INTO THE WATER

COAL RIVER COUNTRY

Just a short drive f rom the Capital City is what locals call Coal River Country. This area is known for flatwater kayaking and is home to the Tour de Coal. The largest flatwater kayak event in the U.S., the Tour de Coal is an 11-mile float f rom Tornado to St. Albans that draws more than 2,000 paddlers a year.

Participants have traveled f rom as far away as Australia to attend. The Tour de Coal takes place every June and is complemented with Yakfest at Olde Main Plaza in St. Albans. This popular two-day festival features live music, food, and specialty vendors.

Want to avoid the crowd and do the float alone or with a small group? The Coal River Group rents single and tandem kayaks and paddle boards.

Fishing is also a great way to enjoy the Coal River. Small-mouth bass, white bass, muskie and walleye are among the typical catches along with more unusual species like gar.

The newest addition to Coal River Country is the Tornado Single Trax Trail System. Part of the Hatf ieldMcCoy Trails, this network of trails is roughly 35 miles and open to dirt bikes and e-bikes. Permits, merchandise, restrooms and area information are available at the Coal River Group Welcome Center, 9 am to 5 pm.

Kanawha State Forest:

Offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the outdoors right within the city. With approximately 57 miles of trails, it’s perfect for hikers of every level. Additionally, the forest features 46 well-maintained campsites, making it an ideal spot for immersing yourself in nature. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, Kanawha State Forest promises a refreshing escape into the great outdoors.

Coonskin Park:

This park features 14 scenic trails perfect for a relaxing walk in nature. Discover the famous Grotto where you can admire a stunning hidden waterfall. Start at the stone monument at the trailhead, take a left onto the Alice Knight Memorial Trail, and follow the red blazes for approximately a third of a mile until you reach this remarkable structure.

Sunrise Carriage Trail:

This trail is a meandering 0.65 mile gravel trail which rises gently through a beautiful forest above Charleston. At the top you will find a beautiful overlook of the city.

Little Creek Park:

Explore picturesque Little Creek Park and enjoy its stunning natural beauty as seasons change from April through October. Numerous hiking trails cater to everyone, from beginners seeking a leisurely stroll to adventurous explorers tackling the longer, more thrilling paths.

Chef Chase Collier

The menu pays homage to Chatfield’s heritage through recipes that have been handed down for generations Chef Chase Collier adds his influence in modern Appalachian cuisine, promising a memorable meal, rich in tradition and flavor Chef Collier was born and raised in Southwest Virginia in the coalfields of Wise County He grew up in a family of strong matriarchs, who shared their love through cooking. Sunday family dinners were always highlighted by Appalachian inspired dishes. His parents were foodies before the term was coined, and made sure to introduce him to other cultures through their food

Ristorante Abruzzi tells the tale of two places that owner Mark Chatfield considers home: West Virginia and Italy.

Chef Chase started working in the restaurant industry at age 14 waiting tables After graduating high school and attending college, Chef found his passion in the kitchen Chef Chase became an apprentice learning classical French cooking techniques, and he served as the sous chef at the Block Restaurant and Wine Cellar on Capitol Street for three years While serving as Executive Chef at Abruzzi, Chef Chase has led his team to multiple awards at Taste of All 2022, including Best Appetizer, Judges’ Choice Award, and the Craig Casto Best Newcomer Award.

In 2025, Chef Chase was honored as a semi-finalist for the James Beard Award Best Chef in the Southeast Chef is active in the community and has participated in charitable events such as FeastivAll Chef believes strongly in using the freshest local ingredients to deliver his own unique Appalachian influenced take on Italian.

Chef Paul Smith

Charleston’s food scene is booming, and Chef Paul Smith is one of its brightest stars. Smith, a native West Virginian who grew up cooking Sunday dinners with his grandfather, graduated with honors from NY’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America. He studied pastries and wine at CIA’s Greystone campus in Napa Valley, CA, where he graduated as Valedictorian. Smith worked at the Ritz Carlton Resort and The Windsor Club in FL, and the Biltmore Estate in NC Then he brought all his knowledge, experience and passion back to Charleston.

In 2023, Smith’s work at 1010 Bridge drew attention from the James Beard Foundation, which nominated him for the Best Chef: Southeast Award. The following year, Smith was not only nominated for a second time in the same category, but he also won the award! In his acceptance speech, Smith paid homage to his home state saying, “Two words that have never been mentioned here before: West Virginia” With a more casual menu and atmosphere, The Pitch Sports Bar & Grill is another of Smith’s restaurants. Follow the game from the bar and keep your craft beer at the right temperature on the cooling ring. Sample local favorites like a footlong hand-dipped corndog called the General Cornwallis, a West Virginia Boomstick hotdog with chili and slaw, or a Detroit-style pizza.

Smith was named a Distinguished West Virginian in 2024 for his awardwinning talent, leadership, and mentoring within the culinary industry. He often says “a rising tide will lift all boats,” and has served as an advisor to multiple food and hospitality businesses throughout the state.

Established in 1917, Nitro is a living memorial to WWI. Learn about the city’s heritage in the Nitro History and Wars Museum. The museum features a large collection of memorabilia and artifacts from military conflicts involving the United States.

South Charleston is often viewed as the “Mayberry” of the Kanawha Valley because of its vibrant downtown surrounded by quiet neighborhoods and plenty of room to run and play at Little Creek Park. This small town is home to locally owned restaurants serving world cuisine from Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East, all, of course, with a side of Appalachian hospitality.

The antique mall will bring back memories of childhood and beyond. Little Creek Park offers multiple trails for hiking and mountain biking and the only lighted Soap Box Derby Track in the area. Be sure to stop for the world famous, Spring Hill Hotdog. We highly recommend adding the chocolate drizzle!

St. Albans may appear to be a sleepy little town at first glance, but this city is always bubbling with activity Bordered by both the Kanawha and Coal rivers, St. Albans is perfectly situated for outdoor recreation. The Tour de Coal, an annual community kayak float, and the associated two-day Yak Fest, fill the river and Olde Main Plaza each June with aquatic enthusiasts and locals alike.

Olde Main Plaza is the city’s unofficial “town square,” featuring local hangouts like Drummy's and The Cafe along with the Alban Arts Center. Spend an afternoon exploring antiques, home furnishings, and specialty shops, and be sure to stop for a locally brewed coffee or handmade ice cream

For a different perspective on St. Albans, drive up the mountain – all the way to the top – to City Park.

This hub for outdoor activities includes hiking and biking trails, baseball and softball fields, picnic shelters, swimming pool, dog park, and disc golf course. City Park also is home to the Festival of Lights, an annual holiday drive-thru lights display that gets bigger and brighter every year.
