NFL Looks at Contentious Free Agency

N

ow that the NFL season is officially over and done with, the free agency race is ready to begin. For some teams this can spell hope and bright future, but for others it could very well spell disaster as big name players change hands from team to team.

There are a few really big names going out on the free agent market this offseason. Here are some of the biggest names on the market: ● Alshon Jeffery, WR – Jeffery is definitely one of the biggest free agents that’s up for grabs this offseason. Now the question is: Who will get him? Many would like to think that the Bears will try their hardest to keep their star receiver, but as many people know he is up for grabs and everyone in the league could use a great playmaker like Jeffery. ● Kirk Cousins, QB – Another name that people are keeping their eyes on. Cousins played an above average season for part of the year, but he tailed off towards the end. Now that he has proved to be a very capable starting quarterback in this league, he may be a very sought after free agent, but one would think that the Redskins would pay any amount of money to keep their starter around, even if it means losing two of their starting wide receivers in the process. ● Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, WR – These two go hand in hand, for the most part, as two of Cousins’ targets on the roster. With their contracts expired however, the Redskins front office may very well be letting one, if not both, of these receivers go as they have to – or so we think – pay Cousins the amount of money they need to in order to keep him around. ● Eric Berry, FS – Berry is the defensive leader for Kansas City and it should be a no brainer for them to try and keep it that way, but he can go to the highest bidder. There are a couple of teams that could definitely use a defensive guru like Berry in their secondary and it would be a huge blow to KC if they lost him. So, if contract talks don’t work between KC and Berry then their best bet is to drop the franchise tag on him and trying again next year. ● Martellus Bennett, TE – Bennett played a huge role in Gronk’s absence from the team, due to a couple of fractured ribs, by not only providing a much needed spark from the tight end spot, but also giving the team a more colorful media presence—as if they didn’t have one already. Bennett is a well-rounded tight end who is highly valued by the Super Bowl Champs so, it doesn’t seem like their front office is just going to let him go without a fight, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy fight. ● DeMarcus Ware, Julius Peppers and Robert Mathis, OLB – Now you might be wondering why these three are grouped together and that’s because of two reasons: 1. All three of these guys are highly valuable defensive end/outside linebacker hybrids. 2. All three of these guys are over the age of 30; Ware, 34, Peppers, 37, and Mathis at 35. Whether these guys stay with their current teams or if they find a new home somewhere else they will be an asset wherever they go. ● Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB – Everyone in the league saw what the Jets went through just to keep Fitzpatrick on the roster, and they also saw the less than desirable play of offense with Fitz at the helm. It’s safe to say that this past season made just about everyone in the league stay away from Fitz in free agency, as a starter at least. He’s going into this offseason as an Exclusive Rights Free Agent, meaning he’s only allowed to sign with his previous team, the Atlanta Falcons, unless Atlanta extends a minimum qualifying offer to him. Judging by Allen’s defensive excellence throughout the season, especially in the playoffs, it doesn’t seem like Allen is going to get that qualifying offer. ● Kiko Alonso, ILB – Prior to a couple of years ago, Alonso was the backbone of the Buffalo Bills defense, then he was traded to the Eagles for LeSean McCoy, had an ACL scare, and was later traded to the Miami Dolphins along with cornerback Byron Maxwell. He is pretty much on his way to becoming the backbone of Miami’s defense, if they can keep him around. Seeing as Alonso is a restricted free agent, and is one of the better inside linebackers the league has to offer we’ll have to wait and see if the Dolphins can shell out enough money to keep him.

Olge, Felizor Named Charger Athletes of the Week

T

he University of New Haven Athletics Department has named men’s basketball’s Kessly Felizor and women’s basketball’s Katia Oge the University’s StudentAthletes of the Week.

Felizor is a freshman hailing from Hightstown, New Jersey and was named the honor after his dominant performance on both sides of the court last week (Feb. 5- Feb. 12).

Last week Felizor averaged a total of 15 points while also racking up an average of ten rebounds each game against the University of Bridgeport and Adelphi University.

Felizor has been named NE-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week three times this season, with the most recent being the week of February 5. In his 24 games played at U.N.H., he has scored 233 points, with his height being 22 in a game against American International.

At Hightstown High School, Felizor was a three-year starter and captain of the team there. He also hold the school record for free throws and charges taken.

Oge averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 57.7 percent this week. She recorded her second double-double of the season behind a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds against St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday before scoring 14 at Adelphi on Saturday.

Oge is a member of the NE-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also led the Chargers to sixth place last season in NE-10 with 36 blocks. She also averaged 4.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in the last season. In high school, Oge helped the team win two consecutive county championships in 2013 and 2014.

The sophomore is already having a better season than last year, topping her points record by 20 points in five less games so far. He point total is currently at 290 for her career, having playing over 1,000 minutes of basketball with the Chargers.

Hip-hop was born in the Bronx in the mid-70s with two turntables and a microphone. DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc were spinning at clubs and block parties. An Open Letter to the Campus Community from a College Republican

O

ne of the most beautiful things about the United States is the peaceful transition of power that happens every four years on Inauguration Day. Millions of Americans gather to watch this historical moment, some are excited, others hopeful, and in some cases, people are scared. These feelings are completely normal, especially when the future is uncertain. However, there is one thing that needs to always happen and that is that we need to unify; to come together as one and try and do what’s best for everyone. This is not currently happening; our country is currently divided. Republicans and conservatives are not the reason for this division; when we look back at the election and presidency of Barack Obama, we see that things went on, Republicans sucked it up that Obama became our President and went on with our lives. We did not riot in the streets and block roadways for weeks on end, we did not cry in the streets and justify terrorizing neighborhoods because he was “#NotMyPresident.” As President Trump said during his Inaugural Address, “When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.” Now, regardless of your thoughts about our President it is important to take those words for what they are and reflect upon them. Think about the days following 9/11 and the Boston Marathon Bombing, think about the night President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed. After these events Americans opened their hearts to patriotism, they came together, they cried together, they helped one another, they rebuilt their cities all without prejudice.

Why? Because patriotism can be the biggest unifier in a time of need.

The University of New Haven College Republicans is an open group which welcomes students of all values and cultures. Our goal here is to bridge the gaps that exist in our society and change people’s perceptions of what it means to be a millennial Republican as well as help people understand that just because our parties’ platform supports something that some do not like, that does not make us bad people. Ultimately, we all are going to have our own values and beliefs, even within our parties. Our members are all over the political spectrum which allows us to garner healthy discussions and share our ideas in a constructive manner. In College Republicans, all points of views are heard, expressed and respected. We believe in free speech and want everyone on campus to have a voice, and to those who feel they are not heard; we understand you and we feel that exact same way. Imagine being in a classroom and feeling intimidated to state your opinion because the moment you state your thoughts and ideas you will be attacked for feeling differently than your classmates, that is what we as millennial Republicans experience on a regular basis, especially on this campus.

If we look at what is going on around the country on college campuses, we see a pattern of Universities trying to silence free speech.

This hits as close to home as our very own campus when Sheriff Clarke was disinvited to speak for a slew of reasons (we still do not know the exact reason; however, it was political in nature). We see riots breaking out at UC Berkeley when conservative speaker Milo Yiannopoulos was invited to speak on campus, students turned to violence which is completely unacceptable. Even here on campus at the “open forum,” students who supported Sheriff Clarke were verbally attacked and had accusations made of them for supporting the outspoken Sheriff and stating their feelings on him being disinvited. We are here to learn, every one of us, and ALL our opinions should be respected by one another. Just because you do not like someone’s thoughts and ideas does not mean that they are not entitled to their opinions. Speaking your opinion does not mean that it is okay to shout over someone else’s – once again, this was a recurring theme at our “open forum” on campus – which needs to change for us to all come together on this campus.

I ask the greater campus community to find things that unify us rather than things that divide us. We may be Republicans but we are far more than that. We are white, we are black, we are Latino. We are male and female. We are straight, we are gay. We are Americans, Europeans, Middle Eastern. We are all people. Let’s put our ideas aside and respect one another for who we are. We do not have to agree on all policies, but that is the beautiful thing about this country, we can express our opinions, so let’s not attack others for those opinions.

National Leadership Is Needed The views expressed by many experts who research and write on infrastructure issues point to a general agreement on the magnitude and complexity of this problem.

Little agreement exists, however, on a consensus of how to achieve a comprehensive nationwide solution to restoring and maintaining Ameri-

ca’s public infrastructure. One point, though, seems obviously clear. The necessary leadership and policy direction required to properly address this national issue must come from the highest level of government. It is only within a national policy framework that states, counties, and cities, can work together to improve the current condition of our public works facilities.

Local and state governments alone, because of their many diverse policies, multiple budget demands, and varied fiscal constraints, cannot be relied upon to achieve the comprehensive financial solution required to solve this national problem.

The prevailing philosophy of our national government has been to let the lower levels of government (states, counties, and cities) solve their own infrastructure problems, regardless of the nature of their complexity or the magnitude of the funds needed. If a solution is to be forthcoming, the political posture of our government needs to become more positive and proactive. Assertive federal government leadership must make the difficult policy decisions, as well as approve the funding required, to solve our country’s infrastructure problem. Poem topics ranged from her personal experience teaching, to relationships and race.

Stewart classifies her favorite writers as Lucille Clifton and Maya Angelou. She started out journaling at the age of eight year and eventually it turned into poetry. Her dad was abusive to her mom and journaling was a way to escape and get out.

The event kicked off with students from the W.R.I.T.E. Poetry Club performing some of their own pieces. When it was time for Stewart to perform, she mentioned how her poems are like conversations and how it is hard for her to write about herself.
