Carmean has gained much popularity from college students all over the country due to his song parodies and perverted topics. He delivered a colorful selection of songs in reference to legends such as Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. Carmean stated he started doing song parodies because “he could never remember the original words” to songs. Besides s o n g parodies, he performed s o m e original songs l i k e “Dirty S a n A HEATHER BROWN PHOTO chez” and “Hilary Duff” which have been played on XM Radio. Besides be-
ing on tour for his live act, Carmean is a morning radio host in Miami and is frequently broadcasted on Sirius satellite radio. The second act, Lisa Landry, took the stage next. She performed an honest and unapologetic act of raw humor, incorporating stories from her childhood as well as her current personal life. She told amusing anecdotes about her hometown of New Orleans stating, “I went to college for eight years…I can’t read, but I can swim,” which is a light reference to Hurricane Katrina which took place two years ago. While Landry is from Louisiana, she has been actively making

The officer, after a few minutes of sitting in the stall, observed Craig lingering outside his stall and often peeking through the door crack. Soon after, he entered the stall next to that of the officer’s. The arresting officer’s police report explained what happened next: “At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I rec-
ognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot... The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times.” Craig defended himself

The “new” C-store looks great! It is so much easier to navigate around the store and even when it’s busy there is so much more room than there used to be. Not only that, but the selection seems to be a lot better. UNH gets a gold star for that one.
As if the grass in the quad wasn’t bad enough. So let’s put up a tent in the quad, blocking out all sunlight and water, while letting people trample the grass during the many events that were held there last week. I agree the tent was a pretty good idea in general, however campus beautification is going to now pay the price. I still think the quad needs to be dug up, re-fertilized, and re-sodded.
I was surprised when I went up to Pandini’s this week—there was actually a menu! Yes, I repeat: Pandini’s now has a menu! After two years of pointing at the display food and wondering, “what’s that?” now there is a comprehensive list of the food offered. Thank you! Welcome week was a blast. Most of the events were well attended and made for a fun week. I have high expectations for programming this year!
One thing that really upset me this week is the amount of people that went home. It’s always bothered me that people go home on the weekends, leaving the campus dead for a few days. What bothers me even more is how many freshmen went home—it was their first weekend here! Now that’s just sad.

On Saturday, September 1, Craig announced his resignation, after pressure from fellow Republicans who were worried about the scandal diminishing their election prospects. “I apologize for what I have caused,” said Senator Craig. Although leading members of his own party had called for him to step down, Craig steadfastly resisted resigning for days, contending that he had done nothing wrong and that his only mistake was pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

The team walked by the site overnight because the hole was covered, she said. When the entrance was discovered, the father called out and one of the girls answered, officials said. Crews later rappelled into the mine and found the girls and the vehicle at the bottom.

WEST HAVEN— Under a giant white tent between Bixler and Botwinik Halls, the class of 2011 entertained and impressed audience members with their performances in the annual New Student Talent Show on Monday, Aug. 27. The 12 acts show-
cased the unique capabilities and gifts of the incoming class at the University of New Haven through song, dance, and art. Audience members were entertained by guitarists of all different genres, singers (both a cappella and with accompaniment), a comedian, and a break dancer. The acts also included a magician with an amusing soda

can trick and a performer who was able to solve a rubix cube in one minute and eight seconds. At the end of the talent show, prizes were awarded to the top three competitors, judged by a few wellknown faces around campus: Assistant Director of Student Activities Lisa Saverese; Dean of Students, Rebecca Johnson; and
USGA President, Louis Eswood III. Third place, and a $25 Best Buy gift card, was given to Sarah Mangula, who sang the popular Dixie Chicks song, “Wide Open Spaces.” Second place, and a $50 Best Buy gift card, was awarded to Sarah King, who sang “Only Hope” from the hit movie A Walk to Remember. The largest prize
of the night, a $75 gift card to Best Buy, was awarded to Evan Morse and Matt Sirois for their rendition of the popular “Ants Go Marching.” The winners truly got the audience on their feet as they used humor and excellent musical talent to entertain the crowd. Morse and Sirois were given the opportunity to perform again as the opening
act for the Jim Spinnato hypnotist show on Friday, Aug. 31. As always, the New Student Talent Show provided great entertainment and a chance to get to know students from the freshmen class through a night of stellar performances.

tain with the hope that some sign of the miners will turn up. The hope is that the camera will be able to find something after being lowered into one of the holes. However, there is still the concern of whether or not the camera will be able to fit into one of the bore holes which are eight feet and five eights inches long. Even if the camera can squeeze through, many obstacles will be in its way. There are great masses of debris and large chunks of loose rocks that may fall and destroy the camera. To add to the difficulty, director of the Institute for Safety Security Rescue Technology at the University of South Florida Robin Murphy said, “There's mud, there's rocks, there's things that make it unfavorable.”
The addition of the seventh bore hole put family members of the missing miners somewhat at ease. Prior to the additional hole, co-owner of the mine, Bob Murray said that he was going to close the mine and end all search efforts for the missing men. Consideration for terminating the search was the result of an August 16 accident at the mine. A second collapse occurred, killing three people and wounding six while they were digging through debris inside the mine. Family members have requested a hole large enough to lower a rescue capsule into the mine. However, mine officials have said it is too dangerous to for any manoperated underground activity to take place. Other experts have said the mine is collapsing into itself as
the drilling shifts the rock pillars. Despite the bleak outlook, many towns and communities have been working hard at setting up fundraising and support events for the families of the missing men. Family spokesman Sonny Olsen stated all the money raised during these events will be given to the families and not used for any legal expenses. Also, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman met with the newly formed Utah Mine Safety Committee to discuss the mine accident and also to discuss ways to prevent future occurrences of accidents. “Rescue efforts at the Crandall Canyon Mine were suspended indefinitely” Friday, Aug. 31, the Associated Press reported Saturday.
USGA President’s Corner How to Get Involved It’s now a week into school and I hope that many of you are starting to settle into your new home. Classes have started and I’m sure that some of you are already getting bogged down with homework. In just a few days, the first USGA meeting of the year will take place and I hope to see many of you there. The meetings will be held in the Alumni Lounge at noon every Friday and all clubs and organizations which are recognized by the USGA are required to be there. So, if you missed the club fair or didn’t see a specific organization, this would be a good time to meet up with the representative from that organization to find out how to become involved. The USGA has several different groups of people who attend
the meetings. The Senate is comprised of 20 senators who represent the interests of the student body as well as a representative of each class of students. Currently we have nine open senator positions available and if you are interested in becoming a senator, applications and requirements are posted outside of my office on the third floor of Bartels and online at www.chargervoice. com. Top-twenty clubs are determined by a point system that evaluates events that the organization hosts. Becoming a club representative is great a great way for freshmen to become involved in the USGA and have voting powers. Remember that any undergraduate student can attend a USGA meeting and voice his or her opinion on a topic that is being discussed. The Pros and Cons of Facebook
No one can deny the power of Facebook. The urge to see what everyone is doing at every possible moment is consuming. During my senior year of high school, people started creating Facebook accounts so they could stay in touch with all of their friends when they went away to college. Now, people are expected to be on Facebook just because everyone else is. Just like any other social website, Facebook has its good and bad characteristics. However, what people tend not to realize is that we are the reason the pros and cons of the site are apparent. The usefulness of Facebook is reflected by the way each individual uses it. I’ve seen Facebook used for some great things. When I needed some sports writers for this paper, I sent a message out to a group of people that I thought might
be interested. The Facebook message is more powerful than an e-mail, especially at UNH where we get ten e-mails every half hour (but I won’t get

And while at first I did not like the idea of the site being open to current high school students, I now appreciate that development because I find myself speaking to my sixteenyear-old brother a lot more than I did freshman year. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, all of these positive uses tend to disappear under the mass of misuses of the site. I know this feels like an aged topic, but recently the dark side of Facebook grew even darker in my eyes and I cannot stop thinking about it. Now that I am in my third year of Facebook use, it is becoming more and more apparent to me that people use the site merely to get attention. First of all, the news feed feature has been active now for more than six months. There has been plenty of time for people to figure out how to change their personal settings
so that their business is not plastered all over the home page of the site. Just so you know, there is an option to not have your relationship news appear on the news feed. As much as I love gossip, finding out that you and your boyfriend broke up via the news feed is so anticlimactic that it takes all the fun out of it. Especially for those of you that break up and then make up consistently, turn the alert off! Why do you want us to know that you broke up yesterday if you just ended up getting back together today? Even worse is when people dedicate their profiles to illustrating how unhappy they are. My best friend just created a Facebook profile. I was overjoyed when I saw that she finally joined the site. However, my joy was crushed when I realized that her profile was devoted to her cancer. She was
diagnosed with lymphoma in May and has been going to chemotherapy treatments ever since. If I had seen that she was using Facebook to share her progress with people that care about her, then I would be happy that she finally joined the site. However, the groups that she joined and the comments she wrote in her “About Me” broke my heart. Everything in her profile says something about how much cancer sucks. While I know that cancer is deadly and terrible to have, I do not find it necessary to complain about it on such a social and open site. This instance is not the first
The Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch, which aims to “restore common sense” to America’s courts, holds an annual Wacky Warning Label Contest. This year, the winner was a warning label found on a washing machine at a laundromat. The label warned, “Do not put any person in this washer.” Does that mean that if somebody decides to put a person inside of a washing machine and the person is injured, the dolt who thought it’d save them time in the shower could sue the manufacturer of the wash-
ing machine? The manufacturer actually has to put a warning label on the machine telling people that? How about the Minnesota company that, on a personal watercraft, has a warning label to warn users to “Never use a lit match or open flame to check fuel level.” Or the California Super Lotto ticket which warns, “Do not iron.” Why the hell would you iron a lottery ticket anyways!? Or how about the Pennsylvanian woman who found a warning on her cell phone: “Don’t try to dry your phone in a microwave
oven.” We’ve all heard about the airline peanuts what warn, “Warning: May contain nuts,” or the Michigan sports facility bathroom that warns “Recycled flush water unsafe for drinking.” And when I read those I chuckle, assuming they’re just nonsense on the internet. But the Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch is actually finding these warning labels, and is actually verifying them! If you go to McDonald’s, as some people did a few years ago, and the coffee you’re given

It is too bad that social sites like Facebook only get noticed when they are misused because there really are plenty of positive ways to use the site. I wouldn’t be defending Facebook if I thought that the site itself prompts individuals to use the site negatively. In fact, the site can only be used negatively when we decide to misuse it.

The trip was a bit long and throughout it, I found the woman immersed in a book she was reading. I was very much impressed by the way she decided to spend her time during the travel. Even though she was pretty old, she had recognized the importance of reading and had used it wisely. Reading is a very commendable habit and is very important especially for a student like you and I. With loads of reading material available to us as part of our academics, cultivating good reading habits help us to make the best use of these materials. We can also read books for our leisure. Once you get
hooked with reading, the time you spend on reading your favorite book will turn out to be one of your favorite activities. There are many ways to improve our reading. Here are the seven best tips that I found to be most useful. 1. Set aside a regular time to read. Some people read first thing in the morning, and some before bed. Most people (like me) like to read while traveling. Make your own decisions about reading. Have a reading hour or day where your main job is to read. 2. Always have a book around. Try to carry a book wherever you go. When you feel bored, you can just read a few pages from it. After sometime, you will automatically take out your book for reading even if you are not bored. Halloween: A Disappointing Remake By JOSEPH CHAPMAN STAFF WRITER

The trend over the past several years has been to remake cult-classic horror films. Popular movies from the seventies and eighties like Black Christmas, The Hills Have Eyes, and The Amityville Horror have been updated to be more accessible to a contemporary audience. But has the trend gone too far this time? Prolific movie producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein held a meeting with fairly new director Rob Zombie about remaking the 1978 horror masterpiece Halloween. While one cannot blame Zombie for taking certain creative liberties with the story, it is safe to say that his efforts fall drastically short of doing the movie justice. For those unfamiliar with the film, Hal-
loween is a story about a psychopath named Michael Meyers. As a child, Michael murdered his older sister and was locked away in a mental institution presumably for life. However, havoc ensues when Meyers escapes the night he was supposed to be transferred to another mental facility. He returns to his hometown and murders several teenagers in pursuit of his younger sister. A major difference between Rob Zombie’s Halloween and the original is that Zombie puts an emphasis on Michael Meyers’ back story. Unlike the original, a good portion of the film is given to showing Meyers as a child and the hardships he endured. Also, it gives an explanation as to what drove Meyers to transform into a deranged murderer. Zombie must receive
credit for his attempt at making Meyers a sympathetic soul. But the way in which he executes his plan makes his effort a failure. Zombie writes in clichés. A young boy who gets roughed up by his family and peers becomes a serial killer is far from a fresh idea. In fact, it makes at least a quarter of this film painfully boring. While on the subject of clichés, the rest of the movie is predictable and a long way of being remotely scary. There are scenes that should be suspenseful, but because the scenario has been done in just about every horror movie, people will find themselves checking their wrist watches to see how much longer until the end. Another poor aspect of the film is the characters. There is not a single character worth caring about,

LOS ANGELES—In the annals of celebrity crime, record producer Phil Spector's murder trial may stand as one of the strangest. The saga of a forgotten music industry legend and a fading cult movie actress found dead in his hilltop castle is the stuff of film noir, those dark epics that explore a world of glamour, dread and danger. At the center of the drama is Spector, 67, a diminutive figure in long frock coats and wild hairdos, a
millionaire rock music producer past his heyday, holed up in a Victorian mansion far from the Hollywood music industry he once ruled. The tragic figure is Lana Clarkson, 40, a gorgeous 6-foot actress with Marilyn Monroe dreams who craved fame more than anything but was so down on her luck that she took a $9-anhour hostess job at the House of Blues night club. Ironically, she became more famous in death, her picture splashed across newspapers and TV screens the morning after Feb.
3, 2003 when she was found with a bullet through her mouth in the formal red foyer of Spector's home. It would take eight months for police to charge Spector with a crime and four years to bring the case to trial. Now, after five months of testimony, the end is near. which in the horror genre is a pitfall. The main characters are bratty, loud teenagers and one foolish doctor. In the original, Dr. Loomis is the hero. All fans of the movie know what I am talking about. In the remake, he is unentertaining and unlikable. The film does deserve some praise for its makeup and costume design. Michael Meyers’ mask may be the most frightening image in horror. Also, Zombie did not go too over the top with gore. While some scenes may make the faint of heart turn in disgust, the movie manages to keep its intensity without overdoing the violence. Ultimately, Rob Zombie had the chance to update a classic and make it his own. All he managed to accomplish was making a film that can be best described as lame.

bie’s poor job will infuriate them. For those who are unfamiliar with the film’s franchise, do not bother seeing this film. Rent the original.
the theater disappointed and regretful. Before everyone starts thinking that the whole movie was terrible, it wasn’t. The fact remains, however, that it was advertised as being a lot better than it turned out to be. People have the habit of looking forward to something so much that they hype it up to be more than it is. This is one of those times. Everyone goes in excited and comes out feeling a little let down. The acting in this film was relatively good for the most part. Christopher Walken acted well but didn’t have much speaking time. The other ac-
tors also did their jobs well. Thomas Lennon played the role of Karl Wolfshtagg, the very conceited – and even more competitive – German ping pong champion. His part was played very well though some of his lines were more mean or odd than they were funny. Basically, if anyone was getting themselves excited for the next showing of Balls of Fury, try not to get too excited. It’s a relatively good movie but it simply fails to live up to the hype and the reputation of its actors. Prevent disappointment and just wait until it comes out on video.

The movie was based on basic humor and most of it was not all that hilarious. After paying over ten dollars for a movie, you expect to laugh at least more than once. Yankees Sweep Red Sox

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox renewed their storied rivalry for a three-game set last week. The Red Sox came into the series winning six out of their last seven games while the Yankees were coming off a road trip that saw them struggle against the Angles and Tigers. Coming into the series, the Red Sox led the Yankees by eight games in the AL East. The Yankees were also two games back in the wildcard behind the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees took game one of the series on Wednesday, Aug. 29 by a score of 5-3. Andy Pettitte, who won five straight games for the Yankees coming into the game, took the mound. Opposing Pettitte was Daisuke Matsuzaka, who came into the game with a 13-10 record. Pettitte was able to hold the Red Sox at bay for seven strong innings while allowing three runs and six
hits. Looking to erase the memory of the 16-0 defeat against the Tigers the night before, the Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 in the first inning. Manny Ramirez got the Red Sox on the board launching a solo shot into right field. Boston was able to tie the game in the third when Dustin Pedroia lead off with a triple, and then later scored off of a David Ortiz sacrifice fly. The game was tied in the bottom of the seventh inning when Johnny Damon came to the plate and hit a ball that was just inside the foul pole for a 2-run home run, giving the Yankees a 5-3 lead. Looking to hold onto the lead, the Yankees brought in Jaba Chamberlain in the eighth. For the first time since being called up, Chamberlain fell into some trouble. The Red Sox had runners on first and second with two outs. Chamberlain fell to a 3-2 count against J.D. Drew, but got Drew to strike out on a 3-2 slider to end
the inning. Mariano Rivera was able to close the game in the ninth inning to give the Yankees the win. Game two of the series took place on Thursday, Aug. 30. Roger Clemens took the mound for the Yankees and held a no-hitter into the fifth inning and a 3-0 lead before it was broken up by a solo home-run hit by David Ortiz. The game got interesting in the seventh inning when Roger Clemens had two outs and proceeded to walk Kevin Youkilis, which was followed by a single hit by J.D. Drew. Clemens however was able to get out of the jam when Jason Varitek grounded out to second that would both end the inning and end Clemens’s night on the mound. In the bottom of the seventh, Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez hit a solo home run that would prove to be the difference in the Yankees’ victory. Kyle Farnsworth relieved Clemens in the eighth and gave up a two-run
home run by Kevin Youkilis that made the game 4-3 with the Yankees in the lead. Mariano Rivera came in with two outs in the eighth and managed to get the final four outs in the game, giving the Yankees a 4-3 victory. In the third and final game of the series, the combination of pitching and hitting allowed the Yankees to sweep the Red Sox. Chien-Ming Wang carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, while Robinson Cano’s two home runs got the Yankees in front 2-0. The game was opened up in the eighth when Bobby Abreu smashed an RBI double off Hideki Okajima. Abreu attempted to steal third, causing Jason Varitek to throw an error, which allowed Abreu to score from third and Alex Rodriguez to score all the way from first. The ninth inning contained some controversy. Yankees reliever Jaba Chamberlain threw two fastballs at Kevin Youkilis’s head. Chamberlain
was quickly ejected from the game and Edwar Ramirez came in to record the final two outs for the Yankees. At the conclusion of the series, the race for the AL East tightened
up with the Yankees trailing the Red Sox by five games with twenty-nine games to play. The Yankees were also tied with the Seattle Mariners in the AL wildcard race.

Alternative Rock Releases Heat Up Music Scene By SARA MCGUIRE STAFF WRITER

College students everywhere welcome the summer generally as a time to relax, sleep late, go to the beach, visit friends, and attend concerts. This summer was no different. However, this summer also saw the anticipated releases of new albums from mainstream alternative bands. Three of these bands really had a fantastic summer. The White Stripes, known for their odd lyrics and catchy beats (“And I’m talking to myself at night/ Because I can’t forget/Back and forth through my mind/ Behind a cigarette,” “Seven Nation Army”
from Elephant) are enough to make even the most traditionalist alternative fan sing in pure ecstasy along to the lyrics and rockgod riffs. Known by many to be the most original out of all of their albums, Icky Thump is a compilation of the Stripes’ favorite sounds while maintaining the bluesy and often Zeppelin-esque sound and edgy lyrics. Another highlyanticipated release was by New York City’s Interpol. Our Love To Admire is another album of indie-alt/rock that more than lives up to its expectations. The steady beats, deliberate guitar, and curious piano on the tracks
push the band into the spotlight. Known for their epic romanticism and moody, downcast sound, this album delivers, especially with such a song as “No I in Threesome.” The most well known song on the album, “The Heinrich Maneuver,” is not only danceable, but downright enjoyable. The rich guitar compiled with dramatic lyrics makes for a deeply sentimental, and metaphoric, piece of what can only be called artwork. One band that will certainly be heard more about in the future is The New Pornographers. With a name so intriguing, their sound is a pleasant surprise. The upbeat group, known
especially for their electronic sound, released Challengers in early August. This new album, similar in sound to their previous album, Twin Cinema, is softer in sound, with smarter lyrics targeted at older audiences than the usual alternative band. Among the more familiar songs on the album are the tracks “Challenger” and “My Rights Versus Yours.” These two, along with “Go Places,” are audio melancholy that describe love, exploration of the unknown, finality, spontaneity,
relationships, loss, change, and a plethora of other very real emotions and situations. Much different from their second album, Electric Version, the new album is proceeding on a more sophisticated and inspired path. Among these three releases were many more of great repute. Twin duo Tegan and Sara didn’t let their fans down with the July release of their latest album, The Con. Another album gathering much attention is Rilo Kiley’s Under The Blacklight. The alternative cir-
cuit certainly doesn’t have a lack of talent, and the summer’s releases as well as those to come this fall certainly prove this. With such different and unique sounds that please such a variety of people, alternative rock is on its way up in the musical world, as genres and subgenres develop within the main genre itself. The surest thing of all is that the world can expect great things, and not only from these bands, but from the entire alternative community.

He wound up very late at the House of Blues. When the club closed at 2 a.m. he asked Clarkson to go home with him for a drink. What happened next is the heart of the case, with each side presenting compelling evidence. Prosecutor Alan Jackson claimed at the
start that it would be a simple case. "The evidence is going to paint a picture of a man who on Feb. 3, 2003, put a loaded pistol in Lana Clarkson's mouth _ inside her mouth _ and shot her to death," he said in his opening statement to jurors. But by the time 77 witnesses had testified and more than 600 pieces of evidence were submitted, the case was anything but simple. Finally, four years after Clarkson’s death, the trial is coming to a close.
