Freshmen Class Breaks Last Year’s Record

Undergraduate enrollment climbs above 3,500 students as the University of New Haven welcomes approximately 1,500 freshmen onto campus. Fall 2008 had brought a 65 percent increase in enrollment deposits over the preceding year, and this year, that number has grown again by 13 percent. According to Gil Rogers, Associate Director of Admissions and Enrollment Technology, UNH received nearly 10,000 applications for the 2009-2010 year and accepted around 45 percent of them. Rogers claims that the increased interest in UNH can be attributed to momentum – building better facilities, creating “smarter” classrooms, and improving existing areas of campus. He believes these factors are what make UNH a “top destination for some of the best and brightest students around the country.” Neither interest in UNH nor enrollment in the university appears to be impacted by the country’s current economic situation. The number of inquiring students for Fall 2010 admission has nearly doubled since 2007. The number of transfer students has also grown over the past few years. Although Rogers commends members of the Undergraduate Admissions staff for their tremendous efforts, he believes that their recruitment would be inconsequential if the camSee CAMPUS page 5

Welcome Week to Soar Above Expectations with Over $40,000 Budget

Welcome Week 2009 is in full-swing! There are lots of events to check out, and all are certain to entertain! For weeks now, the Welcome Week Planning Committee has been meeting to plan the best events, comedians, and food for UNH students! Best part? It’s open to all students, and it’s totally free! These past few weeks have been beyond hectic for Director of Student Activities Greg “Grego”

Overend and Assistant Director of Student Activities Lisa Saverese. Along with representatives from Residential Life, Athletics, the Dean of Students’ Office, Student Activities, and even The Charger Bulletin, both students and administration have worked incredibly hard to make this Welcome Week the best one yet. Keep reading to find out just a few key events, or check out a fuller calendar of events on page 2. If you’re a new student, from Wednesday through Friday be sure to stop any-

one wearing a yellow All Day Q&A t-shirt! These are upperclassmen leaders who are all around campus to help you find where to go to and how to get around! On Wednesday, if you find a golden ticket in The Charger Bulletin, then you have a chance to win $50 or $100! Make your own aquarium in the Bixler/Botwinik Quad from 12-4pm, and also enjoy a taste of West Haven while you’re at it! Thursday, Marcus the comedian will be in the Bixler/Botwinik Quad from 7-9pm, and there will

be trips to the movie theatre and to go bowling in the evening. Friday evening, from 5-7pm, there will be a K-9 demonstration in the Bixler/Botwinik Quad, followed by Dippin’ Dots and materials to make your own Charger Cavalry gear. At 7pm, join a bunch of people for a glow in the dark Frisbee game at Kayo Field, or check out Wade Live the magician from 8:30-9:30pm in the Bixler/ Botwinik Quad.
