I can’t believe that we are already in the winter months. The past couple months have been so exciting and fun! This community has a lot of skilled dancers that attend these concerts, it’s a blast to watch everyone just have fun. The talent here always amazes me. It ranges from pottery making, painting, musicality, athleticism, and so much more! This community is special and it is a joy to be around you all.

I have been with FirstService Residential the management company as well as at Cresswind PTC for 4 years this December. I have seen this wonderful Community grow and become a very special place in my heart.

I share this story a lot, but when I had only been here a little while, one of our residents’ houses got struck by lightening. I will never forget the statement that he made, that made such a big impact on my life about this community. He said, “We came here never thinking anything like this would happen to us with our house getting struck by lighting and having to rebuild, but we came here to meet friends and what has happened with the generous love and support that was poured out by the whole community we have found a Family!”

This is such a true statement about Cresswind PTC. Yes, you will meet friends but really, we are one big family living life together. Thank you Cresswind PTC for letting me be a part of that reality!

Coming Together with the Love for Music

H

ave you felt like living here has been like a shot in the arm, and not for COVID-19, but for your wellbeing? Since moving to Cresswind/PTC three years ago, the “active” in active lifestyle has truly lived up to its billing.

For my wife Sue and I, our Cresswind journey, like for so many of us, started with a “field trip” up to the Lake Lanier development…with a view to move out from under the large, empty home that doesn’t make much sense any more.

This after Sue quite accurately pointed out that our social life at the time was woefully deficient, particularly in my case.

Well, score a home run for our active and social lives. Even before we saw our Laurel plan finished in late July,

2018, we began to engage with new friends at the outdoor pool. Soon after we did move in, we became involved in pickleball, joined a few groups that offered card games, attended fun events like Trivia Night, and certainly took advantage of the gym and indoor pool. We were indeed meeting and making new friends. And then came an opportunity that brought both of us closer to a life-long passion…a return to involvement in music.

My interest in music began when I took my first percussion lessons during the Spring of 1971 back in hometown Chicago from jazz drummer Joe Dituri.

He taught me to compliment the combo I was playing with, to blend in with the music, and diversify beats and

rhythm. Almost a life-lesson wrapped in a music lesson. I further learned the craft playing in our high school band, orchestra, and jazz ensemble, forming a rock band or two in those years. For Sue, she honed her vocal talents in church choir and high school mixed chorus. Certainly our love of music is one of the common interests we share, you can imagine our long car rides will include serious vocal sessions. While raising our family, I dipped in and out of music projects mainly as a hobby, and in more recent years joined our church praise band along with Sue. The idea for a music project here at Cresswind/PTC started in the clubhouse in March, 2019 after speaking with our then Lifestyle Director, Nicole Jurovics

LIFESTYLE at a glance about possible talent within Cresswind/ PTC. She encouraged the idea by having a few of us simply sit down and have a discussion. This preliminary meeting took place between Ance Denny, Michael Diamantides, Tracy Griffin and myself. Putting out a call on the Cresswind/PTC Facebook page for those interested in some type of music program, we moved ahead with interest from another seven residents. This was at a time when phase three was barely underway, so we were not even half way occupied as a community, yet we saw promising interest and talent.

As things settled out, the neighborhood band known as Last Shot was formed, featuring Jody Duffy on vocals/percussion, Ance Denny on bass and vocals, Doug Marier on lead/flair guitar, Michael Diamantides on keyboards, and Mark Summers doing drums. We were all residents, all motivated to begin a home-grown program, and all had a similar view on music and possible future direction.

Working together in May and June, 2019 at Jody’s house, we began building our first set of popular songs from younger days. Again in coordination with Nicole, she slotted us in for our first “gig”…we opened for the Street Fighting Band in late June, 2019 with a single set of eight songs right here at our own pavilion.

Throughout the past two years, Last Shot has had the pleasure of performing for our community several times, but always in motion. We have had a few personnel changes, certainly new songs and material, and a look to play beyond our home turf here at Cresswind/PTC. That big and exciting occasion came when Cresswind residents Chris and Colleen Owens asked us to join their fund-raising efforts in honor of their daughter Meghan, lost to us in June, 2020. Last Shot both opened and backed country star Phil Vassar (fraternity brother of Chris) on May 11th, 2021 at PTC Drake Field, all in an effort to launch and support the Meghan Marie suicide

prevention cause. What an amazing example of community support and involvement.

The launch and ongoing project work with Last Shot is not the only chapter when it comes to music here at Cresswind/PTC. The idea that a few of us can come together and find common musical ground is growing.

Here is how that sometimes happens: my good friend and neighbor Jim

Kuni and I got to talking about music, probably at a party or at the pool, and in passing he mentions that he used to play guitar in his younger days. He tells me he still has his instruments, but never really pulls them out to try out the old fingers. Okay, I replied, so let’s get together and try a few tunes, see if the old passion for playing is still there.

And we did get together in March, 2020, out on our back porch, during

an epidemic. Magic happened. We played through at least six songs, Sue joined us on some vocal harmonies, and the beginnings of another community project called Impromptu was formulated. The idea with this concept, as the name suggests, is to explore different generations, use a slant toward acoustic music, and just try new interpretations, lineup, instruments and formats.

So today, Jim, Sue, and I are joined by Chuck Meassick, Kelly Meassick, Rick Sauer, and new friend Mark Kendall… all with very similar stories to that of Jim’s. Other friends and neighbors have gone on with their own projects. Ance and Jody have teamed up with Tom Johnson to form the Mud Flaps, seen often at our TGIF gatherings, and George Anderson will take us into bluegrass. And all along the way, Rick Sauer has provided a lot of our background and party music as DJ Rick. Surely we will see more of the same here and in other local Cresswind communities. Couldn’t we see a concert pianist, or vocalist, or string ensemble from right here at Cresswind/PTC? Indeed, why limit the talent to music? How about a dance group, a stage play, a comedy hour?

Back to that initial thought on trying to increase your own activity and a social life. I feel like I am at the top of my musical journey, with a few concepts yet to be explored… and I have my Cresswind residency to thank for it. Yes, you heard that correctly, and hopefully you can understand how

I can say that. The point of my story is this: we have such great opportunities to take our lives in many exciting and satisfying directions right here in our home community.

Don’t be hesitant, decide for yourself to explore this part of your life, perhaps to a greater extent than you thought possible. Just look at what my wife Sue has accomplished, along with friends Jim, Chuck, Kelly, Rick, Mark K, Michael D, Jody, Doug …and having a great time doing so. They inspire me as we take our music forward as well as getting to know them as good friends.

Undoubtedly the gift to us all is the support and appreciation that comes from our community. It is truly a pleasure and a privilege to be able to take the hard work put in by each musical team and play for our friends and neighbors. a As I look back on that critical day when Sue and I made our decision to move to Cresswind/PTC, it was in many ways a leap of faith. It was our pathway into retirement, the next phase for us, and just exactly what did that mean? By choice, we knew our senior days would not be like those experienced by our parents as we have been active all our lives, and so would this be a good fit? Well, so far, so good, and we have to concentrate on maintaining our voices, agile hands, and an open mind on musical tastes. Here’s to another year of amazing music!

Whippoorwill™ at Cresswind® Peachtree City Cresswind participates in 5th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes

T

he Fayette Humane Society (FHS) is hosting its 5th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes in concert with Harry Norman, REALTORS from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on December 5, 2021. The tour will feature five homes in Peachtree City that will open their doors to the community to showcase their architecture and holiday décor. In addition to participating local musicians and culinary businesses, four of the homes are paired with local designers to add a unique flare.

As always, 100% of proceeds from the tour will be used to fund the FHS spay and neuter program and to pay for the medical treatment of animals in its care. Since its beginnings in 1973, the FHS is the oldest humane organization in Fayette

County and is a nonprofit animal rescue group staffed entirely by volunteers. It does not have a shelter, so the animals live in temporary foster homes until they are adopted. Prior to adoption, they are examined for health issues by veterinarians, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered.

This year’s tour features homes in the following neighborhoods: North Cove, Lake Peachtree, Pleasance Grove and Cresswind.

Tickets are available for $35.00 per person at Harry Norman, REALTORS, Suite 110, 665 Highway 74 South, and at The Nest, Suite 1050, 310 City Circle.
