Emily Cox, a local interior architectural designer at Onyx Design Collaborative and leader of Building Badasses, has created a four-hour Construction 101 Crash Course seminar geared toward female homeowners interested in learning about construction.

The seminar introduces topics like construction contracts, how to read architectural drawings, construction communication best practices, explanations of typical design/construction team roles and more. It will also include a Q&A Cox session during which participants can share construction plans and receive feedback and advice from Cox. “The class teaches you that this isn’t neurosurgery, it’s just connecting two-by-fours.

You can understand it, learn the vocabulary to communicate effectively and assess if it’s done properly,” she said. “It’s not another language — it’s just another set of terms.”

This presumed difference in familiarity with construction-related topics between men and women isn’t an inherent gender trait; it’s the result of deeply ingrained gender biases and an intergenerational gap in knowledge.

Women have made big strides in securing more rights over the last century, but don’t forget, it wasn’t until 1974 that a woman

could receive a line of credit without a male co-signer. And it took another seven years before it became illegal for a husband to take out second mortgages on property jointly owned with his wife without her permission.

“It’s within living memory that women obtained these rights,” Cox said. “Never before have women owned and maintained property as we have the opportunity to in this generation, but we aren’t culturally conditioned to know how to interact with the construction industry.”

Cox’s seminar intends to give women the right tools to build confidence and knowledge before beginning a renovation or new building project.

The female experience of having something “mansplained” partially inspired the need for the seminar.

Mansplaining is a term used when a man explains, and often oversimplifies, a concept to a woman in a patronizing or condescending manner. It happens a lot, particularly when working in a maledominated industry or participating in an activity society has deemed part of the male sphere — like visiting the auto part store, the mechanic or getting involved in construction.

The National Association of Realtors reported that single women made up the second largest group of homebuyers in 2020 at 17%, just behind married couples. So it’s important for female homeowners to have access to home improvement knowledge and the confidence to navigate the interviewing, hiring and assessment process.

Cox created Building Badasses, a group for women working in all aspects of the construction industry, as a way to network and share information and recommendations through a private Facebook group and monthly meetings. When the group wasn’t able to meet face-to-face during the pandemic, Cox started a Building Badasses podcast to keep members informed.

“The reception for Building Badasses has been so positive that we realized we could also do a really great job of serving the needs of female homeowners,” she said. “I think it’s an important opportunity to educate and empower women through teaching them how the construction industry works, so they can be educated consumers.”

Participants can attend the session in person at The Circle coworking space in North Charleston or join the class via Zoom. These one-day, four-hour sessions take place Aug. 28, Sept. 25 and Oct. 23.

After the seminar, participants will have access to the Building Badasses Facebook group for continued support from other women in the industry.

Cox also said to be on the lookout for future course offerings including 60 Days to Dream Design.

The Charleston Animal Society announced it has more than triple the number of animals they have the room to house at its shelter in North Charleston, caring for over 700 animals despite only having the space for about 230.

While summer months are typically crowded for the shelter, this year has been particularly harsh. Hundreds of dogs, cats and exotic pets are waiting for their “forever homes,” officials said.

To help with the emergency, the Charleston Animal Society is temporarily waiving the fee for adoption, so all cats and dogs one year old or older are free to adopt.

The District 4 contest between incumbent Robert Mitchell and challenger Tim Weber is one of three hot races shaping up for November

Mitchell draws challenger focused on violent crime Charleston candidate filings continued last week, with one longtime councilman in a growing downtown district getting a challenger and another member filing to run for reelection.

A resident and landlord in Charleston’s Eastside neighborhood for 17 years, Tim Weber said his campaign for District 4 boils down to crime — specifically murders — an issue he said has Weber not gotten adequate attention.

Weber filed paperwork to challenge longtime Councilman Robert Mitchell Aug. 10.

Weber didn’t have exact crime numbers from District 4 when he spoke with the City Paper, but said the number of murders in the area in the past 20 years was “totally unacceptable.”

“I don’t see that it’s brought up hardly ever in city discussions and no [there’s] no plan whatsoever to do something,” he told the City Paper this week.

Charleston Police Department crime data shows homicides citywide remained steady 2014-2019, before spiking in 2020, part of a state and national trend of increased violent crime.

If elected, Weber said he’d identify murder hotspots and start with education and employment initiatives to stem violence.

“If those things don’t work, then we need to go in there with some enforcement and some heavy-handed actions to make sure that they get sentences, or whatever, accordingly,” he said.

Weber does not have any law-enforcement background. The retired merchant marine owns at least eight properties downtown, including his home on South Street.

Weber made news in 2019 when surveillance cameras on one of his prop-

erties on Hanover Street recorded a shooting around 7:30 p.m. one evening that left a King Street restaurant worker dead. Since then, tensions have run high over the path and rate of change in the neighborhood.

Mitchell, councilman since 2002, said everyone has the right to run for office, but stood by his time as an elected official, noting the Eastside is just one neighborhood in District 4 and crime is an issue everywhere.

“You have to represent all the people, Mitchell and see, I represent everybody who lives in District 4-matters not who they are, doesn’t make no difference,” he said Friday.

District 4 is one of two downtown-only districts, encompassing most of the eastern side of the peninsula north of Calhoun Street. The area has experienced noticeable growth in the past decade, from high-rise apartments to trendy restaurants and more on the way.

Weber said Mitchell has “done what’s needed to be done over the years, but I just think that it’s time to move forward with some new ideas and some new, fresh blood.”

Mitchell’s last contested election came in 2013, when he won a two-candidate contest with less than 350 votes. Off-year municipal elections typically draw far fewer voters than major election years.

Mitchell and Weber’s election is one of three contested council races shaping up for November with filing officially closed as of Monday. Incumbent West Ashley Councilman Harry Griffin will face attorney Stephen Bowden in District 10. In District 12, incumbent Carol Jackson will be opposed by real estate agent Caroline Parker. —Sam Spence

Mitch Pugh, executive editor of The Post and Courier has led the daily since 2013

P&C executive editor takes job with Chicago Tribune Post and Courier executive editor Mitch Pugh will take a similar job with the Chicago Tribune at the end of the month, with the storied Midwest paper now in a new era under hedge-fund ownership.

Since joining the P&C in 2013, Pugh’s time in Charleston included the newspaper winning a 2015 Pulitzer Prize for publicservice reporting with a series documenting the conditions that made South Carolina one of the nation’s deadliest states for women. The paper has been a Pulitzer finalist four times since 2013.

Tribune general manager Par Ridder told employees Pugh was chosen because of “his significant journalistic achievements, leadership skills and experience driving digital subscriber growth,” according to the paper.

The 150-person Tribune newsroom is more than double the size of the P&C’s statewide masthead of journalists, which

has expanded into Columbia, Greenville and Myrtle Beach under Pugh’s leadership.

P&C also owns the Free Times weekly in Columbia.

While the P&C proudly bills itself as “family-owned,” Pugh lands at the Chicago Tribune six months after it was purchased by a New York-based hedge fund, Alden Global Capital. More than 40 Tribune journalists have accepted voluntary buyouts in recent months, “leading to a shuffling of talent to fill key vacancies,” the paper reported last Tuesday.

P&C managing editor Autumn Phillips will take over as editor-in-chief, according to the paper.

Pugh’s departure is the latest for the Charleston daily, which has also recently seen food editor and restaurant critic Hanna Raskin leave, along with a number of rank-and-file reporters. —Sam Spence

South Carolina legislators met Aug. 17 to begin talks on how more than $3 billion in federal funds will be spent, with House lawmakers convening Tuesday in Columbia.

On the agenda for the SRS and ARPA Appropriations Ad Hoc Committee was how nearly $2.5 billion from the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) passed by Congress will be spent in the Palmetto State, as well as $525 million from a U.S. Department of Energy settlement over radioactive waste stashed at the federal Savannah River Site.

Generally, ARPA funds can be used for COVID-19 response, public-health and publicsector services and infrastructure spending on water, sewer and broadband needs.

Early talk on one possible use of ARPA funds includes picking up the tab on a $350 million portion of a massive container port

expansion in North Charleston. Lawmakers have already pledged $200 million in state money to the project, which drew some criticism as it was briskly folded into state appropriations earlier this year.

“The virus has had an enormous impact on the economy, as you know, with logistics and the supply chain and things to help to streamline and facilitate that sort of flow we believe will be allowable,” Gov. Henry McMaster told The State in July.

Lawmakers will also start discussions on how to dole out $525 million from a Department of Energy settlement over nuclear waste kept past federal deadlines at the Savannah River Site near Aiken. Some $75 million of the $600-million-overall deal has already been set aside for private lawyers hired by Attorney General Alan Wilson. —Sam Spence

State senators in North Charleston Aug. 10 heard from voters about split precincts, preserving geographic and cultural communities and above all else, ending political gerrymandering.

About 100 people gathered at Trident Tech in North Charleston, as state lawmakers gear up to redraw their own district lines with new census data. Charleston’s existing districts — lamented for irregular shapes and illogical boundaries — are expected to change some with added growth. But the 10-year redistricting process rarely changes much, and when it does, it often favors the majority party, a process known as gerrymandering.

“Are we just here to look good?” asked George Tempel, former chair of Charleston County Democratic Party, echoing sentiments of more than two dozen speakers before him. Others ruminated on competitive elections and advocated for local neighborhoods and communities.

State Sen. Luke Rankin, R-Conway, framed the meeting as a chance for residents to make comments for the public record about how their communities could be affected by redistricting. Members of the Senate Redistricting Subcommittee, which Rankin chairs, are hosting similar meetings across the state. Video footage of the hearing is available online.

The 41 Lowcountry residents who spoke ranged from engaged citizens to political officials, like Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin, to cultural leaders, like Queen Quet of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Some made the case for political boundaries that respect distinct cultural and socioeconomic

enclaves within the state, described as “communities of interest” under federal law.

“Not only is it that our language is unique, which brings millions of tourists to this area every year, but also our cultural communities from our praise houses to the fact that we still bury along the Intracoastal Waterway and along those marsh-ways,” Queen Quet said, mentioning St. Helena Island specifically. “We have a culture in common here that we want to make sure is sustained.”

Other residents spent their five-minute allotment describing how grouping disparate neighboring communities into the same districts can diminish their electoral impacts.

“Because of this thing called gerrymandering, the system allows the representative to pick their voters instead of the voters picking their representatives,” said Tim Lewis, chair of the Dorchester County Democratic Party.

Francis Marion Beylotte, a West Ashley resident who ran for school board in 2020, was skeptical any of the speeches and grandstanding would have any impact when lawmakers started making maps, calling the proceedings a “dog and pony show.”

“When I look at this map … it makes no sense whatsoever. And the thing is, I know that you know that,” he told the senators on the dais. “But I think, at the end of the day, nothing is going to change.”

The Senate held its final meetings Aug. 11 in Conway and Aug. 12 in Aiken.

Charleston County School District’s Board of Trustees voted Monday to require everyone inside school facilities as the first day of fall classes approaches Wednesday and COVID-19 case numbers continue climbing. Charleston City Council considered a similar rule for all public facilities Tuesday. Both moves came in defiance of rules enacted by state politicians to headoff virus-related precautions.

District leaders met in executive session for more than two hours during a special board meeting added to the schedule Monday and took no other action than to suspend its rules to pass the mask requirement. North Charleston Trustee Cindy Bohn Coats, the only vote against the proposal, said she thought enforcement would be an issue.

Trustee Eric Mack said he and his colleagues received “medical insight” about the rapidly spreading delta variant, as well as “legal advice” related to a state law passed to bar districts from enacting mask mandates.

“After further discussion and in talking — in the dialogues with that — we came out with this motion today to get us through the next 60 days, at least, in protection with our staff and our students,” Mack said.

Trustee Courtney Waters said the board was told the delta variant is expected to peak in September and decline after that.

A meeting called for Tuesday was canceled after trustees took action Monday evening.

Some aspects of back-to-school season are already feeling the impacts of the COVID-19 spike: A planned fall football season kickoff event last week was canceled after more than half the teams pulled out over COVID-19 concerns.

Monday’s meeting came hours after Charleston City Council added an emergency ordinance to its Tuesday agenda to pass a citywide mask mandate as well, with its members saying they were prepared to go to court to enact the public safety measure.

Last week, state Attorney General Alan Wilson took issue with measures passed by the City of Columbia that would have required public school students to wear masks. Monday, state Democrats and a bipartisan group of state senators began calling on the legislature’s GOP leaders to bring lawmakers back to Columbia to repeal a budget proviso that banned local action related to schools.

As an emergency ordinance, Charleston City Council’s proposal needed approval from two-thirds of its members and would immediately take effect for 60 days.

A West Ashley man told officers that God placed a particular apartment complex there for him, as he was his son. Police reportedly reminded him that he was not actually a resident of the complex and was trespassing, to which the man replied he was actually a police officer and that he “rules the world.”

RUNNERS UP Police found excessive amounts of methamphetamine and heroin in a downtown woman’s car. She told officers that a man in an alleyway had given it all to her for free because she was “cute.” The fact that police put the word “cute” in quotation marks is telling.

A downtown man reported his trailer stolen, and was greatly concerned about the contents, especially the large duffel bag full of Christmas decorations. We don’t want to jump the gun on anything, but we want to be the first ones to report it if this turns out to be the Grinch.

How Charleston’s City Plan affects us all C harleston leaders will make final changes to the city’s comprehensive plan in the coming weeks. Quite a bit has changed in Charleston since the plan was last revised in 2011 — the tourism economy has exploded, development is changing how our city looks and feels, and the impact of climate change and sea-level rise grows more apparent every day.

Normally, 10-year updates to the comprehensive plan are all-encompassing, general guidelines for how we can bend known forces for change in a direction that enhances quality of life for the most people possible. But this year’s plan records critical observations on the urgent situation posed by a changing climate that’s making life harder for many, exacerbating existing inequality, all while the cost of living goes up.

The plan is under consideration by city council as we speak, and a few changes are expected before it’s approved. But here are four ways Charleston’s 2021 City Plan is different and stands to affect residents in and outside the city limits.

1. Resilience and equity is at the center.

Local governments are now required to examine resiliency as part of the comprehensive planning process, thanks to a bipartisan 2020 bill led by Charleston-area senators. City officials rightfully connected equity to that assessment — adding another layer of consideration for all city-level actions. From housing affordability to protecting cultural resources, the City Plan’s extensive focus on resilience and equity could mean quality of life improvements for some over the next 10 years that would have otherwise gone ignored.

2. Environmental justice is a key consideration.

Environmental justice is connected to equity, and the climate crisis is inextricably connected to the future of our city. It’s critically important to attempt to mitigate the impact of changes for some rather than to push off those worries to communities already hurt by discrimination and gentrification.

3. It prioritizes building at higher elevations.

Continued building over the last generation has hastened flooding and stormwater issues for low-lying communities, particularly as development advances in the suburbs. It’s a lesson we learned far too late, as we’ve seen in the multimillion dollar scramble to rework West Ashley’s Church Creek basin. Knowing the city can’t and shouldn’t try to pause progress, the new City Plan instead prioritizes dense development in areas of higher elevation, allowing low-lying areas to help with stormwater retention.

4. Heavily impacted areas are off the peninsula.

Charlestonians on the Cainhoy peninsula near Daniel Island, along with Johns Islanders, have lived on the front line of in-migration, with both areas nearly doubling in population since 2010. West Ashley continues to feel significant growth.

But landlocked and expensive, the peninsula has seen a fraction of growth experienced elsewhere. City plans call for more focus on outlying areas to handle growth.

The 160-page Charleston City Plan provides an admirable blueprint for the next 10 years in Charleston. Now it’s up to city leaders to make sure the pieces are in place to make it happen.

What happened to courage and pride in South Carolina? By Andy Brack More than 10,000 South Carolinians have died in the last year and a half from COVID-19. With the availability of incredibly effective vaccines and the common-sense step of wearing masks in crowded places, we have the tools to win the COVID War. But too many people will continue to die because too many still aren’t vaccinated and too many get huffy about wearing masks when indoors. They talk about personal freedom instead of respecting community safety. They’re getting played by false internet memes circulated by Russians and anti-vaxxers, instead of believing cold, hard, scientific facts. They conveniently forget how the vaccines they got when they were kids kept them from getting horrible diseases like polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria and smallpox.

Vaccines work. Masking works. But South Carolina, like many Southern red states, has among the lowest vaccination rates in the country. This forces us to ask: Where is our sense of pride, our sense of dignity? Do we always have to be at the bottom of lists, especially when it’s relatively easy to get our state out of the cellar by getting people vaccinated?

Furthermore, if more people will get vaccinated and get to the top of the list, families throughout the state will be safer. Hospitals will be able to get back to treating people’s regular problems, not a pandemic. If the half of eligible South Carolinians who aren’t vaccinated get the shots, it probably would take just two months to create a safe environment across the state, which would generate a relatively quick return to normal instead of the slow drip of the continuing contagion that is locking down our day-to-day life and business.

People across South Carolina have pride in the state’s beautiful places, football teams, heritage, history, sense of independence and quality of life. Why can’t we have a statewide sense of pride in beating COVID-19? Why can’t everyone pull together, protect their families, protect their neighbors and protect their communities so we can get back to normal? We have the tools.

There’s more. Not only do citizens have a responsibility to get vaccinated, our leaders need to have the courage to lead and get beyond the emotional, political rhetoric that has infected common-sense, science-based reasons to get vaccinated and wear masks until things are safer.

stops with campaign rallies in communities across the state to pump up the volume on vaccinations and masks, he makes meek suggestions as more people get the disease.

We also haven’t seen many state legislators pushing statewide safety against the pandemic.

Rather, they hunker down, too afraid to admit they were wrong to pass an anti-mask mandate which will lead to more school children getting COVID-19 until they can get vaccinated.

About the only leadership has come from Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and Columbia City Council, along with Charleston County School District, which moved to require masks in schools.

That’s leadership. And all of our political leaders need to be leading now, not hiding behind some poll or anti-science ideology. More cities and counties need to challenge the state’s dumb anti-masking law to lead our state toward safety.

This disease doesn’t care about party. But if we get vaccinated — and wear a mask — we can make a quicker return to normal. Let’s get it done.

hat was supposed to be a post-pandemic return to school in 2021 has become a repeat of 2020, but without some of the safety precautions of last year. And with preexisting problems in schools having been exacerbated by the pandemic, many experts and school leaders have all but given up on hope for a safe return.

Still, teachers and administrators are doing what they can. Though legislative orders prohibit schools from implementing mask mandates in schools, most districts have formally recommended masking up indoors, and some school districts, including Richland and Charleston counties, have mandated masks in defiance of the legislature’s proviso. And, quarantine policies are still in place for those who have been exposed or infected with the coronavirus.

Here’s a short list of some other changes parents and students can expect upon their return to schools this year.

Shortage of teachers getting worse Even before the pandemic swept through South Carolina schools, the teacher shortage was an understood challenge that ultimately led to a number of hurdles for students and parents. And last year, South Carolina lost about 170 teachers each month from November 2020 to February 2021, according to research from the Center for Educator Retention and Recruitment, published March 2021.

Dozens of Lowcountry teachers had already left the classroom, resigning in the first few months of the 2020-21 school year.

“We know a lot of teachers left last year,” said Charleston Teacher Alliance (CTA) director Jody Stallings. “We’re already seeing some problems from that, and one thing I think we’ll see are much bigger class sizes. The teacher shortage has always been with us, and this year is no different.”

District, said while there are a lot of new hires coming on board, many of them are administrative coming from teacher ranks. This leaves many classrooms empty, and some class sizes inching over 30 students.

“There’s going to be even less opportunities for social distancing,” Stallings said. “That’s something we can do though — use federal money to do everything we can to get teachers into classrooms so we can spread these kids out a bit more.”

And with Plexiglas barriers coming down in classrooms and mask manStallings dates in question for the time being, the lack of distance between desks could be a bigger issue than people anticipate.

Virtual learning no longer an option for many

If mask mandate disputes and social distancing in schools drive families to put their children in virtual learning programs, schools risk losing funding they need to pull themselves out of the pandemic.

The state passed a new proviso that states school districts cannot have more than 5% of their student body enrolled in virtual programs or state funding will be reduced, according to district spokesperson Andy Pruitt.

CCSD contracted with Low Country Virtual, a consortium of other districts in the state, to run a virtual program for K-8 students, and currently, more than 400 students are enrolled.

But that is the only option offered for this group in hopes of keeping CCSD within an acceptable range to the state.

“Other than through the regional consortium, CCSD will not offer virtual remote instruction this year as an option for K-8 students,” Pruitt told the City Paper. “High school students can access virtual options through their school enrollment process.”

Achievement gap getting wider The pandemic required many students to learn remotely, but what multiple national and statewide studies showed, and what teachers saw in their own classrooms, was those who learned from home fell behind students who didn’t.

But others say the gap already existed, and the pandemic only served to bring it to light.

“While some folks understand we have had some gaps and some holes academically due to COVID, I would be hard-pressed not to point out these gaps have been there for quite a long time and not fully addressed at the state level,” said Mev McIntosh, a longtime North Charleston teacher who will be in a Berkeley County classroom this year. “If we’re going to talk about learning loss, we need to address the continued learning loss our children have been

enduring for nearly 20 years. And in most cases, it’s children of poverty and of color.”

Fortunately, the federal government is providing a significant amount of money to address learning loss that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

CCSD is in the process of working on a plan to submit to the state for approval that details the use of the majority of the $163 million allotted for the McIntosh district to address learning loss.

And the district completed its Summer Enrichment Camps, a summer program for K-8 students to catch up over the break.

State education reform still on the back burner Before the pandemic, teachers and education advocacy groups like SC For Ed had multiple marches planned to demand reform in and out of the classroom. But reform took a backseat to safety precautions during 2020.

While many were hoping this year would bring more opportunities for education reform as schools moved on from pandemic protocols, the delta variant is ensuring that reform remains the No. 2 priority.

“Certainly a lot of things need to go forward, but it will be difficult to do that because teachers were at the limit last year,” Stallings said. “The anticipation was, coming back, it was going to be a lot better, but

it really doesn’t feel that way.

“Our kids aren’t vaccinated. They seem to be getting COVID even more this summer with the variants,” he said. “For the first half of this year at least, everything else is going to take second stage to safety and academic acceleration.”

But even without large-scale reform, the pandemic highlighted the need for a greater focus on mental health in schools.

“We are also seeing, as educators, a serious uptick in mental health care prioritization and needs,” McIntosh said. “And this isn’t just in our students, but the parents and family members as well.”

The new school year will also likely revive efforts to rethink how struggling neighborhood schools are run while also retaining accountability and classroom standards for students in need of a boost.

This year, Charleston County School District trustees took advantage of a new state law that allows designated “schools of innovation” to apply to have some state standards waived in hopes that the increased flexibility will boost student outcomes.

Until now, such waivers were limited to charter schools. The district’s first school of innovation, North Charleston High School, has struggled for years as a high-poverty

neighborhood school.

District leaders are optimistic the new approach can help the school change course while retaining control.

“One thing I really like about it is that it says that you can’t just apply for waivers and then come up with a plan. You have to have a plan to accompany your waiver requests,” Trustee Kristen French, a North Charleston resident, told WCIV-TV this month.

Still, public school supporters warn the measure could lead to even more outside involvement.

“We don’t want it to open the door for thirdparty private school operators coming in and taking over our neighborhood schools,” advocate leader Sarah Johnson told WCIV-TV. That’s a reality Johnson and school district leaders may still have to reckon with, after years of fine-tuning a fledgling “acceleration” proposal for struggling schools that would use outside partners to stimulate growth.

Flowertown Players blossoms anew with summer series

The doors are open, and the curtain is rising at Summerville’s community theater. After almost 18 months, Flowertown Players is finally back to producing shows this month with its first End of Summer Series, a collection of four plays each getting a one-week run at the James F. Dean Community Theater.

The brainchild of Flowertown’s board of directors, the End of Summer Series was conceived as a way of getting Flowertown’s loyal audiences back into their seats.

“I think it’s just like any other arts organization,” said Flowertown’s Monica Shows.

“You’re wondering, ‘will you survive?’ and if you do survive, ‘will the people come back?’”

Each show will run for four performances, Thursday through Sunday. Love Letters opened the series Aug. 12. Hate Mail follows Aug. 19 with Take My Wife, Please behind it Aug. 26. In Search of …

Sasquatch was supposed to open the series on Aug. 5, but an emergency facilitated the sudden shift in the schedule. It will now close out the series after it opens Sept. 2.

Debuting in 1988, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

It tells the story of Melissa and Andrew, two affluent childhood friends who share a lifelong relationship. The play is told entirely through the two actors reading their letters back and forth, spanning their entire collective story from birthday cards to bereavements.

Hate Mail, by Kira Obolensky and Bill

Corbett, carries many of the calling cards of Love Letters. It’s also a two-hander following a relationship through the years, and it’s also told through the reading of letters.

However, Hate Mail prides itself on being a much wilder and funnier ride than its predecessor. When spoiled rich kid Preston gets artistic soul Dahlia fired from her job because of a complaint letter, it kicks off a love/hate relationship that makes for a roller coaster of emotions.

Take My Wife, Please has twice the cast as the previous two plays. Terry Rouesch’s play focuses on womanizer Stephen and his loyal wife Susan. Stephen, who wants to focus on his girlfriend Debbie, hatches a plan with his recently divorced best friend Thomas to seduce Susan so he can file for divorce. Hilarity, doubtless, ensues.

In Search of … Sasquatch is the most out-there pick of the bunch. Written by Robert Kerr, the comedy concerns Stanley, who is totally obsessed with the mythical Sasquatch. The creature surprisingly shows up and invades Stanley’s life and causes all sorts of mishaps. Stanley becomes stuck between duty and friendship. Incredibly exciting for this production is that Robert Kerr himself will be in town to attend the performance and hold a talkback.

Flowertown’s production is the first full staging of In Search of, a rare world premiere for the local community theater.

The shows were chosen to be fun and enjoyable returns to the theater for audiences. After a year and a half of difficulty, Shows felt people would want plays that

were uplifting and pleasant. The simple setups for all four shows mean that they will share one stage and minimal sets. The decision to do smaller shows with limited runs was made, in part, to potentially facilitate transport of the plays to local retirement communities.

“All indications is [that] people are ready to come back for entertainment,” said Shows, who directed Love Letters. “But at the same time, it’s how do you do it so that everybody’s comfortable.” Flowertown won’t sell every seat in the house and encourages those who feel comfortable being masked to do so while in the audience.

“Everybody was very excited. That was the best audition turnout I had seen in a long time,” said Shows of the general feeling of elation around the productions themselves. The lack of theater during the pandemic has affected not just audiences, but actors, tech crews and volunteers who are used to spending their time under the lights. As live performance returns to all corners of Charleston, the Summerville faithful are returning in droves.

“Not only did I have people coming to want to audition for the four shows, but people who were like, ‘Hey, I’ve ushered in the past, how can I reconnect?’ ‘Hey, I do tech, that’s all I wanna do, what kind of technical help do you need?’ Sometimes you’re begging for those people, and they were coming out to an audition just to let us know they were interested. I think this little miniseries is gonna be a big hit with a lot of people.”

Marcus Amaker releases children’s book Charleston’s first Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker has released a new children’s book. Black Music Is, recommended for ages 8-12, follows Bebop the cat on a journey through the history of African-American music.

Each new illustration takes Bebop and the reader into a new era.

The book is illustrated by celebrated Charleston artist Nathan Durfee.

Amaker is giving the book free to 150 local schools and will be holding signings around town starting 1 p.m., Aug. 22, at Buxton Books downtown. There are also signings Aug. 28 at Itinerant Literate in Park Circle and Aug. 29 at Sightsee downtown. —Eric Johnson

Contender sells drinks, snacks and light food offerings, so you could spend the entire day there between games. There are also party packages available, allowing you to rent out Contender for parties. These party packages include food, drinks, gaming time and decorations.

Contender hosted a soft opening in July before officially opening Friday. Since opening its doors, the team has welcomed players of all age. Veteran hardcore gamers walk the floor, as do teenagers looking for a cool place to hang out. Contender is open to gamers as young as 6 (with parent accompaniment), but gamers 12 and up can come in and spend the day as they’d like. The staff are also great at introducing gamers who are into the same kinds of games, fostering community and friendship. Connecting people of different backgrounds is one of the best things about the video game community, and it’s nice to see it put into practice offline.

By Parker Milner Brian Kessler started working in pizza shops when he was 14, and after an eightyear hiatus from the business, he’s bringing a fresh take on Northern-inspired pies to Mount Pleasant with an offering that’s making folks from New Jersey to New Haven feel right at home when they dine at Iggy’s.

“It’s funny because most places will say ‘New York-style pizza’ or ‘Detroit-style pizza’ or whatever it is,” Kessler said. “I’ve had people from Jersey, from Pittsburgh, from the Bronx, from Brooklyn, from New Haven, and they’re like, ‘This is just like home,’ and that’s awesome.”

Kessler and his wife Erinn moved to Charleston in 2013 with plans to open a restaurant. Kessler had the know-how after running two successful pizzerias in the suburbs north of Atlanta, opening the first when he was just 23. But an overheated Charleston market with sky-high rent rates caused the couple to hit the pause button.

“We ended up selling both of the spots in Atlanta and just sitting tight until this past year,” said Kessler, who spent the time outside of the industry working in construction management and flipping houses with Erinn. “We found space available that was exactly what we were looking for.”

The 1220 Ben Sawyer Blvd. space was previously home to Baroni’s New York Pizza,

making the transition relatively seamless ahead of Iggy’s July opening, Kessler said.

You’ll find chicken wings, hoagies, baked pastas and more at Iggy’s, but pizza is the star of the medium-sized menu, featuring a mix of classic and creative topping combinations. As for the dough, it’s a mashup of the thin-crust New Jersey, soft New York and chewy, slightly charred New Haven styles.

“I just say it’s Northeastern style. I’ve basically been doing it my whole life,” Kessler said. “I pull inspiration for my dough from New Haven as well as New York. I hate to classify it, [but] most people would liken it to New York style.”

Topping combinations run the gamut.

The “Proof of Pie” is a simple margheritastyle pizza made with fresh mozzarella, basil and pecorino cheese, while the pineapple, ricotta, jalapeno and pepperoni-topped “Say Aloha to My Little Friend” offers a creative take on the classic Hawaiian pizza. Kessler will continue to introduce specialty pizzas to go with the daily menu, he said.

“We kind of run between both traditional toppings and some slightly off-the-cuff stuff,” said Kessler, describing his favorite pizza, “The Notorious F.I.G.,” which combines a goat and ricotta cheese base with fig preserves, soppressata, olives and fresh mozzarella. “That’s definitely one of our favorites and definitely one of our best sellers.”

After years away from his home away

The Coney Combo: soppressata, ham, capicola, provolone and Greek dressing from home, Kessler is back to doing what he knows best in a place he loves. The industry veteran hopes to create that nostalgic feeling of grabbing a slice at a local pizza parlor for Charleston transplants who miss the pies they grew up eating.

“It’s been interesting by not labeling it how many people have been able to liken it to just like home for them.”

The Longboard now open on Sullivan’s Island The Longboard Restaurant + Bar is now open at 2213-B Middle St. on Sullivan’s Island, bringing the second outpost of the U.S. Virgin Islandsbased eatery to Charleston. Longboard executive chef Will Fincher, who traveled to the original Longboard and its sister property, The Easterly, this past year to prepare for the opening, serves a light, seafoodcentric menu.

Stems executive chef Julian Lippe will helm the Three Sirens kitchen at 1067 East Montague Ave., a space previously occupied by YoBo Cantina Fresca, steps from the popular natural wine-focused bar.

Three Sirens will offer lunch, brunch and dinner. Lippe, who has expanded Stems & Skins small-plate style menu since taking over as executive chef, will lead both kitchens, focusing on more traditional appetizers and entrees at Three Sirens. Wines will be “all coastal Mediterranean,” and there will be cocktails on tap, Tunstall said.

Elderberries had a resurgence in the last year and a half, as folks focused on health during the pandemic, turning to anything from essential oils to vitamin D pills. And while some of these pandemic purchases have made their way out of homes, elderberry products have stuck around in Charleston, where two local companies are spreading the word about the dark purple berry and its benefits.

“Last March of 2020, we actually completely sold out so quickly that we were scrambling to get more ingredients,” said Sara Gail, owner of elderberry company RD Naturals. “The demand has definitely Gail increased and awareness has increased over the past year.”

Gail, a registered dietitian, launched her company after years of growing elderberries in her Daniel Island backyard. In the five years since opening, the company has grown to the point where Gail is willing to drive a van filled with her three core products — elderberry syrup, tinctures and gummies — cross-country to keep the momentum going.

“I personally am driving my elderberry van, and I will just kind of hustle and try to introduce my products to as many stores as I can,” Gail told the City Paper over the

phone from Idaho, her latest stop. “I’m working four farmers markets per week out here, and I’ve gotten into six stores. There’s customer demand for it, and people have numerous reports of it helping them.”

“Elderberries are really well researched.

Elderberry compounds actually have been shown to create a barrier between our healthy cells and viruses,” Gail added.

At least two studies have shown that elderberry extract can shorten the duration of the flu by four days, and while another study’s results found this wasn’t the case, the dark purple berry has proven itself a worthwhile supplement for many who claim it helps reduce inflammation, fatigue and even toothache pain. While there isn’t any evidence that elderberries can combat COVID-19, a trial is underway in London to see if black elderberry liquid could be used as a potential treatment for the virus.

Raw food chef and vegan nutrition specialist Tasha Robinson — who goes by “Chef TR” — is a firm believer in the ability of plantbased food, herbs and all-natural supplements to help maintain health and wellness.

Robinson started using Robinson elderberries nearly 10 years ago after giving birth to twins, she told the City Paper.

“I had friends that were herbalists, and

I started using [elderberries] myself,” she said. “We noticed a big difference, especially around cold and flu season.”

Elderflowers and elderberries were widely used by herbalists in America starting in the 1600s, when European settlers brought the European Elder across the Atlantic, although Native Americans were using other species of the plant well before that. For enslaved Africans, “Herbalism was a daily practice of empowerment and healing for men and women alike because there were very few other options for healing,” according to the Herbal Academy.

“I study a lot of African history — back in Egypt, they used certain herbs for childbirth. The use of medicinal herbs has been in African American history dating back to slavery,” Robinson said. “We didn’t have doctors, so we knew how to heal using different herbs.”

Robinson’s company, TR Creations, sells a do-it-yourself elderberry syrup kit that yields about 32 ounces of syrup. In addition to black elderberries, the syrup blend contains other herbs and spices, like cloves, wild cherry bark, star anise and goji berries.

TR Creations’ website bills the berries as having the ability to boost the immune system, reduce cold and flu symptoms, fight viral infections and ease allergy symptoms.

But today, herbal medicines and apothecaries shouldn’t fully replace traditional medicine, Robinson said.

Sister duo Rising Appalachia is poised to release a new album, The Lost Mystique of Being In the Know

Backward and forward with Rising Appalachia’s Chloe Smith

By Kevin Wilson Rising Appalachia is an eclectic regional ensemble featuring banjo-playing sisters Leah and Chloe Smith. The duo’s path to international acclaim was dusted with subtle evolutions as both learned to derive global and local partnerships from lasting bonds.

“The group arose out of a combination of what our family passed to us musically and culturally, our rootedness in community, our burning impulse to self-expression and the bridge between sibling’s brains,” Chloe Smith told City Paper.

The sisters’ influences ranged from the writing of Leonard Cohen, Ani DiFranco and Sufi poet Rumi to the singing of Hozier, Martin Hayes and The Wailin’ Jennys.

Once they recognized their shared gift for musical expression, the two got to work on expanding their skills and artistic reach.

“Leah and I busked for many, many years 9-to-5 in the French Quarter of New Orleans as well as on the streets of Europe,” Chloe said. “We took it rather seriously and made schedules for ourselves, scoped out the best spots, tried out new songs and generally watched passersby’s interactions with our music. From there, we slowly made some connections and began getting asked to perform at various small concert rooms, farmers markets, family engagements, and protests and rallies.”

It was a slow and bulky transition to get to where we are now,” she said, stressing that Rising Appalachia was no overnight success story. This is in part because the

band, which is now a six-piece outfit with the Smith sisters at the helm, has been repeatedly recognized for its efforts to call attention to important issues while entertaining large crowds at the same time.

As prominent female bandleaders in a male-dominated field, just doing what comes naturally has caused them to become agents of change, particularly in the American South from which they came.

“Music can be a great equalizer … bringing folks together across the boundaries of country, language, ideals, religions, rage, gender, politics and everything else that can separate us,” she said.

The high-quality songwriting within the Rising Appalachia team has been a consistent component of the group’s output since the beginning. Chloe offered a few insights into its unconventional creative process.

“Some [of the songs] we ‘catch’ from the ethers. Some we craft from the bottom up, like clay pots. Some are collaborative throwdowns from all six band members in a jam session. Some are a nugget of a personal story whispered into the hole of the guitar.”

It’s that constant cultivation of new tunes that Chloe finds most exhilarating about her profession. “That is what is fun about being an artist — you learn to allow each piece to be what it wants to be … lending your efforts but also somehow getting out of the way. It’s a delicate dance. A beautiful tango. We make art to respond to the times, to reflect our inner and outer world, to be an extension of our souls and spirits.”

That fully engaged approach to living life

and making music has recently culminated in the lovely new LP, The Lost Mystique of Being In The Know. The underlying theme of the entire album, according to Chloe, is related to the modern trend of trading knowledge that is deep and well-trained. “This is not all encompassing,” she said. “But the mystique of knowledge is that anyone who is a true master would never call themselves that, and most of our brightest minds don’t engage in the promotion of themselves.

Thus, it’s a lost mystique. The subtle. The humble. The refinement. The pace of good work, going slow.”

Rising Appalachia is now addressing a world-wide audience through its distinctive home-grown platform. Still, this endeavor is very much a family affair. “Leah and I are blood sisters, life partners and creative cohorts. That is an incredible thing, something we try not to take for granted,” Chloe said. “It makes the road less lonely as well as keeps the ego humbled in a profession that serves the ego first. We balance and shift our weight between one another, and that keeps Rising Appalachia a growing, everevolving, family-led project.”

The Smith sisters aren’t on a search for a destination — but rather on “a following of a golden thread along life’s many routes.”

Pulse Gracie Thrice sings all over town Musician Gracie Thrice has been performing at Uncorked Charleston about twice a month for the past two years.

You can stream her Fleetwood Mac cover “Dreams,” thanks to the local variety show, The Grilled Cheese Show, and in about a month, she will have five originals released.

“I write about childhood and growth and maturing as an adult. Things I feel like most people don’t write about,” she said.

As she’s played the songwriter’s soap box at Chico Feo, her selfconfidence has bloomed. Besides recording and releasing her work independently, Thrice has a full gig schedule ahead of her.

See Tom Mackell at The Royal American Local singer-songwriter Tom Mackell will be on The Royal American stage Friday to celebrate the release of Hearts Wide Open, his eclectic fivesong EP produced out of Nashville.

He traces his sound from Americiana to alt-country to folk rock. “It’s a blend of those with a little bit of pop, especially with this new EP,” Mackell said.

“I like to write music that you can be attracted to at face value the first time.

And I like to write music where you can pull off the layers and find more meaning if you want to.”

Noah Jones unlocks music career on keys As a kid, keyboardist Noah Jones grew up visiting his grandmother in rural North Carolina where there was no Wi-Fi or TV, only an old, out-of-tune upright piano. “I ended up writing little tunes in my head and playing them however badly,” Jones said, and later, he would experiment with a cheap little Radio Shack keyboard from his parents’ attic.

With a bare minimum in classical training and music reading, he kept writing and improvising on the piano throughout middle school. Playing in church also helped him solidify his understanding of the feelings and emotions behind music.

“The term everyone used was ‘play by ear?’

And I never looked at it like that — I just always considered it as, ‘I can play,’ ” he said.

Jazz piano started taking over the frame of his musical thinking in high school, and he began writing original material with his friends in an instrumental fusion group, Man Child. He gigged with the group as he studied piano at College of Charleston, which landed him a spot in local alternative soul band Little Bird in 2018 after a chance encounter at the Music Farm led to a show at The Commodore.

Little Bird exposed him to a more complete picture of Charleston’s music scene. “They showed me what putting on a true show was like — playing music that you love to play, that you write and are passionate about, for people who want to be there and receive it.” These days, Jones and guitarist/vocalist Jay Hurtt drive the songwriting direction of the band in what they call “cook up sessions.”

Noah Jones is a driving force behind alt-soul group Psycodelics, with an album on the way this fall currently, Psycodelics, a group spearheaded by bassist Cameron Westcott. Along with drummer Sean Bing and guitarist Whitt Burn, the group is ready to put out an album by the end of the year.

His complicated experience with consistently booking local venues in the past few years was given context by the social unrest during the George Floyd protests. “The whole period opened my eyes to how things are and how much we need to put an effort into bringing Black artists and underappreciated music as a whole to the forefront.

Everyone, I don’t care who it is, draws something from Black music and Black history and Black pain.”

He believes that Charleston’s diversity within its local music industry could be utilized similarly to how Detroit’s Motown Records was developed. “It just takes a level of humility on everyone to work with each other to build this resource. There’s a lot of power that we have that we aren’t utilizing as artists.” —Chelsea Grinstead
