Theater Presents First Musical

WEST HAVEN— The week of April 6 will mean another first for UNH. The school’s theater program, which is fairly new in and of itself, looks to put on its first musical production, an interesting parody of 1950s science fiction films aptly entitled Zombies From The Beyond.

Robert Boles, Zombies is a fun and clever piece of musical theater that offers plenty of entertainment for all ages. From silly science equipment to barely-hidden fifties-era innuendos and scantily clad Zombettes, this musical promises to be enjoyable for all. The plot is full of all the cheesiness of a fifties science fiction film but is portrayed in the very best ways.

The play follows the plight of seven earthlings from the Milwaukee Space

Station who are faced with an intergalactic invasion.

The sultry and determined Queen Zombina (Kelliann Festa) from Planet X has invaded Earth with her band of Zombettes (including Ryan Flanagan, Layla Calo-Baird, Amy Oster, and myself) in order to continue her race, after the men of her planet were wiped out as a result of an “atomic skirmish” between the sexes.

With the current economic situation in our country, it is surprising that some businesses are still booming. However, in the past month, Apple was named the company to have the strongest impact on world consumers, as well as America’s best retailer. Polls of students and professionals show, hands down, the overwhelming admiration for the Apple Company and for its abundance of products.

“It’s no surprise,” declared Matt Rouleau, an Apple employee, when asked how he felt about Apple’s current success. Rouleau described the stores as “efficient and inviting, offering a unique shopping experience.” The company See APPLE page 3

Positives

The new salad bar at Jazzman’s is so absolutely incredible I don’t have words, only drool. Minus the little bit of exaggeration, the new food at Jazzman’s really is a great improvement—both the sandwiches and salads are diverse, filling, and satisfying. And those bagel chips? That’s a clever idea.

Another International Festival, another great time! I do have to admit it’s one of my favorite events on this campus above Spring Weekend. As always, both the food and the company were great. It seemed a little bit smaller this year, so I urge everyone on campus to think about joining in next year to help add a bit of spice to the festival (all pun intended).

Oh and LASA, this is two years in a row that I haven’t been able to get my hand on an empanada!

Negatives

Okay, so I’ve had enough with sketchy men soliciting sex and even sketchier men masturbating in red pickup trucks. While it’s good news these people were apprehended, what is being done to prevent such incidents? They seem to occur so close to campus, and some technically on campus. I’m just afraid that one morning instead of hearing a report of masturbation, I’m going to hear a report of a kidnapping, rape, or homicide.

There has been a lot of confusion about registration this semester, so I’ve noticed, especially with the freshmen.

I’ll admit it has even been a little confusing for me as an upperclassman. I think we need to implement the help tables that we had in past years again.

Authorities Take Hundreds into Custody from Polygamist Colony

Following up on reports of child abuse, authorities have taken about 200 women and children into either temporary or permanent custody.

These people were living on a ranch owned and operated by the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a religious sect that separated from the Mormon Church. The separation occurred after the Mormon Church

disavowed polygamy almost a century ago.

The Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is headed by Warren Jeffs. Jeffs is currently in jail in Kingman, Arizona. He is serving two consecutive sentences of five years to life for being an accomplice to rape of a 14-year-old girl who married her cousin in an arranged marriage in 2001. He now awaits hearings on four counts each of incest and sexual misconduct with a minor.

These charges stem from the arrangement

of two marriages between young girls and their older relatives.

Authorities received a report from a 16-year old girl who said she was abused, had given birth to a child at the age of 15, and was married to 50-year-old Dale Barlow. State police went to the compound with a search warrant granting then access to all buildings within the compound limits in search of any materials pertaining to the birth of a child to the 16-year-old and to the marriage of the 16-year-old.

Vytorin came out in 2004, and combines Zocor and Zetia, which attacks cholesterol in a different way.

The study tested whether Vytorin was better than Zocor at

limiting plaque buildup in the arteries of 720 people with extremely high cholesterol due to a gene disorder. The results show that the drug had no result. These results occurred even though Vytorin did dramatically lower LDL, fats in the blood called triglycerides, and a measure of artery inflammation— CRP. Other researchers decided that they would expand enrollment in a more pivotal study of Vytorin to 18,000 people. It will be 2012 before there is any type of answer.

Zombies is a First for UNH

Rick (Javier Stevens) is a dedicated worker who is anything but what he seems, and Billy (Robert Aceto) provides a comic relief so awkward and charming that it’s hard not to appreciate his determination in asking Charlie out for a date. The Major himself is a booming presence who keeps an eye on things and makes sure everyone keeps in line and that no jinks, “high or low,” occur.

The talent in the show is unbelievable.

Besides the talents of director Robert Boles and writer James Valq, many musical and technical expertises were necessary in producing an absolutely spectacular show. Vocal Director Kelliann Festa aided in transforming the cast of music recording, criminal justice, forensic science, and math majors into an ensemble that sounded just as amazing as any musical cast

could sound. Music Director Penny Brandt lent her unending talents to the troupe and truly whipped the cast into shape with her beautiful music and witty, but alwayshelpful, comments.

Bryan Steele provided technical expertise in the fields of sound and lighting, as well as set construction, to the production and the crew.

Overall, the production team has done an amazing job transforming a cast of diligent college students into a band of cast mates that not only exceeded all expectations, but is comparable to musical theater troupes across the country.

This is an absolutely amazing show, regardless of the fact that I am slightly prejudiced. The performances will run from April 9 to April 12 at 8:00 p.m. and on April 13 at 5:00 p.m. in Dodds. Tickets are free for all UNH students and faculty with an ID, $10 for students not from UNH and $15 for adults.

WEST HAVEN— Secrets: the dirty, desirable and alluring pieces of information that are always on the tip of everyone’s mind.

Secrets can destroy

the current foundation of someone's life or be a catalyst for change and rebuild.

PostSecret's Frank Warren appeared at Dodd's Auditorium Wednesday, April 2 to present his PostSecret project and how it came to be.

PostSecret originally started by Warren passing out blank post cards to strangers around Washington, D.C. Reactions from people were generally as expected, "[although] the people that say they have no secrets usually have

the best ones." The received post cards soon turned into a local art exhibit.

After the exhibit had closed, Warren was still receiving cards. He decided to post the cards onto an See POST page 5

FSC Attends Congressional Fire Services Conference

us to stand and allowed for recognition of our attendance. It was a great experience for our members to have the chance to attend this hearing.

We attended sessions relating to federal funding of the fire service, fire service-based emergency medical services, congressional roundtable discussions on the fire department grant systems and others. Fol-

lowing many of these presentations, we met some of the most influential individuals the fire service has to offer including the United States Fire Administrator, Gregory Cade. We hope to continue a relationship with Mr. Cade that could involve bringing him to campus for a lecture in the future.

Another extremely influential individual we met is known just as well in the politi-

cal arena as he is in the fire service; Hal Bruno. We spoke with Mr. Bruno for only a few minutes, but we shared our experiences both inside and outside the classroom at UNH. He was quite impressed with our academic major and our organization. To quote him, Mr. Bruno stated that he “envied” us for our education in the fire service and wished he had the great opportunities we have.

Mr. Bruno received many awards over the two-day event, and he has made an amazing lifelong contribution to the fire service. It was quite an honor to meet him.

In addition to those great people, we met five Fire Science alumni from all over the country. The Senior Fire Service Specialist for NFPA, Steve Sawyer, is an alumni of UNH and the son of Bob Saw-

yer. Bob Sawyer was the Director of the Fire Science Program in the early 1990s.

Steve Sawyer was very good to the Fire Science Club at CFSI by introducing us to many people who will expand the opportunities both inside and outside the classroom for our students.

The University of New Haven Fire Science Club was the only student group represented at the

CFSI Dinner & Seminars. We received a lot of positive attention from all in attendance simply due to the “young” appearance of the students compared to the distinguished seasoned veterans of the fire service. I hope that the contacts our students made at the CFSI Dinner & Seminars will come to fruition in the near future.

North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Antarctica were represented as students danced and hung out.

The entry fee included a suggested donation to the Environmental Defense Fund, an organization

driving to help the global environmental problems plaguing the universe. Attendees also were given the chance to win great prizes, from movie packages, tanning gift certificates, and a spa day basket.

The Dance-AThon highlighted all the great things the 5-6-7-8 Dance Team has to offer. Dancing, laughter, music, and a great time was had by all of the attendees.

WEST HAVEN— Delta Phi Epsilon will take part in the annual national ANAD Candlelight Vigil, promoting a positive self image through the theme of “Accept Yourself…

Accept Others” and raising awareness of eating disorders.

ANAD, the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, was founded in 1976 and is celebrating its thirty-second year as a non-profit organization dedicated to education, awareness and alleviation of eating disorders throughout the U.S. and worldwide.

“Disordered eating

and poor body images are issues that our young people face every day,” says ANAD Founder and President Vivian Hanson Meehan. “We felt it was time to celebrate our uniqueness and diversity which we are doing through our Candlelight Vigil. Our Vigil also remembers the lives lost to these devastating diseases and the work that remains for us to do.”

The Vigil will be held on Friday, April 11 starting in the academic quad and moving to Buckman 120 at 7:30 p.m. The Vigil will feature speakers, a live band, and the documentary Thin and will center on the ANAD Pledge, which focuses on a commitment to accept and

appreciate ourselves and others just as we are. Additional information about eating disorders, including treatment options and stories of hope and recovery, will also be included, as will a chance to remember those who have struggled with eating disorders. The ANAD pledge will be read just before the candle lighting; as each person takes the pledge, he or she will receive a lavender awareness ribbon.

Getting to Know John McContradictory

I was recently reading an AP news story when I came across this statement: “Republican John McCain insists last year's U.S. troop buildup in Iraq brought a glimmer of ‘something approaching normal’ there, despite a recent outbreak of heavy fighting and an American death toll that has surpassed 4,000.”

Is it me, or is that statement completely wrong? Either John McCain is happy with the fact that heavy fighting will be normal, or he doesn’t seem to acknowledge the fact that 4,000 American deaths means anything.

How You Can Put an End to Sexual Assault

The origins of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) can be traced back to the late 1970s in England. During this time, women organized protests and sponsored events such as Take Back the Night marches as a way of bringing awareness to issues related to violence against women.

Over time, these efforts in Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere were extended to include shedding a light on sexual violence against men as well as the crucial role that men can play in ending sexual assault.

In the 1980s, the momentum created

during the previous decade led to a decision to set aside time in October to raise awareness about these issues as well as domestic violence. However, in the following years, national leaders in the fight against sexual violence decided to find another time during the year when the focus would solely be on sexual assault. After polling state sexual assault coalitions, these leaders chose a week in April, which by the late 1990s, turned into the entire month.

Previous SAAM programs at UNH and other local universities have included Take Back the Night marches and speak outs, powerful guest speakers addressing

sexual assault from a myriad of perspectives, candlelight vigils, and informational tables listing resources for survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones.

I strongly encourage you to support and get involved with SAAM activities on campus and throughout the region. But what happens when April comes to an end? Do we choose to sweep these issues under the proverbial rug, only to be brought out again on April 1 of next year? Or do we choose to feed off the passion and momentum of students, faculty and staff who are unabashedly engaged in the fight to end violence against women?

Here are a few actions you can start taking right now to promote a culture of respect within your spheres of influence (taken from: UConn Women’s Center, 6 Things You Can Do and Jackson Katz, 10 Things Men Can Do to Prevent Gender Violence): 1. Stop using sexist language. Words such as bitch, slut, whore, and pussy may be used by some as part of their everyday language. Those who engage in this behavior may not realize the extraordinary power these words have to render inferior and

dehumanize women and gay men (who are sometimes criticized for not fitting into society’s rigid definition of what it means to be a “real man”).

They may also say that everyone is free to express themselves in whatever way they so choose. However, it’s important to note that “along with the freedom of expression comes the responsibility to support community members’ right to live and work in an environment free from harassment and fear” (UNH 2007-08 Student Handbook, Policy on Harassment and Bias-Motivated Offenses).

2. Speak up about sexist behaviors and jokes. Sexist behaviors, including certain

jokes, promote the view that women are unintelligent sexual objects who are inferior to men. These ideas contribute to a culture where women are disrespected and violence against women is tolerated.

Tap into your sense of social responsibility and speak up when someone forwards you one of “those” emails.

3. Create climate of respect. If you take a moment to view certain magazines, posters, music and videos with a critical eye, you will find that they often depict women in a sexually degrading and/or abusive manner. Before you buy that magaSee EFFORT page 14

To put it succinctly this movie is dreadful.

It is not as bad as sex on the beach (the sand gets everywhere), yet one level below having a root canal with a Black and Decker.

While the film’s basic idea of being trapped between two fatal situations has potential, these situations and their execution are awfully flawed. However,

in this case, it’s not the screenwriter’s fault because it was based on his 2006 novel of the same name, but instead it’s a simple case of not translating well to the big screen. Who are we kidding? Of course it’s his fault; the plot is absurd and simple-minded.

Mayweather Steps into a New Ring

Floyd Mayweather made history on Sunday, March 30 when he stepped into a ring, but not the one most sports fans would expect. Mayweather participated at World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) Wrestlemania 24.

Mayweather squared off against the Big Show who weighs 440 pounds, as opposed to Mayweather’s 159 pounds.

The match had a lot of publicity by not only sports networks like ESPN, but also networks such as CNN. Both Mayweather and the Big Show actually appeared on Larry King Live to promote the epic showdown.

In front of a soldout crowd of over 74,000 people at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, Mayweather took on the Big Show in one of the most heavily hyped main events of the evening. While a lot of the match consisted of Mayweather

At one point in the match, the 440-pound Big Show stood on Mayweather’s chest and put all his weight on the 39-0 boxing champion. The end result was Mayweather beating the Big Show after Mayweather used some brass knuckles to take down the Big Show, and after 15 minutes of action the match was over.

tertainment business that is professional wrestling, Mayweather was very respectful of the business and replied "When you're not in the sport, you don't know how tough this entertainment sport is," Mayweather said. "A lot of it's entertainment, but a lot of it, you've got to be athletic. The falls, the bumps and bruises and stuff— it's brutal."

It was reported that Mayweather received $20 million to participate in the match, however it is still up in the air if that is in fact true or not.

In the opener, Breanne Gleason allowed just one run in a completegame effort but the offense could not tally a run in her defense as she was a hard-luck loser.

2008 Threatens Gamers’ Wallets

from RTS to FirstPerson Shooters (FPS). There are two games that look absolutely amazing; both in the realm of visual graphics as well as game play overall.

Both of these selections are sequels, and both are expanding the genres in which they represent.

First, we have the Tom Clancy thrill game, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. In Vegas 2, you play as a member of an elite SWATlike team working in the Vegas metro area.

Combating everything from deranged gamblers to terrorists of all origins, you need to keep the slots safe for the thousands of old people and families flocking to Vegas every year! Vegas 2 will be available for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Another great title to look for, slated for a second half release date is Grand Theft Auto IV. For a Grand Theft game, the graphics are unparalleled. Overall, the game play will be similar…you’re a thug, in Liberty City, which looks surprisingly like NYC, and you need to make a name for yourself.

Throw in a couple ethnic ties to the Russian or Italian mobs, or make culturally diverse characters, and you’ve got yourself a game. For the fans of this particular genre of FPS type, it should be something that

those players will be pleased with.

My final overall genre review is sports. Now for me, and most gamers that I associate with (the ones worth their salt), sports games are both an oxymoron and not technically a genre. Sports games are…well…just sad.

Now, I’m not saying that they don’t have a massive following, but any gamer who really calls himself a “hardcore” gamer, doesn’t typically play such games as Madden or NCAA Football. These two titles will be sure to sell in high volume numbers, as always, and will probably have new features that will excite and enthrall the gamers who play them…whatever. As a Patriots fan, it will be nice to see Peyton Manning on the Madden ’09 cover, especially with the infamous Madden curse.

I know that I said I would show you six games…well, I lied.

I’m going to showcase seven. The last three are my top picks for 2008 when it comes to multi-platform games. These are the games that will cause me to be there, sitting outside Gamestop at 5:00 a.m., waiting for them to be unveiled… yeah, I’m serious.

My first pick is actually the game coming out the earliest. Most movie games, not to mention superhero

games, have sucked… hard. But the fact is, the video game version of the upcoming movie Ironman, looks amazing. Graphically, it is beyond amazing. The voice acting looks, or sounds rather, very good, and the close relationship between the game makers and Marvel comics is widely publicized.

This game looks as amazing as the movie, and is slated to release around a similar timeframe in May. The next game I will be drooling over in the coming year will be an FPS which, if you know me, isn’t my greatest forte.

However, it is based on a game that I truly love: Command & Conquer.

Tiberium follows a young marine through his adventures during the third Tiberium War, set in the time of the Command & Conquer 3 game. Mixing typical first-person shooter game play, along with smart AI members of your squad and support elements, the game looks extremely promising. It mixes elements of many different games that make it look beyond irresistible, including: Halo, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty 4. It is going to be one of those games that causes severe drop in GPA…a gamer’s enemy since the debut of the Nintendo.

The final game I will be previewing is something that is by far my top pick for the

entire year. I know for a fact that not all the gamers out there will agree with me on this pick, but that is okay… they have the right to their own opinion. I can’t help it if their opinion is wrong. Anyway, my final pick is a new Star Wars game coming out, Force Unleashed. In this game, you play Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, who goes out and does his dirty work in many cases. The teaser trailer was enough for me to want this, when the apprentice pulls a Star Destroyer from space and drags it across a city…using the Force! How freaking cool is that?!?! I honestly can’t wait for this game. Game play looks amazing, and the options, when it comes to using your powers and such, look revolutionary. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one. Knowing me, you’ll get a full report when it comes out…if I can ever get off my 360 to write a review…

South American Adventure Fails to Thrill

this isn’t even the biggest travesty.

This film attempts to depict the vines, which cover the temple as the more serious threat to the group of friends, however, the natives surrounding the temple are in fact the more dangerous antagonists as they will stop at nothing to prevent the spread of the vine. This poses a few problems with the film as it strangely focuses on the less dangerous aspect, the vines.

While the vines fail at providing the film’s horror element, the flowers, which grow from the vines, are more ridiculous than scary, instantly pulling the audience out of the film, leaving you to wonder what film school dropout thought this was a good idea. The flowers become the most idiotic and unintentionally funny plot device that has ever been put to film. They aren’t funny enough to be in a comedy and by far too outlandish to be in any legitimate horror film.

The acting in The Ruins, with the exception of Jonathan Tucker, was abysmal.

Not one of the characters was able to develop any sympathy within the audience including the few who should have. Instead, the audience feels much like the natives; watching and waiting for the irritating group to die, and the sooner the better.

However, there is one needle in the haystack of absurdities and horrific choices made during this film, which are the special effects. The Ruins does have some blood and gore and these scenes are actually done quite well.

The grotesque deaths are very realistic and seem out of place as the film manages to fail on all other levels.

However, it is possible that the majority of its budget was spent on a veteran special effects team with discounts on all other aspects.

Bottom line…this film is an atrocity and makes us sad to know that more people than the two of us actually paid to see it in the theater. And just so we can sleep at night, we have convinced ourselves that the other 100 or so people with us in the theater were sent to review the film as well. If you have not noticed already, during this review we found it very hard to depict our true feelings on how bad this film actually was without sounding pretentious as well as using an abundance of profanity. We hope that by now we have convinced you, the reader, not to go see The Ruins, but if you have friends who still want to see it, lock them in their dorm rooms, duct tape them to the ceiling, or take their car keys. Friends don’t let friends see The Ruins.
