WEST HAVEN—On Monday, Sept. 3, University of New Haven students gathered in the residential quad for the end of an exciting and event-filled Welcome Week. Previous events had included a talent show, comedians, a hypnotist, and OL Pie in the Face. This time around, students crowded the quad with blankets, chairs, snacks, and friends for a traditional Labor Day event: the Drive-In Movie. Guests to the drive-in set up their spaces across the quad and treated them-

Also, the show boasted a larger number of performances than past shows. Finally, the duration was cut from three hours to two, offering hope that a shorter show might prove to be more entertaining. The final result was lacking on all four counts.

LAS VEGAS—For over two decades, MTV has held an annual award show honoring the art of the music video. From the mid-eighties to the early-nineties, the MTV Video Music Awards have provided viewers with musical performances, surprise guests, and comedy. In the last few years, this tradition has solemnly fallen into the pit of despair. Fans knew the end was near when the show was moved from New York City (and most commonly Radio City Music Hall) to Miami, Florida in 2004.

The new location proved not to be wild enough to add any oomph to the show. In fact, the Palms, and more specifically the Pearl Theater, seemed to be incomprehensibly crowded. The host-less format did nothing to help the progression of the show or the excitement of the audience. Big industry names sat in the audience seemingly bored, like they all had somewhere better to be. The majority of the “performances” were merely 30-second clips of musicians performing for private parties. Those viewers excited to see the Foo Fighters perform their See VMAS page 14
