Barriers to entry for Spanish-speaking business owners and hopefuls prevent many from ever getting started, but Lowcountry Local First (LLF) is working to help eliminate some of those stumbling blocks. LLF’s Community Business Academy, a part of the organization’s Good Enterprises Initiative, graduated its first Spanish Business Academy class earlier this year and is getting ready for its next instruction period this fall. “For the Latinx community, this is way past due,” said program director Raquel Padgett. “There’s a lot of inequity here, and we want to remedy that and make sure that the Latinx business community knows they are absolutely more than welcome here with LLF and Good Enterprises and that we will support their businesses to the fullest, just like we do with any other business.” Good Enterprises launched in 2019, but after the first few instruction periods, organizers saw many of the students were

learning a new language alongside new business practices. Two of these students, Diana Saillant and Nilsy Rapalo, got involved soon after graduation. “It was a great opportunity because we have a lot of great people doing business in the area without any real training; they’re just good at what they do,” Rapalo told the City Paper. “But now we have this great opportunity for them to learn everything in Spanish. “In the beginning, you’re trying to learn all this new material — which is a challenge in itself — and learning it in a different language only creates more barriers,” she said. “It’s about closing that gap, providing accommodations and creating access to education.” The team held its first bilingual graduation May 25, with slides in Spanish and English translations when necessary. “It really helped me understand what it feels like to sit on the other side of the English language,” Padgett said. “It was such a beautiful ceremony.”

A cyclist traveling over the Ashley River late July 16 was killed after being hit by a vehicle traveling toward downtown Charleston. The incident occurred at about 11:50 p.m. July 16, when a Honda Accord driving on the northbound Ashley River Bridge struck an adult cyclist traveling in the lane of traffic. The cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police. Charleston Police Department said in a press release that no charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing. The incident is the 10th fatal traffic collision this year, police said. Two Ashley River Bridges carry traffic on separate north and southbound spans along Highway 17. The outbound bridge has a small sidewalk, but the inbound bridge, where the fatal incident occurred, does not. —Sam Spence

Gullah Geechee corridor names new leader The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor has a new leader for its territory that stretches along the coast from the Carolinas into Florida. Victoria Smalls was selected as the group’s new executive director earlier this month, according to a press release. A member of the Gullah Geechee community and native of St. Helena, Smalls Smalls’ resume includes years of experience working as a director of history, art and culture at the Penn Center in St. Helena, director of the York W. Bailey Museum and commissioner with the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission. Commission chair Dionne HoskinsBrown, who lives in Savannah, is stepping down as acting director as Smalls moves into the role. “I am absolutely ecstatic that we are able to place someone as capable as Ms. Smalls at the helm of our organization,” she said in the press release. “She is eminently qualified, uniquely prepared and profoundly representative of the community.” Created by Congress in 2006, the corridor works to protect Gullah Geechee cultural regions, natural areas and historic sites throughout the Southeast. Smalls has also served with other organizations and commissioned boards with goals that overlap with the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor’s, including the International African American Museum, the Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies at Coastal Carolina University and the National Park Service as a park ranger at the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park in Beaufort. —Samantha Connors

‘Time to end the prohibition on marijuana’ SC gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham announces plan for legalization Former U.S. Rep. and current Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham announced his plan to legalize marijuana at the state level, both medically and recreationally last week, should he win the governor’s race next year. “It’s time for elected officials to admit that what we are doing has not been working,” he told a small group of reporters and campaign supporters at a press conference July 12. “Although there are career politicians who would rather live in the past.” Cunningham said marijuana legalization is now a matter of catching up to other states. Marijuana is fully legal in 18 states, including Virginia. And 37 states, including Alabama and Mississippi, have legalized or voted in favor of medicinal marijuana. The former congressman was joined by Jason Eargle, a S.C. native whose father used cannabis to ease symptoms of stage 4 cancer; Donald Howell, a veteran and nurse; and Bill Nettles, the former U.S. attorney for South Carolina. Cunningham leaned heavily on the benefits of medical marijuana use for those with chronic illness, specifically veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, in his advocacy for cannabis. But he also said tax revenue from marijuana sales could

bolster the state’s ability to fund infrastructure and education. “We owe this to our men and women who have served our country; we owe it to those who suffer through chronic illnesses who just want relief from their pain,” he said. “We owe it to communities of color who have been unfairly impacted by these archaic laws.” The plan calls for the complete expungement of criminal records for those who were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana in South Carolina. However, marijuana legislation often raises red flags for law enforcement, who have been fighting the war on drugs for decades now. “But let’s be clear,” Nettles said. “Their title is law enforcement, not the whole promulgation. What we ought to be doing is asking law enforcement to get in their lane.” Cunningham said he is confident in his ability to work with conservative lawmakers in the statehouse to bring his plan into fruition, citing his two bills passed through a divided Congress and by a Republican president during his term in Washington D.C. And, he said, he has the numbers behind him. “The people are no longer divided on this issue, it’s the politicians that haven’t come around,” he said. —Skyler Baldwin

Charleston weighing updated parks plan

Charleston leaders have been working to update a master plan that will inform the future of parks and recreation in the city through a combination of public input, expert opinion and examples from other towns and cities across the nation. The findings of the plan were presented to the parks and recreation committee July 13, and the One Charleston Parks and Recreation Master Plan was reviewed by

City Council last Tuesday. Generally, public response through various surveys issued from the Department of Parks and Recreation (PRD) were positive, but expert opinion shows that the city needs to do some rethinking about where their profits come from to be able to sustain the level of recreation offerings currently in place. “We feel like there should be a position

called ‘enterprise manager’ that actively seeks out things to be done in your community that are going to bring revenue to this community,” said former PRD executive director Tom O’Rourke. “Right now, you have a very efficient system … but it’s certainly not lucrative when it comes to cost that is actually charged.” The full plan can be read at charlestoncityplan.com. —Skyler Baldwin

A West Ashley woman’s ex-boyfriend kicked a dent in her front door during an argument. She told police that this isn’t the first time he’s attempted this, and the last time, he broke his foot. She said it was likely that he had been working out, which police noted was likely not relevant to the actual crime. RUNNERS UP While pouring out an intoxicated woman’s alcohol, she yelled at police, “I paid good money for that.” Police noted that it was “about a $6 bottle of wine from a nearby store.” I mean, $6 is $6. Police told the driver of a gray Dodge Charger to step outside, to which the man replied, “Why don’t you step outside, so I can beat your ass?” A downtown man claimed two men came to his house and stole his car, leaving cash behind. do that is wonderful.” Jordan Amaker said she’s seen the need the need for this type of program during her time as LLF’s communications director. “We continue to advocate for every local municipality in our region to at least offer their business license and other paperwork in Spanish — if not have someone on the staff who is bilingual,” she said. “It’s astonishing how few do. Most of our local banks don’t have many resources available in Spanish either.” According to Grace, that leads many to going about starting their business the wrong way. “They aren’t getting their business licenses or tax IDs, and a little bit of that is probably that they don’t know how,” he said. “I see reports all the time about how contractors aren’t even registered properly, so there has to be something out there that shows people the right way to do things.” That’s where La Academia comes in. “We’ve learned a lot over the last year in terms of the progress needed to make starting and growing a successful local business here possible for all people,” Amaker said. And, Padgett explained, it’s not that they offer special or more resources to Spanish speakers — they merely give them equal access to the same resources everyone else has. “La Academia is the exact same program as the Community Business Academy, just in the Spanish language,” she said. The curriculum used in the academy is used throughout the country and was even endorsed by former President Barack Obama. Participants take a 12-week course first which breaks down everything from understanding finances and cash flow to break-even points. “We teach you everything you need to know to start a business or enhance your existing business,” Padgett said. “It really doesn’t matter where you are in that process, there’s always more you can do and learn.” It’s designed so that by the time students complete the first 12 classes, held once a week, the majority of their business plans are in place if they didn’t have one already. “What this provides for our participants is intellectual, social and financial capital,” Padgett said. “Those are the three pillars that we stand on — that any business stands on — to be successful.” And it’s not just the lessons that are taken away. “I’m not just a trainer from New Jersey that you don’t know or connect with,” Rapalo said. “I am a part of this community, saying ‘I did it, I took the class, and you can do it too.’ It creates that sense of community, whether the classes are online or in-person, and that’s essential for any business because it’s the foundation for networking.”

Don’t leave children, pets in cars in this heat T

he heat is back. Partnered with Charleston’s cloying humidity, look for temperatures to feel like they’re in triple digits for the next unmerciful month. This year, let’s deal with our annual unpleasantness safely by not letting people or pets wait inside parked cars — even for a minute. If you park a car in the sun when it’s 90 degrees outside — a typical midday temperature this time of year — it takes just 10 minutes for a car’s internal temperature to reach 109 degrees. After 20 minutes, the inside of the car can be 119 degrees. Those are deadly temperatures. And cracked windows don’t help anyone inside. The hot sun, beating down on the roof of a car, still causes temperatures to soar inside parked vehicles. How deadly? People can suffer heat stroke when their core body temperature reaches 104 degrees or higher. It’s potentially lethal for a person or pet to be in a closed car for any length of time on South Carolina’s hot, humid days. Hats off to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for drawing attention to the deadly issue of hot car deaths. Every year across the country, about one child dies every week from being left in hot cars, either when a driver intentionally leaves a child — “just for a minute” — in a vehicle while doing something else or when a parent or guardian forgets a child in a vehicle. Sometimes, a child locks himself or herself into a car without the driver realizing it, according to DHEC. Just as people suffer in hot cars, so do pets. If you see a child in a hot car, South Carolina’s Good Samaritan law allows you to break a window to get the

Here are some tips for when you exit your car, according to the National Safety Council: • Open the back door every time you park the car to make sure no one is inside. • When driving a child, put something you need in the backseat, such as a handbag, so you’ll get it and the child when you leave the car. • Keep a stuffed animal in a child’s car seat. When traveling with a child, put the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat to remind you of your young passenger. • If you have a change in routine, such as your spouse or parent dropping your child off at child care instead of you, make sure you and the other person communicate to confirm the drop-off was made. • Consider technology that alerts drivers to check the back seat. (Vehicle and child restraint manufacturers have been working on various evolving alert systems and some technologies are available now.)

Getting the vaccine is the right thing to do By Chardale Murray The past 15 months have been difficult for our state, our country and our world. Many people tragically lost their lives, tensions flared and we all had to adapt to a new normal marked by virtual and remote interactions with other people and physical separation from friends, classmates and co-workers. The long-term damage caused by these 15 months physically, financially, mentally and politically remains to be seen as we open back up and return to normal.

You have received conflicting and sometimes contradictory information from the news, the things you see on Facebook, and the stuff you hear from elected leaders and public figures. It is confusing. But here are the facts: the vaccine is safe, and it is the key to stopping the spread of COVID-19. I ask that you consider stepping up and taking the vaccine, not just for yourself, but for your community. It is the right thing to do.

omen and girls ages 4 to 70 descend on Folly Beach’s Washout for two days every year to shred the legendary surf spot during the Wahine Classic, an all-female surf competition now in its 20th year. Surf competitions are nothing unusual in a beach town like Folly, but this particular competition is unique in that it was specifically created for women. “It started out as a smaller contest for girls to get an opportunity to come together,” said Nicole Elko, the event’s director. “The mission and intent has really stayed the same over the last 20 years. It’s a time for us to get together in what is traditionally a pretty male-dominated sport to just have the Washout to ourselves and enjoy some sisterhood time together.” The Wahine Classic is the first and only all-female surf competition in the state — in fact, it’s one of the few competitions of its kind in all of the Southeast. The event was originally created by founders Katie Coryell and Kelly Kane Wood to provide a space for female surfers of all ages to come together and enjoy the waves. The competition has grown over the years with more than 100 surfers expected to participate in this year’s

event taking place July 31-Aug. 1. The event is broken into pro, novice and amateur divisions, for longboard and shortboard competitions, with the amateur division split into five age groups. The amateur division makes up a bulk of the competition, but other fun categories are included as well like the bodyboard and tandem divisions. Two tables of judges sit facing a sea of women and girls in colorful rash guards doled out to the competitors to keep them straight. “Orange is up!” a judge yells out during one of the many 15-minute heats. They’ll be on-site selling water in twist-top aluminum bottles, similar to beach-friendly bottles sold by domestic beer companies. Aluminum is much easier to recycle than plastic, and all of the cans are made from 73% recycled aluminum, creating a more sustainable way to sell single-use water bottles without the plastic. “This is the first year that we’re really pushing the zero-waste thing ... environmental awareness is so important right now,” said Carey Dankers, a Folly Beach real estate agent for Sweetgrass Real Estate, avid surfer of more than 24 years and another member of the Wahine Classic organizing committee. “Surfing is such a euphoric sport, but it’s a mental thing as well, being in touch with the ocean, the dolphins, the waves. You’re connected with the water. It’s very meditative.” This attitude about the connection between the ocean and the surfers is a common feeling, which is perhaps part of the reason participants place a greater emphasis on environmental issues and keeping the beach clean for humans and marine life. Between the vibes, the waves, the sense of community and of course, the swag bags full of fun freebies, the Wahine Classic is a special kind of gathering, giving female surfers of all ages space to shred and share time together. And events like this have, in part, helped shift the narrative around surfing to be more inclusive. “When I started surfing 24 years ago, it was predominantly male. I think there were maybe five of us out on Folly who were female surfers,” Dankers said. “Now, I see just as many women as men. And young girls are rippin’!” Hutson agrees. “It’s really cool to see more and more women in the water just from day-to-day surfing. I love that. I love seeing younger kids in general but girls also,” she said. “So, there’s definitely a shift. I think that came along with surfing as a whole showing more pro women and allowing more of the feminine side to come out.”

On the same shore as the older, more experienced surfers, you’ll see girls of all ages getting in on the action — there’s even a push and surf competition for the little 4-year-olds. Usually attracting 400 to 450 people, the event welcomes spectators to the Washout between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on competition days. Although the participants love the opportunity to surf and compete, the event boils down to something more than that: sisterhood. “The vibes from all the women on the beach together is one of my favorites,” said Perng Hutson, a pro surfer, regular Wahine competitor and assistant manager of McKevlin’s Surf Shop on Folly Beach. “The whole community just comes together. It’s a weekend for all the women to celebrate, support and cheer each other on. It’s an incredible experience.” Hutson, who has been surfing for more than 15 years, is also on the Wahine Classic organizing committee, helping secure donations and make the event happen. Comradery and support are definitely the themes of the event. According to Hutson, being surrounded by other female surfers helps young girls feel more comfortable with the sport and enjoy the fun of being in the water rather than focusing too much on an aggressive, competitive edge. Elko echoes those sentiments. “For me, it’s about empowering the next generation of females. Period. Yes, of course female surfers, but it’s those young girls out there seeing their moms and the older girls they look up to so much just crushing it and being rockstars. That’s what they need to have in their minds — that they can do anything.” Elko’s own daughters, Ainsley (age 11) and Charlotte (age 10), participate in the event every year and even give her the inside scoop on what to use for trophies and tips on items young girls would like to find in competitor swag bags. “Sometimes I’ll ask them, ‘Wouldn’t this be cool for the trophies?’ and they’ll tell me, ‘No, mom that would not be cool, we need this instead,’” said Elko, laughing. “So, they help me a lot.” The entire Folly Beach community seems to pitch in, from event sponsors like McKevlin’s and the City of Folly Beach to restaurants in the area that donate gift cards, T-shirts and other items for participants. But perhaps one of the most important sponsors is the Charleston chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, which helps the Wahine Classic to be a zero-waste event by providing compostable dish and silverware, setting up compost stations and educating people on environmental issues. After the event ends on Sunday, participants and spectators stick around for a beach sweep to ensure that no trace of trash is left behind. And this year, the organization secured a water sponsorship from Aquaman actor

For Colorado-based banjo player Andy Thorn, things will come full circle this week. Thorn grew up in North Carolina, making trips down to catch concerts at The Windjammer, including some stellar sets from iconic Americana act Leftover Salmon. The only difference is that when its members hit the stage there this week, Thorn will be among their lineup instead of standing in the crowd. This feel-good story has been in the making for quite some time. It actually began for Thorn around the age of 12. “I was drawn to a neighbor’s yard sale one day, and while I was there I impulsively purchased my first banjo,” Thorn recalled. “That was my starting point, I guess, and it’s safe to say that I haven’t really wanted to put the instrument down since then.” He did, however, manage to pick up a degree in jazz guitar, of all things, while attending the University of North Carolina. “They didn’t offer one in banjo,” he said. Still, this academic endeavor taught him a lot about artistic improvisation. Plus, outside of the classroom, Thorn said that he continued his education in Appalachian musical themes as a part of the Chapel Hill group known as the Big Fat Gap. After graduating from UNC, Thorn headed west to hook up with the Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band, a short-lived acoustic outfit in which he further cultivated his fast and furious picking style alongside such like minded musicians as Anders Beck, now with Greensky Bluegrass, and Travis Book, founding member of Infamous Stringdusters.

From there, Thorn was briefly drafted by some other notably eclectic ensembles like Larry Keel’s Natural Bridge and the Emmitt-Nershi Band. It was, in fact, the latter gig that led to Thorn getting an invitation from Drew Emmitt to come over and join him full-time in his other project, Leftover Salmon, and to put down roots in the Boulder area. When Thorn was welcomed into the fold 10-or-so years ago, Leftover Salmon already had a long history and carefully curated reputation within the jam band scene. Famous collaborations that bandleader Vince Herman had set up with the likes of Taj Mahal, Sam Bush and Waylon Jennings had already taken place. That said, this new chapter was to be an important one in the Leftover Salmon odyssey, as evidenced by the latest string of groundbreaking studio albums that were all leading up to this year’s soon-to-be classic LP, Brand New Good Old Days. As fantastic as the energy is on any given recording, Thorn insists Leftover Salmon does its best work in front of a live audience. Interestingly, although the group has always exuded joyful noise wherever they are, these days, it feels like the Leftover Salmon crew is working from a deeper, richer, more flavorful palate than ever before. ourselves too seriously. Honestly, I think we’ve achieved the perfect blend of fun and professionalism,” he said. There are elements of bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz, cajun, country, rock and funk splattered throughout a typical Leftover Salmon performance and all of the pieces that each of the individual members are responsible for fit together tightly. “They used to jokingly refer to our sound as ‘polyethnic-cajun-fusion-slamgrass’, but there’s really never been a good label for what we do,” Thorn said. “The fact that we have a song list that now encompasses 400 tunes also keeps folks guessing night after night, ourselves included.” According to Thorn at least, you never know what you are going to get with Leftover Salmon, other than a mindblowing show.
