The University of New Haven Chargers defeated the Stonehill College Skyhawks at UNH’s first homecoming ceremony in over five years this past Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the newly dedicated Ralph DellaCamera Stadium.

The much anticipated “Blueout” reached the newly dedicated Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium Saturday Sept. 26, as the New Haven Chargers hosted the Stonehill College Skyhawks. After opening the season with an impressive victory at Lincoln University, New Haven saw their record drop to 1-2 with loses against Assumption Col-

lege and Bentley University. The homecoming crowd of approximately 3,500 was at full throat from the games onset.

The Chargers won the coin toss and opened the game scoring on that drive with a 35-yard field goal from kicker Michael Herrera. The Skyhawks responded quickly on their next two possessions, picking up a field goal and a touchdown, resulting in a 10-3 Stonehill lead. With one minute remaining in

the first half, New Haven began their final drive from the Stonehill 35 yard line.

QB Ryan Osiecki threw the ball on five consecutive plays, hitting WR Jason Thompson for a 5-yard touchdown with four seconds remaining in the half. The extra point was blocked by Stonehill, leaving UNH down by a point heading into the locker rooms.

Did You Stay Safe on Campus Last Week?

From Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 we addressed campus safety with Campus Safety Week.

The University had a series of events that had to do with making everyone on campus, both staff and students, feel safe. The first was an ice cream truck that gave out free ice cream and advertised for the Campus Safety Forum later that evening.

Although there were not many people at the Forum, the people who did attend touched on some very important issues.

Some of the people involved in the Forum were Rebecca Kitchell, Officer Mark Toledo, Patty Christiano, and the Rape Crisis Center Advocate for the UNH campus, Melissa. Melissa wanted people to know that there is support on campus for any individuals who have been sexually abused. The center focuses on those who

need to talk or just need to know what to do next. She has experience in dealing with sexual abuse because of her work at the Milford Rape Crisis Center, and can handle the problem with care and diligence.

Another issue that Officer Mark Toledo addressed was pepper spray or mace.

First and foremost, they are the same thing. Second, some students do not know if they can carry it around with them or they have heard rumors that they are not allowed to have it on campus. Toledo said that if used properly and in the right situations, pepper spray is allowed. If used in the wrong situation, it could lead to an arrest.

Toledo and Kitchell also both agreed that if everyone simply uses common sense, the campus would continue to be safe, if not safer. Some common sense tips are not to walk alone at night, only walk in well-lit areas, and do not meet up with strangers.

Another event involved in safety week was the DUI Simulator. Using a computer, it simulated the effects of alcohol on driving.

It has the cloudy vision that some experience when he or she is drunk, late reaction time, and overcompensation. The point of the simulator was to warn people not to drive drunk because it puts the driver, the passengers, and other drivers on the road in danger. Although this is a lesson that has been banged into the heads of drivers everywhere for years now, the DUI simulator provided a “real-life” way to experience the lessons we’ve heard for years.

The moral of the week’s events is to use common sense and call campus police, a Resident Assistant, or someone else in authority that can help you handle a situation that needs help.

Also, Jintao’s promise to increase nuclear or nonfossil fuels by 15 percent by 2020 pro-

vides little hope for reducing carbon emissions. Utilizing China’s strong rivers for hydroelectric power may seem innovative, but giant dams like the Three Gorges Dam, which will drown 244 square miles of carbon-breathing plantlife when finished, can be counterproductive.

Since methane, yet another greenhouse gas, is released into the atmosphere when large areas of forest and farmland are flooded to create new dams, it is ineffective and potentially harmful.

Obama and Jintao lead the two countries that are responsible for 40 percent of the emissions that cause global warming, and yet Japan, who accounts for only 4 percent, provided more innovative ideas than China and the U.S. combined. Obama insisted upon nations with a “strong industrial base” to accept any agreement regarding a decrease in emissions, silently acknowledging countries like China, India, and Brazil in order to reduce the burden on developing countries.

For the sake of humanity, let’s hope Copenhagen is more successful than NY.

To d a y is September 24, 2009, a day that doctors said I would not make through one year ago. Today I thank God and everyone else for their support throughout my injury. I am working hard throughout my recovery, and I know that one day

I will be 100 percent recovered. Doctors have said I can only get to 90 percent, but I will push for 100.

Throughout my injury I have been to a lot of places, like the White

House, and I have received a lot of awards because of how positive I have been since the incident. Once again thank you for all of the support and letters I received while

hospitalized. Thank you for keeping track of my injury and progress through the websites and articles which have been published. Thank You!!!!

On Saturday Sept.

26, during the pregame of the Chargers Homecoming game, President Kaplan and Director of Athletics Debbie Chin took to the fifty yard line to start the honorary dedication of the Ralph F. DellaCamera field.

For those who missed it, or anyone who may have been unable to hear the ceremony over the roar of the excited University of New Haven fans, here is a brief synopsis. President Kaplan took the microphone and spoke about the old football program here at the University of New Haven. He mentioned how we were considered a “powerhouse” and the “best football program in the state”.

For those who have never been to the Equinox Diner on Boston Post Road, the small diner is a large step up for traditional dining in the area.

Serving high quality food at a diner price, the restaurant serves as a perfect introduction to the “diner” atmosphere. From the

traditional eggs and bacon breakfasts to brie and turkey lunches, to seafood stuffed dinners with drinks, the Equinox Diner provides great service and platters to its customers.

On this particular Friday, The Equinox was celebrating the cause of its creation: the fall equinox on Sept. 22. The Equi-

nox, which marks the changing of seasons, was also the day the owner was married and the name which inspired the restaurant. For all the diners that came in on Friday, the owner of the Equinox offered a unique gift: a gift card equal to the amount spent for their meals.

They also offered free champagne, lots of

ordinator Mark Whipple, and Jacksonville Jaguars player Roger Graham. Finally, he brought Ralph F. DellaCamera Senior and Junior onto the field to acknowledge their contributions to our stadium, field, and renewed football program.

Ralph F. DellaCamera Jr., managing member of DellaCamera Capital Management LLC, spoke to all the students, family, and friends sitting in the homecoming audience. He shared with us monumental pieces of advice: “This world isn’t about how hard you get hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That is how winning is done.”

He urged those in attendance to take hits, keep in stride, and always push for their goals. DellaCamera finished his speech with a heart touching nod to his father, saying “Dad, this field is named in your honor, for teaching and in-

stilling in me the belief that I should never give up and that I should believe in myself.”

President Kaplan finished the field dedication by motioning for a large banner to be pulled from the scoreboard, officially naming the field and the stadium. When the ropes refused to pull and the banner refused to fall, it was as if DellaCamera’s speech was coming true: although life may not always be perfect, the ability to keep going makes you strong.

In an almost iconic moment, members of the new football team (our mascot, a player, and members of athletics) joined together to attempt to bring the banner down.

The banner finally fell during an impromptu halftime ceremony and our stadium, our football field, the return of University of New Haven football, and a renewed school spirit were officially noticed. GO CHARGERS!

The New Haven offense had two drives stall to begin the second half; however the third drive yielded different results. Osiecki was able to connect on a 38-yard pass to WR Chris Ruffin, taking the Charger offense into Stonehill territory. The pivotal play of the drive was a successful fourth down conversion pass from Osiecki to TE Zach Vonder Linden. RB Victor Jones would pound in a 1-yard touchdown run four plays later, once again giving New Haven a five point lead. The Chargers failed on a two point conversion attempt leaving the score at 15-10 head-

ing to the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter opened to four punts, two for each team, before either one found the end zone.

The Skyhawks broke the stalemate when a fourth and goal attempt from the New Haven four yard line connected, giving Stonehill a 16-15 lead.

However, New Haven was determined; as head coach Peter Rossomando put it, “they fought their tails off and never gave up out there.”

The Chargers began their final possession at the 30 yard line, needing at least a field goal to win the game. Osiecki was calm under pressure all afternoon, never more so than on the game’s final drive, and converted on two fourth downs. The

play of the day came with 21 seconds left in the game on a 19yard touchdown pass from Osiecki to WR Sharieff Hall, who said of the play, “It took forever to come down to me, but when it did…it was perfect.”

The Chargers extended their lead from 21-16 to 23-16 on a successful two point attempt. The New Haven defense sealed up the victory, swatting down two consecutive hail mary passes as time expired. Ryan Osiecki characterized the win as being “good for morale, especially because it happened in comeback fashion.”

The win improves the Chargers record to 2-2 on the season, and they will travel across town to take on the Southern Connecticut Owls on Friday night.

Racism, or a Bad Joke?

What, exactly, is racism? I believe everyone, to a certain extent, has some racist qualities and will spread them at some point or another.

Whether this means telling a “harmless” joke or actually practicing a hate crime, neither is kind nor moral.

With that said, however, I don’t believe that a banner spotted in the news last week was racist.

Since I was a freshman back in 2006 (wow that makes me feel old), I have participated in Club Fair’s during open house. I have sat with the Forensic Science and Chemistry Club, Alpha Lambda Delta, and the 5-6-7-8 Dance Team. It has always been interesting to sit and watch prospective students, a role each and every one of us once played, come through in hopes of finding an activity they would enjoy. Every year, the USGA sponsored Club Fairs meet with some sort of scrutiny and this year is, surprisingly, no different.

After the presentation was over the students left, and I was surprised to find myself waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

Does this seem familiar? It should. I waited a lot in the beginning too. I was finally ready to talk to these high school students, and they had just left.

They came back eventually, sure, but by this point most club members were frustrated,

and easily showing it.

I spent maybe an hour, if that, actually talking to students. Many took newspapers and frisbees, and a couple asked genuine questions. But for the most part, the clubs seemed like more of an inconvenience, and the purpose we have held for my four years here was lost amidst confusion and annoyances.

Is there a way to fix this? I definitely think so. For one: try to hold the club fair in a separate location from college talks or, if they are needed to be kept together, make sure the clubs arrive either before the lecture starts or after it ends.

That way we aren’t

seen as interruptions.

Also, if clubs are there before hand, keep quiet during the presentation! When you were a freshman, I’m sure you actually wanted to hear what your faculty had to say. And finally, let’s try to be more organized! It never hurts to make sure that everyone is on the same page and aware of what is about to happen. It keeps people from getting frustrated…and from waiting. And waiting.

Let’s try to make open house club fairs more efficient next time around! The clubs and organizations, as well as prospective students, will all appreciate it!

But in Surrogates, this feeling does not occur, and this detachment from the film’s fantastic setting along with mediocre acting and unimaginative dialogue is what draws it back in the end.

Sometimes I wish I had a surrogate, just to avoid enduring the pain in some parts of the movie.

Nonetheless, Surrogates is not a horrendous film. It does have its shining moments. First and foremost, the special effects were a plus.

Surrogates was definitely more successful than X-Men: The Last Stand when it came to making their actors look younger. Bruce Willis’s surrogate was right on point and

The somewhat anticipated movie Surrogates, plugged itself into theaters this past weekend. Many of you might have seen bits and pieces of the trailer on television with a perfectly young looking Bruce Willis, and might carry mixed feelings about the film. Well, in case you’re wondering if Surrogates lived up to its promising creative storyline, in my eyes the answer is- not really.

The film, though brilliant with plot, did not do much for me. When you look around a theater and see people answering phone calls and walking out for whatever reason, that usually means that the film is not that interesting.

Quite frankly, I even caught myself enjoying my chocolate covered raisins more than some parts in the movie.

Instrument Profile: Mbira

The Shona people of Zimbabwe have many secrets and many great traditions. Perhaps their greatest in the musical sense is the mbira, which is thought to be originated around a thousand years ago in the region of Africa now known as Zimbabwe, first played by the Zezuru tribe.

This remarkable instrument hailing from the southeast African state is part of the idiophone family of instruments, as classified by the Hornbostel- Sachs system. It is known as a plucked idiophone, because it is played primarily with the thumbs as well as the index finger on the right hand. At first blush it is a rather ridiculous looking instrument. It is comprised of 12 to 28 metallic keys, each

of different length to omit a different frequency or pitch. The mbira is often times played inside a hollow gourd or bowl for the purpose of resonance, thus amplifying the surprisingly quiet instrument for public appearances.

Mbira dzavadzimu, the official name of the national instrument of Zimbabwe, is roughly translated as “the voice of the ancestors”, and rightfully so because of the longstanding history and kinship the people have shared with the instrument.

The predominant music of the region, known as mbira music, is traditionally played by more than one mbira performer.

It is typically composed of several players using polyrhythm, a technique in which several different rhythms are played at the same time. An interesting way of ex-

plaining polyrhythm to those not so musically inclined is as follows: imagine a very tall father walking with his short son.

They both take their first step at the same time; however the son must take more steps to stay with his father, so their steps don’t match but relative to each other the two are constant and at the end of the walk they end at the same time. Many different manifestations of this instrument have been invented by hundreds of different societies around the world, including the kalimba.

Most of today’s college students never got the chance to enjoy the Beatles in their heyday, but the University of New Haven had some visitors on Saturday, Sept.

Three acts of live music, eclectic costume changes, and animated actors comprise the stage show that is aptly titled Beatlemania Again. For two and a half hours, four passionate men play a tribute to one of the most legendary bands of all time, and remind everyone just how unique the Beatles truly were.

The band played the best of the Beatles; “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Please Please Me,” and “Eight Days a Week,” to name a few. There were no mistakes, just a crowd happy to be hearing these timeless songs live. Before playing “In My Life,” John Lennon told the crowd that the song was for those who couldn’t be there, including Patrick Swayze, Mary Travers, and the locally beloved Annie Le. Intermission came and went, and Beatlemania Again continued in chronological order, opening Act II with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The costumes were identical to the original band’s colorful, satin, military outfits from the Sgt. Pepper album cover.

“Help,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” were all played as bright lights flashed across the stage to resemble the psyche-

delic period.

Suddenly, everyone but Lennon jumped off of the stage. He picked up an electric guitar, and played a stripped-down version of “Strawberry Fields Forever.” The crowd exploded with excitement and sang along. George Harrison came back to play “Here Comes the Sun,” on acoustic guitar. His performance was outstanding, and the crowd sang along, again, while he whispered, “It’s all right.”

The entire band returned to the stage for their final and best act. Each man was dressed differently, and John Lennon was in his signature white suit. Here they were at the end of the era, but playing the songs that the crowd seemed to enjoy the most. Students danced along to “Revolution” and “Come Together,” and chanted the “na na na na’s” to “Hey Jude.”

After a standing ovation, the encore was “Twist and Shout.”

The crowd was doing just that, and danced their way out after stopping to say hello to the band.

mosphere when their compressors leak, or when appliances are thrown out and their refrigerant eventually escapes.

If hydrocarbons are accidentally released into the atmosphere, their effect on trapping heat is about 1,400 times less than conventional refrigerants, said Pete Gosselin, director of engineering for Ben & Jerry's.

The fuels are flammable, of course, but current models only use the amount contained in two or three cigarette lighters.

Electronic components are designed to prevent igniting a possible leak.

"It's extremely potent," Gosselin said.

"And as the world develops, especially in developing nations, refrigeration use is one of the first technologies that comes on board."

The appliances cost about the same as similar conventional freezers and use about 10 percent less electricity.

"And that turns out to be a huge gain in terms of your carbon footprint, that 10 percent gain in efficiency," Gosselin said.

"Every kilowatt hour that comes in the wall, comes in with a certain amount of CO2 footprint with it and if you can knock 10 percent off that, that's huge."

Gosselin said Ben & Jerry's still hasn't determined whether

hydrocarbon refrigerants can be used in larger applications.

Coca-Cola spokeswoman Lisa Manley said the company decided on using carbon dioxide because their equipment requires more cooling capacity and would require using more hydrocarbon refrigerant, which they decided against partly out of safety concerns.

While carbon dioxide equipment is more costly, CocaCola is hoping to convince others to adopt the technology and drive the price down through increased demand, Manley said.

The U.S. will be playing catch-up.

Unilever, which has more than 2 million ice cream cabinets worldwide, including 100,000 in the United States, now has more than 400,000 hydrocarbon-based units in Europe, Latin America and Asia, Gosselin said.

About 42,000 bottle vending machines using hydrocarbons or carbon dioxide as refrigerant also have been installed in China, Europe and Latin America by CocaCola, Carlsberg and PepsiCo. And McDonald's has opened two pilot restaurants in Denmark that don't use traditional refrigerants, according to the Refrigerants, Naturally Web site.

The Environmental Protection Agency, which allowed Ben & Jerry's to test the new coolers, has already

completed a preliminary review on the freezers, as well as the new GE refrigerator.

It expects to make a proposed rule on the machines available for public comment later this year, and a final decision could be issued by early next year, said Drusilla Hufford, director of the EPA's Stratospheric Protection Division.

On a recent afternoon, Dominic Abruzzese, a senior at George Washington University, said he wasn't aware the freezer steps away from him at the university's Gallery Market was any different than others nearby.

"I knew Freon was bad, but I didn't know people were switching to propane freezers," Abruzzese said.

The Ridley Park, Pa., student said he would consider buying a propane-based refrigerator or freezer in the future.

"I guess I would be more likely to buy a freezer that was more environmentally friendly, for sure," he said.

Cathy Cerda, a mother of five from Herndon, Va., said she also wasn't aware the Ben & Jerry's freezer was different.

"If I had to make a decision between the two, well give me that one," she said. "But if it was a lot more expensive, because for me having five children, I think the expense would top my list."

Not that I have read it, but the book is usually better than the movie, and in this case, I wouldn’t doubt it.

Surrogates is one of those films that you will not regret seeing, but that you don’t care much for in the end.

Let’s just say it won’t spark up conversation.

Honestly, I feel that if Bruce Willis wasn’t in the movie, the movie would have not been successful at all. So in all, I would wait for t to come out on television before watching it, it certainly is not worth the seven or ten bucks. Surrogates gets a C+ in my book.
