“There’s some things that need to be addressed … because that location is not supportive of 5,000 people coming out there without some major planning … and based on what [Dorchester County] staff’s giving me [as] feedback, that has not been happening. … That zoning is not [meant] for an event venue.”

The intent is not to try to completely shut Woodlands down, Byars said, but to find a solution for everybody.

Woodlands Nature Reserve, a 6,000-acre chunk of land tucked off Ashley River Road in Dorchester County, has suspended all activities after county officials denied event permits last month for an Aug. 27 Slightly Stoopid concert and Resonance Festival planned for Sept. 15-17. Woodlands’ operations are at a standstill after issues getting special events permitted from Dorchester County

The event promoters didn’t apply for a permit for the July 1 event, Iwinski said, but he and his team were not aware of that and were not contacted about the infraction.Dorchester County Councilman Jay Byars of Summerville told City Paper he received several email complaints about traffic in the area after the July event and heard that residents complained to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.

Traffic concerns

The reserve held an unpermitted Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert July 1 that Dorchester County records said was “of unprecedented scale” and “caused serious life-safety and traffic issues,” making traffic on Highway 61 caused by event attendees another concern outside of frequency of events.

Woodlands owner Holland Duell, who lives on the property, said he feels Woodlands’ activities fall under eco tourism and social cultural events, which are permitted uses according to the Ashley River Historic Overlay District ordinances that govern the property. Although, ecotourism is a secondary land use, he

“Sustainablesaid. forestry and wildlife habitat have been the dominant land use for decades at the Woodlands Nature Reserve,” Duell told City Paper. “In 2019, we began to open the reserve to the public through ecotourism, social and cultural events. We hope to collaborate with the government so that we can offer nature-based experiences for [the] public rather than remaining strictly a timber operation.”

Since 2019, Woodlands has hosted five larger-scale events with additional smaller community and arts events, Iwinski said. He expressed uncertainty about why zoning questions have been raised.

Byars said he is under the impression that Woodlands functions primarily as a preserve with occasional small-scale events.

Topics for conversation include setting teachers up to succeed, staffing schools with mental health professionals and equipping campuses with security technology.

The county cited in its denial of the August concert and September festival because it said those activities were “not found to be incidental and subordinate to the permitted primary use of the property as required under Section 10.2.3 of the Dorchester County Zoning and Land Development

The event will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Unitarian Church on Archdale Street ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November to focus on educa tion, safety and health care issues impacting children.

Instead of housing families in one location, My Sister’s House is shifting to sheltering women and children in local hotels and short-term rental property scattered around the Charleston area, said Tosha Connors, chief executive officer of My Sister’s House (MSH).

News 09.14.2022 6

The former client said she doubts the MSH staff can adequately provide services and ensure clients’ safety, if they are scattered across the Charleston area.

My Sister’s House, a nonprofit organization that protects battered women fleeing domestic violence, has sold its 10-bedroom group shelter in North Charleston to a prop erty management firm.

“If you take a mom with possibly five kids and you put her in a hotel room, there is no outlet for those kids and there is no one to talk to or bond with. If you isolate them within those walls even the abuser starts to look really good again.” Kennedy and her husband, Butch Kennedy, advocate for domestic violence victims and raise community support for mentoring, anti-violence and youth jobs programs.

But a former MSH client, who the City Paper chose not to identify for privacy reasons, had mixed reactions about her family’s experience with the agency and its move to decentralize shelter services. She said she was a MSH client in 2014 and again at the height of the pan demic last year.

“This event is important because as we continue to grow as a community in Charleston, there are newcomers and locals who need to know the people who run the organiza tions that contribute to preservation and upkeep of our city,” said Tarah Gee, general manager of Brewlab. “This event is for everyone to come and meet and learn about these organizations that are available to them.”

Two local ocean-focused environmental organizations are teaming up to host a conference and in-person festival focused on climate change action.

violence,” she wrote. “We are case managers, court advocates … emergency response trainers, basic needs coordinators, transportation providers, rehousing experts, and more.”

Later when her partner reportedly abused their daughter, she said she briefly returned to the shelter in March 2021 but then the agency separated families in hotels because of social distancing requirements. Families couldn’t prepare their own meals to meet dietary restrictions and donated food was horrible, she said. Personal care items and laundry supplies were dif ficult to obtain, and her daughter did not see a therapist.

Kennedy disagreed, saying that in a group shelter abused women bond and share their stories and under stand they are not the only person faced with the issues of domestic violence. “That’s when the healing happens through those exchanges,” she explained. “It is their own type of peer counseling.”

The virtual conference will feature both experts and local stakeholders from the Southeast who will share their perspectives on climate change, conservation and the resto ration of biodiversity.

chairman Elliotte Quinn, a Charleston attorney, said the organization has “served thousands of individuals and worked tirelessly to give all survivors equal access to the resources they deserve. While it is often difficult for survivors to share their stories publicly, two brave women went on record earlier this year to share their personal experiences with My Sister’s House.”

Lisa Kennedy, outreach coordinator for the nonprofit

As part of the Hope Summit, Brewlab will be broad casting the virtual presentations during this event.

Quinn said the scramble to provide safe havens for abused women during the pandemic was proof that hotel rooms in emergency situations are a workable first step toward placing families in rental housing. To congregate traumatized women and children in a building is not the best approach that would allow them to heal and resume their lives, he said.

Connors said, “We have definitely moved to a multisite model. We are also working with private landlords who are willing to accommodate the special needs of our clients.” However, the agency is currently not accepting new clients, she told the City Paper recently. “We are on a temporary hold due to capacity issues and internal staffing issues,” she said.

From staff reports

“The Hope Summit is for all of these organizations to gather in one place and be a resource to the community,” Gee said. “We look forward to hosting and hopefully gaining local volunteers who want to keep Charleston clean and beautiful.”

Connors acknowledged that domestic violence victims and MSH staff are always at risk of being harmed.

The Hope Summit will have both a virtual conference that can be accessed online by registering for the event, as well as an in-person conserva

Although the shelter’s location was a closely held secret, My Sister’s House, founded in 1979, is widely recognized as the leading tri-county agency that coordinates protec tive services for abused women. The North Charleston shelter opened in 1980. The decision to sell the area’s only shelter for domestic violence victims “while surprising to some, is a natural next step in the evolution of MSH,” Connors said in a March 4 email to the agency’s partners.

Connors said she could not comment on the former cli ent’s MSH experience.

“We offer the same set of services to all of our clients,” she said. “We have a full clinical team, therapy services and court advocate services. Palmetto Hope Network, said domestic violence victims are isolated in hotel rooms.

“We work on a robust safety plan with our clients and our staff because safety is our number one goal,” she said. That risk, she added, is constant whether families are housed in a central site or in hotel rooms.

Romney Business Center LLC of Charleston paid $1.5 million in July for the former shelter at 4951 Jenkins Ave. in North Charleston, according to Charleston County property records. Connors said the decision on what to do with the money is up to the MSH board of Charlestondirectors.attorney Edward Kronsberg, the registered agent for Romney Business Center, said the new owners do not have a specific plan on how they will use the prop erty. “We will work on it this week to try to come up with our plan,” he said. “We are working with our neighbors and the city and [we] hope to have [a plan] next month.”

Woodlands collaborates with Dorchester County by partnering with Keep Dorchester County Beautiful to pro vide recycling and trash receptacle service and contracting county police to direct traffic on and off the property, Iwinski said. It partners regularly with area companies such as Charleston Kayaking, On Purpose Adventures, Eco Tours, Sea Island Adventures and Middleton Place Equestrian Center, among others.

North Lake Venue and its parking are considerably further into the property than front acreage mainly used for previous events, he said. The road designated to offload cars from the highway will be eight times longer than the current road that files cars toward parking. The space was to be completed in time to host the Resonance Festival and Dirty Heads.

“There is an abundance of space that integrates with our forestry program allowing the public to enjoy the land, with ample parking,” Duell said.

Charleston County deputies arrested a man Sept. 3 who was shot while breaking into an Adams Run home. The homeowner fired a shot that hit the intruder’s left arm, but deputies found him alive. They also reportedly found a bag of cocaine. Police said he admitted that he was leaving a nearby party under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he broke into the house. He was arrested for burglary and cocaine possession.

Charleston police arrested a 37-year-old Charleston man for robbing a James Island bank Sept. 6. Police reported the suspect passed a note to tellers demanding money and escaped with an unknown amount of cash before police arrived. Detectives said they found the suspect later that night and arrested him.

At this point, it’s pretty clear there aren’t enough legislative votes to push through a total abortion ban without exceptions. They didn’t do it in the House two weeks ago. And last week, those who wanted to take more freedom from South Carolina’s women couldn’t get past a handful of moderate Republicans who said no to a bill without exceptions.

So give it a rest, guys. And we say “guys” because almost all of the emotional peacocks pushing for even tougher abortion legislation are white Republican men who can’t give birth and who can’t imagine the agony and conflict too many pregnant women go through.

Seems like they manufactured something new every year. They talked about Judeo-Christian ethics. They talked about the unborn and whether they had rights. Even as extremists periodically killed and bombed, they ratcheted up political rhetoric, moving from the notion of requiring informed consent before an abortion to requiring pregnant women to have a sonogram and hear a fetal heartbeat before making a choice on whether to have a baby. In recent years, the zealots started talking about how an unborn fetus was a person and had rights. Then they started proposing bans of one form or another.

ow that the General Assembly met and came up with different versions of yet another abortion ban that’s not substantively different from the one currently being challenged now in court, state lawmakers need to give us all a break. Let’s hope the S.C. House, now set to meet again on abortion on Sept. 27, will slow things down and wait for a court to decide if a current six-week “fetal heartbeat” ban is constitutional.

In 2021 after the U.S. Supreme Court boosted its conservative majority, it became clear the Court would take up a challenge to Roe v. Wade. In states like South Carolina, Republican men salivated for a way to appease their base and passed a six-week ban that would trigger into law if Roe were overturned. That happened this summer. And in pretty short order, a state judge issued an injunction to hold off on implementing this “fetal heartbeat” law until South Carolina judges decide on the ban’s constitutionality based on the state constitution.

But too many Republicans in the General Assembly want more, even though a new ban likely would face a similar court injunction pending the decision on whether South Carolina’s constitutional right to privacy trumps any ban.

People are tired of the constant hubbub on abortion. Let’s work on some other issues for a while now. Reducing poverty? Improving health care? Fixing crappy roads?

Unfortunately, we’re not too optimistic about that because anti-abortion zealots, well, have way too much zeal.

Through the years, South Carolina’s legislators increasingly pushed the envelope on abortion, which was constitutionally protected in 1973 by Roe v. Wade. In times when the state House and Senate were less tribal and had more moderates, leaders would throw a bone to the zealots and let them argue about abortion during slow legislative weeks.

“What’s happening here is we’re get ting the kind of renewed interest of being a small business district again,” said devel oper Ed Sutton. “With everything hap pening like a lot of people moving here and mom and pop locations being priced out of downtown, the nature of downtown is changing, and I really do feel kind of like now’s the time for Reynolds.”

The plan includes AstroTurf, plenty of trees for shade, an amphitheater for outdoor activities and a playground for kids to run around and explore.

Shuai Wang and his wife Corrie of the Park Circle restaurant Jackrabbit Filly recently announced plans to open King BBQ at 2029 Carver Ave. The Wang’s barbecue joint in the middle of this new Hipsterville is expected to merge the flavors of Chinese and Carolinia barbecue and a much larger space than Jackrabbit Filly.

Rebel Taqueria owner Lewis Kesaris said he is excited to see the changes happening to his Reynolds Avenue neighbors.

But after the Navy departed starting in the late 1990s, the hustle and bustle of the lively entertainment district waned and deteriorated. Now come big plans to return in a big way.

On the other side of King BBQ at the corner of Reynolds Avenue and Rivers Avenue is the remnants of L and W Thrift Store. Before that, the corner spot was the Goldmine Pawn & Bargain Store, a former landmark in the area. The building is slated for renova tion with plans that are multi-use including offices on the second floor, and a restaurant and bar on the ground. This corner building is expected to be the eye-catcher of the new Reynolds Avenue, with a theater-like lighted marquee stretching around the corner onto Carver Avenue to catch the eyes of night owls looking for a place to grab a drink.

For some business owners already in the area, such as Mr. Narwhal’s Magnificent Snoballs, much of the development has been seemingly kept under wraps. During an information session held by Charleston and North Charleston about the plans, much of the information, according to Mr. Narwhal’s business owner, who asked to be referred to as “Dunny,” seemed like it was “a closely held secret … or they just have not finalized any plans.”

“It kind of sends a signal to people like: ‘Hey, you’re entering a new area of town,’ ” Sutton said.

The next Hipsterville

“It wasn’t the nicest neighborhood when we first moved in here,” Kesaris said. “But people are more confident in coming to the area. It’s a good spot for people that live in Charleston that want a low key and nice little place to hang out.”

But that’s just one of the many planned projects in the area. Next to King BBQ’s future space is Rexton Street, an area known to flood. Clemson University’s Architectural Program created plans to address the area’s flooding and turn the surrounding areas into a parking lot and park for more community engagement.

Much in the same way of redevelopment of Upper King Street, Avondale or Park Circle, community members are worried about gentrification, according to the Rev. Bill Stanfield, CEO of Metanoia. The orga nization is an outreach group that main tains and preserves the community by making sure the neighborhood maintains a reflection of its current population. The organization does this by building leaders, Ms. Jackie serves up a frozen treat at Mr. Narwhal’s Magnificent Snoballs, a Reynolds Avenue business that serves the surrounding community

Rebel Taqueria owner Lewis Kesaris is excited for Reynolds Avenue to shine

“Redevelopment of a street like that doesn’t have to be an all or nothing proposi tion,” Stanfield said. “In other words, there are some uses that are really detrimental to the community, there are some uses that are very beneficial to the community and a lot of the uses that are sort of somewhere in between. Will something that’s coming in create opportunities for the current residents, or will it just sort of be there for somebody else?”

“You don’t have enough busi ness owners willing to come in on the ground level and wait it out,” he said.

charlestoncitypaper .com 11 nomicMetanoiadevelopment.currently owns three buildings along Reynolds Avenue, which includes Mr. Narwhal’s. By owning the buildings, said Stanfield, the organization can work with Black business owners and entrepreneurs so that it “can stay ahead of the curve.”

This redevelopment of Reynolds Avenue isn’t what drew Dunny to opening a Mr. Narwhal’s in the area, though. He said it was his dedication to the children of the community.

A Star returns

“I came in spe cifically for that reason not because I knew everything that was happening there. I was more concerned about the community and the kids in the area, because if they don’t have anywhere to go or like a safe haven, they can come in and get some snowballs and hang out for a little bit, get some quiet time.”

The next step after adding more local businesses in the area is more affordable housing, Sutton said: “We don’t need any more luxury apartments. Build something that workers can actually afford.” He hopes that workforce housing, retail businesses, restaurants and bars in the area would mitigate the traffic issue in the area, as the places people will need to go are within walking distance.

More businesses, affordable housing and easier transportation may all be important factors in redeveloping and revitalizing Reynolds Avenue, but what matters most is the voice of the community, Stanfield said.

The Star of America Motel was a thriving business in the 1960s and early 1970s, but fell into disrepair over the decades. In 2020, the motel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the state for being the first prefabricated and prefurnished motel in Charleston County and possibly the country.

“It was lively,” Lamond said. “Reynolds Avenue really was kind of North Charleston’s Main Street back when the Navy base was open. Maybe a little rough and tumble, but certainly a lot of open storefronts, restaurants and bars. It was a whole community and the community is still there. It just needs places to go to be together.”

The renovated Starlight Motor Inn will have 51 rooms, a restaurant, cocktail lounge and, coming in 2023, a pool and poolside bar. Eventually, Lamond added, he and Morrison want to renovate five cottages in the property adjacent to the inn and dub it “Starlight Village.” Each cottage will be available to rent like a motel room to “add a few more options,” Lamond said.

The former Star of America Motel at 3245 Rivers Ave. is returning in a big way, according to Walker Lamond, creative director of the Starlight Motor Inn. Lamond, along with his longtime partner Ham Morrison, are in the final stages of launching the Starlight Motor Inn in the former Star of America space. Morrison has renovated sev eral properties in the Charleston area, including the Redux Contemporary Art Center.

The motel is expected to open in November.

“What we’re hoping is that the building just kind of becomes what it always was, which is like a nice little landmark for the neighborhood, and a nice sign for what we think is gonna be a vibrant corner of North Charleston, kind of like it was back in the ‘60s,” he added.

Dungeons & Dragons creators Gary Gygax and Dave Ameson couldn’t have imagined the impact their fan tasy role playing game, which they created nearly 50 years ago, would have on pop culture. Once viewed as a gateway to satanism, is now socially acceptable, even spawning novels, cartoons and films. Though it’s gone through many iterations, the game’s core ingredients of problem-solving, creativity and improv remain unchanged.

For further proof, one only needs to look at the Charlestonbased, D&D-inspired improv group Yes Andventures. The ninemember crew — consisting of Jordan Blanton, Crystal Bruce, Adam James Craig, Patrick Gilmore, Stephan Hughes, Larry Perewiznyk, Lauren Minors, Belvin Olasov and Anna Lin — cur rently has a residency at the South of Broadway Theatre.

describe the types of stories they impro vise. The shows are longform improv, enhanced by elements of D&D including a Dungeon Master, costumes and props — most notably a large 20-sided die they affectionately call Gary. The Dungeon Master initiates the show by gathering inspiration from the audience to build a world in which players create an adven turous tale. How the tale twists and turns is dependent on the die.

They had their first ever show at South of Broadway in the summer of 2021. In the past year, they’ve performed at Theater 99, Old Trolley Road Theater, as well as being a part of the 2022 Charleston Comedy Festival and 2022 NerdFest.

“One lucky audience member is selected every show to roll the die for us at the request of the DM,” Lin said. “The format is fast-paced and fun for audiences, regardless of their knowledge of D&D or fantasy. We also make creative use of props and cos tumes — some of which are crafted by our cast — which isn’t typical, and adds a bit of whimsy to the show.”

The path to residency was a long and storied one for Yes Andventures. “We all had different inspirations that made us start improv,” Lin said. For Minors, improv was part of her high school theater classes, but she didn’t pursue it further until taking a drop-in class that reminded her how much she loved it. Patrick Gilmore started his improv journey thanks to a love of watching Whose Line is it Anyway and a desire to be a better Dungeon Master, the game organizer in D&D. Lin took her first improv class and instantly fell in love with the supportive, creative community. She loved creating a variety of charac ters and one-of-a kind musicals on stage while collectively building a story with teammates.“YesAndventures started as a D&D campaign during the onset of the pan demic,” Lin said. “It was originally envi sioned as a way to continue to hang out with nerdy like-minded improvisers while at home. Thanks to technology, we were able to play together online by creating a Discord server and online character sheets. We played a few different fifth edition campaigns, and rotated Dungeon Master duties. As the world began opening up again, we took our game campaign and made it into an improv show!”

A Los Angeles playwright has made good on a 30-year-old promise: Maude Callen, a humble 20th century midwife who served rural Berkeley County, will have her name in lights.

Nonprofit theater The A.D. Players will perform the play at The George Theater in Houston. It will preview Sept. 21 through Sept. 29, and officially open on Sept. 30. Performances run Wednesdays through Sundays until Oct. 23.

Casella first encountered Callen through Smith’s photographs in an early 1990s art exhibit in California.

“It was the beauty of the photos that captured me and the power of what this woman did in 1951,” Casella told the City Paper. “I was struck by the power of what one person was able to accomplish and then I learned the rest of the story … To dedicate her life to taking care of people, I was just overwhelmed by that.”

It was then that he made Sinclair a promise, the promise.

“I was just sold,” the actor said. “It’s a very humbling experience to try to play someone who doesn’t want the spotlight, who just wants to do the work … I want to be of ser vice like Maude was of service.”

said. While Smith was more of the flawedbut-driven journalist with a broken home and Callen led a very religious life, both had a sense of humor and were what Casella called workaholics. Callen, a Black woman, was also navigating the Jim Crow South in her service whereas Smith was a progres sive White man from up north.

derful,” Casella said.

Lindsay Street, a former reporter for the Charleston City Paper and Statehouse Report, is writing a book about Maude Callen’s life. She can be reached at lindsay.street@gmail.com.

Play featuring Charlestonarea midwife ‘Miss Maude’ to debut in Houston

Going to Houston is exactly what Sumpter Free Health Clinic Executive Director Libba Carroll of St. Stephens plans to do. Carroll grew up during a time when Callen was a one-woman force of health care in the area. There wasn’t a time that Carroll didn’t know the name “Maude Callen,” although she was better known as Miss Maude, Nurse Maude or just plain Nurse.

New York actor Rosalyn Coleman is playing Callen. She said she was introduced to the Berkeley County midwife through the play and Smith’s iconic photos.

Casella traveled to Pineville not long after he saw the photographs. He met with Callen’s son, Sinclair, and some midwives she“Itrained.justsaid tell me everything, tell me stories she told you, and it was just won

Headed to Houston

She said she hopes her representation of Maude will spark more interest in Callen’s story and the nursing profession.

“Everyone is going to fall in love with this woman because she’s what we all want to be. She has a sense of humor. She loves people but she’s also a human being,” said Casella, who has also written The Irish Curse. “That’s what makes great heroes even more heroic … that they are actually human.”

“You couldn’t pick two people that out wardly seem more different than Eugene Smith and Maude Callen and yet, in that six or eight weeks they were together, they real ized they were very, very similar,” Casella

For the last five years, Carroll and her nonprofit have worked to renovate Callen’s old clinic building in Pineville. The hope is to turn it into a community center and national landmark. Recently, the lights were turned back on the building that was once funded by Life magazine readers’ donations.

Callen

1923 until her death in 1990, Callen attended the births of hundreds, trained scores of midwives and gave care to vulnerable communities suf fering from tuberculosis, typhoid, malnutri tion and sexually transmitted diseases.

Life photographer W. Eugene Smith’s 1951 photo essay demonstrated the health care work South Carolina midwife Maude Callen provided in Pineville

The performance has no plans for live streaming, so short of you grabbing a nearly $300 roundtrip plane ticket from Charleston to Houston, you’ll have to wait for the per formance to be adapted into a major motion picture or, perhaps, live streamed from Broadway. Post-Broadway plans are compli cated and it’s unclear at this point whether the play will come to Charleston anytime soon, according to Casella.

Sinclair died in 2005.

“What great exposure for her work and her legacy,” Carroll said of the play. “She’s a very humble woman and I don’t think she would have ever thought her name would be on Broadway or would she have cared, but then again I care and I’m excited … Hopefully I live to see her name on Broadway, up in lights.”

“I promised Sinclair I would do this story and I said to him, ‘You may never see it yourself but I promise you, I will tell this story.’ She’s one of my heroes,” Casella said.

The theatrical world has never met a woman like Callen, writer Martin Casella said, but now it will with the world premiere of Miss Maude. The play will be on stage in Houston later this month but is destined for Broadway in New York City, Casella said.

So what will Yes Andventures shows consist of Lin enthusiastically described the proceedings: “Shows will start with an opening team or it will be a double Yes Andventures show. There will be a brief intermission before we finish the night with an ‘open jam’ hosted by the Yes Andventures team. People will put their name on a slip of paper when they enter the theater if they want to participate and at the end of the night, our team will call out names of the people participating in the jam. This is open to all, whether you have improv experience or not! It’s a great way to jam with others and have fun together on stage!”

What to look for

There always seems to be that one new restau rant that opens up and instantly becomes part of the neighborhood. Places like Berkeley’s in the Hampton Park Terrace neighborhood, Cold Shoulder in the West Ashley Northbridge area and Vern’s in CannonboroughElliotborough all recently opened this summer, and have made their impact in the community. These establishments are just off the beaten path of tourist destinations and right in the heart of local communities.

Bring your family or friends along to share small plates like smoked salmon dip with scallions or calamari, “something almost everyone gets to share,” Hudacsko said. But if you’re feeling really hungry, these “small plates” are also big enough to fill your belly, especially the spicy shrimp with Calabrian chili cream. Tail-on shrimp is served atop a large bed of polenta, sub merged in a sweet and spicy sauce. The creamy texture of the polenta is contrasted with the crunchiness of cashews. Fingers may get saucy as you separate the shrimp from the tail, though.

One of the goals when opening Berkeley’s, he said, was to become a neighborhood restaurant and not a “one-year anniversarytype” of restaurant. To achieve this, the dining experience is immersed in the neigh borhood, tucked on the corner of Rutledge Avenue and Huger Street and a block away from Hampton Park. Berkeley’s also curated its menu to include a variety of items from small plates and salads to sandwiches and pasta dishes, so there’s always something for someone. The sandwiches are a mixture of classic offerings like a traditional cheesesteak (or a mushroom cheesesteak) or chicken cutlet sammies. DESSERT: Callie’s In-Betweens from Graft Wine Shop. “You might be sur prised by the dessert, but really I am a huge carb and wine fan. … [Graft] has special Callie’s biscuits with chorizo and cheddar that, of course, pairs nicely with any red wine they have.”

West Ashley resident Kathleen House wants to sip summertime mojitos on the rooftop of The Dewberry with two celeb rities and an iconic Supreme Court jus tice before digging into a veggie-forward appetizer and an indulgent entree.

Swig & Swine specializes in freshsmoked meats with ice-cold drinks. The extensive drink menu has many local brews on tap, as well as signature cocktails to pair with their food. Try some St. Louis ribs or the pork rind nachos for a messy good time.

DRINK: Hibiscus Mojito from The Dewberry. “Sunset at The Dewberry [rooftop] is spectacular. Add in the Hibiscus Mojito and what more do you need? It is very refreshing!”

APPETIZER: Hen of the woods mush rooms, ginger and spring onion. “If you haven’t been to Vern’s yet, you have to go. [The mushrooms] were cooked perfectly, with a delicious topping of spring onions.”

“Starting with our opening night, I felt like it was a large majority of people within this direct vicinity of downtown,” Bethany said. “Being tucked into a neighborhood, I feel like having that sort of charming corner location really speaks to being this neigh borhood restaurant.”

housed Trattoria Lucca, an Italian restaurant.“Wefeltvery grateful and lucky to take over a second generation restaurant space that had a really positive connotation and a lot of memories to associate with it,” she added. “It’s fun to see people kind of walk in and be like, ‘Oh, man, I loved Lucca. I’m so excited to be here again,’ and then try out a newTherestaurant.”diningexperience is meant to be fam ily-style, with everyone at the table digging into dishes like gnocchetti sardi with walnut pesto or the bavette steak with balsamic and horseradish, which can be served for brunch with a sunny side up egg or dinner with some shallots for some extra sharpness.

Husband and wife duo Daniel “Dano” and Bethany Heinze officially opened their new American bistro Vern’s at 41 Bogard St. July 15. Less than two months later, Charleston foodies and tourists have been raving about the new downtown spot.

Every morning, especially on holidays, a line of hungry customers forms out the door, all eagerly waiting for what some have called “charcuterie in a sandwich.” Using meats from Smoking Goose Meatery in Indiana, local vegetables from up-andcoming hydroponic farm King Tide Farms, homemade truffle cream and imported cheeses, Edmunds make all of the sand wiches by hand or to order if all the pre made ones have sold out.

“I’m extremely humbled,” Edmunds said. “For someone like me to come in and be so wildly accepted by actual Charlestonians and not just transients or college students, it’sColdamazing.”Shoulder is open at 8 a.m. Sunday through Monday. Keep an eye on Instagram @coldshouldergourmet for specials and updates on when the sandwiches sell out.

Cold Shoulder

King Tide Farms brings unique produce to Edmunds, like red vein sorrel (a citrusforward vegetable), Cold Shoulder will run weekend or daily specials. Other days, Edmunds gets hit with a spark of creative energy and creates specials based on what he has in stock or what he can get. His latest spe cial, offered Sept. 8, was a sandwich stuffed with gorgonzola tosi (a creamy blue cheese), capocollo (a cured pork cold cut), truffle honey and fresh greens from King Tide.

For those who know about Cold Shoulder, know to arrive early. And for those who don’t, Edmunds says, “Don’t be mad, be early.”

The contemporary American restau rant took over the space that formerly

Other sandwiches include the Something Classic, Something Else, Something Simple, Something Sweet (Nutella and pow dered sugar), Something Vegetarian and Something Vegan, all served on fresh-baked focaccia bread from Saffron Bakery.

The kitchen is helmed and thoughtfully prepared by Dano, who was the chef de cuisine at former Charleston establishment McCrady’s. However, the drink list, helmed by Bethany who was the bar manager at McCrady’s, prepared an extensive and detailed wine list to pair with the New American cuisine.

The wines are categorized by sparkling, red, whites and more, and break down even further to specific flavor notes. There’s more than just wine to pair with the food, though. Vern’s offers low-abv drinks like the seasonal vermouth highball, currently made with the vidte blanco, mint and lime leaf for a refreshing tarty cocktail. Beers, teas, espresso and sodas are also available.

Vern’s is open from 5-10 p.m., Thursday to Monday with brunch available from 12-2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Hudacsko said the secret to keep cus tomers coming back is the staff: “When we hire people, we try to hire people that we think are going to be great ambassadors of [connecting with customers],” he said. “I would love for them to know everything about the wine and everything about the food, but really, what I want is can you be attentive and friendly? And can you get to know the people who come in here every day? Because that’s important to us.”

“I’ve just been getting so much love from people coming out,” he added. “Other food and beverage members get excited to come and that gets me pumped. It makes me happy to come into work every day.”

Other brunch highlights include the sesame seed pancakes, a fluffy and airy three-pancake stack with whipped ricotta and local peaches and peach jam. Dinner menu items include skewered lamb shoulder with red vein sorrel for a balance of umami and acid.

His most popular sandwich, the Something Spicy, is made with nduja (a spicy, spreadable pork sausage), Toscanino piccante salami, greens, parmesan, truffle cream and truffle hot sauce. The spicy cured meats are cut with the richness of the truffle cream and herbaceous focaccia bread, so even if you’re not a huge fan of spice, it’s worth checking out. Other sandwiches, like the Something Gourmet, add a little sweet ness with truffle honey to the prosciutto, Parmesan and local greens combo.

Owner and solo sandwich-maker Craig Edmunds runs his little sammie shop by himself. Edmunds is behind his meat slicer every morning at 5 a.m. to crank out as many sandwiches as one man can make before opening at 8 a.m. Some days he sells out by 1 p.m.; other days (like on Labor Day), he’s sold out by 9:30 a.m.

Cold Shoulder also offers snack items and drinks to pair with the gourmet sandwiches. Items range from local places like pastries from Nonna Bachi or Lowcountry Kettle Chips to imported items like Hattie B’s hot chicken skins or The Red Seed’s Toasted Corn.

Berkeley’s is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday and Monday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I will remind you about a potential superpower that is your birthright to develop: You can help people to act in service to the deepest truths and strongest love. You can even teach them how to do it. Have you been ripening this talent in 2022? Have you been bringing it more to the forefront of your relationships? I hope so. The coming months will stir you to go further than ever before in expressing this gift. For best results, take a vow to nurture the deepest truths and strongest love in all your thoughts and dealings with others.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your mind is some times a lush and beautiful maze that you get lost in. Is that a problem? Now and then it is, yes. But just as often, it’s an entertaining blessing. As you wan der around amidst the lavish finery, not quite sure of where you are or where you’re going, you often make discoveries that rouse your half-dormant potentials. You luckily stumble into unforeseen insights you didn’t realize you needed to know. I believe the description I just articulated fits your current ramble through the amazing maze. My advice: Don’t be in a mad rush to escape. Allow this dizzying but dazzling expedition to offer you all its rich teachings.

Homework: I invite you to send a blessing to someone you regard as challenging to bless. Testify: Newsletter.FreeWillAstrology.com

will have plenty of room to germinate. The best way to do that is to finish the old process as completely as possible.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): According to Libran poet T. S. Eliot, “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a begin ning. The end is where we start from.” Those are your guiding thoughts for the coming days, Libra. You’re almost ready to start fresh; you’re on the verge of being able to start planning your launch date or grand opening. Now all you have to do is create a big crisp emptiness where the next phase

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Please promise me you will respect and revere your glorious star power in the coming weeks. I feel it’s important, both to you and those whose lives you touch, that you exalt and exult in your access to your magnificence. For everyone’s benefit, you should play freely with the art of being majestic and regal and sovereign. To do this right, you must refrain from indulging in trivial wishes, passing fancies and minor attractions. You must give yourself to what’s stellar. You must serve your holiest longings, your riveting dreams and your thrilling hopes.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian author Richard Ford has advice for writers: “Find what causes a commotion in your heart. Find a way to write about that.” I will amend his counsel to apply to all of you non-writers, as well. By my reckoning, the coming weeks will be prime time to be gleefully hon est as you identify what causes commotions in your heart. Why should you do that? Because it will lead you to the good decisions you need to make in the coming months. As you attend to this holy homework, I suggest you direct the following invitation to the uni verse: “Beguile me, mystify me, delight me, fascinate me and rouse me to feel deep, delicious feelings.”

ARIES (March 21-April 19): My reader Monica Ballard has this advice for you Aries folks: “If you don’t vividly ask for and eagerly welcome the gifts the Universe has in store for you, you may have to settle for trinkets and baubles. So never settle.” That’s always useful counsel for you Rams. And in the coming weeks, you will be wise to heed it with extra intensity. Here’s a good metaphor to spur you on: Don’t fill up on junk snacks or glitzy hors d’oeuvres. Instead, hold out for gourmet feasts fea turing healthy, delectable entrées.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Tips to get the most out of the next six weeks: 1. Be the cau tiously optimistic voice of reason. Be the methodi cal motivator who prods and inspires. Organize as you uplift. Encourage others as you build efficiency.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I am lonely, yet not everybody will do,” observed Piscean author Anaïs Nin. “Some people fill the gaps, and others empha size my loneliness,” she concluded. According to my reading of the astrological omens, Pisces, it’s your task right now to identify which people intensify your loneliness and which really do fill the gaps. And then devote yourself with extra care to cultivating your connections with the gap-fillers. Loneliness is some times a good thing — a state that helps you renew and deepen your communion with your deep self. But I don’t belief that’s your assignment these days. Instead, you’ll be wise to experience intimacy that enriches your sense of feeling at home in the world. You’ll thrive by consorting with allies who sweeten your love of life.

4. Seek new ways to experience euphoria and enchantment, with an emphasis on what pleasures will also make you healthier.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It’s impossible to be perfect. It’s neither healthy nor productive to obsess on perfectionism. You know these things. You understand you can’t afford to get bogged down in overthinking and overreaching and overpolishing. And when you are at your best, you sublimate such manic urges. You transform them into the elegant intention to clarify and refine and refresh. With grace and care, you express useful beauty instead of aim ing for hyper-immaculate precision. I believe that in the coming weeks, dear Virgo, you will be a master of these services — skilled at performing them for yourself and others.

2. Don’t take other people’s apparent stupidity or rudeness as personal affronts. Try to understand how the suffering they have endured may have led to their behavior. 3. Be your own father. Guide your self as a wise and benevolent male elder would.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Now and then, you slip into phases when you’re poised on the brink of either self-damage or self-discovery. You wobble and lurch on the borderline where self-undoing vies with self-creation. Whenever this situation arises, here are key questions to ask yourself: Is there a strategy you can implement to ensure that you glide into self-discovery and self-creation? Is there a hom ing thought that will lure you away from the perverse temptations of self-damage and self-undoing? The answers to these queries are always yes — if you regard love as your top priority and if you serve the cause of love over every other consideration.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Poetry is a lifecherishing force,” said Pulitzer Prize-winner Mary Oliver, who published 33 volumes of poetry and read hundreds of other poets. Her statement isn’t true for everyone, of course. To reach the point where read ing poetry provides our souls with nourishment, we may have to work hard to learn how to appreciate it. Some of us don’t have the leisure or temperament to do so. In any case, Cancerian, what are your lifecherishing forces? What influences inspire you to know and feel all that’s most precious about your time on earth? Now would be an excellent time to ruminate on those treasures — and take steps to nurture them with tender ingenuity.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Sometimes serendipity is just intention unmasked,” said Sagittarian author Elizabeth Berg. I suspect her theory will be true for you in the coming weeks. You have done an adroit job of formulating your intentions and collecting the information you need to carry out your intentions. What may be best now is to relax your focus as you make room for life to respond to your diligent preparations. “I’m a great believer in luck,” said my Uncle Ned. “I’ve found that the harder I work, the more luck I have.” He was correct, but it’s also true that luck sometimes surges your way when you’ve taken a break from your hard work.

Farrelly said that Stevens’ Americana influence was just one of many styles that the band has incorporated over its years of constantly evolving and changing. The lineup has seen a few bluegrass musicians and even an orchestral violinist.

Both Stevens and Farrelly said that the band’s objective is to make every gig feel like a night out at a traditional Irish pub, whether they’re playing in one or not.

Ale does, blending traditional Irish folk with Americana and just a bit of ragged punk intensity. Sinead Farrelly’s accordion swells on the track and her tin whistle adds the perfect touch of the Irish to Stevens’ woeful tale.

At the time, Stevens didn’t know a lot about Irish music other than the classic Celt-punk outfit the Pogues, but he decided to give it a shot.

“It was kind of new territory,” he said, “but come to find out they were more than just an Irish band. It’s a fusion of Irish and Americana and all these things, and we justByclicked.”thetime Stevens joined, Farrelly had already been in the band for a few years, and she had the background for it.

“Both of my parents are actually from Ireland,” she said, “and I grew up in the New York-New Jersey area where there’s

“To me it feels like I’m sitting down with a group of friends, and we’re in an old Irish pub and we’re just playing for ourselves and for each other,” Farrelly said. “But all the people in the pub or wherever we are become part of our group. It’s great to be able to sit and share the music … and do what we love doing together as a band.”

Moonlight Ale’s guitarist and mandolin player George Stevens wrote the song, which tells of a despondent man alone in a lively pub contemplating his burdens. Overwhelmed by life, he finds catharsis in hurling an empty pint glass into a mirror, then leaves the bar feeling oddly uplifted.

“I was at a bar here locally,” Stevens said. “It was a packed night. The bar was just good energy, a lot of happy people. Then all of a sudden there was just this smash, like breaking glass, and it wasn’t just like some body dropped a glass. It was very forceful. Everybody in the whole bar got quiet and turned, and this guy got up and walked out, and the bartender’s barking after him. And that was where I drew the song from.”

Stevens actually witnessed a moment like this nearly a decade ago, and it stayed with him ever since.

If you judge a song by how well you can sing along with it, then Moonlight Ale’s new song “Banned for Life” that drops Sept. 16 is a winner. The local alt-folk outfit’s woozy, wave tune is one that a bar full of people could sway to as the lyrics tell a dark-but-funny tale.

“Banned For Life” is just the most recent iteration of what Moonlight Ale has been doing for more than 20 years. McElligot formed the band back in 2000 and a revolving cast of musicians and friends came and went. Stevens joined the group in 2017 to round out the lineup that included bassist Chuck Hamilton and drummer Patrick Brown in addition to McElligot and Farrelly. The new song features Mount Pleasant singer-songwriter Becca Bessinger and violinist James Anderson.

‘Big things to come’ for altcountry artist Kat Velasco

BESTSTATION!RADIO

Local alt-country singer-songwriter Kat Velasco developed a love of musical theater as a kid growing up in Columbia. “I’ve basi cally been performing since I was about 5 years old,” she said. In high school, Velasco competed in the Miss South Carolina Teen USA pageant, thriving in the talent portion of the Aftercompetition.graduating high school, however, Velasco put performing on the backburner. “My ultimate goal was always to be a singer,” she said. “But I didn’t really know how to go about doing that. I think I just got caught up in life.”

Velasco’s voice is big and bold, and her songs contain a subtle country flair con trasted against pop hooks. “I think with my background in musical theater, I have a huge voice,” she said. “Call Me” exemplifies her ability to belt with soulful intention.

After spending some time at the University of Alabama, she moved back to South Carolina, got her associate’s degree and settled into a career in finance.

Velasco is excited about her plans to release another single this winter and announce 2023 show dates within the next few months. “Big things are to come,” she said. —Kate Byran

Velasco recorded “Call Me,” her latest single, at Starstruck Entertainment in Nashville. Seasoned producer Andy Sheridan pitched it to her, and she learned the song on the car ride to the Music City.

In early 2021, Velasco booked a ses sion with Columbia producer Kenny McWilliams at Archer Avenue Studios. Five months later, “Cliché Country Song” was released into the world. “I actually got a lot of good feedback for my first song, and I kept writing and I kept booking sessions,” she said. “And it grew from there.”

The “Call Me” video shows a woman growing frustrated with a man who is roman tically interested in her, but only reaches out via social media. It emphasizes the importance of making a concrete effort to connect. “To pick up the phone and call or see each other in person, it just means so much more,” she said.

Kat Velasco’s pop sheened vocals give her new single “Call Me” a sleek finish

“It’s kind of like you’re acting, like you’re trying to get yourself into the meaning of the person who wrote this song and what they mean by it,” she said, “And then try to make your own so that you can really con nect with the song.”

It wasn’t until the pandemic that Velasco reconsidered her direction. A breakup during the shutdown left her feeling isolated. “I started journaling and just really getting my thoughts on paper,” she said. One entry turned into a song that she sang to her par ents, who insisted that she record it.

Velasco recently filmed a music video for “Call Me.” It was directed by Matt Crum, who also shot the video for “Waiting for Forever,” a song by Velasco and her boyfriend and fellow Charleston musician Greg Keys.
