Mantis Shrimp A mantis shrimp is neither a mantis nor a shrimp; however, their physical features resemble that of both species.

They can reach a length of up to 38 centimeters and they may exhibit multiple colors from brown to bright neon hues. They are common predators found in the shallow waters of the tropical and subtropical marine habitats, and they reside mostly in burrows and holes. The mantis shrimp are currently referred to as thumb splitters due to the fact that they are able to dismember small human appendages with ease. With their powerful claws, they are able to stun, mutilate, or spear their prey. In some rare cases, larger species of mantis shrimp are capable of breaking through aquarium glass with a single strike.

Cinco de Mayo, of the fifth of May, commemorated the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the French-Mexican War. In the United States, it has taken on significance and commercial value as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with substantial MexicanAmerican populations.

In 1861, the liberal Mexican Benito Juárez became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew but France, ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large

Certain that French victory would come swiftly, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in eastcentral Mexico. From his new headquarters in the north, Juárez rounded up a rag-tag force of 2,000 loyal men and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza, the vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans fortified the town and p r e pared for the French assault.

On May 5, 1862, L o r encez drew his army, well-provisioned and supported by heavy artillery, before the city of Puebla and began their assault from the north. The battle lasted

from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers to the fewer than 100 Mexicans killed.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely triumph occurred. In the United States, revelers mark the holiday with parades, parties, mariachi music. Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano are eaten. Some of the largest festivals are held in Portland, Denver and Chicago.

USGA President’s Corner Fellow UNH students, I would like to send a huge congratulations to all of the members of SCOPE for planning a wonderful spring weekend! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! Great job to everyone who had a part in making this weekend such a success, it couldn’t have been done without you.

SCOPE it Out

I hope you all enjoyed spring weekend! This week I need to start by thanking a few people! THANK YOU to all of the volunteers out there who helped out with the spring concert, spring carnival, and the drive-in movie! This was such a busy weekend for SCOPE and we really appreciated all the help; we could not have pulled off any of it without you so thanks again for all your help. The concert went really well; we even sold out! Everyone seemed to have a great time and it was awesome when, during the last Cobra Starship song, we were able to have our confetti cannon fire! So much planning went on for the concert and it was great to see it run so smoothly.

Hats off to Jen Cross and Rachel Nichols for planning such an amazing carnival! This year there was no elephant, but it was still fantastic! They brought bumper cars, swings, many other carnival rides, gave out awesome t-shirts for free, two great stage shows, roaming artists, novelties, and had fantastic giveaways, not to mention it was a beautiful day! Between the sunshine, the rides, and the yummy food it really got me excited for spring and summer weather.

The spring comedian was also a huge hit! If you see Farren Sandquist or Annie Luccarelli please thank them for such an awesome night! They sure know how to pick a funny comedian.

We were actually able to have a drive-in this spring weekend. Can you believe it? The past two spring weekends it has rained and we had to move inside, which definitely takes away from the drive-in feel. Nick Shirley picked an awesome movie, The Book of Eli, and despite some technical problems at the start, the drive-in was fantastic! The quad was full of glow sticks, blankets, and towels from the comedian.

SCOPE also finished out the year with a few other events after spring weekend. On Monday, comedy and lecture had the real live hitch, the Dating Doctor, which was a great event. On the last day of classes, the day programming committee planned the relaxation package, which is always a big hit! You could get a massage, eat yummy treats, decorate a bath robe, and more!

Overall it was a great year and I am happy I was co-chair. I had the opportunity to work with some really great people and it was a great experience. This year was amazing and I think Glenn would agree with me: our committee heads did a great job so a special thanks to ALL of them.

There is also another group of people I would like to personally thank, and that is all of our general members! They are all so amazing and they are truly the people that help to make our events successful, without them we would not get half of what we accomplish done!

I really can’t believe that this is my last SCOPE It Out article. Ever since I started this little column this year it’s just been something that I have looked forward to writing every week so everyone was up to date with upcoming SCOPE events. With all that said, I do have faith that our future co-chairs for next year will take this on and continue SCOPE It Out in The Charger Bulletin. Thanks so much everyone, it was a great year! HAVE A FANTASTIC AND SAFE SUMMER!

First Full Face Transplant May Drive-In Movie a Lead to New Market for Surgeons Huge Success!

The annual drive-in movie for spring weekend was The Book of Eli. The movie was about life after the nuclear war and provided great entertainment for those sitting on blankets across the quad. Eli, played by Denzel Washington, has been walking across the United States to the west because a voice inside his head told him to.

Along the way, Eli meets Solara and they end up

making it all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Along the way they run into tons of trouble at every turn. The movie was full of action and surprising moments.

The drive-in got off to a rocky start with some technique difficulties, but after those were fixed the movie went off without a hitch!

Also, before the movie, the first 150 or so people got a keepsake blanket and a giveaway ticket. The giveaway prizes included t-shirts and footballs from the bookstore. Overall the night was a great night!

Government Gets Involved with Video Game Market

of the law would face fines of up to $1000. Initially, the bill was rejected by a California federal court because it conflicted with the constitutional concept of free speech, resulting in awarding the Entertainment Software Association $282,000 in legal fees.

Now, the clash between Arnold Schwarzenegger, his California backing, and the gaming industry is drawing national upset for the regulation of violent video games, a topic that’s been steadily receiving intense scrutiny over the years.

According to California definition, interactive games are those in which the player is given the choice of “killing, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being” in offensive ways. The bill examined “ultra-violent games” whose violence causes them to “lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors” as well as those whose violence “is espe-

cially heinous, cruel, or depraved in that it involves torture or serious physical abuse to the victim,” said California assemblyman Leland Yee. Such games have been at the center of controversy, begging the question of whether the state or parents should be the ones to regulate what their children play.

Parents have raised the issue of psychological damage to children that may generate aggression, isolation, and an inability to distinguish fantasy from reality. In fact, there have been complaints about the effect that graphic depictions in video games have on children’s behavior.

“We have a responsibility to our kids and our communities to protect against the effects of games that depict ultra-violent actions, just as we already do with movies,” governor Schwarzenegger proclaims.

The game Rapelay allows players to rape women, impregnate them, and even persuade them to abort pregnancies. Manhunt all o w s players to use explicit and brutal violence to kill enemies and as the levels increase, the meth-

ods to execute enemies get more gruesome and extreme. Condemned 2: Bloodshot, a psychological horror game, depicts a swearing alcoholic investigator who uses graphic violence in a crime-infested world. Dante’s Inferno includes players slashing possessed babies. And in Gears of War, players can use a chainsaw bayonet to chop enemies in half. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 consists of a level where players watch terrorists slaughter civilians at an airport by shooting them in the back of the head. Despite these complaints, the game industry says: “Sex, unlike violence, is a subject uniquely considered to be outside children’s purview. Violence, on the other hand, is a regular part of children’s literature and stories…as anyone familiar with the classic fairy tales are aware.”

In response to the recent appeal, ESA president and CEO Michael D. Gallagher says: “What the state proposes in this case would effect a sea change in the permissible regulation of all media—including books, movies, and television programs—that contain violent content and are accessible to minors.

We have the opportunity to make our case again and hopefully put this issue to rest.”

Plastic surgery addiction is already a problem that Americans face in today’s competitive society. The Associated Press reported that unlike operations involving vital organs like hearts and livers, transplants of faces or hands are done to improve quality of life, not extend it. They make a good point.

Where would we draw the line? How could we separate those seeking

out transplanted organs to “improve their quality of life” and those who see transplants, like plastic surgery, as a trend? What about those who claim to have psychological problems who blame their appearance for those problems?

Would Britney Spears be entitled to a hair transplant on the same level as a child with cancer who will never be able to grow hair again?

This is the reality we may be stepping into. With great power comes great responsibility, and we should make sure early on that we put that responsibility in the right hands.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.

This is the 104th issue that I have written in and worked on for The Charger Bulletin. My, how time flies by!

Throughout the past four years, I have written about all sorts of things – both positive and negative. I’ve talked about everything from Joe Lieberman and Barack Obama to mothers who are unable to control their children in Martin Scorcese movies.

Yup, I’ve covered it all.

One of my favorites was, by far, an editorial about warning labels. It went over hair driers that had the warning “do not use

If anyone had told me four years ago that I would be sitting here, in the office of The Charger Bulletin, writing my last editorial as assistant editor, I probably would have laughed. Not because I didn’t think I would ever be here: I have wanted to be assistant editor since the moment I first wrote an article for The Charger Bulletin about college campus suicides (yep, I still remember).

No, I would laugh because I never thought this day would actually come: the day we, as seniors, say goodbye to UNH for the last time.

Welcome to the last week of classes! By the

end of my junior year, I applied for editor-in-chief.

As you can probably tell, I was fortunate enough to receive that position as well.

I have no idea what I will be doing a year from now. But whatever it is, I know that I’ll be involved.

The sad part, however, is seeing how many people don’t get involved. By no means should everybody – nor would everybody – want to be in charge of a university organization.

But how can you really not get involved in even one club? UNH offers a ton of clubs and organizations, and certainly more than one can work for everybody. Whatever…to each their own!

It has been a pleasure

working on The Charger Bulletin for the past four years, and having a leadership position for three of those four. I have met and worked with some of the best people, and that’s something that I couldn’t be happier about. As I depart from this position, please join me in welcoming next year’s editor-inchief, Matt Di Giovanni. I feel like a mother sending his child off to preschool for the first time! (Yes, “mother” and “his.” That’s right!)

But in all seriousness, it has been an honor and a pleasure to do all that I have done. Thank you for reading the past few years, and thank you for not smoking! ... even those who read while smoking ...

would be the best days of our lives. I agree in some ways: my time at UNH has been the best I could ever ask for.

But, after May 16, I do not see my life suddenly sliding downhill. The friends I have made (some of the best I could ever ask for), the moments I have had, the things I have learned, and the mistakes I have made will forever affect the rest of my life.

While I won’t be here next year (Drexel University, here I come!) I know the experiences I have had

here, both in this office and out, will be ones I will carry with me.

So, in closing, I guess I have some people to thank. To my roommates, closest friends, and the

girls of the 5-6-7-8 Dance team; I wish you the best next year. Matt Digiovanni, don’t sweat it: you will do FANTASTIC next year.

We have such faith in you.

I thank The Chariot Yearbook for being the best office mates we could ever ask for. To all of the professors, faculty, and staff that have made this year fantastic: thank you for always believing in me and The Charger Bulletin. Oh yeah…and Zack. Thanks for always sharing my desk, the laughs, the hard times, and everything else that came with this position. But I’ll be real…I’m a little glad to not be the office b*tch anymore :-p.

I’m about 95 percent sure that every professor I’ve taken a class with has mentioned that they take all of his or her evaluations seriously, yet only a handful have actually provided proof of this through improvements.

Additionally, when I hear

the number of complaints centered on a specific list of professors, I wonder how they are still teaching here if that many students are dissatisfied.

I have never regretted attending UNH, and in most student complaints, I’ll be honest, I side with the university, however; when actual hardworking students struggle and suffer despite great work, I say to myself, “what the hell UNH?” I would like to close

My personal favorite was a printed message appears in a TV ad when the presenter demonstrates how strong some Ingenio cookware is by using it to beat up a regular frying pan. “Using Ingenio cookware to destroy your

old pots may void y o u r w a r r a n t y. ” Okay, one last one…on a packet for a moist t o w elette, a message was printed that stated that it “cleans and refreshes without soap or water. Contains: Water, fragrance & soap.”

To be honest, there’s nothing I would have rather done at the University of New Haven than

get involved. The summer before my freshman year, around June, I contacted the station manager of WNHU and the editor-inchief of The Charger Bulletin. I became active in both organizations, and at the end of my freshman year I knew that I wanted to do more … but which should I invest myself in!?

Being a rather naive individual, I applied for positions within The Charger Bulletin as well as WNHU. The night of my interview, I received a call that I couldn’t have been happier about – I was appointed the assistant editor of The Charger Bulletin. At the end of my sophomore year, I reapplied for the assistant editor position, and got it again. Then, at the

time you all read this, we seniors will be sitting in our last classes of our academic undergraduate careers. For me, it’ll be Dr. Saliby’s Advanced Inorganic: sounds ridiculous, I know, but it will probably be an incredibly sad moment. Dr. Saliby, like Professor Palmbach, has been one of my biggest mentors here at UNH…and one of the professors I will miss the most.

As seniors, we have seen an incredible amount of change, across campus since 2006. From an intense increase in freshmen, to the creation of the Rec Center, to the loss of the Bixler parking lot, our home-away-from-home has changed right before our eyes. I can’t say I regret a moment of that

change: it has led to phenomenal moments and unbelievable memories.

Like Zack, I wouldn’t be where I am today without being involved. I have spent a large majority of my time the last four years being involved on campus, from this office to forensic science trips and from ALD to USGA. I can’t imagine my time here being any different: the crazy, haphazard, nosleep-lifestyle of being an involved senior has been fantastic, despite what you may think. For those of you not graduating, take the note from both of us: get involved on campus! It is the ONLY way to have a good time and really enjoy the college experience.

In my freshman year, I took predominantly entrylevel classes as one would expect; however both semesters I ended up taking classes where at one point or another I ended up feeling very apathetic, because no matter the effort I put in to the class, my results were the same. I am by no means a perfect student, but I know when I deserve better.

This brings me to my major point. If UNH is truly concerned with freshman retention rates, why not solve one of the major problems: incompetent professors. While that may sound harsh, what could turn off a student (and his or her parents) more than poor academic programs?

I’m never one to complain about the price of attending UNH, but if a student’s schedule has one or two poor professors per semester in his or her first year,

In the corner of the street where the blue and white bus passes every 15 minutes, sits a fuzzy faced man who to only I, appears as a human sculpture, carved by the hands of the city- from every unique brick inside the structure of a house, from every cemented square shaped in each sidewalk, from every crooked crack created inside the road pavements, and from every colorful squeak and shout within the metal gates of a public park.

This living statue, this breathing, Thinking Manbut one with the cold curb, connected to his environment, his creator. He sits motionless with eyes of stone, a galaxy in his pupils- each star a story. Un-

distracted is he by the rushing world, with no reliance on busy music or the aid of any speed flashing technology. Next to the stop sign his brain pulses, the thoughts pumped through his mind no longer within our grasp.

What does he think of? I wonder. Family, finances, lovers, the economy…? Thoughts forever forgotten through time in thought? Yet, without understanding, I find comfort in his position; and without any knowledge on this scruffy individual, I relateI know.

Meanwhile, Hayward said chemical dispersants seem to be having a significant impact keeping oil from flowing to the surface, though he did not elaborate.

The update on the dispersants came as BP was preparing a system never tried to siphon away the spill of crude from a blown-out well a mile underwater. However, it will take at least another six to eight days before crews can lower 74-ton concreteand-metal boxes being built to capture the oil and siphon it to a barge waiting at the surface.

That delay could allow at least another million gallons to spill into the Gulf, on top of the roughly 2.6 million or more that has spilled since the April 20 blast. Those numbers are

Gulf Coast Oil Spill to Cost Millions based on the Coast Guard’s estimates that 200,000 gallons a day are spilling out, though officials have cautioned it’s impossible to know exactly how much is leaking.

By comparison, the tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons off the Alaska coast in 1989.

Crews continued to lay boom in what increasingly felt like a futile effort to keep the spill from reaching the shore, though choppy seas have made that difficult and rendered much of the oil-corraling gear useless.

In Pensacola, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist characterized the spill as “sort of an underground volcano of oil.” He said Monday that BP was responsible for the cleanup and added “we’ll be more than happy to send them the bill.”

Everything engineers have tried so far has failed to stop the leak. After the explosion, the flow of oil should have been stopped by a blowout preventer, but the mechanism failed.

Efforts to remotely activate it have proven fruitless.

The oil could keep gushing for months until a second well can be dug to relieve pressure from the first.

Besides the immediate impact on Gulf industries, shipping along the Mississippi River could soon be limited because the slick was precariously close to a key shipping lane. Ships carrying food, oil, rubber and much more come through the Southwest Pass to enter the vital waterway.

Shipment delays — either because oil-splattered ships need to be cleaned off at sea before docking or because water lanes are shut down for a time — would raise the cost of transporting those goods.

“We saw that during Hurricane Katrina for a period of time — we saw some prices go up for food and other goods because they couldn’t move some fruit down the shipping channels and it got spoiled,” PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn said.

The Port of New Orleans said projections suggest the pass will be clear through Tuesday.

Obama toured the region Sunday, deflecting criticism that his administration was too slow to respond and did too little to stave off the catastrophe.

The administration has also strongly defended any comparison to the slow response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A piece of plywood along a Louisiana highway had these words painted on it: “OBAMA SEND HELP” The containment boxes being built were not part of BP’s original response plan. The approach has been used previously only for spills in relatively shallow water. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said engineers are still examining whether the valves and other systems that feed oil to a ship on the surface can withstand the extra pressures of the deep.

BP was trying to cap the smallest of three leaks with underwater robots in the hope it will make it easier to place a single oilsiphoning container over the wreck. One of the robots cut the damaged end off a pipe at the smallest leak Sunday and officials were hoping to cap it with a sleeve and valve, Coast Guard spokesman Brandon Blackwell said Monday. He did not know how much oil was coming from that leak.

“We see this as an opportunity to simplify the seafloor mission a little bit, so we’re working this aggressively,” BP spokesman Steve Rinehart said.

not authorized to discuss the volume of reserves, confirmed reports that tens of millions of barrels of oil were beneath the seabed being tapped by the rig when it blew up. Bob Fryar, senior vice president for BP in Angola, said any numbers being thrown out are just estimates at best.

On Sunday, fishermen from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle got the news that more than 6,800 square miles of federal fishing areas were closed, fracturing their livelihood for at least 10 days and likely more just as the prime spring season was kicking in.

Peter Young has worked nearly 18 years as a fishing guide and said he’s afraid his way of life may be slipping away. The government has overreacted by shutting down vital fishing areas in the marshes, he said.

Until he sees oil himself, Young will keep fishing the closed areas.

“They can take me to jail,” he said. “This is our livelihood. I’m not going to take customers into oil, but until I see it, I can’t sit home and not work.”

riverfront, and restaurants and bars in the warehouse district were closed. A few blocks away, the historic Ryman Auditorium, longtime former home of the Grand Ole Opry, was in no immediate danger.

"It's shocking to see it this way, but it was an incredible storm," Mayor Karl Dean said as he surveyed the downtown flooding. The Cumberland River was expected to crest Monday afternoon at more than 11 feet above flood stage, and officials worried they may find more bodies in the rising floodwaters.

Thousands of people took refuge in emergency shelters, including about 1,500 guests at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center who spent the night at a high school to escape the flooding.

The resort's hotel, located northeast of downtown along the river, had "significant water" inside and would remain closed indefinitely, said hotel spokeswoman Kim Keelor. A life-sized Elvis statue, missing his guitar, was laying on its back in the parking lot of the Wax Museum of the Stars near Opryland Hotel.

German tourists Gerdi and Kurt Bauerle, both 70, said resort staff suddenly started rushing people out

of the area Sunday night.

"We had just finished eating and suddenly they said: 'Go! Go! Go!'" said Gerdi Bauerle, who was visiting from Munich.

"And we said 'Wait, we haven't even paid.'"

"The water began rising much more rapidly than anyone predicted," Keelor said.

Water flooded parking lots around the nearby Grand Ole Opry House and the Opry Mills shopping mall, but it wasn't immediately clear if water had made it inside the buildings.

Lucy Owens, 46, said she had followed directions to stay inside with her 21-year-old son at their home near Opryland when she heard on the TV that her neighborhood was being evacuated Sunday night. She and her son tried to escape in her truck, but she couldn't even make it to her mailbox because the water was so high that it started flooding the truck's cab.

She said she screamed for help and a police officer came and took her and son to a point where a boat could rescue them.

By then, water was up to her ribcage.

"I got no notice. No one said nothing about evacuating. I did what they said and stayed put. I didn't get out. I didn't drive. Then it

just all happened so fast," she said.

Floodwaters swallowed up hundreds of homes including 45-year-old Lisa Blackmon's in the suburb of Bellevue on the west side of Nashville. Water was up to her knees inside her house when a neighbor rushed her out Sunday morning. "I got me, the dog, the car out and that's all I got," she said on Monday.

Blackmon said she feared she had nothing left in her home. She said she had no flood insurance and lost her job at a trucking company last December.

Across from downtown on the east side of the river, LP Field, where the Tennessee Titans play also was threatened. Water covered one parking lot near the river but had not reached the stadium on Monday afternoon. At the Wild Horse Saloon, a popular country music hangout on the downtown riverfront, there was water in the loading dock area and the bottom floor.

The Cumberland flooded quickly after the weekend's storms dumped more than 13 inches of rain in Nashville over two days.

That nearly doubled the previous record of 6.68 inches of rain that fell in the wake of Hurricane Fredrick in 1979.

The storms, which

also spawned deadly tornadoes, killed at least 12 people in Tennessee — including one person killed by a tornado in the western part of the state — six in Mississippi and four in Kentucky.

Three of the people killed in Mississippi died when high winds believed to be tornados hit their homes; the other three were killed in what authorities said were weather-related traffic accidents.

Four weather-related deaths were also reported in Kentucky, including one man whose truck ran off the road and into a flooded creek.

The weekend deaths came on the heels of a tornado in Arkansas that killed a woman and injured about two dozen people Friday. A week ago, 10 people were killed by a tornado from a separate storm in western Mississippi.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen got a bird's eye view of the flooding damage during a helicopter tour of the area on Monday. As he crossed the Tennessee River and neared the hardhit area of Madison County, flood waters were so deep that the tops of trees made the land looked like islands.

Nashville Braces for More Flooding as River Swells

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville braced for more deaths Monday as the flooded Cumberland River continued to swell, sending muddy water rushing through neighborhoods and into parts of the historic heart of Music City after a destructive line of weekend storms killed 22 people in Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky.

The flash floods caught Nashville off-guard, and thousands of residents and tourists were forced to flee homes and hotels as the river that winds through the city rapidly spilled over its banks. Eleven of the 12 people killed in Tennessee drowned, including six in Nashville.

Using motor boats, jet skis and canoes, authorities and volunteers rescued scores of residents trapped in flooded homes, some which looked like islands surround by dark brown river water. Helicopters plucked stranded residents off of rooftops.

The downtown — home of a historic warehouse district that dates back to the 1800s and is now occupied by bars and restaurants — was nearly deserted after authorities evacuated the area. Floodwater spilled into some streets near the

flood control project was put in place. With so much water inundating its tributaries, it was difficult to gauge whether the river would stop at 50 feet deep, or 11 feet above flood stage.

Much of the damage from flooding was done in outlying areas of Nashville and across the middle and western parts of Tennessee. Rescues turned dramatic over the weekend with homeowners plucked off roofs and pregnant women airlifted off a waterlogged interstate.

The rain ended Monday but there will likely be weeks of cleanup. Though there was no official estimate, it was clear thousands of homes had been damaged or destroyed by flooding and tornados.

Emily Petro, with the Red Cross in Nashville, said the agency was sheltering about 2,000 people across Tennessee — about 1,200 of them in Nashville.

Most schools in middle Tennessee were closed Monday and many universities in the Nashville area postponed final exams.

The state's roads also were in bad shape. The three major interstates in the Nashville area were closed over the weekend and Interstate 40, which runs east to west through the state, reopened Monday.

Summer Movies!!!

Now that spring weekend is behind us, the next exciting thing to look forward to is all the summer movies once we go home and fear eternal boredom until we return to UNH! So in the meantime, here are the upcoming summer movies to carry us over until then.

Eclipse: (Twilight saga) Most of you Twilight junkies know the back story to the series, but in this next movie installment of the books, Bella must decide between Jacob and Edward.

Iron Man 2: This is the typical American superhero film based on the Marvel comics. It’s the sequel to 2008's Iron Man and the second film in a planned trilogy. Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie revolves around Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who has revealed his identity as Iron Man and resists calls by the U.S. government to hand over the technology.

Letters to Juliet: For those looking for a good old love story, look no further. This is a tale of encountering new flings and rekindling old flames.

When Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), an American adolescent, travels to Verona, Italy (where Romeo first met Juliet) she meets a group of people who respond to letters written to Juliet seeking love advice.

Sophie responds to a letter that has been lost for over

Before his toys can be moved to the attic, they are unintentionally thrown away and are taken away by the garbage men.

The toys end up at a local day-care center where they must try to survive preschool children.

The A-Team: This summer movie tells the tale of the electrifying and daring misuse of Hannibal Smith and his vivid team of former Special Forces soldiers who were blamed for a crime they didn’t commit. By going "rogue" they use their unique abilities (and eccentricities) to attempt to clear their names and find the true perpetrator.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan protecting the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it single-handedly, so he utilizes Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly ordinary guy who exhibits hidden potential, as his unwilling protégé.

The sorcerer gives his reluctant accomplice a heads up in the art and science of magic. Together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the audacity Dave can muster to survive training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Auto research website Edmunds.com says incentives fell an average of 5 percent in April as the luster wore off some of the deals and automakers tried to pull back on spending. But there were still were good bargains.

Honda Motor Co. spent a record $1,787 per vehicle, while Toyota spent $2,498, down $245 from recordhigh levels in March. GM spent $3,273 per vehicle, although that was skewed by high incentives on the brands it is discontinuing.

GM said it spent $100 less per vehicle in April than in March.

"We'll be judicious with our incentives," said Steve Carlisle, GM's new vice president of sales. "We'll be competitive but not foolish."

Toyota used incentives to continue to spur demand as it distanced itself from safety recalls involving unintended acceleration. But sales slowed 16 percent compared with a strong March.

The Japanese automaker said its April sales were propelled by some of the vehicles involved in previous recalls like the Corolla compact, Prius hybrid and

RAV4 small crossover.

Honda's sales, including the Honda and Acura brands, rose 12.5 percent over April of last year.

Nissan Motor Co.'s April sales rose 34 percent, led by higher demand for the Rogue crossover, the Altima sedan and the newly released Cube hatchback. Crossovers are SUVs built on sedan bodies and combine elements of both vehicles.

Chrysler reported its first double-digit sales gain in nearly five years, led by a minivan promotion that drove sales up 68 percent. It saw sales surge for its Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger midsize sedans.

But its Ram pickup truck sales dropped a troubling 20 percent, even as main competitors GM and Ford reported rising pickup sales.

Chrysler's sales bucked industry trends and rose 3 percent over a March.

GM, after taking out brands that GM is phasing out or selling, GM sales rose 20 percent from April of last year. GM's four remaining brands are Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac.

DETROIT – The U.S. auto industry stayed on the road to recovery in April, but it eased up on the gas pedal a bit.

Ford Motor Co. saw last month's sales rise 25 percent from a year earlier, while General Motors Co. climbed 6.4 percent. Sales for Toyota Motor Corp., which has grappled with a string of safety recalls, rose 24 percent.

Even Chrysler, which has struggled much of the year, reported a 25 percent sales increase, while Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Subaru and others also continued to see gains.

But the industry overall likely won't be able to maintain the pace seen in March, when big sales promotions led by Toyota fueled higher sales. The Japanese automaker needed to lure buyers after suffering a series of safety recalls beginning last fall.

As buyers' expectations for even better deals grew, demand last month slipped from March and some automakers eased up on promotions.

NYPD Interviews Registered Owner of Car Bomb SUV

NEW YORK – Investigators have spoken to the registered owner of a sport utility vehicle that contained a homemade bomb in the failed Times Square terrorist attack, but he is not considered a suspect, officials said Monday.

The car was registered in Connecticut, where the owner on record was questioned Sunday night about what happened to the SUV since it was in his possession, according to law enforcement officials, who both spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is at a sensitive stage.

The man was not considered a suspect, but the officials declined to say why, or to discuss any leads stemming from the interview.

Paul Browne, the NYPD's deputy commissioner for public information, would not give further details on the registered owner but said officials were still looking for the driver.

The vehicle identification number on the 1993 dark-colored Nissan Pathfinder had been removed from the dashboard, but it was stamped on the engine and axle. Its license plates came from a car found in a Connecticut repair shop.

Investigators were also looking Monday to speak with a man in his 40s videotaped shedding his shirt near the sport utility vehicle where the bomb was found.

The surveillance video, made public late Sunday, shows the man slipping down Shubert Alley and taking off his shirt, revealing another underneath. In the same clip, looks back in the direction of the smoking vehicle and furtively puts the first shirt in a bag.

Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday that investigators have some good leads in addition to the videotape of the man.

Holder said in remarks to reporters that it is too early to say whether the incident was of foreign or domestic

origin or to designate it as terrorism.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on NBC's Today show on Monday that no suspects or theories had been ruled out. "Right now, every lead has to be pursued," she said.

And investigators had not ruled out a range of possible motives. The Pakistani Taliban appeared to claim responsibility for the car bomb in three videos that surfaced after the weekend scare, monitoring groups said. New York officials said police have no evidence to support the claims.

Peter King, the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said Monday on Fox News that there was no intelligence chatter before Saturday, making a foreign connection unlikely.

The SUV was parked near offices of Viacom Inc., which owns Comedy Central. The network recently aired an episode of the animated show "South Park" that the group Revolution Muslim had complained insulted the Prophet Muhammad by depicting him in a bear costume.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg cautioned that the man on the tape may not become a suspect but urged him to come forward.

"He may or may not have been involved," he said, adding it was a hot day and he might simply have been trying to cool off.

The NYPD and FBI also were examining "hundreds of hours" of security videotape from around Times Square. They traveled to Pennsylvania for video shot by a tourist of a different person, and were evaluating the tape Monday and determining whether to make it public.

Police said the crude gasoline-and-propane bomb could have produced "a significant fireball" and sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows. The SUV was parked on one of

America's busiest streets, lined with Broadway theaters and restaurants and full of people out on a Saturday night.

The area bounced back quickly and had returned to its normal bustle on a rainy Monday morning.

Police released a photograph of the SUV as it crossed an intersection at 6:28 p.m. Saturday. A vendor pointed out the SUV to an officer about two minutes later.

The explosive device in the SUV had cheaplooking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks, which were apparently intended to detonate the gas cans and set the propane afire in a chain reaction, said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Investigators had feared that a final component placed in the cargo area — a metal rifle cabinet packed a fertilizer-like substance and rigged with wires and more fireworks — could have made the device even more devastating. Test results late Sunday showed it was indeed fertilizer, but NYPD bomb experts believe it was not a type volatile enough to explode like the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer used in previous terror attacks, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

The exact amount of fertilizer was unknown.

Police estimated the cabinet weighed 200 to 250 pounds when they pulled it from the vehicle.

Times Square, choked with taxis and people on one of the first summerlike days of the year, was shut down for 10 hours.

Detectives took the stage at the end of some of Broadway shows to announce to theatergoers that they were looking for witnesses in a bombing attempt.

Bloomberg took NYPD officer Wayne Rhatigan of the mounted police force out for a steak dinner Sunday night a few blocks from the bombing attempt.

Rhatigan had quickly moved tourists out of the way when he was told of the smoking SUV.

The Detroit-based automaker saw strong sales of several new products, including the Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and GMC Terrain. Full-size pickup truck sales rose 8.4 percent, an indicator that the construction business is in recovery.

The Dearborn, Mich.based automaker's pickup sales were particularly strong. Ford said F-Series sales jumped 42 percent thanks to the new Super Duty truck. SUV sales rose 33 percent, led by the Escape and Explorer. Car sales rose 10 percent.

Korean automaker Kia Motors Corp.'s April U.S. sales rose 17 percent on strong demand for its newly released Sorento crossover and Forte sedan.

Hyundai's sales increased 30 percent on rising demand for the new Sonata midsize sedan.

Subaru's U.S. sales soared 48 percent the back of its Outback small wagon, which doubled its sales from April of last year.

GM's Carlisle said his company's performance is consistent with a slow and steady economic recovery.

The automaker stuck with its forecast of total U.S.

light vehicle sales of 11.2 million to 11.7 million for the year.

That's better than last year's 10.4 million, but far below the peak of more than 17 million in 2000.

Consumer spending rose 0.6 percent in March, the largest amount in five months. Yet the increase was financed out of savings. Incomes rose only slightly. Factory activity in April grew at the fastest pace in nearly six years.

Hell yeah, spring carnival! I don’t know about everyone else, but the alluring scent of fried dough and the sight of cheerful smiling faces (coupled with rickety, heavy machinery) is what makes a carnival a carnival… and by golly, that was one gosh darn good event! Kudos to you SCOPE: I tip my hat to you!

My last positive for the Charger Battery for the year is….you! Yes, you, the one reading this right now. You have made it a very good year for me and for that I thank you! Forget about anyone else: it is you, my favorite reader, who has made writing the Battery such a special thing for me! So always remember that deep down in my heart that you are my favorite!

You know what really grinds my gears? When people get pissed at people in charge of an event because of their own foolishness or because of rules set forth by the university that, frankly, we can’t change! I’m sorry!

I know some people who don’t want this reminder but…the seniors are graduating and to be quite honest I am going to miss quite a few of them! Even though this is not a wholly negative thing at the moment, it is to me because I won’t be able to see all my smiling senior friends’ faces everyday next year. It brings a tear to my eye :’(

The Battery Charge Okay people, I have had a chance to overhear many-a conversation this past week, and many touch upon the question “What do you mean the concert tickets are sold out? Capacity is only 1500? Why don’t you change it? What do you mean it’s set by the fire marshal? So you mean I’m shit out of luck?” By the way, this lovely conversation went on an hour before ticket sales officially ended, and consisted of a girl yelling at the person in charge. Another lovely conversation I heard consisted of, “what do you mean I can’t go in to see the comedian without an ID!? You know why you have these crappy policies? Because you are a crappy university, what’s the number for the RA? I’ll get him fired for taking my ID for sign in.”

People, if you think it’s a bad university, then don’t go to our events. Stop bitching about life so much; you don’t always get what you want. If you want to see any concert, you don’t wait ‘til the last minute to get tickets. You pick them up as soon as possible…duh.

HOLLYWOOD ... Once again, the divine Chris Pine gets a paragraph in this column and headlines elsewhere. He’s back in Tinseltown, prepping for a stage appearance. Here’s an actor who loves to act -- be it onscreen, onstage or anywhere else he can flex those thespic accoutrements. His love life? That I can’t answer. Gather ‘round girls, and duke it out!

Try this on your spelling bee. GABOUREY SIDIBE. Of course, you know she’s the luscious fat lady who plays Precious. And she’s just as luscious and precious in real life as she is on screen. And yes, her clothes must be made to order. I’ve never met her, but she is one person I would like to. She looks like wonderful fun!

And how’s this for a name? Aziz Ansari. He’s the star of NBC’s sitcom Parks and Recreation and is set to host the 2010 Movie Awards in June. He’s a new personality on the horizon, so glom on to the spelling of his name. ...

And a final note in this week’s column on spelling. To all of you who have asked, yes, all the Jennifers in film and on TV that I can think of spell their names with two “N”s.

I don’t know how many of you wait up for the late shows, but being an insomniac, I am one of them. Tickles me to see most of the femmes appearing in little nothing dresses, and using their long, thick hair to keep themselves warm.

Aside to Viola B. of Boston: Sorry, I have never had the pleasure of meeting Oprah Winfrey. However, I agree with everything you say. She is probably the biggest femme name in showbiz today. As to her personal life, as I said a few columns back, I really don’t know about the “Stedman” relationship. And P.S. I’m sure she would get a big kick out of the little boy who was “listening to Okra.”

And to Nancy H. of Los Angeles: Indeed, I did know Jack Benny. Not only was he highly talented and one of the world’s top entertainers, he was the nicest, kindest person you would ever want to meet. I worked with him. I was on his New Year’s Eve Show (incidentally, it still runs in replays). I was with him at lunches and dinners, and when I was president of the Hollywood Women’s Press Club, he was the top guest seated at my table because he was to receive an award. In the middle of lunch he said to me and to his PR person, Irving Fein, “I have pains in my stomach.” So, Irving and I helped him out and up the stairs and into Irving’s car. He was taken to the hospital, and he died shortly afterward.

Q: While I love hearing about all the Twilight kids, I’d really like to know what my favorite vampire, Peter Facinelli, has in the works. -- Ingrid S., via e-mail A: Peter Facinelli, aka Dr. Carlisle Cullen, is ready to prove his action credentials -- he’s reportedly signed up to star as World Lightweight Champion Vinny Pazienza, called “Paz.” The boxer stunned doctors by returning to the ring just three months after a near-fatal car crash in the 1990s. The movie is set to start shooting next year. Peter also has written a movie for the Hallmark Channel, in which wife (and 90210 alum) Jennie Garth will star. He’s also keeping busy on the small screen as Dr. Fitch Cooper on Showtime’s critically acclaimed series Nurse Jackie.

Q: I was so happy that TNT picked up Southland earlier this season when NBC failed to renew it for the second season. Is there any word yet on whether TNT plans to give it a third season? -- Gerry F., Scranton, Pa. A: TNT recently announced -- to the delight of many die-hard fans -- that it has renewed the critically acclaimed cop drama Southland for its third season.

The 10-episode Season Three will begin airing in January 2011. TNT executive vice president Michael Wright praises Southland as “a challenging, visceral show that engages viewers with its immersive style, provocative story lines and complex characters.” And by the looks of my mailbag, many of the show’s fans agree.

Q: I first saw Avatar on the big screen in 3-D at Christmastime, and I wasn’t too sure I’d like it as much watching it on DVD on my small screen at home, but I am glad to say I was wrong. I am amazed that such an epic movie can also be so warm and intimate, as I find it to be this way on my 50-inch television screen.

What do you think? -- Davey P., via e-mail A: I couldn’t agree more. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that “Avatar” is not just an action/special-effects vehicle, it also is a wonderful story. When I spoke with CCH Pounder (who played Mo’at) recently about her attraction to the story line, she had this to say: “There are a couple of things that made me really happy. Regardless of the fact that this is a fairly familiar story, it’s a very strong story. It’s a story of our journey. It’s a story about people. And while you are watching the story of these people, you get to see this extraordinary life form all around you.”

Q: When will the new Sex and the City movie be out? I think I might explode in anticipation. -- Nikki R., Fort Worth, Texas A: Hold on just a few more days! Sex in the City 2 is due in theaters on May 27. Note that this is a Thursday, and not the usual Friday (or Wednesday) opening day.

Effects of Letterman Blackmail Case Hard to Judge

NEW YORK – Robert "Joe" Halderman thought he had a $2 million secret and a surefire plan to cash in on it: Pay him, or he'd ravage David Letterman's congenial, clean-cut image by revealing the late-night TV icon's office affairs.

Instead, Halderman ravaged his own life. The former producer for CBS' 48 Hours Mystery is expected to start a six-month jail term Tuesday after admitting in March to the shakedown attempt.

Letterman blunted the blackmail threat by divulging his workplace dalliances himself. His viewership hasn't suffered, and his status was barely scuffed.

But celebrity lawyers and image-makers say it's unclear whether the case will function as a cautionary tale that deters similar episodes.

Many luminaries would rather beat back or settle such matters privately than press charges that would air their dirty laundry, the experts say. Even if a threatened celebrity is willing to go public, few have the persona and forum to do it the way Letterman did: in a forthright, sometimes funny monologue on his own show.

"There are lots of people running around the planet thinking that blackmailing celebrities or prominent, wealthy people is a great way to make a living," said veteran celebrity publicist Michael Levine. "The lesson of Letterman is: Every so often, you're going to

run into someone who isn't going to play."

But, he added, "Not all people are David Letterman."

Stars ranging from Cameron Diaz to Yoko Ono have been confronted in recent years with people demanding money to keep photos or information private.

Many others are kept from ever becoming known, attorneys say.

Los Angeles lawyer Mark Geragos said he has discreetly dealt with such situations for notable clients he won't name, including several he handled after the Letterman episode.

"Most entertainers are loath to go public with these things if they can at all help it," Geragos said.

Halderman, 52, isn't expected to speak at his sentencing and declined through his lawyer to be interviewed. Halderman's expected jail term and 1,000 hours of community service were set when he pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny.

He admitted in court that he tried to squeeze $2 million from the Late

Show host "by threatening to disclose personal and private information about him, whether true or false."

He presented the threat as a faintly fictionalized screenplay about Letter-

stroke.

"Letterman gave everybody, within what's reasonable, what they needed to know to make up their own minds and decide what's right and wrong," said Winston-Salem, N.C.based crisis-management consultant Rick Amme.

The case appears to have made little difference with television viewers.

Letterman is averaging 4 million viewers this season, up 3 percent over last season, according to the Nielsen Co. He was helped by not having to compete against Jay Leno for several months.

Still, Letterman has said the scandal took a personal toll.

Her publicist Rick Miramontez, speaking on behalf of her children, said Redgrave died peacefully Sunday night at her home in Kent, Conn. Children Ben, Pema and Annabel were with her, as were close friends.

"Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with breast cancer," Redgrave's chil-

dren said in a statement Monday. "She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Our entire family asks for privacy through this difficult time."

Redgrave was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, had a mastectomy in January 2003 and underwent chemotherapy.

Her death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident and just a month after the death of her older brother, Corin Redgrave.

In theater, the rubyhaired Redgrave often displayed a sunny, sweet and open personality, much like her ebullient offstage personality. It worked well in such shows as Black Comedy — her Broadway debut in 1972 — and again two years later in My Fat Friend, a comedy about an overweight young woman who sheds pounds to find romance.
