We have made it halfway through 2021 and it seems life has continued to improve. The outdoor concerts have resumed and I have one scheduled almost every weekend, including the rescheduled Cherry Cherry concert for June 12th. We will have the rented tables and chairs, so I anticipate seeing our lawn filled with Cresswind residents. We also have Liverpool Legends back on the schedule for September 24th.

The Cinco De Mayo party was a hit! Blending the margarita mix for the residents was so enjoyable and hearing laughter in the clubhouse was even better. Thank you to everyone who came to such a festive event and many thanks to the residents who helped decorate and kept the margarita machines running.

This year we are creating our first Cresswind teams for the Dragon Boat Races. We will have a competitive team and a social team. With the practices and the race day on Lake Peachtree in September, it will be a fun event with lots of camaraderie. Look for more information further in this edition.

KLEIN’S CRUSADERS CRESSWIND PEACHTREE CITY

n a beautiful October morning, in the middle of a worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, 125 Cresswind residents met at the clubhouse parking lot, and observing CDC guidelines for safety, walked several miles around the CW neighborhood, in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. Our local DJ, Rick Sauer, provided upbeat music while Mark and Sue Summers filmed drone coverage of the event. Neighbors stepped outside to wave at the walkers and several furry friends who kept pace. It was an amazing assembly of neighbors who had pledged funds in memory of or to support a loved one affected by dementia. The nationwide Walk that takes place every October in towns all over the US had been cancelled. The administrators of the Walk challenged teams to come up with creative ways to raise funds and walk with our own teams. For several months prior, our team, Klein’s Crusaders – Cresswind PTC, had steadily led the Southern Crescent in donations and registered the largest number of walkers. In September we raised funds at a fabulous outdoor concert, presented for free by the PTC Jazz

Edition at the CW pavilion. Over two hundred and fifty residents attended and donations were very generous. I was truly overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm from the Cresswind PTC community.

Why We Walk As I reflect on how this team evolved, I have to go back to my first visit to Cresswind, a new 55+ community under construction close to my home. Nineteen years earlier, my husband Rich and I had moved to Peachtree City and loved everything about the family orientated town, including wonderful neighbors, excellent schools, a Lutheran church with a large youth group, sports opportunities and, of course, the bonus of a golf cart. Now, on a wintry late afternoon two days after Christmas in 2016, I was leaving Somerby Memory Care where my husband Rich had been residing since January 2015. We had received the dreaded diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease in 2008, and it turned our world upside down. We have three beloved sons and our lives were full of sports, travel, vacations

and we had so much to look forward to. After Rich’s diagnosis, we knew that our time was limited and after thorough research, we sadly planned for the inevitable stages of decline and certain death.˜ Alzheimer’s Disease is a devastating disease that affects the entire family.˜ Rich was diagnosed by the head of Emory Brain Health Center, Dr. Allan Levey, and for the next six years, we met with him every six months for a full day of tests and evaluation. Rich’s diagnosis forced him into early retirement and as he grieved the loss of the career he enjoyed so much, hearing the diagnosis was somewhat a relief to him. He had worked as an Administrative Law Judge for the Merit Protection Agency, US Govt. for most of his career and mentored many young lawyers over the years. He had a Master’s of Divinity along with a Juris Doctorate and received exemplary evaluations from his bosses in Washington DC.˜ He knew something was wrong but Dr. Levey told us he was smart enough to hide his symptoms until he was exhausted and couldn’t conceal his memory conflicts. He had no family history of Alzheimer’s Disease. Rich was an excellent golfer and continued to play with very close buddies who didn’t mind too much when he picked up the wrong balls. He could navigate the five-minute route to the course until one day he returned home not realizing he had the wrong golf cart.˜ After six years of caring for him in our home, I was encouraged to move him to a Memory Care facility – the hardest thing I ever had to do. It was time and my role as an overwhelmed caregiver would become that of his wife again.˜ I felt both guilt and Continued on page 6

relief after he settled into Somerby.

Our sons and their families, relatives and friends were steady visitors to see our beloved husband and father for 27 months.

Rich was steadily declining from his illness and my frequent visits to Somerby left me mentally depleted.

I had heard rumors about Cresswind and knew friends who were seriously looking. As I headed home from Somerby that wintry afternoon, on a whim, I decided to drive through Cresswind for a quick peek. There was one car in the Sales Office parking lot and I hoped it wasn’t too late to pick up a brochure and head home.

A friendly face greeted me, answered a few questions and invited me to tour the models. As I walked through the Ashford, I had a feeling that this could be my future home. I quickly toured a few more models, aware that

it was closing time, but I took lots of pictures and was excited. For several years, I was hesitant and unable to think about my future as a widow. At Somerby I had met several wives who were “in my shoes” and we formed a support group. We shared our grief, fears and coping methods, but we did not speak of the future.

A few days later, after spending hours plotting my options, I returned to view the models again. I had spoken to my adult children and family about this opportunity, and as always, they were very supportive and encouraged me to move forward. After a few weeks of deciding on a lot, Rich was reaching the final stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. I made the decision to hold off purchasing in Phase 1 and put my name on the wait list for Phase 2. In mid-March, Rich fell and his injuries were severe. A week later, on

March 20th, the first day of Spring, he passed away with our family and Pastor surrounding him reciting his favorite prayers.

In May, I was ready to pursue my future home at Cresswind. I sold my home and moved in with my oldest son and his family for ten months during construction. I spent many days driving around my future neighborhood and would often stop to talk to residents. Each conversation was so positive and complimentary about the neighborhood that I knew I had made the right decision.

Honoring our loved ones who have or had Alzheimer’s Disease is important, along with the need to continue raising funds for research and a cure. I never dreamed I would be called to an

LIFESTYLE at a glance advocacy role. In 2018 I attended the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement at their Advocacy Forum in Washington DC. There were meetings to attend and a trip to Capitol Hill to ask politicians for their support for bills to fund research.

It was incredible to see representatives from all 50 states working together. This year the US Senate Appropriations committee has proposed a $354 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the 2021 fiscal year budget. If this increase is signed into law, annual funding will reach more than $3 billion.

Back home in PTC, there were opportunities to speak at clubs and organizations that were eager to know how they could create a Walk Team and or donate to ALZ Disease. I didn’t realize that my story and experience had so much value, especially for women going through the same diagnosis with their husbands. It is rewarding to share information and helpful advice I have learned about ALZ, including that of being a caretaker and when to make the important decision about using a Memory Care facility.

Klein’s Crusaders + Cresswind PTC = Success!

The 2020 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease team, Klein’s Crusaders – Cresswind PTC, exceeded my wildest dreams!

We came in first place in fund raising and number of participants walking that day. Unfortunately, the cure is still in the future and fundraising is ongoing.

This year the 2021 Southern Crescent Annual Walk is planning to return to The Fred where it had taken place for 20 years until last year. While final plans are not confirmed, the Klein’s Crusaders – Cresswind PTC team will keep our Walk in the CW neighborhood. We hope to increase the number of walkers and our fundraising efforts from last year. The Walk will be on Saturday, October 2nd at 9:00 am and will commence in the CW parking lot. We will walk through all five Phases – as construction permits, and hope everyone will join us or step outside that morning and cheer us on. The participant page for our team is posted and we encourage everyone to visit it and consider a donation. Any amount is gratefully and happily accepted! There will be informational emails going out this summer and we are tentatively planning another concert in September.

wishes. At Dr. Levey’s request, his brain and spinal cord were donated to Emory Brain Health Center and we were told that the tissues, along with six years of testing, were invaluable to their research.

here is a NEW fun, and friendship building activity coming to Cresswind! If you like boats, outdoor exercise, and lakes, then you have a unique opportunity to participate in a Cresswind/Whippoorwill sponsored Dragon Boat at a reduced cost. No experience needed!

The teams will enjoy practice sessions throughout the summer, at no additional cost, on Lake Peachtree as scheduled by the Rotary Club. The purpose of the practice sessions is to build teamwork and to teach the participants the basic skills to enable the team to be

The Rotary Club’s International Dragon Boat Festival will be at Drake Field, Lake Peachtree on September 25, 2021. On race day our teams will be competing in the “Open Class –Over 55 years old”. This is a new racing category for the Peachtree City race – especially introduced for Cresswind and other similar communities, and people.
