Reminders for the State Fair!

The State Fair deadline for 4-H is on August 13th at 11:59 p.m. CST. The Extension Office has State Fair Membership cards printed and ready to go. You can grab them from Jo Cee or Lesley at the Charles Mix County Fair!

Food at the County Fair We will be having food trucks from 9 am to 2 pm on Thursday of the County Fair with a BBQ following at 5 pm.

Friday will just be leftover meat from BBQ, we are asking that each family brings a case of water or whatever drink to have for community purposes.

Set up/Clean for Fair July 30th starting at 7:00 pm at the 4-H Center!

Important Info for Registration for the County Fair Horticulture For anyone that plans on showing in Horticulture and/or Open Class Flowers, please take notes and save the packaging for the County Fair. The variety, name of the plant/flower, should be known to mark on your exhibit sheets. Please read the guidelines in the State Fair Book for additional information.

Food Preservation If food safety is a concern, judges reserve the right not to taste and/or judge a food preservation item.

• Refer to the 2024 State Fair Book for materials, current processing methods, and altitude time tables for preserving fruits and vegetables.

• Include the current Food Preservation Exhibits Entry Form with the altitude classification, the recipe, and the source of the recipe. Click here for that form. For a recipe adaption worksheet click here.

• If you are using a packet (i.e. Mrs. Wages or Ball), staple the empty packet to the Entry Form.

Livestock Integrity pledge If you have not signed a livestock integrity pledge you need to do so before you show your animal at County Fair. We will have these available at set up night.

Important Info for Registration for the County Fair Preparing for Display exhibit judging night Entry cards are ready to be picked up at the office, or they will be at setup night to grab so you can have your display projects all ready for the night of the 6th!

A few blank entry form cards will be included for you to fill out for last minute entries, if you need more, please contact the Extension Office before the County Fair. If you did not pre-register your exhibits, you will be given entry form cards for each exhibit that you will need to fill out on your own.

Display Exhibit Entry, Photography & Videography Forms All exhibits entered at the County Fair will need a Display Exhibit Entry Form.

Photography will need a Photography entry form only.

Photography Exhibit Forms must be attached to the back of the photo in the top left corner with all 4 corners secured.

Videography will need a Videography entry form only.

If any entry requires another entry form, ex: photography, videography, clothing, etc., then the display exhibit form is not required.

Photography foam board will be available at the Extension Office. The cost is $1 for white or black foam board. I will also bring a few pieces to the county fair for those last minute changes.

Clothing Exhibits Bring clothing on hangers and cover with clear dry-cleaning bags. Be sure to place your full name, member ID # and county name (for State Fair) on a piece of masking tape and apply it to the inside of each article of clothing. If you are showing clothing at the County Fair, separate forms are needed for each article of clothing, please see below for those forms.

2024 South Dakota 4-H Legislature Program It's that time of year again to think about running for the South Dakota 4-H Legislature! The SD 4-H Legislature is a state level civic and governmental education program allowing participants an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how our state government operates while strengthening youth voice opportunities for the SD 4-H Program. Through a series of hands- on workshops and a mock legislative session, teen participants have an opportunity to run a campaign, serve as a 4-H Legislator, draft bills, debate bills at the South Dakota Capitol building, and more! Due to the

changed timeline, this year’s participants may also utilize their county fair to campaign. Election results will be announced during the awards ceremony

2024 OWLS The 2024-2025 application for the OWLS cohort is now available! OWLS stands for outdoor, wilderness, and life skills, and that’s exactly what the participants will gain through monthly webinars, quarterly campouts, and a year-end adventure! This year’s cohort learned about macro invertebrates, Leave No Trace, orienteering, winter outdoor survival, campfire cooking, natural resource careers, and more! The application is attached. Applications should be emailed or mailed to Katherine Jaeger by August 21st. This year, we must have a cohort of 8 to be able to offer the program. If you have any questions, please let Katherine Jaeger know!

Horticulture Skill-a-thon The South Dakota 4-H Horticulture Skill-A-Thon is an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge of gardening practices and plant development, ability to identify plant specimens, and other horticulture related knowledge. The contest consists of three parts: judging, a written test, and plant identification. Study materials specific to the contest are available from South Dakota 4-H and the National Junior Horticulture Association.

Any time you learn something and show and tell it to another person, you are giving a presentation. Speaking face-to-face is one of the oldest forms of communication, and still the most effective. The listener hears your words, but more than that, they watch your face and your hands. They catch your enthusiasm, or your concern. It is a warm, personal way of communicating. No matter what 4-H project you are enrolled in, you can give a presentation. Every 4-H member should give at least one presentation per year. Important Considerations for Dairy Cattle Exhibitors State veterinary and public health officials have been investigating the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cows. While it causes less severe illness in cattle than in poultry, the disease remains of concern for all livestock and also for humans who come into contact with infected animals (APHIS, 2024). With the upcoming exhibition season upon us, it is important that all exhibitors are taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of HPAI in our state. As a dairy exhibitor, it is important to follow proper biosecurity procedures both at home and at exhibitions to ensure optimal disease prevention. Below are some exhibitor recommendations: 1. Familiarize yourself with the signs of influenza in dairy cattle. a. Common signs include decreased milk production, reduced appetite, thickened and/or discolored milk, lethargy, fever, and dehydration. b. Consult your local veterinarian if you suspect HPAI in your herd. 2. Clean and disinfect equipment regularly, especially before and after being used at an exhibition event.3. Refrain from sharing equipment with other exhibitors outside your household, especially at an exhibition event. 4. Isolate any animal that has returned from an exhibition before returning them back to the rest of the herd or other animals on the property. a. Consult your local veterinarian for further recommendations on isolation. As we make our way through the summer months, South Dakota 4-H will remain in close contact with state veterinarians as they monitor the progression of the disease in our area. Whether you are attending/participating in a dairy cattle exhibition or you are preparing for the fair season that is to come, make sure to monitor the health and safety of both your animals and you.
