Time really does fly! It feels like we were just preparing for Christmas and all the fun activities that go along with the Holiday season. There is always something exciting about starting a new year. I don’t know if it’s the idea of getting to start something fresh or the fun of picking New Year’s resolutions to try to keep. By this time in the New Year, resolutions have already been dropped and some people have already given up on their goals for the year. I want to encourage all Cresswind residents and myself to continue our goals. Let’s not give up on the things we can all accomplish this year!

We have a lot of fun ideas and plans coming up! There will be a mix of some classic activities that you all know and love, along with some brand new activities that I think everyone will enjoy. This new year has already thrown some challenges our way but we know how to adapt and still have fun! I can’t wait to continue everything that Lifestyle has to offer.

Arts & Crafts Club Providing a Way to Connect, Grow, and Learn with Others.

C

reativity abounds in Cresswind!

Some people have a lifelong passion while others now have time to explore new interests or develop an unknown talent. When moving to a new community, it can be difficult to find others who share your interest. Arts & Crafts covers a wide range of activities – from knitting or crocheting a simple scarf to dumping out a box of junk to create a stunning mixed media piece of art. Within those interest groups, there

is also a wide range of skill levels – from dabblers to true artisans. Fortunately, the Art room in the Cresswind Amenity Center provides a pleasant area for individuals or groups to work on their projects, but who wants to always work alone?

After noticing the art room seemed under-utilized, an enthusiastic group of crafty residents joined to brainstorm ways to make better use of the resource

provided by Kolter. The Cresswind Arts & Crafts Club was formed as an umbrella group that loosely connects a wide range of craft interests. The group coordinates Cresswind residents and outside teachers for classes/ workshops, schedules designated times for unstructured groups with similar interests to meet and work on projects, and provide a means to display completed projects.

Fall Arts & Crafts

The club, which now has 130 members, provides a way for crafty people to connect with others who share their interests while engaging community members to learn and grow together through arts & crafts activities.

Since launching, a variety of classes have been offered so novices can explore their creative side or someone can rekindle an old hobby. So far, the group has provided classes or workshops to learn about water color and acrylic painting, acrylic pour painting, tile mosaics, jewelry making, knitting, custom sign painting, rock painting, card making, and basic pottery skills.

Recently, some community members volunteered to share their expertise with bow-making classes and holiday decorating. The “Sew Crafty” group meets weekly for participants to work on individual projects involving

needlecraft (sewing, knitting, crochet, etc.) while they chat and become acquainted. A weekly guided painting class led by a resident artist and a Paint-by-Numbers group meets to socialize while working on individual projects. The paint by number group meets in the evening and will soon expand to include people working on any type-painting project.

In December, the members hosted a “Pop-Up Artists Show” where the community could purchase some of the creative wares created by talented artists across several mediums.

Monthly Arts & Crafts Club meetings offer a simple “Makeand-Take” craft project while sharing recently completed projects and seeking ideas from the membership about crafts and classes they would like to see offered. to bring in an instructor. Although many classes are free, some classes require a fee to cover materials and the instructor’s time and travel.

At a recent community event, the Arts & Crafts Club launched an ongoing community art project where residents painted craft sticks with any design. After enough sticks are completed during future gatherings, they will be assembled into a group artwork.

Whether your interest lies with needlecraft, painting, photography, jewelry making, pottery, or any other craft you bring to table, you will likely find someone living in Cresswind who shares your passion – or is at least interested in learning about it.
