On the 15th of November 1998, the offices in Valletta were deserted, as the staff at Charles Grech & Co. headed off to the new offices situated in Palazzo CA Brugnera, Valley Road, Birkirkara.

Twenty-four years later, the

office still welcomes its staff and clientele on a daily basis.

However it was not until approximately two years after the offices moved, that Charles Grech retail shop in Birkirkara was open.

The company has succeeded to extend its operations into a number of challenging niche markets. Malta, by nature, is a complex market that inherited a diverse bricolage of English and Italian Culture and, notwithstanding its size, it still offers a display of business opportunity. Malta also hosts over a three million tourists each year making it an interesting yet competitive market to perform in.

The early days started from humble beginnings 141 years ago when Charles Grech himself, opened his first retail store and bar in the main street of the island's Capital City, Valletta.

Subsequently, he traded in fine quality tobacco products, pipes and alcohol for the distinguished community. His dedication to his work attracted the custom of Malta’s elite and the business grew quickly. Even through the dark days of World War II, while the threat of bombs was ever present, the doors remained

open to his valued patrons – business as usual.

Charles Grech also initiated a back office operation from the same store; a ship chandelling service for the Royal Navy that soon became a strong business arm that helped build the foundations for his heirs.

The success of Charles Grech was inherited by the next generation and the company, rapidly commanded the status of one of Malta's leading importers and distributors of wines and spirits and tobacco products.

Worldwide brands soon became interested in sole distribution and today; the company manages hundreds of brands many of which need no introduction.

Charles Grech owns and manages four retail outlets, situated in Birkirkara, Ta’ Xbiex, Swieqi and Sliema.

All of the outlets showcase all imported brands as well as many other popular international food and drink items. The outlet in Birkirkara also houses the largest walk-in humidor on the island featuring an extensive range of both Cuban and New World cigars.

The company's sales force is second to none and their wide fleets of branded vehicles cover every corner of the Maltese Islands.

Over the years, the company has also diversified its operations and today specialises in the requirements for weddings, events & banqueting.

Furthermore, Charles Grech still remains the foremost supplier to ship chandlers and duty-free yacht services. Moreover The company has an e-commerce site where customers are able to make direct purchases of the world's favorite brands delivered right to their door.

The managing of the company is spread over eight separate departments that are overseen

by Charles Grech's General Manager, Mr. Michael Darmanin, who together work hand in hand and aim at reaching the most positive outcome. These include the Financial team managed by the in-house Financial Controller, Mr. Pierre Sammut, Stock Control under the hands of Mr. Patrick Magri, wine and water taken care of by Mr. Alberto Rocchi, the Marketing team overseen by Mr. Dennis Fenech, the Tobacco and Wines and Spirits Sales Teams managed by Mr. James Dalli and Mr. Anthony Cutajar respectively and the retail staff run by Mr. Matthew Sammut.

Furthermore, the logistics department that is run by Mr. Mark Tanti works hand in hand with Mr. Antoine Cefai, warehouse manager who together liaise and aim at importing and delivering our brands to Charles Grech's loyal customers and clientele.

What is Sake?

Sake is over 1000 years old, made only with rice, water and Koji for fermentation. Sake is similar to wine and beer in its creation process. Premium Sake is best enjoyed chilled in a wine glass to enjoy its many wonderful aromas and flavour characteristics.

Junmai is the Word! Heavensake only produces junmai sakes, which means 'pure' in Japanese.

If you are to remember one word about sake then junmai is the one. It means neither alcohol nore sugar were added.

Pairing Heavensake goes very well with all kinds of foods and moments of the day, from an afternoon at the beach to fancy Wagyu beef dinners in town, or a pizza date at home. Add a piece of cucumber, ginger or raspberries in your sake to play around a little.

Heavensake is not meant to be drunk warm. Keep it refrigirated and away from sunlight. The bottle should remain upright and should be drank within two to eight months of the bottling date. Once opened, it can be kept in the fridge for several weeks with the cap on.
