WEST HAVEN— All of us are familiar with G-mail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail.

Well, here comes another e-mail Web portal, only this time, it is the product of one of UNH’s graduate students.

Libimail.com, a multi-lingual e-mail/ chat site was developed

by Computer Science grad student and former Charger Bulletin columnist Sijith Salim. The website, which allows communication in seven languages, was inaugurated by President Kaplan, in a small inaugural function on Dec. 10, 2007.

Salim, guests, and faculty from the Computer Science and Electrical departments joined together in the Alumni Lounge to celebrate this original master’s project.

The function began with a welcome speech by Dr. David Eggert, Project Advisor for Libimail.com.

This was followed by the site inauguration by President Kaplan who logged onto the site and sent an email to Salim. After the inauguration, Salim offered a demo of the project, taking the audience through the different functions offered on the site.

Student Launches Multilingual E-mail Site

Since we write e-mail using alphabets, I felt libimail should be the best name for my email website."

Salim was invited by the president to present his Web site to the UNH Board of Governors, which he did in January.

The project, which took almost one year to complete, gives users the ability to sent e-mail in the language they choose. Any page can be changed to any language and users are given the option to do a multi-lingual chat in the browser.

In addition to English, the site supports six Indian languages.

Salim plans to add many international languages like Spanish and French to the site soon.

Libimail started as a small project during Salim’s undergraduate study in Computer Science from Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kerala, India, where he developed an e-mail portal in his native language and English.

The overwhelming response he received from the site prompted him to think of enhancing the project to a wider audience by including other languages being used in the country. His new version includes Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujrati, Tamil, Kannada and English.

Salim, nicknamed

as Bill Gates or Mr. Gates by his friends, organized a team to complete this project last year. His friends helped mostly in the language conversion.

The server is hosted by Salim from a company called Network Solutions. He was assisted by Anish and Sony (ipathIndia. com), who gave the necessary network support to configure the mail system.

Salim acknowledged the help he’s received, “I thank all those who

My articles helped to achieve that. It was something like a self motivation,” Salim said.

Salim embraces this site as more than just an assignment, “I released my first Libimail version as a college student. My dream was to release this second version of the website while I was still a student, but in at an American university. This was the main purpose of me coming to the United States to take up my master’s program. Now I have made my dream come true.”

The tour was at a very pivotal period for NBC; it was the first day back for SNL since the recent writer’s strike. The new episode was a strong return for SNL's 33rd season and featured former writer and cast member Tina Fey. Steve Martin also appeared during the monologue. American

Idol winner Carrie Underwood was the musical guest. During the tour, the SNL crew was visibly busy running around preparing the sets to air live.

NBC has been a catalyst for primetime television and American culture for over 60 years. NBC first appeared on radio waves in the late 1920's and turned over to television in the 1940's. It delivered the crossover of culture and transition between the

1950's and life-changing events in politics, sex, and media from the 60's and 70's continuing through the 21st century. NBC was the first television channel to broadcast in color, ahead of its competitors by almost 10 years.

After the studio tour was finished, UNH students hung out in New York for the day and returned back to campus safely later in the evening.

Valentine’s Shooting Shakes the Nation

DEKALB, Ill.— “It’s like the American dream cut short,” Jaime Garcia stated at his sister, Catalina’s memorial service. She was one of the five victims in the shooting that took place on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Northern Illinois University (NIU). It is still inconclusive as to what caused 27-yearold Steven Kazmierczak to enter the lecture hall and open fire, before taking his own life as well.

It seems as though at the present moment there was no motive for the attack. The only piece of information that the media seems to think may have something to do with it is that Kazmierczak ceased taking some type of medication two weeks ago. The

shooter’s girlfriend, Jessica Baty, stated he stopped taking his medication because, “it made him feel like a zombie.” She also mentioned that, “he was not acting erratic, just a little quicker to get annoyed.” Police have not disclosed what medication it was that he was prescribed.

Kazmierczak was respected by faculty and students. He was honored two years ago by NIU for his work in Sociology with a Dean’s award.

Kazmierczak served as vice president of NIU’s Criminal Justice Association. Jan Carter-Black, his adviser, described him as, “engaging, motivated, and responsible. I saw nothing to suggest there was anything troubling about his behavior.”

Grady, reported Kazmierczak had purchased four weapons– a shotgun and three handguns. Approximately, 48 shell casings and six shotgun shells were discovered in the classroom.

The shotgun and one of the handguns were tracked to a gun dealer in Champaign, where Kazmierczak was attending graduate school. The purchases were legal, and there was no reason he would have been denied purchase because a criminal background check was performed and he had no criminal record. Kazmierczak possessed a State Police-issued firearms owner’s identification card, which is required in Illinois to own a gun. These cards are rarely issued to people with a recent mental health problem.

Annual Business Competition Gets Underway

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Spring Semester phase of the 2007-2008 Connecticut Business Plan Competition is now underway. The competition, now in its tenth year, is open to undergraduate and graduate students attending college in Connecticut.

Winners are eligible for cash prizes of up to $35,000.

Entries in the Business Plan Competition may be submitted by individual students or teams. At least one member of the team must be enrolled as a full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate student at a Connecticut university or college during the Fall 2007 or Spring 2008 semester. The students must have a faculty adviser and the plan

must be for a new business; businesses with annual sales in excess of $50,000 are not eligible.

Winners will be selected in four categories: Undergraduate Student Venture Enterprise, Undergraduate Student Small Business, Graduate Student Venture Enterprise, and Graduate Student Small Business. Each of the four winners will receive a grant of $2,500.

The two Venture Enterprise winners are eligible for a startup grant of $25,000 and second and third place finishers in the Venture category will be awarded grants of $10,000 and $5,000.

In addition, Connecticut Innovations will award a $10,000 grant to launch a business in Connecticut to a technology-based student business selected as a finalist.

The student business plans are assessed by a panel of business financing experts and entrepreneurs. Finalists will be invited to make a presentation of their plan to a panel of judges on April 25 when the winners will be selected.

There is no fee to enter but the deadline for entry is April 7.

We Ain’t Show-Offs!

First, let me just say that I am a proud member of the ATeam. This organization gives tours around campus and helps out at open houses. So in Celina’s article last week, that was who she was talking about.

We are dedicated students of UNH who are proud to represent the school.

Yes, the rec center is brand new and it is the university’s pride and joy. It is a must to go inside and take a peek. We are not going in there to gawk at the sweaty patrons who use it. We are merely letting the prospective students and their families witness firsthand the new equipment and how much it gets used.

On a typical tour, we bring the students and their parents into every other building, so why should the rec center be an exception? If I was going on a tour and they brought me by the rec center, I would definitely want to see what’s inside. Being able to see what goes on inside of it could

be one of the reasons why I choose to attend UNH or not attend it.

We show residential rooms, is that an invasion? We ask for residents’ permission, of course. And we also asked permission of the rec center.

There are not 5,000 tours a day, and most of the time these tours are small. And we are in the rec center for a total of five minutes, maybe even less. So get over it. If it makes you feel better, the next time I give a tour, I will tell the families to not look at anyone and just close their eyes or look at the ceiling while I describe the facility to them.

Would that work?

And when the new residence hall starts construction, apparently you will be able to hear the tour guides tell the families about it. Where will you be living that you can hear us say that? We don’t yell at the top of our lungs when we give tours.

The University of New Haven is not the only place that gives tours. Every other col-

lege and university in the U.S. does the same thing. I bet the students there don’t mind when a tour walks by them.

We are doing our job and if pointing out different locations and going inside buildings is a part of that job, then we must do it.

By the way, whenever we get finished with a tour, we always get compliments on how great and informative it was.

On a lighter, friendlier note, I totally agree with you about the parking situation.

The new residence hall will take away a whole bunch of commuter spots, so where will they park? What if they encroach on the residents’ parking spaces? It’s already hard for me to find a spot behind Dunham, Sheffield, Winchester and New Hall so far this semester, though I have been lucky.

Hopefully over the summer, the university will make some more parking spaces for residents and commuters.

You Must Be 18 to Read This

The essence of democracy lies in participation. If we do not participate, there is no democracy. Therefore, if we do not vote and thus participate, we have no say in how our country will be run and who will run it.

The University of New Haven has done little in way of enlightening its students on voting. The sight of campus bulletin boards speaks volumes. Flyers for Delta Sigma Alpha recruitment and Heath Ledger remembrancemovie-watch-a-thons plague the cork. I still have yet to see a sign (or a note card for that matter) urging the young people to get active. We’ve had 50 Cent advertise his vitamin water in Bartels; where is Diddy with those “Vote or Die” t-shirts?

ing sifted about from news station to news station, all I can say is this: register to vote.

Registering to vote will not only allow you to participate in the Presidential election, but also in town, city and state legislative affairs. I know, don’t get too excited just yet. In between your Facebook binges, open a new tab and hit up www.rockthevote. com. Rock the Vote will let you register on the spot. If you click the “register to vote” button in the top right corner, your form will shortly pop up.

Also, remember that voting isn’t all that political. Sure, you can register as Republican or Democrat, but it is never set in stone. You can change your political party as you wish or register as something else, perhaps Green or Independent. When the

political aspect of voting pokes its head out, say when it is down to one Republican and one Democrat, you still don’t have to do anything. The beauty of being registered to vote is that, in the end, you don’t have to do it.

I mean, if you’d like to uphold democracy and have a government by the people, that’s cool, but no one holds even the proverbial gun to your head in the decision-making process.

But I can’t make you do a thing. If you want to register and have a say, you have got to do it yourself. There is no way around it. So until the United States goes red with revolution or decides to hide beneath the soft blanket of neo-fascism, it remains a democracy.

Democracy means you’re in.

Early this year, many people around the United States took a moment to rejoice in the fact that we, as a people, have a choice on what we can do with our bodies. For a long time, people did not have a choice and it was up to their partners, religions and the government to decide what was okay and what was not. In this day and age we appreciate and gladly take the freedom for ourselves and make our own choices by whichever means we deem necessary.

Choice is a deep word that not many

people understand or appreciate. Choice is not only the option to have an abortion, but also to have a child.

In a world where most do not have to worry about getting honest medical care, we do not understand how doctors could go to Puerto Rico or into poorer communities and talk women into getting sterilized. We do not understand how choice means the choice for one woman and while that choice may not be right for every woman it is right for her. We as a people must unite and respect her for making

that choice for herself and no one else.

Just take a minute when you think nothing is going your way and imagine if you did not get to make choices about your body or life. Would you be in college? Would you have gotten that silly tattoo that you love because it was the first thing you did in college? Would you be able to order pizza three times a week during finals? Choice is something that affects everyone. It is not only about abortion, it is about everything.

Charlie Offers a Comedic Look at Serious Issues

Charlie finds it hard to make friends, mostly because he wears a suit jacket and carries an attaché case.

His psychiatrist puts him on Ritalin, which he decides to sell at school. After becoming business partners with the school bully, Murphey (Tyler Hilton, One Tree Hill), he begins acting as a psychiatrist in the boy’s restroom at school.

Obviously, he begins quite popular, winning the attention of Susan (Kat Dennings, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), the principal’s daughter.

Obviously, once Charlie wins the love of the whole student body, obstacles begin to get in the way of Charlie’s welloperated business. To begin with, Charlie’s first client, Kip, overdoses on the Xanax and Zoloft prescribed to him by Charlie.

While Charlie grows more responsible with his influence, the rest of the school takes his advice as new-found confidence and violently protest the placement of security cameras in the student lounge. Charlie is forced to take the fall, as the adults around him believe his presence has caused the school to fall apart.

The beauty of this film is its manipulation of the story. On the surface, the plot could be read as a simple teen comedy with some dramatic self discovery weaved into it. However, the film goes much further than that. It explores drug use among teens and adults alike that is sure to speak to people everywhere.

The main reason the

students seek Charlie’s guidance in the first place is because their absent or distant parents won’t help them.

Charlie’s own mother is so sedated by antidepressants that she does not realize how desperate Charlie is for friendship. Twice in the film, adults are heard discussing the drugs they did when they were teens, yet they punish Charlie for giving out prescription drugs to kids that just might need them to get by. None of Charlie’s customers get high.

With this dark underbelly to the story, it could be difficult for some movies to make it funny too.

Charlie Bartlett, however, seems to have no problem. Even during the dramatic climax of the movie, you will find yourself laughing. This dynamic style makes Charlie Bartlett a must-see.

Kidd Finally Traded to Mavericks

DALLAS— The Jason Kidd trade was finally made official on Tuesday, Feb. 19 sending him to the Dallas Mavericks.

Kidd had made it clear about a month ago that he wanted to be traded from the New Jersey Nets to a new team that had a better opportunity to make a run in the playoffs. After many thought Jason Kidd would be headed to Dallas a week earlier, but Devon George would not let it happen.

George had a no trade clause in his contract which he exercised. George made it clear he did not want to play in New Jersey and wanted to stay in Dallas. This made it difficult for the trade to get executed if George was going to be part of it. Finally when the NBA went on its All-Star break, talks resumed and this time it did not involve George so it was very likely the trade would happen.

This time however another odd name was thrown in the trade.

For the trade to work, Keith Van Horn would have to come out of

semi-retirement and be traded to the Nets.

Van Horn accepted the offer and the trade was made.

The Mavericks also received forwards Malik Allen and Antoine Wright. New Jersey, on the other hand, received center DeSagana Diop, guard Devin Harris, swingmen Maurice Ager and Trenton Hassell, and the aforementioned Keith Van Horn. The Nets also will receive first-round picks in the 2008 and 2010 NBA drafts.

the New Orleans Hornets. Kidd however did not shine for his new team, only picking up eight points and five assists in the Mavericks’ loss. Kidd also was not himself when he had the ball, turning the ball over six times for the Mavs.

Many feel Kidd’s poor performance can be attributed to him getting used to his new team and experts feel it is only time before Kidd gels with his new team and the Dallas Mavericks become a legitimate contender in the Western Conference.

UNH (0-2) got a career-best three-RBI effort from junior Chad Lemos, who blasted his first career home run and was 2-for-4 overall. Dan Rosa and Jimmy Rivas also collected two hits apiece, with Rosa doubling twice and Rivas once.

Gamers Prepare for an Exciting Year con’t from page 8

and people have been ranting about this for a long time. Much like World of Warcraft, it will be a subscription game, meaning you be paying each month to play with people over the Internet. Speaking of “World of Warcrack,” much like the beginning of 2007, the virtual drug pushers at Blizzard are releasing, in September 2008, a second expansion of their extremely successful franchise. I know I for one will be slitting my bank account open and giving my life’s blood to Blizzard over World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King.

Real time strategy games have always been near and dear to my heart, as many people who read my column are well aware. For the PC, we have multiple, four to be exact, to look in to.

Technically, one will be multi-platform, but I love Command & Conquer so shut it and read on!

For those lovers of the Starcraft series, Starcraft 2 might be coming out… *squealing noise.* It may not make the 2008 deadline, but a big fat nerd can dream, right? Keep your eyes out for this one, because it is going to be bigger than sliced bread. Another interesting take on the RTS genre is a game brought to you by Maxis, the company who brought you SimCity. Spore is a game where you begin from a single-celled organ-

ism and evolve your way to the top! It was finally announced to be released this year, after I had to listen to friends cry and whine about all the release delays.

For those interested in historical fighting, Empire: Total War might be a good game to try. Moving on from the success of Rome: Total War, Empire takes place in the Napoleonic ages, and includes real time ship combat.

Finally, we come to my heart and soul: Command & Conquer 3. Yes, it is coming out with an expansion, because as fans of the series know: Kane just won’t lie down and die! Kane’s Wrath is set for a spring release…again, *squeal*.

Xbox 360: It is still hard to find consoleexclusive games nowadays, especially after franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider, and Guitar Hero have gone multiplatform.

Sellouts.

Two major titles were announced as 360-exclusive this year worth mentioning: Gears of War 2 and Fable 2.

Gears takes place almost immediately after the first one, and was literally announced a couple days before the writing of this article. Look up the teaser trailer on YouTube…it’s pretty much awesome.

Fable 2, highly anticipated by the way, takes place 500 years after the original. Many of the favorite features of the

game will still be included, although a lot of the new content is still pretty hush hush.

That usually means it is worthwhile. If you were a fan of the originals, I would give both of these games a try.

Playstation 3: So I researched. I looked and I searched the web as hard as I could.

I honestly could not find an exclusive title for the PS3, with the exception of Resistance 2. Yes, if you didn’t know, they are making a sequel.

Also, there is some game called Haze coming out. I think they are calling it Haze because you don’t know whether or not you’re actually a bee. I mean, seriously, nectar power and nectar focus? It looks good graphically, but in an FPS situation…I don’t want to rely on nectar to pwn my enemies.

It is a well-known fact that I think PS3s are a huge waste of money. But then again, I do play World of Warcraft…I think I just I just destroyed my own logic.

Nintendo Wii: The Wii has one serious game coming in very soon: Super Smash Bros. Brawl! With the addition of multiple new characters, and with five hidden characters to unlock, this could be one of the biggest games of the year for the Wii. The color schemes of the stages and characters both look amazing. In addition, the new looks to finish-

ing moves and other attacks, as well as hilarious cinematics that pin favorite gaming moments from the brawlers’ original games make this a worthy title.

Handhelds (PSP/ DS): There are a lot of titles coming out for both platforms in the handheld region this year; literally too many to list. Furthermore, too many to look up and research without going insane from the various High School Musical titles and Chicken Hunter.

Besides, a lot of the really really coolsounding games are multi-platform, like Ghostbusters and LEGO: Indiana Jones.

I would like to mention that the PSP is coming out with a God of War version. Whether it is a cheap knockoff for their handheld system like a lot of similar games, is completely unknown.

That would be it my gamers! If you are really interested in some of the games I discussed, look them up, they really are amazing. I realize that I am going to be real poor real soon, like below the poverty line. But I am okay with that, because I will have some great stuff to play!

One small problem with this film is that there aren’t enough film parodies. The audience is shown only three fully sweded films while the others are done in an all-too-brief montage, leaving you wanting more. However, we are not saying that

the montage is bad, in fact it is extremely well done in a typical Gondry fashion. The simple truth is that the sweded films are so funny that you want to see more of them and perhaps less of the secondary plot.

Bottom line...Be Kind Rewind is a good choice for a comedy to see in theaters in the upcoming weeks, however if you really must save the money then pick it up on DVD, or maybe perhaps on a sweded VHS.
