In preparation for one of the negatives I have, I would like to thank the UNH version of the Geek Squad for giving us more space in our e-mail. It is greatly appreciated since social butterflies like me deal with uncountable e-mails a day.

Plus it’s a great way to save a few important documents.

Students at the local high school have described Wilkinson, the girl’s boyfriend, as a constant troublemaker and likely to “start an argument over something like a hat.”

The attack occurred in a remote section of town in which there were only two other homes nearby. Neither of the homes was close enough to hear anything, but families living in both reported hear what sounded like faint thunder Saturday night.

The attack has sent the small town of Emory, Texas, with a population of about 1,500, into a deep sadness. During his Sunday sermon at the Faith Baptist Church, where the Caffey’s attended weekly mass, the Reverend Todd McGahee said “When I first heard, I was like, I don't even think I would have crawled out of the house. But

God has a purpose for Terry's life. God has a reason. God gave him the strength to get out.”

Police have discerned that only one gun and one knife were used in the attack. They also know that the family was asleep when the attack started and that Penney and Matthew suffered both gun and stab wounds while Tyler suffered only knife wounds. They would not comment on who they thought were responsible for which parts of the attack, but did say that all four were present the entire time.

McGahee ended his sermon by telling the 80 worshipers in attendance that “There's been a change in this church and a change in this community.

And we can't just wish it away. ... It will be the same loss, the same hurt tomorrow. There's been that change in our lives.”

Israel reduces Gaza operations as rocket fire drops JERUSALEM— Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has instructed the army to halt airstrikes and raids into the Gaza Strip in response to a serious drop in rocket fire from the territory, officials said Monday.

Israeli defense officials and the Hamas rulers of Gaza said there was no formal truce in place.

But the officials in Olmert's office said the prime minister had ordered the army to scale back its operations to allow Egypt to proceed in mediation talks. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the talks.

Heavy violence in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel has hampered U.S.-backed peace talks between Israel and the moderate Palestinian leadership of the West Bank. Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have set a December target for reaching a final peace deal.

Pharmaceuticals found in drinking water, affecting wildlife and maybe humans A vast array of pharmaceuticals- including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones- have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.

But the presence of so many prescription drugs- and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen- in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas- from Southern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit to Louisville, Ky. Water providers rarely disclose results of pharmaceutical screenings, unless pressed, the AP found. For example, the head of a group representing major California suppliers said the public "doesn't know how to interpret the information" and might be unduly alarmed.

How do the drugs get into the water?

People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into reservoirs, rivers or lakes. Then, some of the water is cleansed again at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers. But most treatments do not remove all drug residue.

Community Service Weekend for KGR

WEST HAVEN— The brotherhood of Kappa Gamma Rho has participated in a various number of community service events this school year. Activities have ranged from soup kitchen visits to a Penguin Plunge in December. Just two weekends ago, we participated in Phi Sigma Sigma’s first ever Rock-a-Thon, Habitat for Humanity with Delta Epsilon Beta, and WPRL’s eleventh annual Shamrock and Roll run in New Haven.

Starting on Feb. 29 and continuing through Mar. 1, Phi Sigma Sigma held their Rock-a-Thon.

The Rock-a-Thon

is a national event in which people are sponsored to rock in rocking chairs for 24 hours straight. All money raised went to Phi Sigma Sigma’s national philanthropy The Phi Sigma Sigma Foudation, which then donates the money to The National Kidney Foundation. Brothers and sisters from Greek organizations came out and made this event a huge success.

On Mar. 1, eight brothers helped to build up a condominium complex in Bridgeport, Conn.

Along with Delta Epsilon Beta and other volunteers from the community we started progress needed to get the houses into the proper shape in order to start the main construction. This was the

second time we had teamed up with Delta Epsilon Beta while working with Habitat for Humanity this semester.

Our last weekend in February came to an end with the eleventh annual Shamrock and Roll run hosted by WPLR in New Haven. After hosting this event, we were privileged with the opportunity to see Ailey II, another outstanding part of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, perform at the Shubert Theater in Downtown New Haven on Mar. 2. Ailey II is the school’s junior company in residence and serves as a bridge between the school and the pro-

Darden, who got 17 of her 21 in the second half and overtime periods, cashed her jumper from the left side foul-line extended with a hand in her face and just 3.9 seconds remaining. After a timeout, with 2.1 seconds left in regulation, the Chargers got the ball in to Hood, but her off-balance three-point shot was offline and short.

chance to win the game in overtime, getting the ball in her hands on the final possession after an inbounds from half court. Taking the feed in the high post, Hood dribbled right, put in a contested leaner, and was fouled by Darden. Bridgeport took a time out with 1.4 seconds left to try to ice Hood, but she buried the free throw to put the Chargers ahead 78-77 as the crowd erupted.

But UB was able to come all the way back and take a 45-43 lead thanks to a 13-2 run over the first 3:40 in the second period.

run, which raised the intensity level on both sides and set up the dramatic finish. UNH re-took the lead two possessions later, and would lead until UB took a 64-63 lead on a pair of Darden free throws with 1:04 remaining.

The impressive win over Bridgeport was unfortunately silenced after the game against Molloy the next day.

The loss could be a bittersweet ending to another successful season for the Chargers, who went beyond 20 wins for the fifth time in the last six seasons and for the third year in a row- including both seasons under head coach Jessica Smith.

Alert the Media

The 2008 presidential campaign has succeeded in monopolizing every form of mass media in the past few months, and is likely to continue to do so all the way through November.

Newspapers, television stations, and Web sites have all contributed to informing the public of the current political situation.

And although some of the debates seemed to take on an American Idol air, the media has not fallen short of doing its job. It should come, then, as no surprise, that our political beliefs are largely shaped by factors that go unnoticed by us.

The presidential election taking place in our country right now can be considered a popularity contest. Robert Zajonc, a social psychologist, studied the exposure effect, which describes the idea that people express liking for things simply because they are familiar with them. In November, if a Democratic president is elected, will it merely be because John McCain didn’t receive as much airtime as Clinton and Obama? Even further, in the beginning of the campaigning, when there were several candidates in each party, the same few people kept getting placed in the center of things.

Obama and Clinton were continually seated in the middle of the other candidates during debates, and McCain found himself sandwiched between the Republicans, as well. Regardless of who was speaking,

these media-hogs were never out of the picture. The spotlight on them caused shadows to be cast on their opponents.

While the old saying, “all press is good press,” may hold true above, Hillary Clinton is sure to disagree. The media has been biased against Clinton for years, and has not let up since she began campaigning for presidency.

Reporters are seemingly less patient with her than they are with the other candidates, and they jump at the chance to put her in a challenging situation.

When the first question of the Feb. 26 debate was addressed to her, before answering, Clinton said, “Can I just point out in the last several debates, I seem to get the first question all the time?”

Saturday Night Live also picked up on the media’s coddling of Senator Obama, suggesting that he gets to sit comfortably while Clinton is being attacked.

The reasons behind the media biases aren’t always out in the open. In some cases, the explanation could be as simple as a network or newspaper supporting the candidate that would secure the interests of its company. Perhaps this election has caused the reasons to be less clear. Negative attitudes towards Clinton could be a result of the media being less intimidated by a woman, and more comfortable putting her down.

Let’s Play a Game of Follow the Follower

Man, am I glad that I waited until after Monday’s USGA meeting to write my editorial.

Let me begin with a disclaimer: I’m not pointing fingers and I’m not naming names. Before you start writing your response to this editorial, keep in mind that if you misread this, it is your own fault because I’m not talking to you any one person in particular.

Now we can begin. A lot of things happened at USGA Monday. We voted on Constitution changes, the Media Head Selection Committee, and numerous pointless things. It was during all these things that I realized how terribly we represent our student body.

I would hope that when I am represented in the United States House of Representatives, my rep doesn’t look at the

Rhode Island rep to see what he is voting for and I hope my rep doesn’t abstain from voting for something he should be voting for.

Many of you probably agree that this is not the way you would want to be represented. Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you but it is exactly how you are being represented here.

The people that sit at USGA meetings are supposed to be representatives; whether you are representing your club (club reps), your class (class reps), or the student body as a whole (senators).

Unfortunately, as a governmental organization made up of representatives, the USGA is not functioning well. I feel at this time that it is necessary to go over some general representative manners.

Item one: make up your own mind. I was

I’ve written in the past about the Phelps family of Topeka, Kansas. So for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Phelps and their church, the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, let me familiarize you.

Fred Phelps is the pastor and leader the Westboro Baptist Church, an independent Baptist church listed as a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Fred Phelps is known for preaching that “God hates fags” and that God will punish ho-

If we are voting about something to do with media heads, the only people that have any reason to abstain from voting are the media heads. I know I’m using a specific example, but this is not the only case I’ve seen where people abstained when there was no reason to. Either vote “yes” or “no.”

And the last item for today: relax. If something doesn’t go your way, don’t pout about it. If someone makes a point against you, don’t whisper angrily about it to the person next to you.

It’s just a vote, it’s not the end of the world.

I think that we all forget sometimes that we are there as reps.

No one wants to be represented by someone that can’t think for themselves. Let’s get our manners back for next meeting.

The outside of this bar/club/restaurant or whatever you want to call it is decorated with frogs and weird signs. Although there’s a four foot tall sign that says “You Must Be This Tall to Drink,” you better be prepared and have identification on you because they check it at the door and it is 18 to enter. There is about a $10 cover charge, but that is to be expected.

If you ask me, if you don’t want to support gay marriage then so be it; if you don’t want to support those who are atheist, so be it; if you don’t want to think that any belief is right except your own, so be it; but you’re crossing both a legal line and an ethical line when you defend yourself with the First Amendment but refuse to have it used against you.

This is a unique review for me because I had always heard of the band, Murder by Death, but never decided to listen to anything until I picked up their newest album, Red Tooth and Claw.

To say the least, I was very impressed.

Upon listening to the first track, I was treated to an entirely different sound than what I had expected. The first song on the album, “Comin’ Home,” sounds like an explosion of surf rock

and folk music. The vocals are deep and desolate and the music drives forward with an epic feeling. The following two tracks give a more subtle folk feel with the use of intricate cello patterns combined with vocals with a clear influence of a southern feeling.

The lyrics tell stories of whisky drinking, fighting, and a mixture of love and hate. The fourth track, “Fuego!” brings the pace up with mixture of dance and southern rock. If any track off of the album would be a single it would

probably be this one.

It comes off as one of the more “poppy” songs on the album.

The vocal melody gets stuck in your head after the second or third listen and I often find myself humming it on my walks to class.

Track 5, “Theme (For Ennio Morricone),” is where I think the band stands out the most. It’s the first instrumental track on the album and one of my favorites. It’s a song that sounds like it’s right out of a duel and in See SPOOFS page 11

Favre Retires

GREEN BAY— After 17 NFL seasons, Brett Favre has called it quits. Favre, who played 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, decided last week to end his career as an NFL player.

Favre shocked many people when he decided to retire on Tuesday, Mar. 4 after having a very successful season. Favre lead the Packers to the NFC championship game only to fall short in overtime against the New York Giants, who would go on to win the Super Bowl.

When Favre was asked why he chose now to retire after being so close to another championship, Favre replied, "I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally.

I'm just tired. If I felt like coming back and my wife Deanna and I talked about this, the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl.

To go to the Super Bowl and lose would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful, and

honestly, the odds of winning a Super Bowl, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for."

Favre is the only three-time MVP in NFL history. Favre is also the career leader with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 passing yards and 160 wins. He started an impressive 253 straight regularseason games which will more then likely never be matched by any other player.

Favre's last season was one of his best of his career. Favre bounced back from a subpar performance in 2006 in which he threw 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Favre threw 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in leading the Packers to a 13-3 season and a trip to the NFC title game this season.

There is some speculation as to whether Favre will get the urge again to play. There are some that feel Favre is not ready to give the game up and will be back playing for either the Packers or another team. Favre however has said his decision is final and that he will never play for anyone other then the Packers.

West Chester Sweeps Doubleheader CHARGER PRESS RELEASE

WEST CHESTER, Pa.— No. 15 West Chester University remained unbeaten this season with a nonconference baseball doubleheader sweep of University of New Haven at Serpico Stadium on Sunday, Mar. 9. WCU won by scores of 5-0 and 10-3.

West Chester remains unblemished at 10-0, while UNH falls to 0-6, with all their losses coming on the road. The Chargers play at Southern Connecticut and Pace University this week before hosting their first games at Vieira Field

on March 15-16.

GAME ONE- West Chester 5, UNH 0 (7 innings): West Chester's Chris Powl and Eric Carmichael combined on a 3-hit shutout, striking out seven batters to keep UNH at bay in a 5-0 win.

Powl hurled five innings of two-hit ball, walking three and striking out five to pick up his third victory of the season. Carmichael closed out the win with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair.

Matt Sommo took the loss for UNH, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk in five innings. Dan Johnson closed out

the game with a scoreless frame, allowing just one hit.

Jimmy Rivas was 2-for-2 with a walk for the Chargers, while Dan Rosa picked up the third hit with a triple in a pair of at-bats.

The rest of the lineup was 0-for-22.

WCU got three in the bottom of the third inning and a pair in the bottom of the fifth.

Drew Pare tripled to left center to drive in a pair of runs in the third, and Kevin McGrath doubled in one of the runs in the fifth. The other scored on an error.

GAME TWO- West Chester 10, UNH 3 (7 innings): WCU jumped out to a 3-0

lead after one inning, and added one run in the third and a gamechanging six runs in the fourth for a 10-3 decision.

Jason Bowman allowed two runs on 10 hits in five innings for WCU, striking out six. Kyle Bechter was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's, while McGrath was 3-for-3 with two RBI's. Pare drove in three.

For UNH, Rivas was 2-for-3 while Michael Moras drove in a run with a pair of hits.

Robbery Flick Keeps Viewers Captivated

ral manner allowing for the ease of tension only before it is built up yet again. Although humor is not the main focus of the film, it is still noticeable and very much appreciated. While some films try to stick it in a character that is only there for comic relief (i.e.

National Treasure), this film’s more natural approach keeps the humor less forced allowing for more authentic dialogue.

The acting in this film is solid, with every character being able to play his or her role convincingly and effectively.

Jason Statham, despite playing a similar character in his previous films, manages to build on his perfor-

mance enough that the audience is willing to overlook the obvious similarities to his other roles. David Suchet (A Perfect Murder) and Peter De Jersey both give very strong, gritty portrayals of their characters, which provide some of the most tense and thrilling moments in the film.

The most important aspect of any heist film is its ability to build tension, and this film has plenty of it.

Without tension, the audience is left bored, checking their watches to see when the movie will end. With numerous close calls involving British Intelligence, difficulties while breaking into the bank, and unforeseen connections to

London’s most dangerous, the viewer’s eyes are glued to the screen throughout the film.

The Bank Job has no particular cinematic element, which is weak, but instead, a few minor areas, which could be slightly improved. However, none of these aspects are enough to seriously damage this film and its characters.

Bottom line…The Bank Job is not just for the person who enjoys crime films, but for anyone who wants to go see a good movie. This is one film this semester that is worth spending your money to see in theaters without feeling like you’ve been robbed.

“Business Lunch at the Russian Tea Room,” which was directed by Christopher Durang, showed the audience a struggling playwright and a superficial producer.

The playwright wants to write something meaningful while the producer wants him to write a movie about a rabbi and a priest falling in love and getting simultaneous sex changes to surprise the other. Dismayed but in need of cash, the playwright ponders how the script would unfold. Of course, hilarity ensues, which

left some audience members holding their stomachs and wiping their eyes.

The last play of Act One was “Family 2.0” directed by Jeremy Tortora. It depicted a man who gave up his family because it was too boring and he had too many responsibilities for a new one. He buys his way into this new family and even forces the old husband to become the family dog in order to stay in the house.

Act Two started with an original play by student A. Mike Forgette called “Experiments.” The experiments referred to in this play are sexual in nature. The narrator of the story becomes more and more di-

old Clint Eastwood movie with the use of vibrant horns to compliment the booming rhythm of the drums and guitar. This is really how I had pictured the band before listening to them for the first time.

The next two tracks, “A Second Opinion” and “Steal Away” bring back the fast pace that was set by the very first track.

Each one has a very unique mixture of cello and drum work combined with the screams of the guitar to combine the mixture of surf and folk elements.

Skipping ahead to the final two tracks on the album, the gears shift yet again to show heavy influence from early 50s rock and roll, especially heard in the song, “Spring Break 1899.”

The hint of Motown is thrown in with the descending vocal melodies that break into a final instrumental breakdown to finish off the album.

This is a good release from a very unique band. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something new and fresh to add to their collection, if they haven’t already.

Short Plays Offer a Lot of Laughter as Elm City Theater Company Grows Each Semester

allowing a cast member to be in numerous plays.

The first play, “Playwriting 101” was directed by Nicholas Theodoseau. It went through the various ways in which to write a good play and often had the cast members going in reverse to try something again. The play was about how to add an entertainment value to plays in general and did not fail to evoke laughter and applause from the audience.

“The Mystery at Twicknam Vicarage,” directed by Alyssa Biggs, centered itself on an absolute ridiculousness that was hysterical while still having a plot. It included

sheveled with each appearance on the stage.

This play is a fantastic work that Forgette should be proud of.

“Ferris Wheel,” directed by Sara McGuire was next.

The play is about a woman and a man stuck in a Ferris wheel car. The woman is scared of heights and the man decides to give up smoking. In funny conversation, both admit their flaws and develop a relationship that will be renewed each year at the Ferris wheel.

Tim Fasano directed “Captive Audience.” This play shows television’s power of persuasion.

It is this power displayed by the two TV personalities that sent

the audience into fits of laughter. The final line of the play delivered a final laugh to all the audience members playing the game.

For those who are not playing the game, its secret will not be revealed here. Suffice it to say that Nicholas Theodoseau won it as the lights dimmed.

The final play, “The Wedding Story,” was directed by Daniel O’Mara. It started as the stereotypical fairy tale. It involved the cast members sitting along the outskirts of the audience as children listening to the tale. In the acting out of the story, the bride and groom interrupt constantly with anecdotes of how life really is.

The informal atmosphere of the house made seeing all of the plays very enjoyable. People should not think of going to the theater as work and the company did a fabulous job of ensuring this.
