Sainsbury-Plaice COUNTRY ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Llangernyw Yew 2022
“Over the past 25 years I have been fortunate enough to carve a career photographing the subjects I love. Working for great magazines such as Country Life, The Field and Horse and Hound, photographing almost every aspect of British rurality. My passion for our environment has been kindled by my two decades of estate photography work wtth the Duchy of Cornwall.
In 2021 I was honoured to be asked to be one of the two photographers tasked with capturing the 70 ancient trees and 70 ancient woodlands dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for The Queen’s Green Canopy book due to be launched later in 2023.

“Charlie is a talented photographer and I only have praise for the quality of his work, his responsiveness and his discretion. People, the rural scene and the natural world are particular strengths. In our quest to enhance our Natural Capitals his images are invaluable.”
(Alastair Martin FRICS, Secretary and Keeper of the Records for The Duchy of Cornwall)
Camera Systems
The ability to photograph at any time of the day and in any weather condition is important and with the maximum lens and sensor quality to allow for the best results.
I use the Hassleblad X2D combined with 21mm, 45mm and 120mm lenses. This is Hassleblad’s flagship medium format mirrorless camera. Lightweight, easy to use and with superior file sizes from the 100MP CMOS sensor producing unrivalled image detail.
For fast action and wildlife I have the Canon EOS system and Canon L-Series and Zeiss lenses.
Knowledge & Understanding
Prior to becoming a photographer in 1998, I had studied Agriculutrural Sciences at Nottingham University. After graduating I worked as a management trainee for a diverse leisure company with interests in fast food, motoring and golf.
After three years I moved to a photographic studio. Five years later I re-entered the agricultural industry as a regional sales representative for a large plant breeding company, supplying the arable, pastoral and amenity sectors. I had a keen interest in and developed a number of conservation and wild bird cover mixtures which are widely used today.
Travelling as a salesman enabled me to create a library of images which I was soon selling to my customers for brochures and press articles.
Having left to set my own photography business in 1998 in Tetbury I was soon working for The Duchy of Cornwall covering all aspects of the estates and a number of the leading country magazines.
As well as photography, I am also a Director of Tidgrove Estate Ltd in Hampshire where we have undergone three decades of restorative ecology work of which I am now actively involved.
