It is an exciting time for many, but none more than for the incoming freshman class.

Don’t Call it A Letter to the “OSA” Anymore Class of 2020

ver the summer, University of New Haven students received an email announcing the change of the “Office of Student Activities” to the “Center for Student Engagement, Leadership and Orientation.” CSELO (pronounced “see-low”) will replace the formerly known OSA, while expanding on the duties and responsibilities of the institution.

“We feel this title truly reflects our contributions to the campus community and the student experience,” the email read.

“The change permits the alignment of titles with staff responsibilities and better reflects the responsibilities of the department.”

As indicated by Greg Overend, CSELO director, the duties of the office will be mostly the same, although this new title will better allow students to understand the role of the office on campus.

“There were some internal responsibility changes within the office, but the office itself will not

change,” he says.

The change in title also allows the office to better deal with responsibility and issues as a whole.

Each staff member will have an area that he/she will cover (i.e. Greek Life, events, orientation,

programming, etc.) in order to have the maximum amount of efficiency in each area.

“I think it’s going to be a culture change,” Overend explained. “The upperclassmen know OSA and Freshmen only know CSELO, and I think they’ll identify more with engagement, leadership and orientation as a place to go.”

In terms of the duties of the office, there will not be any expansion in the near future. However, it is the goal of the staff to expand the “sphere of influence” CSELO has. Now that the duties are better aligned with the responsibilities, staff members

The past year of applying to colleges, worrying about getting in, the happiness you experienced when your acceptance letter came, your high school graduation and saying goodbye to family and friends as you prepared to come to UNH is behind you. You are about to start a wonderful new adventure - a new beginning. During the next four years, you will be challenged academically and personally.

As you encounter challenges, I hope that you will utilize the many University resources, which are available to you.

The following are some success strategies to ensure you have a good year: Put academics first.

College is different than high school and you are here because you want to be. Work hard, manage your time well, go to class, meet deadlines, utilize campus resources, and seek help when you need it. Get to know your professors and meet with your academic advisor

on a regular basis. Your learning will depend on the interest, motivation and discipline you bring to the classroom and your studies.

Challenge yourself.

Explore possibilities, meet new people, discover, and venture outside the UNH campus into the greater New Haven community. Be persistent and don’t give up. Be open to students with different lifestyles and values from your own but also be true to your own values and beliefs.

Make good choices. Be a community member who treats others the way you wish to be treated.

Be sure you understand University policy and the Code of Conduct found online in the Student Handbook.

Take care of yourself.

Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise.

Get involved. Join a club or organization: participate in the many activities, events, sports contests, community service opportunities, speakers and programs offered.

Become a contributor to your campus community

and actively participate in your college experience.

Your first few days at UNH may seem like a whirlwind - meeting new people, adjusting to a new routine, finding your way around campus. You may also feel lonely, homesick, and wonder if you will make new friends and fit in. These are very normal feelings which others around you will also be experiencing. Adjusting means learning how to deal with a multitude of issues and your Resident Assistant, Academic Peer Mentor, Academic Advisor, Success Coach, faculty and staff are all here to assist you as you make the transition to the University.

I encourage you to stop in to see me if you have a question or concern and I look forward to getting to know you over the next four years. Best wishes for much success and a wonderful college experience filled with learning and fun as you prepare for your future.

UNH Opens “One-Stop” Office

Students now have an extra incentive to get business done or check up on financial info after they grab a coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts, because if you need to go to the Registrar, Bursar, or Financial Aid offices, you will not find them where they used to be.

Over the summer, after some years of planning, these three offices not only moved under one roof, but one room. What was once the Alumni Office or the Payroll office is now the Student Financial and Registrar Services Office.

As the CSELO director, Overend oversees the implementation of the vision he and the staff designed and are continuously trying to make it as beneficial for students as possible as well as growing to fit a growing campus community.

“When I started, it was just me and a graduate assistant,” Overend says. “Now, 14 years later, we’re still doing student activities, but we’re doing so much more and the name change really reflects what we do as an office.”

After the research was done, comparisons to other schools were made, and the whole staff was on board, the change was able to be put in motion and now UNH has the Center for Student Engagement, Leadership and Orientation.

Also, on the other side of Dunkin’ Donuts is the brand new Student Employment Office, which, combined with Payroll, will serve as the standalone responsible office for student jobs on campus.

Marc Maniatis, Director of Student Accounts & Risk Manager, stopped by a USGA meeting in April to talk about the proposed change and to gauge student opinion on the move.

“One change that we didn’t have before was we have eight computers now that can be used for self-service. Whether it’s to check e-pay, look at a schedule, or check financial aid online,” he explained.

This is a significant change from the previous operation because in that situation students would have to either use their own laptop or have the person at the counter look up information for them.

“Internal efficiencies will increase for all of us, but it’s all about a better customer experience,” Maniatis said.

“The idea first started in conversation with me back in 2002,” says Karen

Flynn, Associate Vice President for Financial Aid. “Part of the problem was we never had the space. Charging forward and the student feedback really moved it forward.”

The goal of this office move was to cut down on student frustration, increase office efficiency, and maximize the amount of space available on campus.

As pointed out by Maniatis, “A lot of other offices had to move out so we could move in here.”

“We also needed a place that was handicap accessible,” said Lynn Kohrn, the University Registrar.

In terms of the Student Employment Office, it will take a huge burden

off of financial aid, which was handling that process in the past. “The creation of that office and having the space to do that is going to be very, very good for the students,” Flynn noted.

The new office will be taking over all of the responsibilities of student employment, streamlining paperwork, coordinating online payroll, and allowing students to job search on campus. The office will handle all jobs on campus as well as some community service activities.

While returning students have not had much of a chance to experience this new set-up, first-year students were able to fully utilize this new space as

they and their families began their journey at UNH last week.

“They’re happy that they can come to one place,” said Kohrn.

With these new amenities and conveniences in one place, students did not have to be sent all over campus to solve different issues, and wait times and turnaround times were very low. According to Karen Flynn, “For those of us who’ve been through it before, it was incredibly smooth.”

“The proof in the pudding will be when everyone comes back and has a chance to come in,” Kohrn said.

Meet Juan Hernandez, Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion

long with the many changes that could be found on the University of New Haven campus community as students gear up to resume classes, the Office of Student Affairs branched off another affiliated office through the installation of the Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion located in Botwinik Hall.

With a purpose of creating a safe space within the campus that allows students, staff, and faculty the resources to come together, the Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion will foster the campus’s rich cultural diversity.

Taking on the reigns of introducing the center to the university is Juan Hernandez, who has been an activist for diversity and multicultural social justices since his high school days.

Hernandez was born on Puerto Rico, but moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois at the age of three. He is the recipient of the prestigious Posse

Foundation’s Leadership Scholarship, which allowed him to attend and graduate Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut to make him not only the first person in his family to graduate from high school, but attend and graduate from a higher institution.

Through his time at Trinity College, Hernandez double-majored in political science and history while being heavily involved with the cultural organizations held on campus – primarily La Voz Latina and the Men of Color Alliance.

All his experience and leadership with in multicultural affairs lead him to take the position of the Program Coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Trinity College where he worked directly with issues of diversity and retention.

After two years as Program Coordinator, Hernandez took on a different role as the executive aide for former-Hartford City Council Preisdent Shawn Wooden toward the end of his term. He then went on to work for the cur-

rent City Councilwoman Glendowlyn L.H. Thames where he dealt with policy and budget issues.

As the inaugural director of the Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Hernandez is ready to work with the university and it’s administration to make the center something that all could be proud of.

“My goal is to make the university a better space for students from underrepresented backgrounds,” Hernandez says. “the University’s diversity efforts are always crucial and I hope that I can assist the University in improving those efforts.”

Eventually, Hernandez is striving to establish a reliable system for students to provide programing ideas for the center, and a strong relationship between both the cultural organizations on campus and the University offices – all with the main focus on benefiting the studentbody.

Until then, he plans on taking baby steps toward his long-term goals like explaining the Diversity Peer Educator’s program

and strategizing improvements for the diversity culture on campus to shine a light on students of “underrepresented” backgrounds while also recruiting faculty that are of the minority.

Hernandez already has a packed calendar for the university in terms of diversity programing that include events for Hispanic/Latin Heritage Month,

Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Identity Day, and that is only the beginning of his agenda.

While Hernandez will go by standard universityset office hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., he is working on utilizing the Diversity Peer Educator’s to maintain office hours past the standard scheduled times.

ello UNH - my name is Glenn Rohrbacker and I will be your Editor-in-Chief for The Charger Bulletin this academic year. I say “your” editor for a reason. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. So, first of all, thank you for taking the time to travel back to the old days and pick up a newspaper. Or maybe you’re reading this online. But whether you picked it up because your friend wrote in it, you wrote in it, you saw the bright colors on the cover, your group or team is featured or you just like news, it’s a good thing.

Back to being “your editor:” I say this because the news should serve the

people, and as a journalist, that should be the main focus. Honestly, that’s why I became a journalist in the first place. I believe that I can do some good by telling people what I think they should know.

Additionally, I think that the campus would benefit greatly from local news being reported. This is where you come in.

We at the Charger Bulletin want to know what is important to you. If there’s something you want investigated, looked into or brought to light, we are the place to go. If your fundraiser is changing the lives of people you don’t even know, we’re the place to go to tell that story. If your event is set to break UNH records, we’re the people to invite.

Basically, if you want people to know something, we can tell it. This year is especially big for

With directors Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters Vs. Aliens) and Greg Tiernan (Thomas and Friends), there is a glimmer of hope that Sausage Party would prevail as one of those laugh-out-loud comedies; however, the downfall of the script has paid dues to writers Rogen and Superbad’s Evan Goldberg.

If the punchline was not about sex, it was either racially inappropriate, stereotypical, or downright stupid. If you were thinking of taking a bite into seeing this movie in theaters, I highly suggest you save your money and wait for the DVD. Seth Rogen, stay away from animation and comedy for a while, as well as my nearest supermarket.
