and markets. The logo on the bottle is of a smiling Buddha meditating under the sauce’s now officially trademarked name. While Cavallaro keeps the Sikorsky gig because, well, something has to pay the bills, and it’s not his teriyaki sauce, he hopes to make it big with Ooh-Fah sauce one of these days. “We dream at the bar about our Ooh-Fah commercial at the Super Bowl,” he said. Matthew Broderick made an appearance on campus last week. Cool right? Too bad no one knew he was here. I understand that a certain amount of privacy was obviously needed for whatever project he was working on, but to keep it such a secret that even professors had no clue seems a little unnecessary.

What the dickens is wrong with the heat in the Rec Center? From the moment you walk in until the moment you walk out, all you can think of is how hot it is in there! There’s almost no need to exercise since you lose enough weight in sweat from walking once around the track. Maybe you guys can cool it, literally, on the temperature.

Holy cow! The C-Store (yes, CStore because I refuse to call it the Quick Zone) has a thousand new products! Okay, maybe not really 1,000, but has anyone else noticed the increase in choices!? Finally! The Charger Pep Band is doing an awesome job-just wanna give them props! They have had such a presence at all of the volleyball games. Must make the players feel great! If only more students made a spiritfull appearance too.

I’m still sitting on the park benches in Maxcy waiting for the vending machines to come back. I have a feeling I’ll be here for quite a while. At last week’s USGA meeting, President Kaplan assured students that the greatlymissed vending machines would be back in Maxcy by the end of the week. They unfortunately are still missing. Surprise! Wa r m weather = return of mud!

UNH Graduate Student Starts Sauce Business

morphic red pitcher bursts through a brick wall and exclaims “Oh, yeah!” In Cavallaro’s version, a giant Buddha plays the role of the Kool-Aid pitcher and most likely exclaims “Ooh-Fah!” when he crashes through. At 41, Cavallaro — his friends call him “Cav” — has followed a long and winding path to his current double life as engineer/teriyaki sauce entrepreneur. Cavallaro grew up in West Haven and graduated in 1985 from Notre Dame High School. His love of cooking developed when he was a teenager working at the former New England Food and Beverage and Duffy’s Tavern, where his sauce is sold. He went on to pursue a major in industrial engineering from the University of New Haven. After graduating in 1990, Cavallaro tried to land a job in the engineering field, “but

I was competing with guys with 25 years of experience.” Couple that with the fact the economy was tough at the time, and Cavallaro decided to pursue other options. So the newly minted engineer packed his bags and, on a whim, went to culinary school at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. After graduating in 1992, he traveled to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, to work as a chef for a U.S. military resort nestled among the Alps. There, Cavallaro rodE his bicycle to the restaurant where he worked. “It was just like out of a Hans Christian Andersen story. It was beautiful,” he said. After that job, he worked at the Mill River Inn, a fine dining restaurant on Long Island. “There wasn’t a can opener in the place. We made everything from scratch,” he says. Then it was off to Chicago, where he cooked for 500 em-

ployees of a law firm. After a few years in the kitchen, Cavallaro got a little “burnt out” on cooking, so he switched gears completely and went back to engineering. For the last two years, he has worked at Sikorsky in Strat-

ford, a short commute from his home in West Haven. Cavallaro is at his desk every weekday by 7 a.m. and spends the day analyzing data and working on computer code.

police and fire protection must come first and we all must cut everywhere we can, let’s do some costbenefit analysis before we cut too deeply and in the wrong place. In many ways, when challenged to do more with less, we find ways in which we can do just that. But the big secret of libraries is they do this all day, every day. Libraries are inherently costeffective because they share resources. They are “information cooperatives.” A dollar spent here multiplies many times. The $50

book that circulates to 100 people lowers the cost to 50 cents per use while saving each user the purchase cost. That $50 is now worth $5,000. Interlibrary loan services increase usage even further. A better example of “more bang for the buck” is iCONN, the statewide library cooperative that provides us with databases like PsycINFO and Academic OneFile. An early 2007 press release said that the $2M spent on iCONN was saving $31M for the individual libraries, many of whom

It was in the machinist department at Sikorsky, where his engineering job is based, that Cavallaro entered his notyet-famous, unnamed teriyaki sauce in the “Titanium Chef” contest in 2006. He took first place in the ap-

petizer category, and after some encouragement from co-workers and friends, Cavallaro took the leap. After getting the recipe just right and finding a manufacturer

to produce the sauce, Cavallaro set about the task of getting stores and restaurants to sell the sauce. A list of places that offer the teriyaki sauce can be found on his Web site, www.oohfah.com. Where did the name “Ooh-fah” come from? It’s a favorite saying of Cavallaro’s. As in, “Oohfah! That was a good meal!” His friends’ children even call him Mr. Ooh-Fah. Chris Walsh owns Duffy’s Tavern on Campbell Avenue, one of the restaurants that sells the sauce and offers dishes seasoned with Ooh-Fah. Needless to say, he’s a big fan. “The sauce is excellent. It has a lot less sodium than your typical teriyaki sauce,” Walsh said. Walsh is considering an unusual twist on typical teriyakiinspired offerings. He plans to offer an OohFah-infused Bloody Mary cocktail in the future.

“It’s not actually on the menu yet,” Walsh conceded, but added that it could be on the seasonal cocktail list by the spring. “It’s kind of the sweet and spicy-type thing and it goes quite well together.” Cavallaro said friends and family have offered a number of unusual ideas for the sauce. His friend’s dad puts it on vanilla ice cream. Another friend drizzles it over pizza. Last year at this time, Cavallaro was just getting his first batch of the manufactured sauce. “It wasn’t right; too sweet,” he said and frowned. But the manufacturer eventually got it right, he added. Cavallaro won’t be wrapping up bottles of sauce as gifts for loved ones this holiday season. “My family has bought so much OohFah,” he said. “My friends and family have been very good to me.”

could not otherwise afford the resources at all. Additionally, that $2M was paying for 33 million searches, making the cost per search an astounding six cents. Economies of scale and the whopping increase in use of iCONN make this one of the best library values in this state or any other. Academic libraries are feeling the pinch right now and the Peterson Library is no exception. It is, however, a given that there is probably no other single unit on any campus that

serves the entire university constituency more than its library. Through books, videos, periodicals, databases, computing equipment, and informational services, the library benefits, at least potentially, each and every student, instructor, employee, and administrator, on campus and off. With efforts largely relying on existing resources, we at the Peterson Library are offering more “goods and services” than ever before. Consider the following: -Nearly 100 com-

puters, including new iMacs and laptop PCs, all linked to three high-speed printers, and working seamlessly in our UNH wireless zone. -Expanded hours of operation in response to student requests. 7:00 a.m. openings. Midnight closings. Later hours, as always, during finals. -A battery of nearly 100 databases, most available 24/7 from Internet terminals anywhere, to support our academic programs. -A collection of

We have 97 participants across 29 teams all working towards a healthier lifestyle. However, if you didn’t get the opportunity to sign up, come to the Rec Center anyways. On Tuesday nights there is a “Weight Loss 101” class at 6 p.m. in room 205 at the Rec Center. The class is an educational program that discusses weight loss, diets, and being healthy. Being healthy doesn’t sound like a good time on a Thursday night does it? Well, what if I told you that several ladies had the opportunity to

dance their way into shape in a party-style class last Thursday night? In a ladiesonly, one-night event called “Fit Tease” ladies danced to “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” by Britney Spears. Ashley Ventrone attended the class commenting, “This class was a lot of fun. Everyone felt comfortable, and we all had a great time. I can’t wait for the next one in April.” The ladies got to unleash their inner divas by sipping on sparkling cider and dancing with feather boas. If you missed out on this experience or you want to come back and learn more moves, look out for registration to April’s Fit Tease.

Apply for USGA Positions Today

Today, the applications for USGA President, USGA Treasurer and USGA senator are available on ChargerVoice.com. I am extremely excited for the elections process this year as we are now allowing USGA senators to campaign for their positions. USGA senators will be allowed to form campaign teams and campaign for the position of USGA senator. For those of you considering running for a position within the USGA I would

strongly encourage you to do so. Student leadership positions in the USGA enable students to become liaisons between students and the university administration. One of the reasons the USGA is able to be so successful is because we have such a diverse group of senators and club representatives that enables us to hear from many different positions. Libraries are the engines that transport dozens of information passengers with one book, hundreds with one laptop, and thousands with a single database. These builtin cost efficiencies propel library services forward every day, even as digitization enables us to reach farther beyond our traditional four walls. If the country is worried about the bot-

tom line, it should look to its libraries, which produce the kinds of returns on investment that the stock market can never replicate. Rather than considering cuts that cause the least visible damage, let wiser heads work to capitalize on the hidden dividends that libraries pay out every day. Library dollars make sense. Countering the Protest-Fight the WBC

Welcome back to Part Three of my following of the most screwed up cult in America – the Westboro Baptist Church! You may recall my past articles on this group, but let me briefly tell you more about them, straight from Wikipedia’s mouth to your ears! The Westboro Baptist Church is a Topeka, Kansas based church that has been around since 1955. The organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and is classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. While its members identify themselves as

Baptists, the WBC is them as unaffiliated to an independent church the Primitive Baptists. and is not affiliated The views that distinguish Westboro Baptist Church are views that most Baptists and Calvinists do not recognize, and do not consider to be in any way characteristically Baptist or Calvinistic. For years now, the Westboro Baptist Church thinks that Zack Rosen they can use their Assistant Editor religion to say that God hates gay peowith any known Bap- ple, Muslims, Jews, tist associations. The and Americans-just church describes itself to name a few. They as following Primitive make unwelcome visBaptist and Calvin- its to picket the funerist principles, though als of fallen American mainstream Primitive soldiers, visits by the Baptists reject West- Pope, concerts put boro Baptist Church on by gay musicians and Phelps, regarding (i.e. Elton John), and

many other events and activities that this cult disagrees with. Most recently, the WBC has put out a press release in regards to last week’s plane crash in Buffalo, NY, stating the following: “GOD HATES AMERICA. THANK GOD FOR THE PLANE THAT CRASHED IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK, KILLING 50. WBC WILL PICKET THEIR MEMORIAL, WITH A MESSAGE FROM GOD WHO KILLED THEM.” It’s one thing if you’re screwed up enough to actually believe that a god wanted 50 people killed in a

horrible accident, but it’s another thing altogether when you take your message of hate and picket memorials and funerals. So the point of this week’s editorial is this – fight back! On Friday, Mar. 13, the Westboro Baptist Church will picket at Lexington High School and Hanscom Air Force Base after visiting Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in the morning. Members will picket at Reading High School in the evening. Wicked Local, a Lexington, Mass. publication, stated that the group’s main focus will be the protest in Reading, where the

high school will stage a performance of The Laramie Project, a play written about student Matthew Shepard. Shepard was a gay university student who was beaten and murdered in 1998 near Laramie, Wyo. by two men who tried to justify the beating and murder by using a so-called “gay panic defense.” If dates work right, I’ll be there – and I invite you to come along if you’re outraged by this cowardly group as well. Don’t sit back and let them have their way, but instead show up to create a counter protest twice their size.

Animal Awareness Tip: Portuguese Man O’War By MAIDELINE SANCHEZ STAFF WRITER

–––––––––––––––––

Anybody may be convinced that Portuguese Man O’Wars are jellyfish because of their long thin tentacles attached to a crescent-like head. As a matter of fact, Man O’Wars are not jellyfish but a combination of four different types of organisms that work together. The Man O’War is made up of four sections or polyps. The upper polyp is where the name of the siphonophore (animal made up of a group of organisms working together) is derived from. The

inflatable balloon usually situated above the surface of the water resembles a warship and only move when wind is available. Whenever Man O’Wars feel threatened, they deflate their upper polyp (pneumatophore) and sink below the surface. The lower section is made up of another type of organism that forms the tentacles. On average they reach up to 30 feet below the surface, however they can stretch up to 165 feet. The tentacles contain venom that can paralyze and kill small creatures such as fish. On a human, the sting becomes agonizing

but can rarely cause death. The third and fourth polyps consist of digestive and reproductive organisms. The Man O’Wars’ life cycle involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. During the fall when large groups of Portuguese Man O’Wars gather together, sperm and eggs are released from both the males and females. When the eggs develop, larva is formed producing colonies in a process called budding. Later on, larvae separate into four polyps causing them to become an adult Portuguese Man O’War.

Senator Spotlight

Name: Samantha Chester Senator Since: September 2008 Major and Year of Graduation: English, 2012 Why did you become a USGA senator? I became a senator to get involved in our UNH community right away. I also wanted to allow freshmen to have a voice in the USGA since we are currently the largest class on campus. What have you done so far as a senator? So far as a senator I have sat on a student task force working with Dean of Students Rebecca Johnson and other staff members. We have observed and analyzed the rela-

tionship between the USGA, Graduate Student

Council and faculty. We also compare our student government to similar universities. What would you like seen done at USGA or UNH? I would like to see more events and participation at UNH. As the Executive Assistant of the Class of 2012 I have been working with our executive board to plan events which will allow the freshman class to step up and make a mark

on UNH. We are currently planning a “UNH’s Got Talent” show for the spring—very exciting! Is there anything you would like to tell the student body? I think the student body as a whole has to come together more to support our peers. Whether that is by attending a play, sitting in on USGA meetings, or cheering at a game at North Campus, it’s important to take advantage of everything going on at UNH. How can students get in touch with you? E-mail me at sches1@ newhaven.edu or stop by during my office hours on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Bartels.

DeLonge went on to form the band Angels & Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker teamed up in +44. Barker, one of the two that survived, made it off the plane, sustaining serious burns and injuries. After the accident, Hoppus blogged that communication with DeLonge had been resumed, and the three were connecting again as friends. than the $19 million it cost to make the movie. "It's a great title, and it was a great weekend to open. We had Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. "I've seen it play a number of times, and the audience is with it the whole way. A lot of screams and a lot of laughs." The Friday the 13th series has been one of the most-enduring horror franchises, spawning 10 sequels, including the crossover grudge match Freddy Vs. Jason, pitting Voorhees against the boogeyman from A Nightmare on Elm Street. The movie bumped off the previous weekend's top earner, the Warner-New Line romance He's Just Not That Into You, which fell to second-place but held up strongly over Valentine's weekend with $19.6

Among other new movies, Disney's comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic landed in fourth-place with $15.4 million, while Sony's thriller The International is No. 7 with $10 million. Confessions of a Shopaholic stars Isla Fisher as a magazine retail writer coping with her own compulsive buying habits. The International features Clive Owen as an Interpol agent and Naomi Watts as a prosecutor uncovering a bank's global misdeeds. Friday Remake Dominates Box Office

LOS ANGELES— Friday the 13th had all the luck as the remake of the 1980 slasher flick opened with $42.2 million, putting blood and guts ahead of hearts over Valentine's Day weekend. That was a record for the horror genre, topping the $39.1 million debut for 2004's The Grudge. Accounting for today's higher admission prices, The Grudge sold slightly more tickets, however. Released by the Warner Bros. banner New Line Cinema, Friday the 13th updates the grisly story of killer Jason Voorhees and his rampage among youths at a secluded summer camp. On opening day— which fell on Friday the 13th—the remake pulled in $19.4 million, slightly more

Q: My grandmother gave me a hideous sweater for Christmas, but due to her fragile heart I don’t want to tell her I hate it. How do I find a way to exchange it? A: Grandma is going to be heartbroken if you exchange the sweater she got you. I would keep it and just wear it around Grandma. It will make her so happy to see you wearing it. A: Exchange the sweater then wear the new one in front of her telling her it is the one that she originally purchased for you. She’s old, right? She won’t know the difference.

A-Rod’s Legacy Tarnished with Steroid Use

By JOHN OKO

SPORTS WRITER

–––––––––––––––––

The big news that has rocked the baseball world is the report that New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003 while playing with the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez did the right thing and came clean in an interview with ESPN’s Peter Gammons. A-Rod said he felt the pressure of playing in Texas under a big money contract and that caused him to take the performanceenhancing drugs from 2001-2003. When this news broke people were outraged. They could not believe that one of the biggest names in the sport had cheated. But the bottom line is that baseball fans have to realize that we are living in the steroid age. Baseball has

always had some form of cheating. Let’s face it: players will do anything to find an edge, whether it is pitchers greasing up balls, players using corked bats, or even players takers steroids. Cheating has always seemed to be part of the game. Now do I think what ARod did was wrong. Absolutely. But I along with every other Yankees fan will surely be applauding him when he blasts a 400-foot shot over the wall at Yankee Stadium against the Red Sox. What I am trying to say is no matter how much steroid use is in the game of baseball the true baseball fan is always going to fill the ballpark when

it comes time for another baseball season. The MLB has had this steroid problem for

to find their rhythm as they went on a 10-4 run over the next five minutes to take a six point advantage on a layup by James Carr. The Ravens staged a comeback and brought the New Haven lead down to one, 14-13, but Cassius Chaney and Kelvin Jackson combined for the next 11 Chargers point to push the advantage to 25-21 at halftime. New Haven extended its lead to double-digits early in the second half. A pair of three-pointers by D.J. Sackmann and a dunk by Jackson helped balloon the Chargers'

lead to 46-28 with 8:33 left in the game. Franklin Pierce was able to get within 11 points, 50-39, with 2:38 left in the game, but Sackmann completed a three-point play on the next New Haven possession to cut short the Ravens' comeback. The Chargers wrapped up the game by going 6-for6 from the charity stripe. After shooting 10of-28 from the field in the first half, the Chargers put in 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the field in the second half. New Haven held

a part of the game of baseball for about 15 years now. For 15 years players have

thing. It’s sad that I kind of assumed he might be on something but that is the age we live in. All you have to do is ask yourself one simple question: if you were in the situation Rodriguez was in along with many other current and former players with the chance to put up untouchable stats and make millions of dollars, would you consider taking steroids? I cannot say for sure if I would, but I would think long and hard about using a substance that would enhance years now, and with tried to get an edge my skills. every new name that anyway they can. The Let’s face it; we are is released, people still reason is simple. Mon- in the steroid age of show up to support ey and fame. I can not baseball. I almost a dark age in this great around. kind of assumed that game that so many Steroids have been he might be on some- people love. There is

still a lot of work to do to get rid of this problem. Some say it will never happen because every time a new test is made to test for enhancers that were once untestable, there will always be someone that is one step ahead of the game making a new substance that cannot be tested for. Rodriguez is now always going to be questioned throughout the remainder of his career. Many people have targeted Rodriguez as the guy to break Barry Bond’s all-time home run record. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was thought that A-Rod was going to be the guy that did things the right way. But Rodriguez just like Bonds, Sosa and McGwire’s legacies are going to be tainted forever. The sad thing is that this is just a few names of many that will be tarnished forever.

billion, up 22 percent through the same point in 2008. Factoring in 2009's higher ticket prices, movie attendance is running 20 percent higher than
