Student Philanthropists In May, CDS third graders presented a donation of $1,600 to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Each year, CDS third graders participate in their annual Read-a-Thon in which friends and family sponsor the students to read over the course of a week. In the 2020-2021 school year, they raised over $12,000, benefitting eight charities! The students were all-ears listening to the representatives from @musckids.

From the Head of School Dear Charleston Day School Families,

t was a clear, very warm day in Charleston when our eighth-grade class boarded a trolley to head to the 2021 graduation ceremony which was held at the Sottile Theatre. Although the venue was new, the traditions remained the same. The seventh-grade banner bearer and honor marshals led the group in, each graduate was celebrated individually with a short narrative composed just for them, and friends and family proudly watched as another class of Scorpions moved from being students to being alumni. Their alumni bricks were safely nestled in the alumni walk, officially welcoming them to the next level of their relationship with Charleston Day School. There were tears of joy and jubilation – all among what was the most challenging school year that our community has ever faced. And like the graduation ceremony, our school community faced the challenge of COVID with grace, determination, resilience and a dash of good humor.

Over the past 18 months, our community came together in ways that we couldn’t have imagined. Recently, when I spoke to all of the students at our opening assembly of 2021-22, I talked about the mission of our school: to foster scholarship, integrity, respect and responsibility in our students. I shared that the mission is our North Star – it informs every decision that we make at Charleston Day School. It is also more than just a string of words. It is a roadmap for how we come together as a community. The very fabric of our community rests on the strength of the connections that we make both inside and outside of the gates at 15 Archdale Street. And the past months have proven that our community is Scorpion strong. In this issue of The Gateway, we celebrate our graduates and our alumni. We take a peek into the school’s stellar world language program, and we highlight the generosity of our entire community in the 2020-21 Annual Report. All in all, this issue is a testament to the strength and resilience of our school community, and a reminder that the fabric of that community is woven tightly with connections from our oldest alumni to our youngest students. A Whole New World CDS World Language Program Prepares Engaged Global Citizens Proficiency in a second language is an essential life skill in our increasingly global world. Charleston Day School’s World Language program focuses on developing global citizens who are adept at problem solving and communicating in a constantly evolving society. Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through fourth grade, students are exposed to both French and Spanish before they select between the two for study from fifth through eighth grade. “When you learn a foreign language, you not only learn the language. You learn about the culture and the cultural differences. You learn about the food, the traditions, the idiomatic expressions they use, their way of life. When you learn about another culture and when you travel to another culture, you gain knowledge and empathy for a group of people that is different from you. You learn that your way is not the only way. “At CDS, we not only focus on language acquisition. We try to expose our students to the different cultures by talking about food, by listening and watching popular songs, and by talking about current events that touch the different countries we study. Our goal is that our students will one day be able to visit these countries and feel prepared to face the language challenges but also be able to “function” and enjoy their experience to the fullest.” — Brigitte Morin, 5-8 French teacher

Lower School Charleston Day Kindergarten students are exposed to French and Spanish through stories and songs to create a strong connection. Students celebrate and explore cultures as well as the major French and Spanish holidays. By the time students reach fourth grade, they are comfortable holding basic conversations and have a solid foundation to enter the language of their choice for the remainder of their CDS experience. “In elementary school we focus on geography and culture to connect French and Spanish to actual places and people. It’s like opening a door and stepping into a slightly different world with slightly different rules. It allows us not to just make assumptions, but to stay open to other possibilities. 4

“Each year in fourth grade we engage in a pen pal project with an English class at a school in Paris. Students write letters to one another, make videos introducing themselves in French and English and talk about things they enjoy.” — Marietta Julliard, K-4 Spanish and French teacher

Middle School From fifth to eighth grade, students strive for grammar proficiency in the pursuit of fluency in their language of choice. Because students are exposed to French or Spanish cultures and actively engaged in speaking the language, the classroom experience is vibrant and motivating. Students dive into grammar and explore not only conversational but grammatical concepts, allowing them to become proficient in their written language. This proficiency level approach to World Language study in the Middle School produces confident graduates who are ready to successfully enter their High School language programs. When students graduate from Charleston Day, they have earned two high school credits of French or of Spanish. “We strive to make our classrooms a safe place for students to practice speaking foreign languages without fear of making mistakes. Students are encouraged to interact in the target language by sharing their thoughts, ideas and opinions. Our goal at CDS is meaningful communication that instills confidence for students to be able to use the target language in real world settings. The CDS Spanish curriculum takes a look at the similarities and differences among the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. One of the highlights for students is choosing to research one of these countries, creating a display board and preparing the national dish to share at foreign language night with parents and family.” — Michael Catlett, 5-8 Spanish teacher

National Awards Each spring, students in grades 5-8 take either the National Spanish Exam or the National French Exam. We are extremely proud of our students, who, on average, place above the 90th percentile on these National tests, bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals.

Research Research proves that exposure to different languages at a young age opens the mind to different cultures and ways of life. Research also proves learning a second language encourages problem-solving, critical thinking and listening skills, in addition to improving memory, concentration and the ability to multitask. Children exposed to World Language in the early grades show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility. Charleston Day School is committed to language education during the early years in order to foster early engagement with world languages and cultures. This program has been designed with four areas: listening, reading, writing and spelling. It provides exposure to the cultures of the languages and sets students up for success in the language of their choice by the time they graduate from CDS.

ood morning students, faculty, family and friends. First of all, I wish to give an enormous thank you to the amazing CDS faculty and staff for making this year possible. Secondly, I would like to thank all of the students, faculty, family and friends who have come to congratulate the Charleston Day School class of 2021 on their graduation. These past couple of years have been extremely challenging and strenuous, but my hope is that soon we will be able to get back to our normal lives.

not only just known each other, but we’ve befriended each other. And the friendships that we made eight years ago have only continued to grow. Over the past eight years our class has witnessed the arrival of a number of new students. Talmage came in second; MacKenzie in fourth; Danny, Barry and Mac in fifth; as well as Ben and Henry along with Jonah, Reagan and Fletcher in sixth. Even though we’ve only known some of our classmates for two years, it feels as if we’ve known them since we were babies.

When the pandemic hit the U.S. early last March and nearly the entire country had to shut down, most of us were shocked. The virus came out of nowhere and left the nation in shambles, forcing schools across the country to go virtual. Zoom was an interesting experience, to say the least, given the fact that most of us had no idea of what to expect.

Awards & Accolades Head of School’s Award: Spencer Pierce Steele Edgerton Established in 1998 by Gregory J. O’Melia and Edgar S. Jaycocks, this prize recognizes a member of the graduating class who has exhibited a genuine love of learning through commitment and hard work at Charleston Day School. This award underscores the belief that true academic scholarship should be judged not only by one’s grade point average, but also by the student’s diligence, effort and sincere desire to learn. Faculty Award: Reagan Abigail Hannus This award is given to the student in eighth grade who, in the faculty’s opinion, best exemplifies the ideals of good manners, neatness in appearance and work, and good character. The Archdale Achievement Award: Grace Abigail Griffin This award is given for outstanding academic achievement in all areas, and for willingness to serve others. Esprit de Corps Award: John Treadwell Josey, Jr. This award, established in 1996, recognizes the eighth grader who epitomizes devotion to and enthusiasm for the common spirit of the entire student body. The Gordon Scott Gillespie Prize: William Edward Applegate V Established by Mrs. Gillespie and her daughter Brook, this award is in memory of Brook’s father, who died while she was an eighth grader. In a year in which it is given, it is awarded to the student who shows special interest and a desire to delve deeper than is required into his or her schoolwork and projects. The Thomas W. Alexander Creativity Award: Lula Robyn Galván The Thomas W. Alexander Creativity Award was established in 2003 by the family and friends of Tom Alexander, a successful advertising executive and proud CDS alumnus, parent and grandparent. This award is given to a student in eighth grade who best demonstrates creativity in his/her life, schoolwork or hobbies. The Josephine Little Townsend Award: William Digges Walldorf This award was established in memory of Jody Townsend after her death, during her fifth grade year at Charleston Day School. Recipients should display intelligence, love of reading, well-roundedness, ability to get along with others, optimism, and should be a top student in his or her class. It is awarded only to fifth graders.

Fourth Grade Award: William Evans Martin IV Established in honor of Noel Kunes, this prize recognizes a student’s effort, attitude and positive relationships with his or her peers. The Braveheart Award This award was established by the Class of 1996. It recognizes students whose strong work ethic, optimism and strength of character best exemplify the spirit of Charleston Day School. Grades 1-4: Greyson Edward Reeves Grades 5-8: Margaret Waring Cantey The Brendan O’Shea Citizenship Award: Emmaline Winn Burnett Established in honor of Brendan O’Shea, whose 13-year tenure as Head of School was marked by a culture of civility, this award recognizes a student who has demonstrated service, leadership, responsibility, character and discipline. French Society Award: Mary Perrin O’Kelley Presented by the French Society of South Carolina to the student who demonstrates excellence in the French language and interest in promoting French culture. The Julia Mayrant Rees Simonds Award: Spencer Pierce Steele Edgerton Established in 1999, in memory of Julie Simonds, Class of 1987, this award is presented to the student who embodies a spirit of openness and a desire to learn more about France, its language and its people. Spanish Award: Caiden Elizabeth Sumner Presented to the student who demonstrates excellence in the Spanish language and interest in promoting Spanish culture. English Award: Spencer Pierce Steele Edgerton Established in 1998 to recognize particular excellence in English. The Harriet C. Wilson Award: William Norvell Hughes Established in 1995 by an alumna of Charleston Day School, this award honors Miss Wilson’s contributions to our community as a history teacher. Her standards were very high, but she was always able to inspire a sense of selfconfidence in those with whom she worked. presented to an eighth grader who exhibits the enthusiasm, the interest and the potential to become a genuine scholar in the study of history. Justine Finch Math Award: Reagan Abigail Hannus Established in 1998 as the Math Award, this award was renamed in 2014 to the Justine Finch Math Award and is presented to the student who displays excellence in mathematics as well as a desire to achieve at the highest level. The award is named in honor of Mrs. Finch, who taught math at Charleston Day for 26 years, from 1988-2014. Her exacting standards coupled with her expectation that each individual student perform to his or her highest capability helped establish Charleston Day’s math program as the best in the area. Countless students benefitted from her emphasis on organization, checking work, daily preparation and review, as well as her high expectations for each child. Science Award: John Treadwell Josey, Jr. Established in 1998 to recognize particular excellence in science. John Winthrop History Award: John Lawrence Catlett-Fernandez Established in 2013 by the generosity of Mr. John Winthrop of Charleston. Each year the award is given to a seventh grader who is distinguished in the study of history of our country and the world. Marcia E. West Technology Award: Thomas Gaillard Hershey Established in 1998 to recognize particular excellence in computers. Audrey Elizabeth Grice Art Award: Lula Robyn Galván This award was established in 2002 in memory of Audrey Grice, member of the Class of 2006. Audrey was an exceptional art student, whose energetic spirit and love for life were reflected in her work. This award recognizes particular excellence in art. Music Award: Emmaline Winn Burnett Established in 1983 to recognize especially noteworthy achievement in music. Athletic Director’s Award: Oliver Gates McCants Established in 2003, the Physical Education Award recognizes a student who exemplifies good sportsmanship, enthusiasm for all activities, honesty, cooperation with others, and a positive attitude. Athlete of the Year Award: Robert Lee Grubb IV Awarded to an accomplished athlete of strong character 12

In 1939, she merged her school with the Day School, and taught there until 1945. It is awarded to the eighth grader with the highest cumulative academic average over the past three years. This new challenge brought with it a unique opportunity—offering digital art with Adobe Photoshop to the seventh and eighth grades while students in grades K-6 practiced traditional visual arts. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Sarah-Hamlin Hastings ’87 1. You opened Fritz Porter Design Collective in Charleston in 2015. How did the concept originate? Has the business changed over time? We had just moved back to Charleston from Connecticut, and I was in the process of renovating our house when I came to the realization that there were very limited resources in Charleston for interior designers and retail customers looking to decorate their homes. After living in the New York City area for so many years, it was unfathomable to me that I had to drive six hours to Atlanta to source fabrics and custom furniture. So I decided to open a design showroom that was open to design trade professionals but also available to retail customers. We created a sort of hybrid business model that was one part home accessories and antiques, one part custom furniture, fabric and wallpaper, and finally one part design services to help customers bring it all together. We have tweaked the business model along the way based on sales and customer feedback, but the core concept has remained consistent— providing a place to find top quality unique pieces for your home with the highest customer service.

In my case, I went to New York for a job right after I graduated from Va n d e r b i l t University in 1995 and met Matt, who is now my husband. We ended up staying in the NYC area for over 15 years. I worked as an editorial assistant at Elle Photo Credit: Gateley Williams Decor magazine before finding my way into the interior design business. I worked for Cullman and Kravis in New York, Stiles Colwill in Baltimore and John Rosselli in New York before going out on my own. In 2010, Matt and I decided that we wanted to raise our children closer to family, so we moved back to Charleston. 3. When you were a student at Charleston Day School, what do you remember most? Were there teachers and/or events that helped shape you into who you are today? Were you interested then in art, antiques and design?

How did you find your way back to Charleston? Like many things, I didn’t appreciate how wonderful it was to grow up in a place like Charleston until I left many years later. It was an idyllic childhood spent hanging out at Hazel Parker Playground, crabbing off the dock at my grandparents house on Shem Creek, meeting up with friends at “The Gorm” in the Market and riding our bikes all over town (including to school every day, rain or shine!). Charleston Day was, and still is, such a special place to go to school—the small classes, the amazing teachers, and the fact that you are smack in the middle of the city make it a really unique place to learn and grow. I am still in touch with almost everyone from my CDS class, and many of them, like me, moved away after college and then eventually found our way back to Charleston. 14

I loved riding my bike to school with friends from my neighborhood, getting really proficient at Tetherball and Four Square during recess, learning to use my height to my advantage on the basketball court with Coach Harrington, and being empowered by the faculty to put together something as important as the yearbook in eighth grade. One of the most memorable things from my time at CDS was moving from the State Street location to the current location on Archdale Street my eighth grade year. We buried a time capsule on the campus to document the occasion that I hope to be around to open one day. I was also given the opportunity in the eighth grade (along with a few classmates) to “design and decorate” our Senior Lounge. I don’t think the end result wasn’t anything earth shattering, but it was so cool to be entrusted to do something like that. All of these things seem so ordinary, but they had a huge impact on me at the time. Being given these unique opportunities helped instill a confidence that I could do anything I put my mind to. 4. What qualities did you develop during your time at Charleston Day School that have benefitted you as an entrepreneur?

I think one of the most important things I learned from my time at CDS was how to be an effective writer from our beloved fifth grade teacher Dottie Rhett. She had the perfect balance of pushing you to be better but in a soft spoken and encouraging way. And even though I am not a professional writer, I have realized along the way what an important skill it is in any Fabric offerings profession. I was lucky enough to be a finalist in the very first CDS Speech Contest, and at the time we all thought it was crazy to have to get up and give a speech to the entire student body as an 11-year-old. But she showed us the way and instilled the confidence in every one of her students that they could be articulate and effective as a speaker. The ability to stand up and speak in front of a crowd, write an intelligent essay and deliver my point to someone in a clear concise manner is all from her. 5. You have also been a Charleston Day School parent. What helped to make the decision to send your children to CDS? The simple answer is I wanted our boys to have the same incredible experience I had. Though the staff, location and look of the school have changed over the years, the mission and core values are still

the same, so it was a very easy decision for us. 6. What do you do in your free time? As I have gotten older, I have learned to appreciate the simple things—spending time with Matt and our boys (Jack ’16, Charlie, Thomas ’20 and Henry ’20), volunteering at the local pet at Fritz Porter shelter, playing with my own dogs, sitting on the beach with a good book, cooking for my family, etc. But my favorite thing is to travel with family and friends. I love discovering new places—it is educational, but it also inspires my business and design work. 7. What advice would you have for a CDS student? Take advantage of the opportunities you have being at such a small school—it is a unique experience to have such a close knit community when you are young. While it can seem stifling at times (second semester of eighth grade!), it is because those teachers know you so well that they can challenge you and help you grow. 7. Last question: Red or Blue - which are you? GO BLUE!

Frances, her husband, Billy, daughters, Annie (2) and Margaret, just moved back to Charleston while Ann, her husband, Jamie, and Willa live in Alexandria, VA, at Episcopal High School. Class of 2017 Emmett DeScherer graduated from Porter Gaud and will play Baseball at Sewanee, The University of the South, this fall. Callie Harper graduated from Porter Gaud and will be on the Track and Cross Country team at Furman University this fall. Standing Stones is the debut novel by Charlie Hastings, a graduate of the Charleston County School of the Arts. He has won numerous writing awards, including several Scholastic Gold and Silver Medals, several Scholastic Honorable Mentions, and the 2017 Carl Sandburg Poetry Contest 3rd Place prize. He has also been published in Best Teen

Writing 2018. The book is a testament to the young men of our time, both to the romantic desire men have to be heroes and to the meek yet festering feeling men have to be accepted. It is a book that highlights everything wrong and the few things that are right with how young men, in particular, are brought up.

Historic Campus: The Gate House

s you stroll down Archdale Street in historic downtown Charleston, you may not even notice it. A tasteful green Charleston single house with a drive to the left flanked by a wrought iron gate. The house and the gate seem to have always been here; however, much went into renovating this property. The green house at 7 Archdale Street is called the “Gate House” on the Charleston Day School campus. A neighbor to the school used to live here and sit on his porch, waving at school children as they came and went. When he passed away, the school was offered first rights to purchase the property. The Gate House was renovated by Charleston Day and became the facility manager’s home. The gates at the drive were not originally there. In fact, they were brought over from the 1939 Charleston Day School facility on the corner of Elliott Street and Bedon’s Alley, the school’s second location run by founders Mary Stuart and Emily Tenney. It is said that these gates are originals created by legendary Charleston blacksmith Philip Simmons, each curve skillfully wrought by a master’s hands. At one point, the house was utilized as the school’s administrative office space. The Gate House now serves as the kitchen facility for Charleston Day, the place where Flik Dining Services prepare the healthy and delicious meals enjoyed by students and faculty alike. You wouldn’t know the history of these gates, the house, and the stories and years behind them just by walking past. The same can be said for almost any location in this downtown neighborhood. Being in a historic Charleston campus is a privilege and an opportunity to be a good steward and a good neighbor. Our growth over the years has been forged with careful consideration for form, function, innovation and respect for history. FALL 2021

Former Faculty Support Graduates Because Once a Scorpion... Always a Scorpion. The eighth graders walked off campus on May 24, 2021 to Tee and Hopie Parker’s residence, where they enjoyed a special surprise—their former teachers were there to support them in their final days at CDS! Former faculty and staff included above were Sabina Gilbert (5th grade), Hopie Parker (receptionist/front desk), Lisa Redden (1st grade), Katie Richardson (2rd grade) and Kerry Murphy (3rd grade). Delicious refreshments, special treats and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the day special for our newest alumni!

From the Chair, Board of Trustees Dear CDS Families, Friends and Supporters,

n behalf of Charleston Day School’s Board of Trustees, thank you for supporting CDS in its 84th year of carrying out its mission of fostering scholarship, integrity, respect, and responsibility in its students. The generosity of CDS families, friends, and supporters profoundly impacts the school in enhancing its programming. Although this past year proved to be a different year for all, generous donations allowed CDS to successfully maintain in-person learning for its students the entire school year. The Resiliency Fund was established this past year to prioritize the safety and health of the school community while continuing to develop robust critical thinking skills and support social-emotional wellness for our CDS family. With a commitment to education and a value for excellence, we celebrate the CDS faculty and staff as well as the Board of Trustees which both had 100% participation in financially supporting CDS during the 2020-2021 school year. I would like to thank J. Rutledge Young, III for serving as chair of the

Board of Trustees for the past two years. His leadership and guidance through these challenging times remained focused on creating a safe and healthy environment for the entire CDS community to maintain in-person learning while leading the school to adopt a new strategic plan. Rutledge will continue to serve on the Board of Trustees as immediate past chair for the 2021-2022 school year. I would also like to thank Sam Applegate, Eugenia Burtschy, and Virginia Lane for their years of service on the CDS Board of Trustees. The CDS Board of Trustees welcomes new Trustees this year: Marshall Austin (Matt), Kaky Grant, Joseph J. Keenan (Jay), and Zoë L. Stephens. Please find their bios in the previous pages of The Gateway. As stated, the Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan last year which includes a focus to increase the Endowment Fund to $5,000,000 by 2025. The Resiliency Fund

harleston Day School’s Resiliency Fund was implemented in July 2020 to fund the greatest needs of unforeseen, already incurred, or planned expenses related to the pandemic. This allowed Charleston Day School to continue to develop robust critical thinking skills and support social-emotional wellness to ensure the health and safety of our CDS family. Immediate concerns included additional recess equipment, iWave clean air purifiers, iPads and enhanced technology and Promethean boards for the classrooms. The Living Classroom Fund

ur school garden at 17 Archdale has always been a place of reflection and relaxation for students and staff. The COVID pandemic has forced us to think outside the box and incorporate as much outdoor space and time into the school day as possible, which includes outdoor classes. Transforming the area into a Living Classroom offers support to science, art and other subjects all school year long. Enhancements to the garden will offer the opportunity for students to learn about different cycles within an ecosystem, earn service-learning hours, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for their planet. A few specific examples to enhance the Living Classroom are: Weather Proof Benches, Rain Barrels, Bog Garden, Composting Worm Bin, Pollinator Garden and Educational Garden Signs.

One Singular Sensation A Farewell to Heidi Whaley

DS Business Manager, Heidi Whaley, finished 25 years of service to Charleston Day School before retiring in summer 2021. This year, Heidi was the inaugural winner of the Bill Gantt/Dewar Business Officer Award presented annually to a PAIS business officer who has consistently shown generous support of their time, energy, and efforts in the spirit of collaboration and collegiality within the independent school business officer community in South Carolina. It is intended to recognize an individual who contributes to the work and advancement of their fellow business officers in the state. This award exemplifies Heidi’s contributions over the past 25 years at CDS. At the faculty meeting following Commencement in May, the faculty and staff of Charleston Day honored Heidi with a surprise performance of “One Singular Sensation.” Thank you, Heidi, for your selfless service to our community for 25 years.

ich and Virginia Maxson, whose son, Gregory, graduated from CDS in 2002, donated a collection of beautiful, leather-bound, hardcover classics from the Harvard Library series to CDS in honor of Eighth Grade Language Arts and Homeroom Teacher, Mr. Andy Willits. The books will be housed in Mr. Willits’ homeroom in the hopes that he will “infuse the wisdom of these classics into the fertile minds of [his] students.” Mr. Willits was incredibly honored to receive the books and looks forward to having them available to all students to read.

harleston Day School hosted it’s second annual Alumni Giving Week April 27-30, 2021, supporting The CDS Spirit Memorial Fund. We set a goal of 100+ Donors in 100 Hours. We are grateful to our alumni who engaged classmates with challenges, matches and tons of Scorpion Spirit! We MET our goal of 100+ Donors in 100 Hours, and a new challege was offered:14 hrs for $14,000! The Class of 2005, friends and family offered to donate an additional $1000 if we reached $14,000 by midnight. And yes, we did! Our amazing Alumni and Friends raised a grand total of $15,000!

Adela Holmes Cook Spirit Fund

stablished in 2021 by the family and friends of Adela Holmes Cook in her memory, the Adela Holmes Cook Spirit Fund will annually provide a full tuition gift. Adela Cook graduated from CDS in 2005. After her tragic death in 2009, friends, family and the community joined together every April to honor her memory with a run on the beach at Sullivan’s Island- proceeds benefitted Charleston Day School and Camp Happy Days. The Run for Adela 5K was symbolic of Adela’s passion for spending time outdoors in her beloved Lowcountry. In 2019, the race commemorated ten years of fun, fundraising, healing, memories and friendships with a Grand Finale Run for Adela. The Adela Holmes Cook Spirit Fund will allow the opportunity for a student(s) to attend Charleston Day School who otherwise would not be able to attend due to their financial circumstances. Funding will be awarded annually to a recipient(s) that demonstrates financial need through the Charleston Day School financial assistance application process. The fund will be awarded based on the recommendation of the Head of School and the Director of Institutional Advancement.
