 2024–2025 season?
The win over Providence was the highlight for me. The season turned on a huge pick-six, we built confidence and played better every week after.
How do you plan and execute a successful season?
I like to chop everything into bite-sized pieces. Pre-season is my favorite part of the season, it’s the shortest, but the boys are so excited to get ready for what lies ahead. Every team is undefeated, everyone has a positive outlook, the energy is palpable. We then break the inseason phase into two, three, or four-game thematic “chunks” as well. We emphasize the rearview mentality of progressing through the season, chunk by chunk and game by game.
What keeps you motivated?
Small victories. The word “yet” is important to me. We talk about being confused when first learning something. We don’t know how to do that thing - yet. We emphasize keeping at it until we do.
What is your leadership mantra?
I have three basic teaching mantras: Always On, One Better, and Prepare to Perform.
What is your coaching philosophy? Preparation, process, discipline, diligence, and the constant push for improvement define my coaching philosophy.

Most rewarding thing about being part of the CCHS faculty?
I love the camaraderie that exists between teachers, administrators, counselors and the support staff I have been here 18 years and despite many changes, that bond and connection still remains On any given day, I know that if I need help, it will be there
What’s unique about CCHS?
The thing that is unique about our school is the sense of community. There are many schools that can provide a good education, but CCHS provides both a strong education and provides students with a strong community that is always there to support them.

Highlights from Theatre Director, Marcus Riter
The 2024–2025 school year was a vibrant and memorable one for Charlotte Catholic Theatre, filled with diverse productions, student leadership, and a deep commitment to supporting the arts within our school and greater MACS community
We kicked off the season with Scrooge and Marley, an original prequel to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol This dramatic interpretation brought to life, by means of an origin story, many of the characters audiences have come to know in this classic tale Later in the fall, Haters by Don Zolidis took the stage, directed by senior Julia Cox Her leadership and the cast’s comedic timing lit up two evenings of lively performance
e of the regional host sites for the North Carolina Theatre Conference. rformed Twitch by Stephen Gregg, while the Acting and Acting Honors original play by Marcus Riter. These performances highlighted both ity.
, g g s classes returned to the stage with a heartwarming production of Charlotte’s Web, based on the classic novel by E.B. White. This special performance brought hundreds of third grade students from across the MACS schools into the Fine Arts Center theatre for a joyful celebration of friendship and imagination.
Our year culminated in the spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof, which was such a hit that we added two additional performances, including a matinee. The show featured a cast of over 40 students, from freshmen to seniors, and celebrated tradition, change, and resilience through powerful storytelling and music. Behind every production, our 9th-grade Behind the Scenes class and the Theatre: Design and Tech classes worked tirelessly to design and construct the numerous set pieces that brought each show to life. Costuming was handled with skill and creativity by the Costume Design and Honors Costume Design classes, whose students in grades 10–12 collaborated closely with actors and directors to create cohesive, production-specific looks.
Beyond our own shows, Charlotte Catholic Theatre provided vital technical expertise to the school’s choral, band, and dance departments, and supported all MACS events held in our facility Our students and faculty also managed event logistics for outside rentals, helping make the MACS Fine Arts Center one of the premier performing arts venues in South Charlotte
The world is a stage - thank you for standing in the spotlight with us magic of live theatre
Until the curtain rises again, Marcus Riter

Cougar Classic
In the fall of 2024, four CCHS alumni, Matt Daly ’06, Dane Robinson ’06, Johnny O’Boyle ’09, and Tucker Windle ’09, came together with a shared goal: to strengthen the CCHS community, and raise money for the school. From that conversation, the Cougar Classic golf tournament was born. Over the next several months, they partnered with the CCHS Advancement Team to bring the vision to life. On April 14, 2025, the inaugural Cougar Classic was held at Cedarwood Country Club and welcomed a sold-out field of alumni, parents, faculty, clergy, and friends of CCHS.
