Three days later, Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), an outspoken supporter of gun control, launched a 15-hour filibuster on the senate floor, which was the first of several failed attempts to pass gun legislation in Congress this past June.

Meet the First Female Chief of UNH Police

racy Mooney stood excitedly as she returned to the school from which she had received her master’s degree. However, this time she stood in front of everyone, as she was sworn in, as the new police chief for the University of New Haven.

After tedious work narrowing down the applicants, Ronald M. Quagliani, the Associate Vice President of Public Safety & Administrative Services for U.N.H., was there to congratulate his longtime friend and new collogue to the UNH campus.

Quagliani, who helped in the hiring process, shared a few of the things the Board, which consists of someone from, Student Affairs, Human Recourses, a faculty member, and a Public Safety member, looks for.

“The job requirement, was you had to be a sworn law enforcement officer, with 15 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, had to have a bachelor’s degree, and you had to demonstrate that you have been successful in that that supervisory role,” he said.

The hiring process, which started in February, began with about 23 application candidates that are current supervisory law enforcement officers, the search committee narrowed down the candidates to six. Then they did a day on campus, which then narrowed it down to two candidates. Then a full background process is done, background check, fingerprinting, polygraph, psych exam, medical exam.

At the end of the day the offer was extended to Mooney.

“Her ability to have the passion to be with the students, with all groups of students, to have that priority to mentor and outreach is something that put her over the edge,” Mooney was sworn in

After attending Keene State College for a Bachelor degree in History, with a minor in Art History from Keene State, she got a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from our very own U.N.H. Mooney attended classes like any regular student, to pursue her masters in Criminal Justice.

“I wanted to get my degree in Criminal Justice as I was already lieutenant at Milford, I think it goes without saying that U.N.H. goes hand and hand with that educational process.”

She was also familiar with the U.N.H. community due to the fact that she was in charge of the police internships at Milford, but she grew fond of the U.N.H. students and faculty.

“I was very impressed with the students, and I worked a little with the faculty with police work, so it just seemed like the right fit.”

Mooney, who worked previously in Milford as the Police Chief, came out of retirement to join our U.N.H. community.

“The one position I knew if it became available that would pull me out of my retirement from policing was this, and so I retained my certification for two years after I retired, I retired at the end of

2014. So I was actually on vacation and a friend of mine texted me saying, U.N.H. police chief is posted. I was like oh boy, this may be life changing, and so I applied for the job and I got an interview and here I sit,” said Mooney with a proud and happy smile on her face.

Mooney started her process of becoming a police officer at the age of 28. She joined the Milford police department in 1994 and is now a 21-year veteran of the department. She joined the force because of her father, who was a firefighter and she grew up with shift work, public service life and grew to love it.

“Once an opportunity became available and I thought I was mature enough, because I think maturity is a big part of this position and profession. I started the processes because there is so much work that goes into it, it is incredibly for filling profession,” said Mooney.

In 1997, Mooney was chosen by the departments police chief to represent Milford as both an undercover and investigative officer at the South Central Office of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, which she stayed with for three and a half years, saying it was a very rewarding part of her career. She worked with police officers from all over the state, being undercover and writing search and ar-

rest warrants. In this time she also did 10 or 11 wiretaps.

During those three and a half years, she received two Unit Citations; one for the seizure of several kilos of cocaine, and the other was for her undercover work in a large-scale drug investigation.

When she returned to the Patrol Division in 2000 she worked hard and had to overcome the challenges of going from undercover narcotics work, back to the patrol duty.

“It was a transition period for sure, I was coming from strictly narcotics investigation were you are in plain clothes and driving regular cars, it really is a cool aspect of policing. And you’re coming back into a patrol unit; you’re back in uniform back to dealing with perhaps mundane police calls. So you just have to transition back into the patrol mentality,” Mooney said.

Then in 2002 she was promoted to sergeant and again in 2004 when she was promoted to lieutenant.

Mooney was then promoted again in 2007 to Administrative Captain, which included her heading the International Affairs Unit, which made her the Freedom of Information Officer. Being Administrative Captain also gave her other responsibilities such as, overseeing the Records and Traffic Divisions, coordinating the hiring of employees, as well as participating in and supervising the Recruitment Team.

In 2011, Mooney attended and graduated from the 246th Session of the FBI National Academy, Mooney states it was the best experience of her career. For 10 weeks in Quantico, VA, on the FBI academy grounds, she attended classes for master courses and physical fitness tests. The program expands to 250 police executives, (Lieutenants or higher) from all over the world, it is very hard to get into and Mooney’s Chief

––––––––––––––––––––– Four years ago, NBC was the first news outlet to announce that Barack Obama had been re-elected to serve as the President of the United States at approximately 11:12 at night. Who will it call it first this year?

The communication department at the University of New Haven is sponsoring an “Election Sock Off,” in light of the 2016 presidential election presenting students the opportunity to make their handpicked her for the Milford Department’s Chair, which comes around once every five years.

She was hand picked by the then Police Chief Keith Mello. Mello had recommend Mooney for the position of Deputy Chief after the retirement of former Deputy Chief Steven Fournier, who now is the assistant to Mayor Ben Blake.

In 2012, Mooney was sworn in as Milford’s Police Department’s second- highest-ranking officer, making her the highest-ranking female in the department’s history after being promoted from Captain to Deputy Chief in 2011 making her second in command for overseeing operational functions.

The University of New Haven prides itself on being one of the top schools for Criminal Justices, with that being said, many students strive in the competitive department. Mooney, not only being a veteran of the police force in many different areas but also a student of the University of New Haven, has first hand witnessed the students and them fulfilling their aspirations of studying Criminal Justice at this school.

“As an outsider, new to the university, Chief Mooney has brought a fresh new attitude and energy to the department. She is actively working on finding new ways to engage the officers in new duties and responsibilities on campus. I think she is doing a fine job at motivating the officers to better represent the university and its values,” Mroczka said.

There is no wonder why so many students look up to the school’s new police chief as their living breathing role model. Mooney had a few inspiring words on this topic: “I know that as a woman executive in policing that I serve as a mentor and a role model to people and that is very important.

So what has served me well to learn to move up in the ranks is, learn your craft, I think police officers need to continue to be students of the criminal justice system, they can’t just pigeonhole themselves.

They have got to know what is going on globally, what the issues are in law enforcement, because they have to honestly address them with their clientele.”

She also gave a few words of advice for those students: “Be good to people, care about the people

Now in October, Senator Murphy is working hard to pass commonsense gun legislation, along with electing a president who is looking to work for the same ideals. Murphy points out that the issue of gun safety only exists in Republican-controlled Washington.

A study from Quinnipiac University shows that 93% of Americans believe that every person who buys a gun should have a background check performed. The same study shows that 86% of Americans believe that people on the terror watch list should not be allowed to buy a gun. Murphy blames groups like the NRA for the gridlock in Congress over these issues.

“The gun lobby essen-

tially has a vice grip on the Republican Party in Washington,” Murphy added, “I don’t think they will be in power forever, but it’s going to take a lot of work to get these things passed.”

In his walk across Connecticut this past summer, Senator Murphy learned a lot about what the people really want from their government and the different investments that need to be made here in state.

“I came back from the walk feeling like it was more important than ever for Congress to start working on raising wages for workers,” he said.

Murphy believes in raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

He also thinks that the government needs to be making more investments in education, infrastructure, science, and technology. These ideas came from walking around Connecticut and realizing that citizens can not pay the bills, even when work-

Senator Murphy is also a strong advocate in climate change. He has made calls on Congress to adopt a new style of thinking when it comes to clean energy, as many Democrats are doing as well.

“It’s amazing to me how so many people in Congress are in denial of basic science,” he said.

Murphy blames the fossil fuel industry for filling the pockets and minds of his Republican counterparts, who refuse to stray from traditional methods and move towards clean energy. He also believes that this issue will tip in his favor eventually, after more convincing and hard work.

Murphy has endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in the upcoming election, and believes that under her leadership and a cooperative Congress, these hot-button issues can be swayed to favor the Democratic agenda.

When deadlines are set for us, it is important to stick to them, because although they may cause stress, the fallout afterward can be even worse if not completed.

For example, not submitting an assignment on time usually results with deducted points. Not handing in an application on time will result in not being considered for a job or internship.

Also, if you’re in an RSO on campus, you

are responsible to comply with the rerecognition process put together by CSELO and USGA. The deadline this year was September 30, and any club that didn’t complete the required procedures be that date would be suspended.

So, although it’s a lot of work and takes time to complete by the set deadline, the result is much worse.

Deadlines are Really, Really Important

––––––––––––––––––––– Whether you like it or not, deadlines are what make the world go ‘round. Deadlines are important for many reasons, but many people don’t know how deadlines can actually help with productivity, rather than cause stress and anxiety.

Deadlines have their pros and cons in any discipline, like business, creative, and even specifically for students.

As students, there are many things that we need to do on a deadline. Essays, tests, projects, applications, forms, etc. are all commonplace to run through our minds all day.

But, do we ever stop to wonder why these deadlines are so important and why they are labeled as so crucial to our success?

Deadlines can push you to accomplish a goal. As someone who procrastinates frequently, I realized that the closer I am to a

deadline, the harder I work to make sure the product is the best it can be. It can also help you think about what it will take to accomplish that goal and how much you will have to invest in a particular project.

Accomplishing goals on time also shows how you can work in a fastpaced environment and on a time table. Proving this skill can help in future jobs or internships in pleasing coworkers and supervisors.

Deadlines can also help prioritize the tasks you have to complete.

As college students, we obviously have a lot going on at one time.

Having that due date presented to you with an assignment will help you realize that you need to have this done before your midterm project, and help you budget your time to make sure you’re doing what you need to do when you need to do it.

Obviously, we can’t control when deadlines are set for us, which are usually the most important ones. But setting deadlines for yourself can help with produc-

oming off a week eight loss against the Assumption Greyhounds, and with just two games left on the docket, the New Haven Chargers went into week nine looking to make the most out of their second to last game of the season.

A game in which they would be facing the 3-5 American International Yellow Jackets.

Last week’s loss to the Greyhounds was a tough one for the Blue and Gold, as they went head to head with the number 16 ranked team in all of Division II football. The Chargers fought hard, but they just couldn’t keep up with Assumption’s offense, dropping the contest by a score of 38-24. The backfield duo of Ajee Patterson and Andre Anderson combined for 346 yards of offense and 3 touchdowns, one of them

Defensively, the Chargers were led by Tyler Condit and Junior defensive back Nigel Davis, who finished with 12 and 11 total tackles, respectively.

On the other side of the scorecard, the Yellow Jackets are coming off a loss to the number

The Jackets could only muster 7 points, as the team as a whole could only gain 51-yards rushing with their leading rusher being Sophomore running back Willie Brown IV with 30-yards. Quarterback Kwame Jarvis had a decent game, certainly not one to write home about as the redshirt

Speaking of the first score of the game, that would come on a short 3-yard Lemar Thomas touchdown run late in the first quarter.

After that score, the floodgates were opened; the Blue and Gold started their next drive with good field position at the AIC 45-yard line and proceeded to push it down field and eventually into the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown toss from Patterson to senior tight end Jesse Tate. The Chargers’ next score wouldn’t come on conventional terms, so to speak; their next score would come by way of a blocked AIC punt, blocked by Sophomore defensive lineman Markel Johnson, that would by returned 11-yards for a touchdown by Stefano Bicknese.

U.N.H. wouldn’t stop at a 21-0 lead, and it didn’t seem like the Jackets were doing a very good job at trying to stop them. Thomas would go on to score his second touchdown of the game, this time from 13 yards out.

Down 28-0 going into the half, two questions that definitely arose: “Can AIC stop U.N.H.?” and “Will AIC ever score their first points of the game?” Two questions that would be answered by the end of the contest.

Eventually the Chargers would be stopped, as neither team would reach pay dirt for the rest of the game. Yes, that means AIC never scored a single point; an upsetting outing for them on two fronts considering the fact that it was Senior Day and in their last three games, including this one, they managed to score all of 10 points.

The victorious Chargers were led offensively by Patterson, who threw for 144-yards and two touchdowns which heavily outweighed the one interception he threw. The rushing attack was led by Lemar Thomas and Freshman Ryan McCarthy as they combined for 134-yards on the ground, which outgained the Yellow Jackets by 100 yards.

Rishawn Harris led the receivers with 3 receptions for 55-yards and one of Patterson’s two touchdown tosses.

The defense was led Tyler Condit, who had a record breaking performance with his 11 tackles, his second of the game made him the All-Time leading tackler in Northeast-10 history and his tenth pushed him past Erik Lesinski to become the All-Time leading tackler in New Haven Charger history.

Next week the Chargers will close out their regular season with a home matchup against the Bentley Falcons as they will honor 20 seniors who will put on the blue and gold one last time on Senior Day.

The Real Slim Brady

ll Patriots fans can take a sigh of relief now that Tom Brady’s four game suspension is over and he can return to the field. He made his season debut in week five against the Browns; he threw for 406-yards and three touchdowns, and he hasn’t slowed down there. Since Brady returned the Patriots have beat the Browns, Bengals, and Steelers.

As much as Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett played well in Brady’s absence, leading the team to a 3-1 record, they just aren’t at Brady’s level.

Brady’s four game suspension was for his alleged involvement with the Deflategate.

The Patriots were

caught with deflated footballs in the AFC Championship against the Colts where the Patriots won 45-7. The league could not provide hard evidence that Tom Brady was responsible; but the league determined that if the footballs were underinflated than Brady would have had to know. The Patriots were fined a million dollars, forced to forfeit their first round pick of the 2016 draft and their fourthround pick of the 2017 draft, and Brady was suspended without pay for the first four games of the NFL season.

This suspension did not make Brady less effective, it just made Brady more dangerous to opposing teams.

Brady was drafted 199th overall (6th round) in the 2000 NFL Draft. Most sixth rounder’s do not become anything, but

That is exactly what he did, he got his shot in 2000, and 6 Super Bowl appearances later he is where he is today. Brady also prides himself by being the healthiest eater. Brady has never had a cup of coffee, and he also does not eat vegetables and very little fruit. He only eats organic food that has all positive effects on the human body.

I

t is hard to believe that AMC’s The Walking Dead has been around now for seven seasons. It seems like just yesterday that sheriff deputy Rick Grimes awoke from his coma to find a world infested by the living dead. Based off Robert Kirkman’s popular comic series, The Walking Dead takes obvious inspiration from George Romero’s Dead series.

Starting in 1968 with the black and white masterpiece Night of the Living Dead, Romero redefined the conventional zombie into the human flesh eating living dead ghouls that occupy the world of The Walking Dead.

Unlike other zombie films such as 28 Days Later or World War Z, The Walking Dead has always had a grounded approach where ev-

erything else, besides from the reanimation of the dead, is completely feasible.

Where the show and comics have really stood apart is the focus on the human story of surviving the apocalypse. While the zombies are there as an ever looming threat, the true drama and action comes from surviving a world where humans

are more dangerous than zombies.

Throughout the past six seasons, Rick has built a group of survivors who have become family in the new world.

The group is very dynamic, with great character arcs that last many seasons. Abused wife Carol has turned into one of the most deadly characters on the show. Skittish for-

Shaped by the brutality others inflict towards them, even Rick’s teenage son Carl has a couple of kills under his belt.

For those not on the internet in the past few weeks, The Walking Dead returned last Sunday night with the premiere of season seven.

Yet, this is no ordinary season premiere, as it is the follow up to one of the biggest cliffhangers in television history.

Last season, Rick and company found refuge in the walled in community of Alexandria.

After surviving an invasion of thousands of zombies in which many died, the group has to scavenge outside of Alexandria to find enough resources to survive.

In doing so, they find another community-the Hilltop. Rick’s group makes a deal with the

Far more graphic than Ford’s death, Glenn getting his head beaten in reaffirms that no one is safe in The Walking Dead. This is also one of the goriest deaths seen yet, with the initial blow to Glenn’s head popping one eyeball out and creating a huge fracture in his skull.

Hearing Glenn sputter as his brain is protruding, Negan instantly becomes a far more vicious and dangerous adversary than the Governor ever was.

Besides from that, the season premiere does not have much to it.

While the two deaths are very impactful, there is little to advance the story other than establishing that Negan is going to be a hard threat for the group to overcome. We have not seen Rick subject himself to anyone else’s authority yet, so seeing him get ordered around like a dog by Negan and Rick following is disconcerting to say the least. The rest of the season is sure to focus on the attempt to overthrow Negan and the Saviors, and there is certainly going to be a body count when that day comes.

The premiere episode was titled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”. This is a recall to the finale of season one.

Rick’s group at that time found themselves taking shelter inside of the CDC, where only one doctor remained. With the power drained, the CDC was rigged to explode with everyone inside. The remaining doctor, Jenner, was content dying in an explosion as the world around them had become a living nightmare.

After pleading to give them a shot in the outside world, Jenner opens the doors of the complex for Rick’s group to escape. Rick tells Jenner he is grateful for the chance to survive, to which Jenner says “the day will come when you won’t be”.

Vanessa Tello is Sig Suit Champion

igma Chi crowned their new Sig Suit Champion during their annual Sig Suit held on Thursday, October 27 in the German Club to raise money for their philanthropy, the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

To start off the event, the brothers showed a video about their philanthropy to the audience. The Huntsman Cancer Foundation is Sigma Chi’s designated sole preferred philanthropic partner. In The institute praises Sigma Chi chapters claiming they are the generation to end cancer. The institute has made tremendous progress due to the time, money, and resources used to make a difference. The creative and innovative minds entering the professional world should be the last generation to fight this disease. Sigma Chi wants to fund cancer research and believes in their brothers and their abilities to make a difference.

Sig Suit is a pageant where the brothers invite females to raise money for their cause and compete in various rounds in hopes of being named the next Sig Suit Champion.

The first round of the competition was dancing, and all of the contestants were escorted out by a brother from the fraternity and did a themed dance. Beach wear was the second round, and the contestants wore different swim and beach day themed outfits along with their escort.

Halfway through the competition, there was a performance by the 5,6,7,8 Dance Team.

Gabby Palmeri, Sargent at Arms for the club, said “This was our first performance of the semester. A lot of us have been affected by cancer personally, so it means a lot for us to participate in this amazing event and to help out anyway that we can.”

This video was the Five for the Fight Campaign, which shows how five dollars can help cure cancer.

The audience was asked to stand if they know someone who has been affected by cancer.

Then they were asked to write the name that

person on their hand, and raise it in the air.

With all hands raised was very moving and showed awareness about how cancer affects so many people.

The results for the competition were presented afterwards with all the contestants and their escorts on the stage. For most money raised, Sam Carlisto was the winner. For most creative, Shaye Deveau was the winner.

––––––––––––––––––––– On Saturday, October 29 the Alumni Lounge was transformed into a thrilling maze filled with freights and screams of the Zombie Apocalypse presented

by S.C.O.P.E. for their annual haunted house.

When students entered, they were greeted by one of the actors asking for their help.

Walking through the dark maze there were lots of jump scares, loud noises, gory scenes, strobe lights, and zombie encounters.

After students survived the apocalypse, they were invited upstairs to the Moulton Lounge for refreshments and crafts - craft tables consisted of a make-your-own pumpkin basket, or Halloween lanyard.

Lamda Pi Upsilon’s Pumpkin Fest

––––––––––––––––––––– Hosted by Lambda Pi Upsilon sorority, this year’s Pumpkin Fest fell on National Pumpkin Day. Although it was a total coincidence, they the spirit through the haunted house by participating as zombies.

The Spirit and Tradition Committee Heads, Amanda Santamaria and Sean Callahan were happy with the success of this year’s event.

“I feel like this event made us grow as people because it was our first big event. It took a lot of team effort and months of planning with the theme and how to incorporate it into the maze,” Santamaria

said.

“It was more unique and interactive than years past, and people really seem to like it,” Callahan added.

All of S.C.O.P.E.’s events are free, and the haunted house is one of their biggest events in the fall. They built the entire maze themselves, constructing the walls and decorating them.

BSU Creates Pumpkin Fest Painted Glass for Unity cont. from pg. 11

his Twisted Thursday’s event was glass painting and hosted by the Black Student Union. The Black Student Union (BSU) aims to promote awareness of the African American culture on campus but they also do social events to unite the campus. Some major events include Save a Breast, Sankofa Benefit Concert and Sankofa Ball.

At Thursday’s event there were various glass cups and jars people could choose from to paint. Cups ranged from shot glasses, to jars, to regular multisized cups. Paint pens were also provided.

Sarah Bosco said, “I liked this event because it let me be creative and relax.”

BSU likes to host events like this because they feel a lot of students are turned off by their name. They try and do social events that the whole campus will come out to and enjoy. The event was picked by the president, Mackenzie Upshaw who felt college students needed glassware for

their dorms and this way they were able to make it theirs by adding their own touch, style and personality to it.

The turnout for this Twisted Thursday’s event was huge. Every seat at the giant table was filled. The room was filled with creativity and bursting with colors on the glass.

Students from every background enjoyed the creativity and friendly atmosphere.

“This event was a good way to unwind,” says Rebecca Wallace.

Dylan Dalessio agreed saying, “It was something fun to do, I really liked it.”

Save a Breast is hosted by BSU, but also is co-sponsored by 25 other campus organizations. The event happened this past weekend. In February to celebrate Black History Month they do events every day of the month.

One of the most popular events they host is the Sankofa Benefit Concert.

––––––––––––––––––––– Paranormal Awareness Week (PAW) kicked off with the annual Harvest Fest on Sunday, October 30th.

The Harvest Fest was hosted by PIRO (Paranormal Investigation Research Organization), and was held in Westside 112.

There were many Halloween themed games with prizes to win. The games included witch hat ring toss, skull and pumpkin bean bag tosses, Halloween themed tic-tac-toe, pin the eye on the monster, twister, cupcake and donut eating contests and skeleton hide and seek. The

donut eating contest required contestants to eat donuts attached to string without using their hands. The skeleton hide and seek consisted of players finding the hidden bones of the skeleton through the Westside lobby.

Winners of each game would receive a raffle ticket to put in for a chance to win a Halloween themed basket.

There was also face paintings, which included pumpkins, ghosts, spiders and bats.

Paranormal Awareness Week’s events include a guest speaker, a costume ball, game night, and divination fair. On Halloween Monday in the Alumni lounge was the costume

Wednesday November 2 from 10-11pm will be game night, and on the last day of PAW, in Echlin 209 from 8-10:30pm, is the Divination fair. At the fair there will be tarot readings, and much more!

PAW has been going since 2002-03 when PIRO was first founded at U.N.H.. They have kept the events mostly the same due to their success. Typically on Wednesday, rather than game night, the event is ghost stories, but they decided to shake it up this year. They also

normally go on a trip to Salem, which they are planning for later in the year.

There are around 120 total members in PIRO, with many new members just this year.

PIRO hosts multiple big events throughout the year including the masquerade ball in the spring, paranormal jeopardy, and May Day, which celebrates Beltane, the pagan celebration of the spring.
