A

nn and I are excited to embark on this new adventure and eagerly anticipate meeting you all and sharing the experiences of the school year ahead.

The coming year is going to be like no other in the recent memory of Charleston Day School. For the first time in 13 years, Mr. O’Shea will not greet students and families on opening day. The inaugural Kindergarten class will join us. And, there certainly will be other changes as well, probably less significant, subtler; and some are likely to go by almost unnoticed. But change will be in the air.

The friends and family of Benjamin Allston Moore Jr. gathered to honor his memory and dedication to Charleston Day School.

At the same time, the coming school year will be like every other at Charleston Day School.

Scholarship, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility will be emphasized. Traditions will be honored.

Routines will be followed. The faces will be familiar. The teaching will be inspired and challenging.

The life lessons on character and responsibility will continue. Once underway, daily life will feel and will be much the same.

I look upon this new adventure with a similar dichotomy in mind. I have been the head of four other schools, so I am familiar with beginning anew in a new school. Though each school is unique, much in school life is the same. I know what to expect. In every school there are fairly typical events and a flow and rhythm to the year that is quite similar. The culture and character of Charleston Day School will provide a fresh perspective for me– what is highlighted and how an event is celebrated– but I will have “been there” in some sense.

On the other hand, recalling the words of Heraclitus, the 6th Century Greek philosopher, “You cannot step into the same river twice,” I know this year will be different. Stepping into Charleston Day School will be unlike any previous experience of stepping into a new school and school year.

And in that lie the excitement, eager anticipation, and the early, gentle fluttering of some butterflies.

Certainly on August 22nd when we open, those butterflies will be in full flight.

I can hardly wait.

Search Committee Update The search for the next Head of School is picking up steam after a quiet spring during which our search consultants, Linda Gibbs and Gene Bratek of RG175, have been receiving applications and many expressions of interest. Search Co-Chairs Betsy Cahill and David Maybank report that interest in the CDS position is very strong. As of mid-May there were well over thirty applications from all over the country, including California, Arizona, Ohio, and numerous Southeastern states. There has been a good mix of current Heads of School and “rising stars” in the applicant pool.

The Search Committee met with our search consultants in late June to review a sampling of the resumes and will continue its work throughout the summer. By early fall the Committee intends to have identified three or four finalists who will come to Charleston Day for a comprehensive two-day visit to campus, during which they will have the opportunity to engage with the many different CDS constituencies and have a full set of interviews and meetings.

In the meantime, on behalf of the Search Committee, we want to add our voices to the chorus of welcome for Tom and Ann Reid, as Tom formally began as the interim Head of School on July 1!

n a series of events throughout the spring, members of our community bid farewell to Brendan J. O’Shea, who has served as headmaster for the last 13 years. Each grade offered its own tribute — whether a book, a song or a piece of art.

Board Chair Caroline Holt, on behalf of the student body, presented him with a painting of a Lowcountry landscape, created by artist and Charleston Day grandparent Sally Hughes Smith.

“Under Mr. O’Shea’s leadership, the school has grown to welcome two classes of students in each grade. He’s built a new building with two science labs, a new playground and created new learning spaces and a garden,” she said during the school-wide assembly in his honor.

“But Mr. O’Shea’s most important contributions to Charleston Day aren’t new buildings or programs,” she said. “Instead it is everything that Mr. O’Shea has given of himself that will have a lasting impact on our school.”

Parents’ Council members and past presidents gathered for a luncheon to bid farewell to Brendan.

They presented him with a sweetgrass basket made by CDS Chef Roselyn filled with Charleston goodies.

During a school-wide assembly in May, students –grade by grade –offered a tribute to Brendan.

In Memoriam

F

or the second year, Charleston Day School hosted Mission Possible Day, where community leaders were invited to campus to share real-world examples of how they live our Mission of scholarship, integrity, respect and responsibility. Former Mayor Joseph P. Riley kicked off the event with the keynote address.

“If you keep the ethics that you learned at Charleston Day School close to you now and in all the years to come, you’ll be happier, to be sure, and you can work to make your world a better place,” Mr. Riley said. When asked about his proudest accomplishment, Mr. Riley referred to the unity shown by Charleston’s citizens after the tragic Emanuel AME shooting and his hope that his decades as mayor had promoted that unity.

Charleston Day School honors the memory of Bachman S. Smith III for his wise counsel and leadership to our school and the greater Charleston community. Bachman, who passed away in February, served on the school’s Board of Trustees twice, each time helping to navigate pivotal transitions in our history. He served as the Board Chair in 1982 and is seen here burning the paid mortgage at the school’s State Street location. He rejoined the Board in 2007 and was instrumental in the construction of the 12,500-square-foot Student Academic Center, which opened in 2011. His service has left a lasting legacy on our students.

Next, students heard from a 12-year-old boy, Scotty Parker, who has set a goal to bike from California to South Carolina this summer to raise money for Water Mission. Mr. Parker has already raised over $248,000, some of which came from the lemonade sales of compassionate CDS fifth graders. Later, students accepted a challenge from Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to decorate beams with caring words and pictures to be used in their Women Build event. Other organizations represented during the day were the South Carolina Aquarium, One80 Place, Palmetto Warriors, and the Center for Birds of Prey.

Through inspirational examples, students see that service is not just an activity to add to your calendar but also a way of thinking, said Community Service Coordinator Julie Tonks.

“If we have accomplished our Mission, students will want to use their passions and their gifts to make meaning in their lives. How they accomplish that personal mission will be as unique as the students themselves! The possibilities are limitless.”

Benjamin Allston Moore Jr. One of Charleston Day School’s earliest graduates and greatest champions, Benjamin Allston Moore Jr., passed away in February.

Ben played an instrumental role in establishing the school as a nonprofit corporation in 1969 and became the first chair of the Board of Trustees. He returned to campus this fall for our 80th anniversary picnic (pictured above), where he shared some of his favorite memories. His legacy is far reaching, most notably evident at the The Moore Learning House, which was transformed in 2014 into a vibrant, energetic learning space devoted to 21st century learning skills.

or the second year in a row, fourth grade students enhanced their study of U.S. geography through an alumni postcard project.

United States geography is an ongoing objective throughout the students’ academic career at Charleston Day School, but in the fourth grade, students were given the opportunity to make the information personal this past fall by contacting Charleston Day School graduates who live outside of South Carolina.

The Josephine Little Townsend Award:

This award was established in memory of Jody Townsend after her death, during her fifth grade year at Charleston Day School. Recipients should display intelligence, love of reading, well-roundedness, ability to get along with others, optimism, and should be a top student in his or her class. It is awarded only to fifth graders.

Fourth Grade Award:

Established in honor of Noel Kunes, this prize recognizes a student’s effort, attitude and positive relationships with his or her peers.

The Braveheart Award, Grades 1-4: Headmaster’s Award:

Established in 1998 by Gregory J. O’Melia and Edgar S. Jaycocks, this prize recognizes a member of the graduating class who has exhibited a genuine love of learning through commitment and hard work at Charleston Day School. This award underscores the belief that true academic scholarship should be judged not only by one’s grade point average, but also by the student’s diligence, effort and desire to learn.

Faculty Award:

This award is given to the student in grades 6 - 8 who, in the faculty’s opinion, best exemplifies the ideals of good manners, neatness in appearance and work, and good character. This award does not need to be given every year – instead, it should only be given to a student who truly shows these qualifications.

This award is given for outstanding academic achievement in all areas, and for willingness to serve others.

The Gordon Scott Gillespie Prize:

Established by Mrs. Gillespie and her daughter Brook, this award is in memory of Brook’s father, who died while she was an eighth grader. In a year in which it is given, it is awarded to the student who shows special interest and a desire to delve deeper than is required into his or her schoolwork and projects.

The Thomas W. Alexander Creativity Award:

The Thomas W. Alexander Creativity Award was established in 2003 by the family and friends of Tom Alexander, a successful advertising executive and proud CDS alumnus, parent and grandparent. This award is given to a student in grades 6 - 8 who best demonstrates creativity in his/her life, schoolwork or hobbies.

The Julia Mayrant Rees Simonds Award:

Established in 1999, in memory of Julie Simonds, Class of 1987, this award is presented to the student who embodies a spirit of openness and a desire to learn more about France, its language and its people.

Presented to the student who demonstrates excellence in the Spanish language and interest in promoting Spanish culture.

English Award:

Established in 1998 to recognize particular excellence in English.

The Harriet C. Wilson Award:

Established in 1995 by an alumna of Charleston Day School, this award honors Miss Wilson’s contributions to our community as a history teacher. Her standards were very high, but she was always able to inspire a sense of self-confidence in those with whom she worked. She strove to make the past come alive for her students, and she imbued them with a love of history. To reflect her spirit, this award is presented to an eighth grader who exhibits the enthusiasm, the interest, and the potential to become a genuine scholar in the study of history.

Justine Finch Math Award:

Established in 1998 as the Math Award, this award was renamed in 2014 to the Justine Finch Math Award and is presented to the student who displays excellence in mathematics as well as a desire to achieve at the highest level. The award is named in honor of Mrs. Finch, who taught math at Charleston Day for 26 years, from 1988 - 2014. Her exacting standards coupled with her expectation that each individual student perform to his or her highest capability helped establish Charleston Day’s math program as the best in the area. Countless students benefitted from her emphasis on organization, checking work, daily preparation and review, as well as her high expectation for each child.

Marcia West Technology Award:

Established in 1998 to recognize particular excellence in computers.

Audrey Elizabeth Grice Art Award:

This award was established in 2002, in memory of Audrey Grice, member of the Class of 2006. Audrey was an exceptional art student, whose energetic spirit and love for life were reflected in her work. This award recognizes particular excellence in art.

Music Award:

Established in 1983 to recognize especially noteworthy achievement in music.

Athletic Director’s Award:

Established in 2003, the Physical Education Award recognizes a student who exemplifies good sportsmanship, enthusiasm for all activities, honesty, cooperation with others, and a positive attitude.

Athlete of the Year Award (Female):

Awarded to an accomplished athlete of strong character who has shown exemplary sportsmanship, concern for fellow teammates, and a strong work ethic.

Established by Matthew Cochrane-Logan in memory of his mother Carolyn Cochrane, this scholarship recognizes a student that embodies the welcoming and inclusive spirit of Charleston Day School.

To the sixth, seventh or eighth grader with the highest academic average for this year.

Sarah Huger Jervey Award:

Established in 1947 in remembrance of Miss Sadie Jervey, whose school for grades 1 and 2 was the parent school of Charleston Day School. In 1939, she merged her school with the Day School, and taught there until 1945. It is awarded to the eighth grader with the highest cumulative academic average over the past three years.

lose your eyes and visualize YOUR Kindergarten teacher. Take a deep breath as you listen for her to call your name. Now open your eyes. I bet you are smiling! Isn’t everything we remember about kindergarten wonderful?

Kindergarten is where it all starts. The room is specially designed with lower sinks, smaller chairs and tables, fat crayons, alphabet wall cards, wooden building blocks (now referred to as engineering manipulatives) and housekeeping (called dramatic play to be politically correct). But it is much more than a place or a space.

Kindergarten is where the stage is set for lifelong learning. It is about how we talk to children – giving a round of applause or a warm hug.

It is about helping them find their voice and nudging their growth and curiosity. It is where they first begin to take responsibility and ownership for their learning. And it is by far the classroom with the MOST untied shoe laces!

Please come visit our room and see for yourself. You will see a buzz of energetic children actively investigating (learning) about the world around them through workshop style instruction. We will become readers, writers, mathematicians, authors and illustrators, engineers, artists, and problem solvers. Each month we will “buddy up” with an older grade to build school community. Join us in November to make Friendship Stew with the third grade or in April for a picnic and our own field day at Moultrie Playground with the eighth grade. We’ll take our learning outside the classroom and down the cobblestone streets to Waterfront Park, White Point Gardens, the Library Society, and the Charleston Museum. I bet you will even find us at the Red Barn in the Market.

So now I have spilled the beans and let the word out that I have the very best job! I am blessed to spend each day with these children that I often call my “littles.” I hope you will join me in watching our very first Kindergarten class of “littles” grow over the next nine years into thoughtful, engaged and responsible leaders and learners.

1. Red or Blue, which were you? Blue 2. Which CDS campus did you attend? Elliot Street 3. What is your favorite CDS memory? Gosh, I have so many amazing experiences at CDS. All of them hold dear memories. Our class began with 18 and graduated with 12 – four boys and eight girls. We were all really close and many of us still are. The traditions that Miss Tenney and Miss Stuart had for the school were a core part of our education: Blue and Red teams and the Friday relays. The annual spring badminton tournament; Commencement at the Dock Street and singing Speed Bonnie Boat, a Scottish song Miss Tenney loved; Christmas families and the FROG – that was such a big deal to bring your money to feed the frog for the Christmas families – dollar bills were lettuce and coins were carrots; Eighth grade privileges – being the only class to come in the front door of the big building; playing murder in the eighth grade for our graduation party; taking the Christmas family gifts to the families. Midmorning snack of really hot milk in a little glass bottle with saltines and graham crackers were often torture. We had to show Miss Tenney or Miss Sturart that our bottle was empty before we could play on the playground – it was tough sometimes because the milk was so hot it tasted sour! The big building and little building – it was really special to move to the big building in the third grade. The plays we did. In the first grade we did the Ugly Duckling and in the fifth grade we did Cinderella. These were such fun for me as we did not have regular special areas like music, art, and PE so these filled a void.

The memories with not only our class, but the other classes, too. Our class was close to the class above us. I still have dear friends from that class.

4. Do you have a teacher from CDS who stands out as someone who really impacted your life? In the time that I attended CDS, most of the teachers were there for the long haul and many invested their entire life

into the school. We were incredibly fortunate to have them as teachers.

Mrs. Covington and Mrs. Hummers were favorites of so many, I think of them with great fondness. “Mrs. Cov” would threaten to cut off our ears and send them to Khrushchev if we did not behave. We were all terrified of the current Russian regime, so it worked! Imagine that today. Part of Mrs. Cov’s fifth grade year was to play the license plate game. We spent afternoons cruising parking lots looking for them.

I was very fortunate to teach at CDS with Mrs. Hummers and Mrs. Leland.

It was such a great experience for me to be on faculty with them. Mrs. Leland taught us South Carolina history in the third grade. She also taught the Charleston Tour Guide course at the College of Charleston. I loved architecture and drawing and Mrs. Leland made Charleston come alive for me. She not only knew an amazing amount about architecture, she also knew incredible stories about each house and the generations of people who lived in them. I still have my notebook from her class and used it during graduate school. The Shark Teeth Finders’ Club was founded with a group from my class with Miss Wilson as our mentor. It was experiential learning at its best for the sixties. Miss Wilson truly inspired our imaginations and every treasure hunt for sharks’ teeth or artifacts was filled with adventure. She was our portal to archeology and discovery. I still love digging for them!

5. Where did you attend high school, college and graduate school after graduating from CDS? Were there any interesting turns along the way?

6. What was your first job ever? Babysitting! I think I was around 12.

My first job outside of this was working at Kanuga Conference Center the summer after the eighth grade. I worked in the canteen and helped with the children’s programs. I worked summers at Kanuga all through high school and college. It was the beginning of my yearning to have a summer camp one day. The summer after my sophomore year in college, my father insisted I get a “real job.” I went to work for First Federal Savings and Loan and worked in the drive-in window at the Mt. Pleasant branch.

The best part of this job was the bowl of tootsie pops I would give out to the children. After working for a month, my father asked me how the job was going and I burst into tears and told him I hated it and never would work in banking nor did I think I would ever balance my check book and to please let me go back to camp. He realized then and there I was truly focused on a career working with youth. He told me to call the camp and see if I could work for the rest of the summer. I did and the director, Mr. Hartley, said to come as soon as I could get there. My mother called the church to see if anyone was heading to Kanuga and I rode up with Mrs. Buist and her chauffeur, William. Imagine doing that today! I have never looked back. Camp is in my blood.

7. Tell us about your life and role at Green River Preserve and how CDS may have helped prepare you for it? In my early years after graduate school, I taught art for twenty years in private and public schools in Charleston. During the summers I still worked at camp. I always wanted to be a teacher — it started when I was three years old. When people would ask me what I wanted to do when I grew up, I would say that when I grow up I’m going to have a hundred children. Realistically, I only birthed four of my own, but over my years in schools and at camp, I’ve had thousands of them. I wanted to be a teacher who taught children outside of the box.

I love learning, but I loved taking a subject and teaching it creatively more. It was like a game – a puzzle – to take a subject and make it into a multidisciplinary lesson and incorporate it into the entire curriculum of each grade level. I loved working with all of the grade level teachers to make it happen. At some point I realized I was taking the “camp method” into the classroom. I wanted children in my classroom to be excited about learning. I am also a storyteller and love to write, so I incorporated stories into my lesson plans. I attribute this to many of the teachers at CDS. Miss Wilson and Mrs. Leland were masters at this. Many of the books Miss Wilson read to us, I read to my students. The teachers at CDS challenged us to think outside of the box. It inspired our imagination and sparked our creativity.

When my children were young, I ran my own art day camp in Charleston during the summer and over the Christmas holidays. I also ran an afterschool art program. In the late 1980’s I was offered a position at Camp Ton-a-Wandah as their program director. Three generations went to TAW and I grew up hearing tales of my mother’s years there. For ten years I taught school and would pack up for TAW for the summer. Those were some of the most special years of my life. In the late 1990’s I married Sandy Schenck. Together we are the executive Directors of Green River Preserve, a summer camp connecting children with nature. When I married Sandy, Green River Preserve was only ten years old. We are coming up on our 30 year anniversary in 2018. The hallmark of our camp is to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. Western North Carolina is home to some 70 plus camps and we are the young kid on the block. We needed a niche – we hike the land – walk the talk. The Schenck family purchased

the land known as the Preserve in 1953 for fly fishing and hunting. It is where Sandy spent his weekends and summers. The headwaters of the Green River bubble up in our backyard and six miles of it run through it.

The 3,400 acres of the Preserve serve as the setting for the camp. Campers spend mornings hiking with a naturalist and afternoons in camp activities.

My main role at GRP has been as a program director – curriculum planner – and mom to all of the campers. I love designing creative programs. In addition to camp, I have been able to be the main force behind developing GRP’s School of Environmental Education (SEE), a residential school program we offer in the fall and spring. These programs meet the standards of education for North and South Carolina. Partnering camp with schools is a perfect marriage and something that has brought the way I love to teach full circle. I often think of Miss Wilson and the Shark Teeth Finder’s Club and the hours we spent digging up yards – archelogy is a big part of camp – my niece Martha Middleton Wallace, a CDS alumni, is our resident archeologist. Many of her digs with campers have unearthed some incredible finds. The sheer joy we see in children with these discoveries is very similar to the joy I felt each time I discovered a shark’s tooth.

8. What do you do outside of camp? (hobbies, interests, community service, etc.) Outside of camp – I love the beach! Each year, we try to spend time in the Charleston area during the winter. I grew up spending summers on Sullivan’s Island in a family house we had. It is my happy place. I love to read, paint, draw, sew, hike, walk, boat, fly fish, travel, and WRITE. I’m never bored — there are just too many fun things to do. I have just finished my first children’s book and am in the process of getting it published. I can’t wait! In the community, I have been very involved with the Flat Rock Playhouse for many years and with the American Camp Association ACA. I’ve served on their boards and loved every minute of it. I’ve been involved with ACA on the national and regional level as a conference speaker and a contributor to Camping Magazine.

Right now the article on my plate is Missy with her two grandsons “Camps that partner with Schools” — it is something that many camps are looking to do and we’ve been at it for twenty years. Most of all, though, I love spending time with our family. We are a close crew — together, Sandy and I have six children, four Izards (Jane, Anne, Edward, and Katharine) and two Schencks (Catherine and Laurinda). Three Izard children went to CDS. We have three grandchildren who live right at camp and I am one spoiled granny.

Our daughter, Anne Izard, and her husband, Steve, are the directors of the camp now and Sandy and I are on the retirement end of Executive Directors.

Bonus Question: If you had a chance for a one year radical sabbatical what would you do and/or where would you go? The beach. I love to walk on the beach with my dog, Trout, and collect shells. I also feel that way about the mountains – the difference now is that the mountains are now my place of work, so relaxing does not always happen. I love the water and being around it. I am a sunshine person, so warm weather is where I would head. Spending quality time with my family during that year would be really important, too.
