Welcome Personal Statement

2 / 35

My name is Charles Li and I am a graduate student at the New York School of Interior Design. My roots are from China, a country full of richness, accessibility, and diversity. All of these features allowed me to become creative at a young age and pushed me to convey the arts through different mediums without any limitations. My everyday life inspires me as a designer and is reflective in my work. Gradually, I gain a deeper understanding of how ever cultural habits can shape the world we live in and experience everyday.

Boutique Hotel Brand Concept: The HIVE Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel located in the Beaux Arts-style Canadian Express Building lat the edge of Old Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Combining the harmonious nature with Montreal’s authentic sense if community, the HIVE Hotel is a destination resort that aims to unite multiple communities together and elevate them to a one-line luxurious experience. “Bees are one of the classic motifs of interior design, thanks largely to Napoleon. But their geometric marvel - the honeycomb - has also been adopted by designers as a perfect building block of pattern. In the swinging sixties, it took a turn toward Mod with David Hicks and Mark Hampton as champions. Today it’s architectural, bold, or brightly patchworked.” - House Beautiful Concept:

Swimming Into The Office OFFICE DESIGN FOR A NON-PROFIT HEADQUARTERS The Client: The Marine Megafauna Foundation conducts pioneering research on marine megafauna and uses scientific evidence to educate the public and government to influence long-lasting conservation strategies. The “coral reef”, with layers that connect it to each other and waves that stretch across the ocean, inspired the design. The ceiling panel’s structural system drew inspiration from waves. The space incorporates sustainable materials such as recycled wood for the tables. The color palette is a mix of bluea and coral. As a whole, the space feels immersive, and yet fluid, creating an underwater feeling.
