Local foster parents say caring for foster children can seem like a daunting undertaking, but it can change lives. And that, they say, makes fostering more than worth it.

The South Carolina Youth Advocacy Program has worked alongside the S.C. Department of Social Services for the past 30 years to recruit and support therapeutic foster families throughout the state.

Connery The Youth Advocacy Program, which has a Lowcountry office in North Charleston, needs about 150 families in the Charleston area to open their homes, officials say. In particular, there is a shortage of families for teenagers who need foster care.

“I think there’s just sort of a natural

reluctance around taking on teenagers because they can be a lot more to handle,” said John Connery of Columbia, special projects director for S.C. Youth Advocacy Program. “There are not many families that are willing to take teenagers — so they’re really golden when we do find them.”

He said there is a continuing challenge to find families to keep up with demand.

To help build strong relationships when recruiting and training, the program walks prospective foster parents through certification step-by-step and provides on-call support service.

“Every state child welfare system does not have enough families,” Connery said.

Connery has been with the S.C. Youth Advocacy Program for about 12 years after retiring from a 33-year career with the state Department of Mental Health. He also helped found the Berkeley Community Mental Health Center in 1980.

Black Southern art exhibit to debut at IAAM’s January opening

By Herb Frazier Unsettled Things: Art from an African American South, a collection of 44 contemporary pieces of art from 28 artists, will make its national debut Jan. 21 as the inaugural special exhibition for the opening of the International African American Museum (IAAM).

The exhibit is organized by the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, according to the museum’s website.

The exhibit of 20th century art draws its title from a companion collection of essays The Unfinished Business of Unsettled Things: Art from an African American South, published this summer by the UNC Press. The book is edited by UNC’s professor of Southern studies Bernard L. Herman.

The wide-ranging pieces come from the Ackland’s permanent collection. The art explores works by artists who were once overlooked but are now considered major figures in the art world. They include three Alabama natives — the late Thornton Dial, Lonnie B. “Sand Man” Holley and the late Mose Tolliver — as well as the late Georgian Nellie Mae Rowe. The artwork centers on three themes: life, spirit and matter. The themes emerge from recurring threads in the works’ subject matter, from the artists’ shared approaches to choosing and applying materials, and from the artists’ accounts of their ideas, efforts and struggles.

Museum to open in less than 10 weeks

The IAAM’s opening exhibit will feature artworks that examine life, spirit and matter a 19th century slave-trading port on the Cooper River. When the IAAM opens, it will present the Black experience in America in nine galleries, featuring the stories of rice, culture and religion.

Slavery will be told through the subject of rice in the Carolina Gold Gallery. The Carolina Connections gallery will display scenes of modern South Carolina and other African American sites across the state. The Gullah Geechee Gallery will hold a replica of a praise house with the sounds of a worship service recorded at Johns Island’s Moving Star Hall Praise House on River Road.

615,000 in S.C. cast early ballots

More than 615,000 South Carolinians cast ballots early this year ahead of in-person voting on Nov. 8, state officials said Monday. If overall statewide turnout this year ends up being 1.7 million registered voters as it was in 2018, early voters would be responsible for about 35% of all votes cast.

“Early voting has been a huge success,” said Chris Whitmire, deputy executive director of the S.C. Election Commission. “More than 560,000 South Carolinians took advantage of the opportunity to vote early over the past two weeks.” Another 55,000 cast absentee ballots, he added.

The state offered no-excuse early voting for the first time in 2020 as an emergency response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It turned out, in many ways, to be an experiment that allowed often recalcitrant state legislators to see how it worked before turning it into permanent law.

Whitmire said the biggest benefit of early voting is it allows people to pick their best day to vote — either one of the 12 early voting days or election day. Additionally, there’s less pressure on bundling all voting into one day, which yields much shorter lines and a smoother process of voting.

“Voters have a total of 13 days during which they can choose the

date and time that is most convenient for them to vote,” he said.

“Early voting helps election administrators too — spreading the total number of voters across more than two weeks lessens the stress on the process, reducing issues and helping ensure every voter has the opportunity to vote.”

Isaac Cramer, executive director of the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration, said the county’s seven early voting locations generated record turnout.

“We have consistently led the state with voters casting a ballot ahead of Election Day,” Cramer said. “The data shows that early voting is popular in South Carolina.”

Some 67,364 registered voters in Charleston County cast early ballots between Oct. 24 and Nov. 5; another 7,466 voted absentee.

The county’s two most popular early voting locations were at Seacoast Church branches in Mount Pleasant (19,981 voters) and West Ashley (15,157), while the least visited location was the Hollywood-St. Paul’s Library (3,022).

In Berkeley County, 21,246 voters cast early ballots, while some 20,994 voted early in Dorchester County, according to state data.

Charleston police came across two men fighting Oct. 26 on King Street. One man was straddling the other man on the ground and screaming at a group of people who gathered. When officers broke up the fight, one man said it all started when the other made fun of him for wearing a suit.

They both were charged with disorderly conduct.

Last strike A Charleston police officer reported a man Oct. 27 put an open Budweiser in a trash can at a Spring Street bus stop.

The officer told him he saw what he did, and the man said, “I know, just give me a ticket.” The same officer ran into the same man Oct. 30 at the same bus stop holding a cup with brown liquid and reeking of alcohol. The man said it was juice, but the officer said he knew it was alcohol, to which he replied, “Yeah, just give me a ticket.” He was arrested for having an open container.

Thief in the night A downtown nightclub bouncer on Oct. 29 flagged down a Charleston police officer on patrol to alert him that a man ran off without paying after he tried to use a counterfeit $20 bill at 2 a.m. Seems pretty elaborate for getting out of a bar tab.

when she first became a single foster mom, these days she’s a married homemaker. She adopted two of her first foster children.

“It is the most rewarding thing you will ever do with your life,” Bankston told the City Paper. “Not only have I helped the children, they have helped me become a better person and [grow] in understanding and gratitude for what I have.”

She’s cared for teenage girls in the foster care system for almost 10 years. And while there were times when it was tough to deal with the emotions that they were feeling, she realized that with gentle communication and strong boundaries, she could earn their respect and help them feel secure.

Bankston recalled taking care of one high school aged girl who had been told she would never amount to anything and never graduate from high school.

“She ended up graduating high school and it was the most emotional moment for me standing there with her real mom when she walked down that aisle,” Bankston said.

“It was just awesome.”

She emphasized that fostering was challenging. “But just give it a try, because it will keep you grounded. One thing you say to a child may change their whole life, because they’re going to remember that somebody loved them and took time for them — and that’s all that these children want.”

Sharing family time

Amanda and Jason Dolinski of West Ashley, both 43, became licensed foster parents through the Youth Advocacy Program two years ago. They have six children of their own and currently foster two children, including a teenager. They’ve had some teenagers come into their homes for a few months at a time.

Currently, they’ve been caring for their foster daughter for 18 months.

“It’s always surprising to me how mature a 14-year-old kid can be that’s coming into foster care, and [from] the life experiences that they’ve been through, there’s a real beau-

At the museum’s west end, the Center for Family History will help visitors trace their genealogy — something missing from the histories of many Black families across the nation. The museum’s staff will also direct visitors to DNA testing so they can use science to find their African roots.

“There’s no timeframe as far as when you have to be licensed,” she said, “but I would suggest if you have any desire at all that you get the packet, start the process and even just look through what you have to have done to get licensed. You learn a lot through it all.”

For Amanda, some of the most impactful experiences she’s had is sharing family time with the foster kids she’s made a home for.

“Sharing a tradition of carving a pumpkin or decorating a Christmas tree or going apple picking or going camping — these kids probably have never experienced that in their life.”

The Dolinskis said they hoped potential foster parents understood that fostering a child is not a stepping-stone to adoption — although it can be. Fostering a child can be a temporary situation and help struggling parents get back on their feet to eventually care for their own children again.

“It doesn’t have to be that you’re going to take a kid in forever,” Amanda said. “It might be that you’re just giving a family an opportunity to have a restart or reset.”

Giving opportunities

Jonathan Dugan, who is interning to become an assistant principal of Knightsville Elementary School in Summerville, has been a single foster parent for about four years and currently fosters three boys in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

“These kids are wonderful,” Dugan told the City Paper. “They just need an opportunity to be allowed to be who they are, to make a few mistakes and to know that they’re genuinely loved. My children will tell you that I am the most predictable person in the world. Everything’s the same routine.

“Whenever you do something, my response is usually the same. They know what to expect. And that gives them some stability.”

Curry, born in Chicago and ordained in 1978, served as a priest in North Carolina parishes until being elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina in 2000. Curry got the world’s attention when he delivered, during the 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, a passionate address about the power of love.

Cure the dark side of elections T

he midterm election results will be mostly clear when you wake up Wednesday, although some whiny election deniers likely will challenge outcomes in a pitiful display of poor loserism.

There’s a good chance that you’ll be irritated at some results, pleased with others. But there’s one big thing you should be very pleased with — no-excuse early voting. It works in South Carolina. More than 600,000 registered voters went to the polls between Oct. 24 and Nov. 5 to cast ballots, which had the awesome spinoff effect of making election day voting better by cutting lines as well as allowing poll workers to not be crushed by precinct activity.

Unfortunately, the elections of 2022 will be better remembered for something else — the emerging darkness in American politics.

Politics in America has taken a turn toward darkness in recent years following the 2016 election of Donald Trump. Today, our state and nation are more polarized than ever, fueled by rancor, hate, division, meanspiritedness and a win-at-all-costs approach that spurns decency.

You see this darkness in increasingly negative, hostile advertising from both sides that churns on fear. You see it in the foreign bots that play political Pac Man on the internet. You see it in the quality of candidates, many of whom benefit from lopsided gerrymandering that effectively cuts off members of a minority party from participating in one race or another.

And you see it in election tactics that people should be ashamed of. In one S.C. House race, for example, a Republican campaign for a candidate who may be tied to an ultra-conservative group refused to return phone calls to five different numbers from a City Paper reporter who wanted to do nothing more than his job — asking questions and finding out answers to help voters pick.

What cowardice.

The same kind of anti-transparency mindset is obvious in dark money groups that use untold millions of unreported, secret dollars to impact the outcomes of elections. A local example is the white-as-driven-snowsounding Charleston Coalition for Kids, a dark money group thought to be pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into nine school board races. According to one report, the group spent up to $33,000 on 1.1 million Facebook ad impressions and sent oversized direct mail postcards around the county that likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

To be clear, these dark money groups are not doing anything illegal. But they’re cynically trying to change election outcomes without telling voters much about who they really are. That needs to change.

Federal and state lawmakers need to stand up for a change and overturn the reign of dark money in politics by requiring all organizations to report all election donations — just like individuals have to right now.

Let’s not allow secret rich folks and corporations take away our democracy.

Hate, familiar in the South during the Jim Crow era and civil rights struggles, lately seems to have overshadowed what once masked it — hope for America and democracy. These days, there’s growing disappointment and concern for the future of America’s experiment with true liberty — not the venomous mantras spouted by extremists, political lemmings and do-nothing acolytes of the Make America Great Again nonsense.

Heidi Beirich, who worked for years at the Southern Poverty Law Center documenting hate groups across America, told us she believed leaders, particularly conservatives, needed to denounce hatred, antisemitism and election denialism threatening our democracy.

“There is the usual hope that people will stand up against hate when they see it and vote it down at the ballot box,” said Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “If decent people don’t speak up, this is never going to change.”

More than local food Restaurants partner with Charleston artists to provide a Lowcountry dining experience

magine finishing a delicious meal from one of Charleston’s restaurants, and as you savor the flavors, you notice something on the plate in front of you: the rim of the plate isn’t smooth all the way around; there’s a small dip on one side, a little bit raised on the other. The plate across from you is the same one, but slightly different; there’s more dips and raises on it than yours.

The plates aren’t technically exact, but perfect in their own way.

These “imperfect creations” could be made in a ceramicist’s small backyard workshop or in a big North Charleston studio shared by a collective of local creatives.

Charleston restaurants are known to prioritize sourcing local ingredients, but some restaurants take their local approach even further, incorporating work from ceramicists and artists into diners’ experiences.

It’s what local artist Fiorenzo Berardozzi calls “earth to table.” Berardozzi is a ceramicist and owner of CBFB Tablescapes, a local ceramics company dedicated to working with restaurants and chefs to enhance the dining experience.

Berardozzi became interested in creating pieces for restaurants after a 2008 residency in Japan.

“I was just in awe of going out to a restaurant and seeing handmade ceramics, cutlery, anything dealing with food being used,” he said. “And once I saw that, I was like, ‘This is kind of neat. This is something that I’ve never really thought about.’ Food has always been remarkable.

Outside of language, food is culture.”

This endeavor has driven him to be a longtime collaborator with Husk, helping craft unique dishware for the establishment’s chefs.

“I’d rather make something that reflects the chef’s attitude toward food than the food itself,” he said. “When each chef comes in, we sort of try to adapt. It was really hard with [Travis] Grimes because he was part of the whole movement with [Sean] Brock. And so now

with [Raymond England] there, we’re revisiting the collection.”

England became the executive chef of Husk in March of this year. Since his new role isn’t tied to the standard of Southern ingredients, he can play around and not be so restrictive, Berardozzi said. “Same thing with the plates.

“I’m not really interested too much in the functionality of [the plates],” he said, “because it’s a plate. A plate is a plate is a plate.

The only way a plate becomes interesting is when you use it and when you share it.”

For example, Berardozzi said he once made bowls for chef Jason Stanhope of FIG with an extra dip at the bottom to collect all the juices and sauces of the meal. On the surface, the bowl just had an interesting shape, but it was something Stanhope wanted, he said, so the guests could continue to experience the meal in a different way.

The liquids concentrate at the bottom and can then be used to dip from or even sip.

Currently, Berardozzi said he is working on a new plate collection for England that’s a much more modern design than the previous rustic approach. In his process of shaping the plates, he cuts each piece freehand to add a flair of personality, so each dish is unique.

Along with working consistently with Husk, Berardozzi has worked with other establishments around town, including Butcher & Bee, The Daily, FIG and Tavern & Table and more.

It isn’t just plates and cups that restaurateurs source from local artists. Things like lighting and decorative artwork have ties with the Charleston art community, too.

Kate Towill, co-owner of Basic Projects, worked with several local artists to add personality to her spaces. At Sullivan’s Fish Camp, the old English pub sign at the exterior of the restaurant is the work of island resident Mickey Williams, while the custom lamp shades above the bar were commissioned from Charlestowne Stained Glass Studios.

The work of Maria White can be found all around Post House, from the bar and restaurant to the Rose Room and the formal living room. Her spherical luminaries are a bright white porcelain, with deep grooves to illuminate a warm light around the restaurant and bar.

And though the design isn’t unique to Post House, White said, “it just looks completely different in each space.” She described a Los Angeles restaurant using her work with a mid-century motif, whereas Rūta Smith

Charleston artists Susan Gregory and Sonny Sisan have also worked with chefs to help design a fitting dishware for a space or meal.

Gregory worked with restaurateurs John Zucker, of downtown’s Cru Cafe and the now-closed Purlieu, and Charles Matthew, of the now-closed Scarecrow. Gregory focused on the French concept Zucker wanted to bring with Purlieu, so she used designs of traditional French linens as graphic motifs.

She created specific ovalesque plates for Purlieu, which is something you can’t spin on a wheel, she said. The dish was an oblong shape, painted a bright white to match the traditional French style Gregory wanted to achieve.

She sees working with chefs and restaurateurs as a more collaborative endeavor Sonny Sisan than creating pieces to sell or exhibit. Sisan, who’s first collaboration was with Pink Bellies, named Best Restaurant by City Paper readers in 2022, shares that sentiment with Gregory.

“This was my first project that was going to be used in a space more consistently versus being sold in the store,” he said. “And it was definitely a very thoughtful process … but also really cool and fun to make.”

Sisan’s handiwork can be held in your hands at Pink Bellies. It’s a small, formfitting pink cup with a conical shape. The circumference of the lip is smaller than the base to trap heat, according to Sisan. The cups were intended for tea, but are also used for water.

The Longboard on Sullivan’s Island uses semi-local artist MaryMar Keenan’s plates. Keenan is currently based out of San Francisco, but still considers herself to be a Charleston local. She’s originally from the area, visits frequently and owns a home in Mount Pleasant, she said.

Keenan’s work was first used in The Longboard’s sister restaurant on St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands, according to owner Clint Gaskins. And when plans for The Longboard were in motion, Keenan’s connection to Charleston was part of the reason they continued using her work.

“It was a pretty easy fit,” Gaskins said.

“We just utilized a different line that she had that was a little bit more in line with our colors and everything here.”

After a three-year break from live shows, Charleston’s alt comedy scene is making a return.

Rip City CHS, an experimental comedy/ variety show featuring original sketches, characters, music, performance art and everything in between, is back. Curated and produced by Henry Riggs and Maari Suorsa, the comedy duo known as “Nameless Numberhead,” Rip City has been a staple in the underground comedian scene since its inception in 2015.

The show returns Nov. 12 and continues monthly at rotating venues. This month, Silver Hill Studios will host the show. In December, Hed Hi Studio, Tim McManus’ brain child and hub for some of the coolest studio artists in town, will host a free show.

“We love a nontraditional space!”

Riggs said. Starting in 2023, Rip City will be hosted at LO-Fi Brewery on Upper Meeting Street.

After the pandemic-induced break, Riggs said he is excited to return to live shows and harness the energy he feels from his fellow artists.

“Talking to artists around town, they’re ready to get up there and get performing,” he said. “I feel like there’s an exciting, frenetic energy in the creative community here where people are inspired and ready to make stuff. Audiences are slowly getting back to consuming it.”

Riggs and Suorsa call themselves a “hyperbolic comedy duo with 400 years of experience.” For the past eight years, the married couple has produced, performed and taught comedy in Charleston.

Riggs said he is “freakin’ stoked to get this show back out into the world” after taking a break during the pandemic, with the exception of Rip City’s live streamed show, DigiRip. Over the years, Rip City has been a catchall testing ground for local comedians, musicians and artists of all varieties to explore the weirder side of their mediums.

The show features a rotating cast of artists, so it’s entirely new every time.

“Charleston’s a very music-driven town,” he added. “So we’re friends with a lot of musicians and we’re always trying to find that crossover between comedy and other mediums … We feel like a lot of artists are just genuinely funny and they don’t get to show that side of themselves through whatever their medium is, because there’s this level of seriousness to it.

“It’s fun to get someone out of their element and say, ‘Hey do something that you might not normally do, on stage at the Royal American, or as an actor, something that you may not get to do in a play, that thing you’ve always wanted to do that’s maybe a little weirder, or something that you can’t quite describe because it doesn’t fit any traditional boxes.’”

Past Rip City performers have moved away over the last eight years, but the core principles of the show always encourage new voices, creating a comfortable atmosphere for audiences to discover new performers. And, for performers to experiment with their craft.

Past performers include: The EffinBRadio Podcast, Marcus Amaker, Andy Livengood, Secret Guest, Jessica Mickey and many more.

“Coming up, we’ve got some really fun guests,” Riggs said. “Jenna and Corey from Babe Club are gonna come do some stuff. They’re so silly online. We want to encourage that silly side of artists. Then there’s some old classic people returning: Tim Hoeckel is one of the funniest guys in town. I’m also excited for Camille Lowman and R.W. Smith from PURE Theatre.

“I try to curate it based on what I know of people’s work,” he said. “And then I trust that they bring something different and out there.”

Rip City is developing a more creative Charleston, which Riggs and Suorsa see as the antidote to the constant creation of more Charleston developments.

“We’ve always used Rip City as a subversive platform to have discussions about how the city is or is not making space for art,” Riggs said. “I like being tongue and cheek with it. I think we give a lot of money to developers, and art is often thought about in the least amount of priority. I wanna talk about why artists are constantly leaving this city. And I don’t have the answers to that. But I definitely want to question it … what can art be in a city that desperately needs it?”

Rip City CHS returns Nov. 12 at Silver Hill Studios at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

Mushroom installations take over Hampton Park

By Chloe Hogan Multidisciplinary artist Meredith Connelly is the mastermind behind the temporary installation “Mushrooms,” a site-specific installation in Hampton Park that is open now through Dec. 11. This art display marks the relaunch of Art in the Park, a public art initiative organized by nonprofit Charleston Parks Conservancy.

Connelly, an installation artist based near Charlotte, has worked with lighting and technology for more than a decade. Her latest creation “Mushrooms” consists of more than 100 handcrafted thermoplastic mushroom forms creating what she called a “multisensory and immersive experience.”

“I illuminate my installations and encase the lighting in industrial materials to reveal their organic qualities,” Connelly said. “I intentionally placed each installation component to highlight the architectural elements of the park’s natural setting through use of the cast light from the objects. Time is also an important principle of my design, as these works come and go like the seasons.”

Connelly is inspired by science, nature and technology. Her creative process starts with walking outside, observing, sketching and “photographically foraging for inspiration.”

“In many cases, when I see a space, I

have a vision of the installation I would like to create,” said Connelly, who designed “Mushrooms” specifically for the area surrounding Hampton Park’s Rose Pavilion.

“At its core, my work is about connectivity,” she said. “The light connects the viewers, the natural environment and the installation components in a way that molds and drives an authentic and approachable experience.”

Connelly began experimenting with the use of lighting in her work while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in studio art at the University of Wilmington. For nearly a decade afterward, she created indoor installations, with a few one-night-only outdoor pieces. In 2018, the artist was commissioned to create a series of temporary and site-specific outdoor installations in Charlotte along a half-mile trail.

“It was a transformational moment and shift in my work, when I brought the work back to the spaces that inspired the designs,” Connelly said. “Creating site-specific installations using light as a material has always been a foundational part of my practice, but when I pushed beyond the walls of man-made structures and connected it to the earth, the seasons and the elements, it felt intuitive, ancestral and inherent.”

“Working with Natalie Jones and her team at the Charleston Parks Conservancy has been an utter joy,” said Connelly, who is excited about the accessibility of this exhibition, and how the public can engage openly, freely and in nature.

“There are many artists that have specific intentions for their viewers, but my work is public, and so I focus on meeting people where they are … The work, time and nature unify to create unique and individualized experiences for viewers.”

The artist pushes deep care and intention into her creations with the hope that viewers “have a moment” with the art.

“At the core,” she said, “my work is about connection and making space.”

looked, but in actuality, play a critical role in supporting a healthy and thriving ecosystem.

“Fungi, like many of the other specimens I explore conceptually, have activity and intelligence that are not seen by the naked eye,” she said.

“Similarly to the human brain, mushrooms communicate with electrical impulses sent through their mycelium, a complex network underground similar to a root system. They are transformational, as they renew something that has decomposed into something usable for the plants and animals around them. That is why I chose to reflect on them creatively through temporary and site-specific work,” Connelly said.

This display relaunches Art in the Park, a public art initiative organized by the Charleston Parks Conservancy. The installation is the first after a two-year pandemic pause in the Art in the Park project, and the first in the series under the leadership of Natalie Jones, who recently joined the conservancy as its director of public art and programs.

We had Brock, [Jason] Stanhope (FIG) was starting Shemtov out. Maybe we will look back and that WAS the wave. But I think there are plenty of exciting, if smaller, waves coming.

“I think there’s this whole slightly-under-theradar group, and I would put Nikko [Cagalanan] from Mansueta’s at the top of that list. He’s planning and working and looking for spaces. We had Short Grain [food truck] that’s now Jackrabbit Filly, and they gave us something new to be Palmer excited about. I think the folks behind Chubby Fish are tempted to do something else in the future. It may not be a different concept, but the exciting things for locals will be things like that.”

Steve Palmer, CEO of Indigo Road Hospitality, added, “I think we are going through a transition. “I don’t think it’s a negative transition. You have my graduating class, with Kevin Johnson (the Grocery), Mike Lata, Jacques Larson (Obstinate Daughter, Wild Olive). I think it’s safe to say we are the old guard. We are still doing relevant things, but we’re seeing a brand-new generation.”

For example, there’s James London of Chubby Fish and Shuai Wang at Jackrabbit Filly, Palmer said.

“It’s a generation that did not cook in traditional kitchens the way my generation did,” he said.

But do chefs still want to come to Charleston?

“Yes and no,” said Tony Cuajunco, director of operations for Holy City Hospitality. “If you have a successful restaurant in Charleston, you don’t even have to do the interview in a new city, they just ask you to come based on Charleston’s reputation.

“Nashville is a hot city right now for that. But Charleston is still

Palmer, whose company has opened restaurants throughout the country since it originated in the Holy City, added, “I think there has been a period of three to five years where places like Nashville and Asheville have been getting more attention than Charleston.

We were basking in the golden sunlight for many years, but then other cities developed their own food scenes.”

Other places are growing up

Susan Cohen, president and CEO of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association, said restaurants are opening in other cities not because chefs are fleeing Charleston, but because other cities such as Raleigh, Greenville and Columbia are growing into food destinations as well.

“I don’t think Charleston is ever going to peak, Cohen but some restaurants that have already proven their concept there may want to expand and that is why you would see a change,” she said.

That’s what Karalee Fallert has done as she prepares to open the latest Taco Boy in Asheville, N.C. “Our desire to grow outside of Charleston comes from a desire to grow our brand. The older brands, like mine, are institutions and where are the opportunities for institutions to grow? It’s Fallert why we look outside for fresh opportunities. At the same time, we don’t feel jaded about what we have here,” Fallert said, adding that she’s still hoping to expand in the Charleston area, but it likely won’t be on the peninsula. She said she is exploring the Mount Pleasant area.

“I think if I had a crystal ball, I would say that I think we are going to see a real changing of the mainstays,” she said. “I think we are going to see expanding outside of the peninsula. People are going to be surprised by what happens in North Charleston.”

Although Charleston may not have peaked, it has “reached an interesting saturation point,” Fallert said. “There are many more operators here than there have ever been. Charleston has a unique brand of Southern charm that pairs well with the convivial nature of what we do [in the restaurant industry]. It has a beautiful magic, and more people have come here to be a part of it. If there was a Golden Age, maybe that was the time we were a small pond with a handful of big fish.”

New Orleans-based brunch joint Ruby Sunshine is opening its second location Nov. 18 in Avondale’s The Victory building on Savannah Highway.

Owner Erin Tyler talks good timing as Tin Roof turns 15

Columbia-native Erin Tyler moved to Charleston in 1999 to earn a bachelor’s degree in media studies at the College of Charleston. She didn’t want to pursue a job in her field right away when she graduated, so instead she traveled and waited tables — which proved to be the best career move she could have made.

Tyler told the City Paper that it was during this period of uncertainty when things inadvertently coalesced for her to be able to establish a one-of-a-kind bar and music venue in West Ashley. This month, her audacious indie enterprise, the Tin Roof, is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

The origin story

Tyler said it all goes back to a night in 2006 when she ran into an old friend. Their conversation veered in the direction of “What would it be like to open a bar?” and it developed into an idea that lingered.

She had seen the business side of things up close while working for her friends Alex

and Vanessa Harris at the Charleston Pour House for over a year, so it wasn’t a completely unfounded thought.

“Over the next few months, things started to come together quickly,” Tyler said. “I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I was learning as I went. I learned that The West Ashley Bait and Tackle was for sale.

After seeing it, I felt that it was the perfect quirky spot with a ton of character for a neighborhood-artsy-dive-bar. I definitely didn’t have money to buy the space, but I convinced the owner to rent it out.”

Once the location was secured, Tyler began to customize it to suit her preferences. “I changed it a lot: paint, murals, new fixtures, updating building materials, etc.

The stage and soundboard didn’t come until later.” After all, Tyler didn’t know then that it was going to become a music venue.

Tin Roof opened in November 2007.

While it was less known for hosting bands in the early days, she said, it did earn a reputation right out of the gate for being a welcoming place with a killer hot dog menu.

“Two great local venues, Cumberland’s and The Map Room, closed within a year

of Tin Roof opening,” Tyler said. Her timely response was to build a stage and book more bands.

“Even though I didn’t set out for it to be a music venue, with the closing of those two important sites, I thought it was important to provide a space for the more alternative indie-punk-arthouse scene,” Tyler said.

This shift in focus proved to be quite an undertaking for Tyler and her small team.

“I’ve handled the majority of booking myself over the years. I had no clue what I was doing in the beginning. I just had to dive into it. I’ve been given some good advice from others in the business, worked with fantastic touring and local bands, had a little luck and learned from my mistakes.

I’ve also had help from local promoters and managers. Tin Roof’s staff and regulars have also contributed to booking great bands and planning unique events just by sharing their interests, ideas, creativity and talent. It’s really been a collaborative effort.”

Tin Roof since its inception but some of Tyler’s favorites shows include: Wayne “The Train” Hancock, Legendary Shack Shakers, Deer Tick, The Queers, The Slackers, The Toasters, 7 Seconds, Red Clay Strays, and one special evening with legendary punk rock journalist Roderick Edward “Legs” McNeil.

As impressive as its past has been, the best moments at Tin Roof may still lie ahead. “We are showcasing a variety of special events for the 15th anniversary celebration, keeping it mixed up like we always do,” Tyler said.

As part of the festivities, Tin Roof is even hosting local screamo-death metal favorite Guardian’s Warlock’s farewell show with special guests Hybrid Mutants, Super Runaway and Obvious Liars.

Guardian’s Warlock frontman PJ Steven is thrilled to be bidding adieu from that precise vantage point and wouldn’t have it any other way. “Tin Roof was one of the first venues I played, and definitely the first venue I ever went to see a show in Charleston,” he said. “The stage is terrific and it really does feel like the best dive bar you’ve ever been to.”

Even though by now what Tyler has created has become an institution for imbibing and an island for misfit musicians from all over the world, she still insists that “it’s not an easy business.”

“I made my fair share of mistakes in the early years, and I’m very proud to still be here and making improvements and growing financially,” Tyler said. “I’m operating on my terms with an incredible staff that is so helpful, creative and supportive.

For her, success is measured by shared experiences, meeting new people and telling stories.

“My absolute favorite thing about owning the Tin Roof is when patrons tell me about a life-changing show they attended as a fan or about meeting their [romantic] partner for the first time on a blind date, or a member of a local band telling me how they opened for one of their musical heroes here.”

At the end of the day, for Tyler and everyone else involved with Tin Roof: “It’s a home and the people in it are a family,” she said. “My hopes for the future are simply to continue being us, an eclectic venue where all are welcome for years to come.”

The 15th anniversary show featuring Guardian’s Warlock with Hybrid Mutants, Super Runaway and Obvious Liars is 9 p.m. Nov. 12.
