COLONIAL LAKE REVITALIZATION Over the course of 10 months, the Conservancy and the community came together to execute the revitalization of nearly three acres of gardens surrounding Colonial Lake. Over 600 volunteers spent 1,200 hours alongside Conservancy staff to plant 14,000 new plants, pull weeds, water and more to have the garden ready for the community to celebrate its completion at Bloom Charleston on October 17 and 18. The Beach Company has underwritten ongoing maintenance through a sustaining sponsorship.

CREATING PARKS THAT NOURISH COMMUNITY In October 2025, the Conservancy opened the Ashleyville-Maryville Food Forest, a neighborhood-led initiative to expand on the Mulberry Food Forest in Ardmore. The ⅓-acre abandoned lot now contains 30 varieties of edible plants, from large persimmon and fig trees to shiitake mushroom logs and herbs. Located on the West Ashley Bikeway, the forest is available for all to harvest and includes a harvest hub education center with instructions and tools for harvest and a picnic table for gathering.

EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCES The only thing better than a park is a park with people in it.

Our largest Teddy Bear Picnic to date, Music in the Parks with free ice cream, year round educational and social walking series and Bloom Charleston brought thousands of residents together in our parks during the year. In total, the Conservancy hosted more than 120 hours of events across the city. 80% of our events were free to the public with the remaining 20% charging just enough to cover costs.

CONSERVANCY STEWARDS Charleston’s parks thrive because of the dedication of volunteers. In 2025, 951 volunteers contributed 5,000+ hours, generating over $163,000 in impact. The Conservancy rebranded and revitalized its core volunteer program as the Conservancy Stewards to reflect the vital role they play in managing our city’s park gardens. Conservancy Stewards not only spend time together in the parks but also build community through field trips, quarterly meetings, and more. Over 60 local companies joined us throughout the year for corporate volunteer days.

LEADERSHIP AND VISION Dear Friends, Charleston’s parks are evolving, and 2025 marked a meaningful moment of reflection and refinement for the Charleston Parks Conservancy.

As we look ahead to our 20th anniversary, this past year has been one of focus and review—an opportunity to take stock of all we have accomplished and to consider where we can sharpen our impact, recommit to our strengths, and deliver excellence in all we do. It has been a year of thoughtful reflection, a return to our core roots, and a renewed clarity about the role we play in Charleston’s city parks.

To guide this work, we partnered with Diana Permar, whose leadership as a corporate strategist—and deep love for Charleston’s parks—helped us listen carefully to our donors, volunteers, and both former and current staff. Through this process of reflection and input, a clear path emerged. The result is a refined mission that will guide us forward: to cultivate exceptional public gardens and experiences in Charleston’s city parks.

This clarity is already shaping how we invest our resources, prioritize projects, and measure success. It is further strengthened by the arrival of new leadership, including Executive Director Jason Kronsberg from the City of Charleston, and by an incredibly engaged and committed Board of Directors who continue to provide thoughtful guidance and momentum.

One of the past year’s most significant projects was the Colonial Lake Revitalization. In collaboration with renowned designer and horticulturalist Molly Hendry, we transformed Colonial Lake into a breathtaking, community-centered garden that blends beauty, function, and resiliency. Just as this renovation marks the beginning of a new era for this vibrant space, our mission realignment and leadership evolution signal a new chapter for the Conservancy—one that will deepen our stewardship of Charleston’s city parks and continue to build pride and enjoyment for all.

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends and Supporters,

As I step into the role of Executive Director of the Charleston Parks Conservancy, I do so with a deep appreciation for the remarkable foundation built by our board, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners over the past two decades.

Throughout 2025, I witnessed firsthand the impact of our collective work and incredible support of our community. From the flourishing gardens at Colonial Lake to the establishment of the Ashleyville-Maryville Food Forest to community celebrations like our expanding music-in-the-parks series, these accomplishments reflect what is possible when a community comes together to care for its shared spaces.

Charleston's parks are among our city's greatest assets. They are places of beauty, connection, recreation, and reflection. They enrich our daily lives, strengthen neighborhoods, and create opportunities for people of all ages to engage with nature and one another.

As we move forward with our new mission, to cultivate exceptional public gardens and experiences in Charleston's city parks, we are committed to building on this momentum. We will continue to work alongside our community and the City to invest in vibrant public gardens, including upcoming major renovations at Allan Park and Hazel Parker Playground, meaningful programming, innovative volunteer engagement and partnerships that ensure our parks remain welcoming and inspiring for all.
