ImportantConsiderationsforDairyCattleExhibitors
Stateveterinaryandpublichealthofficialshavebeeninvestigatingthedetectionofhighly pathogenicavianinfluenza(HPAI)indairycows.Whileitcauseslesssevereillnessincattle thaninpoultry,thediseaseremainsofconcernforalllivestockandalsoforhumanswho comeintocontactwithinfectedanimals(APHIS,2024).Withtheupcomingexhibitionseason uponus,itisimportantthatallexhibitorsaretakingthenecessaryprecautionstopreventthe spreadofHPAIinourstate.Asadairyexhibitor,itisimportanttofollowproperbiosecurity proceduresbothathomeandatexhibitionstoensureoptimaldiseaseprevention.Beloware someexhibitorrecommendations:1.Familiarizeyourselfwiththesignsofinfluenzaindairy cattle.a.Commonsignsincludedecreasedmilkproduction,reducedappetite,thickened and/ordiscoloredmilk,lethargy,fever,anddehydration.b.Consultyourlocalveterinarianif yoususpectHPAIinyourherd.2.Cleananddisinfectequipmentregularly,especiallybefore andafterbeingusedatanexhibitionevent.3.Refrainfromsharingequipmentwithother exhibitorsoutsideyourhousehold,especiallyatanexhibitionevent.4.Isolateanyanimalthat hasreturnedfromanexhibitionbeforereturningthembacktotherestoftheherdorother animalsontheproperty.a.Consultyourlocalveterinarianforfurtherrecommendationson isolation.Aswemakeourwaythroughthesummermonths,SouthDakota4-Hwillremainin closecontactwithstateveterinariansastheymonitortheprogressionofthediseaseinour area.Whetheryouareattending/participatinginadairycattleexhibitionoryouare preparingforthefairseasonthatistocome,makesuretomonitorthehealthandsafetyof bothyouranimalsandyou.Pleasecontactyourlocalveterinarianorvisit https://www.aphis.usda.gov/ifyouhaveanyquestionsonHPAI.
