Recent thefts on campus leave Campus Police searching for the culprit.

W

hile progress has been made, the investigation of the elec-

tronic thefts from Buckman, Dodds and Harugari Halls remains active as Chief of Police Mark DeLieto and Assistant Chief of Police Donald Parker search for the suspect’s identity.

An email explaining the thefts was sent out by Parker on Friday,

March 21, to the University of New Haven community with an attached surveillance image of the possible suspect (pictured above).

They asked that anyone who could identify the person in the image, or if anyone has seen the person on campus, to please contact Campus

Police at 203-932-7014.

The investigation is currently ongoing and no exact identification has been made from the surveillance photo; however DeLieto said “We will ID him.”

DeLieto has no doubt that the person who committed the thefts

will be found, and said the investigation is by no means a lost cause.

“We just need a positive ID by name to be made, and right now all we have is that it ‘looks like’…

[Someone].”

ob Girard and Kristina Gilbertie, the hosts of the WNHU’s Friday afternoon show Psych Word, seem as though they’ve known each other forever. Girard and Gilbertie are drug and alcohol counselors who create a fun, fresh atmosphere for their radio show, inviting their listeners in and creating a conversational tone. Since

the start of their show in February 2014, they have been featured in the newest edition of “New Haven Living” magazine.

Psych Word, which airs live each Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WNHU 88.7, covers a range of topics including mental health, current events, and overall wellness with a little humor and sarcasm mixed in.

Girard is currently a masters student at the University of Connecticut, and the creator of the show and its name. He said he gave the show its name because he felt it encompassed the content—psychology and mental health—and

also because he liked the play on words.

“I like that it sounds like psych ward, because a lot times when you’re listening to us, you’re like ‘What? They are nuts!’” he adds, “I kind of go off the deep end sometimes.”

Each show has a theme, and Girard and Gilbertie often have guests that correspond to their themes. Guests have ranged from veterans and pin-up girls—women who make calendars to raise money for veterans—to health and

“Fangirls Don’t Exist” and how women are treated in the music industry

Delta Chi’s Associate Members Hold Fundraising Events

On Wed., March 26, 2014, the Associate Members of the Delta Chi Fraternity hosted a Rice Krispie Treat and hot chocolate bake sale.

The purpose of this bake sale was to raise enough money to fund any future events without having to take out of the chapter’s funds.

The bake sale was conducted in Soundview, in Associate Member Nate Malon’s room, where the rest of the Associate Member class worked together to cook the food and manage the Facebook page that was created to place orders. The Associate Members also worked together to coordinate which members would

deliver which orders.

To promote the event the associate members created a Facebook group from which they could add anyone on their friends list to participate, as well as using word of mouth. The event itself was funded by the Associate Members with some supply assistance from the brothers of Delta Chi. Over the course of the night, numerous orders were placed and delivered, and the event was a huge success, turning in a profit of over $200.

The money raised can now be used to fund other events on campus or community service events, such as the West Haven Beach cleanup with SMILE that took place on March 29, 2014.

During this event, Delta Chi, and its Associate Members along with SMILE, cleaned up a local beach

in New Haven, picking up trash such as cigarette butts, old wrappers and plastic bottles. The cleanup took approximately an hour to complete, and by the time it was done, the beach was crystal clean and ready for the coming spring weather.

Future fundraiser events like this are in the process of being planned. This fundraiser was a fun and effective way of raising money, and also a good business learning tool as the Associate Members had to consider variables such as costs versus profits, transportation, timing, advertising, product quality and much more.

Overall, the Rice Krispie Treat and hot chocolate fundraiser was a successful and fun learning experience.

Psych Word

As March came to a close, so did Women’s History Month with a panel discussion on women and their role in the music industry.

The Women’s History Month events committee, run under Wanda Tyler, put on an intimate discussion with two panelists, moderated by student Cassidy Burt.

The panelists included University of New Haven professor Meryl Sole, and front woman of the band Candy Hearts, Mariel Loveland. The two women gave insight on their experiences in the industry where male dominated situations can feel overwhelming.

Sole has her doctorate in Music and Music Education from Columbia University as well as two Masters Degrees; one in Music Education from Columbia University and one in French Horn Performance from Boston University. Prior to teaching at UNH, she taught brass, music theory, music history and appreciation at Adelphi University in New York. Along with teaching, she also does research on music and its effect on toddlers, and still freelances as a French horn player with local symphonies and performance groups such as the National Opera Center and the Cosmopolitan Symphony.

Loveland came out of school with a major in creative writing and a minor in song writing before interning in the music industry and working on a DIY label. She

“We try to stick to a topic each show, but sometimes we get sidetracked,” Girard said. “Sometimes our callers will take us in a different direction.”

Girard explained one of the most popular segments of their show is Rant of the Day, which is where callers are able to call in from 3:10 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. with their “Rant of the Day.” Gilbertie, who is also lead singer of the bands Sister Funk and Run Jenny, said

that getting listeners involved is one of her favorite parts of being on the radio.

“I love being interactive and getting people involved, and we love getting callers to give us their point of view.”

WNHU is the University of New Haven’s noncommercial, official FCClicensed FM radio station, which broadcasts live from the station, located in the basement of Maxcy Hall.

“I knew that WNHU had been the number one college radio station for years, and I knew that I wanted to try to

get a show on the station,” Girard said. “When we got the offer for a live show Friday during drive time, it was like the perfect recipe.”

Girard and Gilbertie stay connected with their listeners through many social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and they even have their own website, psychword.com, where listeners can go to share thoughts, opinions and comments of the show.

While there was a lot of discussion about negative experiences, it was an open forum full of solutions to improve. When asked for advice to give the women in the room, confidence and self-esteem were impressed upon heavily. “It’s all about how you carry yourself, whatever the kind of person you are, own it, ” Loveland stressed.

Sole supported the idea by telling girls, “Have the drive to work your butt off for what you want.” However, both felt that positive role models in the industry were necessary for increased female success. “Students need to see positive images of strong female teachers for women to aspire to,” Sole said.

Loveland also interjected that there needs to be “bad” role models too. “There need to be some girls that aren’t that great at succeeding.

There are male role models who are quirky and charming, but when a girl sees success, they see Beyoncé success. We need some more quirky, charming girls that aren’t perfect!”

As for the men? “Be supportive of your female friends,” Loveland advises, “treat them as an equal, but also understand that women are different.” Sole also mentioned not judging a book by its cover. “Never underestimate the women you’re surrounded by, you might not know just how much they’re capable of.”

went on to form the band Candy Hearts, working with New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert on his imprint label Violently Happy Records to produce their EP The Best Ways to Disappear. She shared the love of French horn as well, though noting she was “forever last chair” as well as a placeholder with her mellophone in the marching band.

In a classical setting, Sole found it commonplace to be the only female on her instrument, or even in the entire brass section. At times, she would walk into auditions and wouldn’t be given more than three seconds nefore being thanked for her time. “Being a female brass is really tough,” she added.

In the punk rock scene, Loveland found one of her biggest struggles was being taken seriously. Her first band kicked her out because having a female lead “wasn’t good for their image” and to this day has issues at times getting on stage at her own shows. “The Rock scene expects (girls) to be with the band, not in the band,” she explained. “You’re under a microscope that others are not, judged for things that a man might not. A lot of the problems I have are because I have a female body.”

Some examples brought up in this respect were the idea of promiscuity; that a women who sleeps around is viewed as trashy, while a man might get a high five from his buddies. Sole noted a double standard that she faces as a woman with a family, “A man is not immediately seen as a father, but a woman is immediately seen

partments including Orange PD and West Haven PD have gotten involved with the investigation in attempts to make a positive identification. DeLieto and Parker said that the suspect is neither a student nor a member of the UNH Campus. They believe the suspect may be a person on parole, and his parole office has been contacted. As of now the suspect is considered a “person of interest.”

The surveillance photo was taken in Harugari hall, where a single desktop computer belonging to the university was stolen. DeLeito believes this particular theft was planned because the items were carried away in box by the suspect. “It was an intentional act,” he said.

The thefts from the other campus buildings were a combination of electronic items including cell phones and laptops. The thefts in Buckman occurred a week prior to the theft from Harugari, but there is no evidence that connects the two occurrences.

“Thefts are not generally high on this campus, and most that do happen are “crimes of opportunity,” said DeLieto and Parker. “Either students are naïve or forget-

ful, but out of the thefts that do occur, a lot are seen in the library because students get up to go get lunch and leave their belongings behind and unattended.”

The librarians are very strict when it comes to unattended belongings and leave notices on people’s computers and belongings that are left unattended; however DeLieto and Parker explained this situation makes a criminal out of someone not normally one, because when items are sitting around unattended for a long time it is likely that someone will just come by and pick them up. “Leaving items unattended is the biggest nation-wide campus crime,” Parker said. The officers strongly recommend students be careful with their personal items. “It is amazing how many items we get turned into lost and found here in Campus Police.

Students forget about them, and we try, but it is hard to find the owners – you’d be surprised,” said DeLieto and Parker.

Parker explained the university has an educational program called Stay Safe 360 to prevent these kinds of crimes. According to the UNH website, the program features a series of useful

videos that provide practical information and advice for situations students face every day. To access these videos students can visit insideUNH and find 360 Stay Safe under the ‘Employee’ tab.

The thefts that have been reported appear to be random and no patterns of common, or increased, occurrences have been seen.

However, Harugari experienced a book theft a couple years ago like this one, where high-end textbooks were stolen by a non-campus member to be sold. The thief was found and ordered to make restitution to the campus for the crime he had committed, and it is because of this that DeLieto is confident in finding the suspect involved in the current electronic thefts, and believes it is indeed not a lost cause.

“This may seem like it happened a while ago, but the process takes time,” said DeLieto. After an ID can finally be made, an arrest warrant will be made; however, the officers explained it is a lengthy process. If and when the suspect is arrested for the thefts, it is ultimately up to the courts to decide what happens next, and unlike the book thefts, a restitution option is not always the case.

Thirteen Countries, One Celebration— The 2014 International Festival

ver seven hundred international students are currently studying at the University of New Haven; that’s nearly 1/6 of the total student population, undergraduate and graduate students included.

This past year, events such as Chinese Moon Festival, Diwali Festival and the Chinese New Year Celebration have succeeded in bringing culture to students who seek it out. However, the annual International Festival is a celebration of cultures on a larger scale; it is something students prepare for months in advance. In the beginning of spring semester, an email is sent out to students asking if anyone wishes to represent a country for the festival. Students gather to decide what their display will look like, what food to get and whether they wish to perform. This event isn’t solely catered to university students; in fact, many outside friends, family members and interested people from the community came to the festival.

The 34th annual International Festival was held on Sat., April 5, at North Campus. As one walked into the Charger Gymnasium, there were booths on the left and right sides with tables in the middle, and a stage straight ahead on the far end. Closest to the entrance was China’s table. Students talked to the long line of people awaiting food, and pointed out pictures with China’s landmarks.

Right next to China was Taiwan’s table, adorned with posters, books, pictures, maps, slideshows and cultural artifacts including woodwork and puppets. The ever-popular bubble tea was being given out and was finished rather quickly.

After Taiwan was Haiti’s table with pictures laid out on one side and food on the other. This presentation was prepared by some of the Caribbean Student Association’s members who said “Haiti isn’t represented on campus so we wanted to represent them this year.”

Near Haiti was the table of the islands of Trinidad and

Tobago. Graduate student Melissa Gitens said how there is a nonprofit organization for this culture which her father created. The Trinbago American Association of Southern Connecticut holds events in the area to promote awareness of the land. Member of the Association, Sharon, described the Carnival celebrations in the country as “a party for two days in the street, and bands can have up to 5,000 people.”

Gitens then pointed to an oil drum cut in half (otherwise known as the “steel pan”), the only instrument created in the twenty-first century. Sharon also said how much of the traditional snacks and dried fruits are preserved. “[We have] no packaged food, we eat fruit as our snacks.”

After Trinidad and Tobago was Iraq’s table. Female students were donned in traditional Kurdish outfits and it was explained that Kurds are the second highest population of people in Iraq, next to the Arabs, and before the Turks of Turkmenistan.

Their food was ordered from a restaurant downtown named Aladdin Crown Pizza.

Finally, there was Italy’s table, filled with Global Ambassadors and students that have studied abroad, along with photographs of their experience. They served lasagna and gelato. Freshman Jack Rothstein said, “My first college experience was in Italy. I feel like I’m doing better here because I studied abroad.”

Further into the gymnasium were booths of seven more countries. First came India with dozens of students donned in traditional clothing. Their table featured multiple instruments, including a harmonium, the base for all Indian music. This table got their food from Tandu restaurant, also in downtown New Haven.

Next was Ethiopia’s table, with freshman undergrad, Naomi, dressed in a traditional Habesha dress. She explained how Amharic is the national language and proceeded to write people’s names in this script. Most of the artwork is cloth based; however, writing on leather is popular as well. Their food was ordered from Ethiopian restaurant Lalibela in downtown New Haven.

After Ethiopia was Germany’s table with pretzels, muesli and bauernbrot breads, apple and cherry strudel. Marisa Oschmann, new to the university from Germany this semester, ran the table. When asked what she thought of the U.S., Os-

chmann said, “Our cultures are pretty similar now. It was my dream to come here.”

Next to Germany’s table was Iran’s with artwork and instruments. Two instruments were the Taar, part of the string family and resembling a guitar, and Tonbak, a single drum. Paintings, cloth work, poetry and metal artworks were laid out on the table as well.

Afterwards was the U.S.’s table, with food including macaroni and cheese and pulled pork.

Then came Egypt’s table with photographs, artwork with hieroglyphs and plenty of traditional food.

Last but not least on the left side, were Saudi Arabia’s tables, one section with food and another for henna tattoos. Their presentation included dozens of photographs, maps and brochures, as well as many pastries.

Around 6 p.m, winners of food and displays were announced. Italy won Best Dessert for their gelato, India won Best Appetizer for their samosas, and Haiti won Best Entrée for their meat and vegetable combo, rice and beans, and plantains.

by China, and Best Cultural Presentation went to both Taiwan and India.

Then the performance hosted by Jason An and Shican Li began. First up was a duo representing Argentina who danced the salsa.

at the moon, drinking wine, and thinking about you.”

Next, Indian students danced to a medley of Indian music for a wildly cheering crowd. The females’ ornate costumes created a colourful and appealing sight that won them Best Visual Appeal.

Next performed Fouad, representing Iran, on his two instruments—the taar and the tonbak. Fouad’s unique style on both instruments won him Most Original.

To close the show, senior David Janovsky represented Ireland through his Irish step-dancing and won Best in Show.

Although there were 13 distinct countries to see, everyone gathered for the same purpose—to eat, learn, and celebrate the diversity of the university. As UNH announced its plans to double their amount of students going abroad (the first university in Connecticut to do so), a stronger presence of cultural awareness arose on campus.

Josh Low, President of the International Students Association, helped plan the festival in conjunction with the International Services Office, and Karima Jackson.

“This year we had more performances than last year and some different countries showcased such as Haiti and Italy,” he said. “Though it was not as packed as last year, the event was well received by the attendees and it was another wonderful International Festival.”

Best April fool’s prank of the decade

––––––––––––––––––––– As I’m on a long-distance call with my parents, we discuss and share all the hilarious reactions to Turkish Officials blaming the power outage during election night on a cat. The headline at Huffington Post for the story is, “Turkish Official Blames Election Night Power Outages On A Cat.” Who can take that seriously?

I couldn’t keep quiet at the title alone.

The electrical blackout spiraled the country that firmly believes in the possibility

of change. Following that, officials had the audacity to hold an interfering cat liable. Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said on April 1, “A cat entered a power distribution unit. It was the cause of the blackout and it’s not the first time that it has happened.”

The BBC listed the four top April Fools Day trends, of which one was Yildiz’s comment. As bizarre as it is to announce this on April fool’s and expecting listeners to believe it, he did.

Congratulations, we had a great laugh at the comments and pictures accompanied by them.

How fair can an election be if ballot boxes suspiciously disappear, are found burnt, and there are inconsistencies among the boxes and report sheets as well as in the computerization process? Fraud seems to be the accurate clarification. Many Turks, including myself, call for a recount. Opposition parties deposited to the

higher election board (YSK) more than 2,000 appeals to recount suspicious boxes.

In all seriousness, who can take Turkey’s authority figures seriously anymore?

Blocking Twitter and YouTube in a so-called democratic country takes integrity away as it is (let alone granting access again after a two-week ban). Corruption sweeps across parliament would have crossed the line, you’d think. General tremble in the Erdogan circle would’ve been it. Along with the results of the local election everyone seems to be in disbelief.

Erdogan’s political party is crumbling apart and serving nothing but smelly, rotten fish to its followers.

There’s no trust to rely on, and he will be made fun of and revolted against until he understands the meaning of respect, transparency and democracy.

Why joining Greek life was the best decision I’ve made yet

ot unlike many sorority girls before me, I came into my freshman year with a negative view of sororities and fraternities. All of my preconceived notions of Greek life were based off of what the media had been feeding me since I was old enough to watch an American Pie movie. That, coupled with the occasional horror story featured on the nightly news about hazing gone wrong, was more than enough to keep me far away from anything emblazoned with a letter from the Greek alphabet.

But throughout my first year of college, I saw how the sisters and brothers on campus interacted and supported one another, and so, after a horrible freshman year, which left me friendless, alone and mildly depressed, I decided going out for a sorority would be my top priority for the fall semester of my sophomore year.

I was nervous, apprehensive and completely in the dark with what to expect from the process, but as it turns out, I had nothing to worry about. From the very first night I spent with the

girls I now call sisters, I knew I had found my place, and since then, I’ve never been happier.

What they tell you in movies? Totally not true. Movies, television shows and even books are only exaggerated versions of the social aspects of sororities and fraternities—and some of what they feed us is not true, not even in the slightest. I’ve been a part of my sorority for almost two semesters, and not once have I experienced even one second of hazing. I’ve never been made to do anything that has made me feel uncomfortable in any way, shape or form. The media does a good job of giving Greeks a bad name, and forgets to highlight all the things that a sorority or fraternity actually consists of.

What the media fails to mention is the ample community service done by the brothers and sisters of fraternities and sororities, the strong bonds built between the members of the organizations and the leadership and networking opportunities presented.

Most importantly, the media can’t convey, not even in the slightest, what it’s like to look at a group of people and feel immediate support, love, admiration and pride.

I’ve had the best year of my life, and that’s saying something considering that the few bad things that have happened to me during this year have been pretty devastating. Without my sorority, I’d be exactly where I was last year—in my dorm room, sad and all alone, this time without even my thenboyfriend.

Without the support of my

sisters, I would have missed out on some amazing opportunities and people. Joining a Greek organization is more than a few pairs of pretty letters on the front of a t-shirt or going to parties. Joining a Greek organization means always having someone to fall back on, to rely on, and to be there for you. It means finding a home away from home. It means becoming the best version of you that you can possibly be.

Joining a sorority was, hands down, the best decision I’ve made thus far in my collegiate career, and that’s because it’s helped me so much in every other aspect of it. Being apart of an organization as influential as my sorority has made me strive to be the best I can be.

I try harder in my classes, because I want to make my sisters proud. My endeavors with extracurricular activities and community services have doubled since recruitment week. I’ve become more comfortable in social and professional situations because I know I have people in my corner rooting for me. Even my writing has become better because I know I will always have sisters who will support and read my work.

I wear my letters with pride because, to me, they mean so much more than just a phi and two sigma’s.

My letters represent an organization that has been around for a century, the ladies who have given me the confidence to be the person I am today, and a promise to my sisters and to myself to be the best I can possibly be. I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.

Spring is here— April Fools

I’ts 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning, March 31. I peacefully arise from my slumber to look outside my window to find white puffs falling from the sky. I rub my eyes a little and then pinch myself to make sure I was not still sleeping. To my despair, it was snowing. Blizzarding, in fact. Hail and wind included.

I rapidly checked my email in search of something saying my 9:25 lab was cancelled. Instead, I get an email saying “Hey we know it’s really dangerous outside so be careful, but class is still on so good luck…may the odds be ever in your favor!” Okay UNH. Okay.

I stomp around my apartment like a toddler while making breakfast and getting ready for class—which I can’t skip. I anally check my email hoping for a godsend telling me morning classes are cancelled. I stare out the

window, defeated, watching the white puffs fall in clumps from the grey sky, begging it to be a downpour instead.

My parents were just up for the weekend so I gave them my winter jacket, scarves, hats, and gloves— naively thinking it was supposed to be spring and all. As 9:15 approached, I geared up for what would be a terrible walk across campus, to the building behind Bethel Hall—where my lab is held. I mentally prepared myself to brace the storm and remember to walk carefully. Upon my first step outside my dorm, I slid. I was pelted with giant clumps of snow. The shoveling crew just got out there so nothing was shoveled yet. I was amidst a complete winter wonderland.

When I got to my first set of stairs, I clung for life to the railing as I climbed each step slowly. I slid a couple more times and watched many others struggle around campus. It was not until I got to Campbell Street where I actually fell. Covered in snow, pissed off and annoyed, I entered my class to find only like eight out of the 20 students show up.

A majority of them are commuters and therefore could not even get to the school. The two hills on campus were blocked off

by police cars! The shuttles from off-campus housing stopped at Shoprite and made the students walk the rest of the way. After talking to multiple people later on, I heard that they, too, had difficulty walking around campus and many fell as well. It was Monday morning madness.

The snow had stopped by 11 a.m. and by the afternoon, most of it was melted (which I attribute to global warming). It was completely unexpected and it was absolutely ridiculous that the school did not cancel morning classes. Was it because we missed so much before?

Is the risk of students falling and car accidents of professors and commuters not as important? All they had to do was cancel classes that started before 11 a.m. If they checked the weather beforehand and saw the storm was actually going to affect us, then the shoveling crew could have been out there earlier and had the sidewalks done for when we actually had to use them! All in all, Monday morning sucked.

I was an angry individual that day and was not happy until it the sun was shining and actually felt like spring again! *As a side note, if it snows one more time, I am quitting the semester and moving to Fiji.

Is there really no such thing as a stupid question?

The relationship between students and professors goes both ways; students should be respectful of their professors and professors should be respectful of their students.

As a science major, I have come across some great professors who intently care about students’ success and learning, and others who are not so great.

When you enter an intensive science course, it is already very intimidating because you are already expecting not to do well and are praying just to pass. So for these classes, I try to take the most recommended professor. This doesn’t always happen, because sometimes, only one professor teaches the course or the section you wanted to take was full by the time you finally got through your 6 a.m. registration process after the website crashed three times. This not only goes for science

majors, this goes for all majors and courses; I am just speaking out of experience.

Here at UNH, not all professors are the best—lets be real, there are many terrible professors. Whether they really care and just can’t get the information across to the students clearly because of the content, or they can’t get information out clearly because of their accents or simply because they don’t care and believe we are idiotic college students who don’t care and don’t try or want to learn so they don’t care either, a bad professor is a bad professor.

I personally have experienced a little bit of everything throughout the first half of my college career, and I appreciate professors who care to get to know your name and care to make sure you understand the information. These professors are the ones who understand that we have a lot of other things to work on so they try not to give a terrible amount of outside class work. I understand when a professor has a hard time getting across to their students for whatever reason.

My biggest pet peeve is when a professor talks down to you, ultimately making you feel stupid, because you don’t understand the information or the purpose of something. I was always taught “no question is stu-

pid,” but in recent classes, I find that statement false.

I’m afraid to ask a question because my professor may think that I don’t have the intelligence to be in the class or may answer in a demeaning way, making me feel more stupid than I already do. Not wanting to ask questions because I feel this way negatively affects my learning, because then I don’t understand the information to my fullest ability.

This has occurred a lot in my labs, probably because it’s putting your lecture knowledge in use, and this is difficult, but as a professor, it is his or her job to guide you and help you understand the material; not just to supervise you.

It’s just frustrating because I do pay to go here and I don’t think that every professor does their job to their fullest ability, yet I’m expected to do my job to my fullest ability. Of course I try my hardest because, like every college student, I want that A. However, no matter how terrible a professor may be, I still feel that, as a student, I should give them respect because they are giving me my grade, after all. That sounds terrible to say, but its true; students often give up their personal dignity for a good grade in a class. GPA is everything in college.

Beginning the transition process

The transition process for new E-Boards is one of the most common issues that RSOs have. If you’re an executive leaving your position after this year, make sure to begin meeting with the incoming executive as soon as you’re elected/appointed. Don’t just read the job description in your constitution, also discuss issues that have come up over the year, areas that need to be addressed and things that you wish you had done differently.

DJ Anski: The Pulse of SigGLO

he brothers of Sigma Chi put on their stunning finale to Derby Days this past Friday with their SigGLO event. The week of events, ranging from banner designing and derby hat swiping to fear factor and minute to win it challenges, was all to support their philanthropic

efforts towards the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. The SigGLO event a “thank you” to the University of New Haven community for their continued support of the Sigma Chi fraternity as they complete their fifth recognized year on campus.

“I’ve always been into music, I know everyone always

says that. My family’s been into music for a long time, honestly I wanted to interact with music on a much deeper level than just listening to it. Put my hands in it and create new things with existing content. That’s what really drew me into DJing,” said DJ Anski, whose career skyrocketed in less than a

year. Anski was soon flying across the country like the DJ “Rock Stars” he had once been idolizing.

Anski truly makes sure he has his hands in everything, running the business Fundraver, which offers more than just a performer, but an experience. In a time where EDM is so often paired in

the minds of parents with danger and drugs, Fundraver offers “Parties for the Common Good” priding themselves on a safe and positive environment and a way for organizations to use it as not only an event, but a fundraising effort, making this the perfect way to end Derby Days.

While this event has been in the works for a while to be a celebration in the residential quad, threats of rain changed the venue to the German Club barely a day before the event.

Fundraver’s flexible approach, however, made this no struggle at all. “It doesn’t See DJ page 8

Dan + Shay: Where It All Began Album A review of this country duo’s debut album, Where It All Began, which released on April 1.

_____________________ Dan and Shay is an American country duo composed of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney. The duo is signed to Warner Bros. Records Nashville. They released their debut album, Where It All Began, April 1, 2014, and will also be releasing their debut single, “19 You + Me.” This is what I had to say about their new album: “Show You Off:” It was a great way to start off their album. This song has a lot of potential and really gives you a positive vibe.

“Stop Drop + Roll:” There is a strong sense of energy while listening to this song.

It has a soothing kind of melody to the way the music

is being played.

“19 You + Me:” This song sets back a little and has a slower tempo. The lyrics are incredible and the meaning’s filled with affection.

“What You Do To Me:” As I listened to this, I had to listen carefully at certain parts.

They were very touching.

“Can’t Say No:” This song has a slower pace and you’re able to let the music flow to the beat of the song. I feel as if this song fits well as a slow tempo with the words or the lyrics.

“First Time Feeling:” We all know that first time feeling you get with the one who you can do everything with and feel magical inside.

The lyrics to this song are incredible and touch your heart.

“Nothin’ Like You:” When you see that other person

and you feel that they are perfect and no one can be better. That person who just takes your breath away and you don’t know what to say.

“Somewhere Only We Know:” At one point in the song, the tempo gets fast and then suddenly drops and gets slower. I thought it was a great change within the song.

“Parking Brake:” As I started this song, I felt the rhythm of the song making me want to move to the melody.

“I Heard Goodbye:” This is one of their slower songs, and it gets very intimate as they say goodbye to someone special to them. You can feel the sadness by the way Dan and Shay sing the lyrics.

“Party Girl:” Another slow and steady song, saying how

there is that girl they see who is someone who likes to have fun. She is the only one you think about.

“Close Your Eyes:” The song portrays how you just

want to imagine how life would be with that special someone, when it’s just you and them. There is nothing to worry about in life; just the two of you.

You don’t want to miss these guys in action, so if you have the chance to catch them at a show, I suggest you go.

DJ Anski: The Pulse of SigGLO Flagship LIVE @ The Space

After sitting down to have a conversation with the band Flagship from Charlotte, NC, I realized that these guys were different from all the rest; in fact, I can honestly say they were the most personable, and charismatic group I have ever had the pleasure to sit down with.

When I first arrived at the venue three hours before their set, I expected them to be sleeping or eating and uninterested in starting our interview. Not to my surprise they were doing just that, sleeping and eating.

However, instead of being uninterested+, they invited my photographer, Courtney Kresge, and I into their tour van, offered us Oreo’s and woke up eager to answer my questions.

The band consists of Drake Margolnick, Grant Harding, Matthew Padgett, Michael Finster, and Christopher Comfort. Once we were able to gather all of the band mates, because some were exploring the wooded area around The Space in Hamden, Conn., we moved into the venue to start the interview. Knowing that the

band was a merge of two different groups, I had to ask how they formed into one, and Padgett was quick to answer. “There used to be two,” he began like he was telling us a bedtime story, “there was Campbell the Band and Flagship Brigade.”

“I came up with the idea of Flagship forever ago,” said Margolnick. “I just really liked the word and what it stood for.”

“Drake went solo after the other two bands fizzled out, and we all supported that.

Joining him on his journey, we felt inspired. It was incredible, and soon we were just…Flagship.”

The band is currently on the “Three of Clubs” tour, which Finster explained to me, “It’s been a long-standing tradition where three bands are asked to go on a tour together. It’s the same three bands for the entire length of the tour, and we switch up the order we play in depending on the city.

We get along so well with the other bands, it’s really cool, but there are some drawbacks,” he said, “I need to be able to be alone, that’s just the type of person I am.

Therefore, never having that option becomes difficult at times.”

“Snoring,” Padgett and

Margolnick said simultaneously. “Some people just snore so loud, it’s difficult to sleep when we’re actually able to,” Padgett finished.

“And alcohol,” Harding laughed. “We can never afford alcohol.” I actually felt like I was in the middle of a Saturday Night Live skit, it was beyond fun to spew out questions to these guys.

It was definitely a challenge to get a general consensus from the group.

They all have different songs that mean the most to them, and different influences both musically and personally, but I was able to get them to agree on one thing. “We’re all really influenced by The National, and Radiohead,” said Padgett, “and my boys here in Flagship, they influence me a lot.”

I have never met a more humble and brother-like group of guys with such a story to tell. Their sheer personalities make their music that much more desirable, and I feel so lucky to have gotten the chance to sit down with them and chat about the methods behind their musical madness. This is definitely a band to watch out for in the months to come!

change the essence of it, everyone is coming out to dance and have a good time.

It might change the technology aspect of it a little bit, but we come to it knowing that we might need to be flexible; we try to prepare for that as much as possible,” Anski explained. “In [the German Club] we have a flat stage where as outside we knew we were going to have to build a structure to re-project the sound. It’s all about planning ahead of time. The technology is a small aspect of it; people are going to have a good time no matter what.”

With the atmosphere all set up, the focus shifts to the music. When asked how he prepares for a show musically, he offered a very investigative approach. “I do quite a bit of research of where I’m going to be going, especially with schools.

There’s a similar age demographic to myself so I know what they grew up listening to, I know what I want to drop in and surprise people with. I try to stay into with what’s most popular in electronic dance music but I like to have that additional nostalgic element, drop in

some random Blink 182 loop or something. People get singing along and it gets them pumped up. I’m one of those people that’s out in the crowd so I know what people want.”

When asked how to get a dead crowd really going, Anski brings it right back to the nostalgia. “Even if I’m in the middle of a horrible train wreck mix, all the audio cuts out, something like the horn intro to Jump Around and everyone just loses it. Those 90’s jams always pump people up.”

Sitting down with Anski, it was very clear that he was different than most DJs out there. When I talked with him about it, he offered what makes him unique, “I think I go at it with a much different mindset; a lot of DJs are going at it because they just want to be famous, get the girls and the money out of it. I go at it because I’m personally passionate about it and the way I go at it is almost cunning in a business stance. I treat Fundraver and my DJ career as a company instead of me as a struggling DJ earning my chops. I had a different approach and that’s really what sets me apart. Having a more holistic view of the event.”

He even had some advice for up and coming DJs looking to turn their skills into a career. “Start being professional, develop a logo. It sounds silly to think about presenting yourself visually when music is all you want to do but having a good logo, website, information and mixes online is going to make yourself visible. I found opening DJs for this event by researching online and looking at what they had to offer. Start being creative with what you’re doing, build a fan base because they are going to carry you where you want to go.”

SigGLO was a huge success, bringing in big crowds despite the cold and rain outside. The winner of Derby Days was announced; “Talk Derby to Me,” defeating TeamREC by a margin of 150 points — the closest race in the history of UNH Derby Days.

Over $5,000 was raised for Huntsman Cancer Institute.

“Fundraver was awesome, they truly threw a great party” said TeamREC derby team member Mary Perucci, “and I’m so proud of what we all accomplished for this great cause!”

I

t’s never a bad sign when almost every critic who saw a prescreening preaches that the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie may even be better than the Avengers. That was about the only thing that could possibly add to my excitement of seeing my favorite Avenger back on the big screen again.

Was it really better than the Avengers? You can argue for or against it, but one thing is certain; this is the

best film we have seen in phase 2 and it just may be the best stand-alone Marvel film in the Avengers series.

This movie had everything: heart, tension, suspense and mind blowing action. This is everything you would expect Marvel to do to constantly step their game up to the next level.

Often times I praise the Marvel films for giving each stand-alone movie its unique feel to keep things interesting. I will say, this film is probably the most different

of all of the stand-alones thus far. It’s not nearly as comic bookish as we see in Iron-man, or as fantasy as we see in Thor. Captain America: The Winter Soldier grounds the characters in our reality and deals with issues that we do as a society in the real world.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is more like a political thriller than anything else. The film revolves around conspiracy, treason and high tension suspense, and the action is admirable.

This is easily the best hand to hand combat we have seen in any Marvel film.

In many ways, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is reminiscent of a Bruce Lee film the way fighting is choreographed.

Captain America played by Chris Evans gives us another great performance as a man trying to find his place in a new world. His chemistry with Black Widow played

by Scarlet Johansen is razor sharp and they have a genuine brother-sister feel.

The Winter Soldier himself, played by Sebastian Stan, is a bad ass. He is easily the best villain we have had next to Loki. He proposes a severe physical threat to Capt., and carries a dark, intimidating mysticism with his presence.

The addition of Falcon played by Anthony Mackey is welcomed, charming, and exciting. I find him reminiscent of Rhodes from Iron Man. For a film so heavy in plot it really delivers with its

character depth. This film is probably the most serious next to The Incredible Hulk, but humor can be found in a few places.

All in all, you are absolutely crazy if you don’t see this movie. Even if you aren’t a comic book film fan, you need to see this film. There are two after credit scenes, so make sure you stay long enough for both.

Postcards from Prato

O

ur last full month in Prato has started. It’s amazing how fast the time has flown by this semester.

This week was, like all others, fun and full of events the staff set up for us. On Monday,we had students come from another study abroad program located in Florence, instead just having our regular soccer game.

The students were from The University of Wisconsin Madison and they came to our field to play against UNH students. It was a lot of fun and a great way to mix it up and see other U.S. students studying close by.

Tuesday night we had conversation exchange again. It’s always a lot of fun to talk to the local Italian students and try to improve our skills. Some groups are teaching each other card games and even hanging out on other days of the week instead of just for conversation exchange. It’s a great way to learn about Prato from the people our age who live here. After conversation exchange this week, I went to a family dinner with a group of students. We got picked up at the school and went to the family’s house for an amazing home cooked meal. The house had a beautiful view of the mountains, so when we got there we walked around for a little bit just asking questions and seeing a completely different area of Prato. We had such a

great time eating and talking to the family and laughed so much. It was such an amazing experience.

There was no movie on Wednesday night this week, so instead we had a local beer and snack tasting. It was really interesting to get to taste different beers to see which went best with each snack; I never thought about how much it mattered what you eat with what you are drinking until I came to these tastings. After that was over, the school had arranged a Skype session with the campus back in Connecticut to answer any questions anyone had about registration— which was ex-

tremely helpful since all we have to rely on is email to figure everything out while being here.

On Thursday the finale of the card game tournament happened after our classes were over. The tournament has been going on for weeks, and there were four teams left, but only one could win. By the end of the night there was a winner and prizes were awarded. The excitement in the room was great; everyone really got into the game.

Unfortunately, the hike they had planned for Friday was cancelled because of the rain, but that didn’t stop them from getting every-

one together. They held a Ping-Pong tournament in the morning at the school and later a press conference for Prato Campus week coming up in May. The conferenec includes UNH, Monash University from Australia and PIN, a local Prato university.

There are different events and programs set up that include all of the schools and the community in Prato to get everyone involved. As it gets closer they are getting everyone hyped up for it.

We might only have a month left, but it will definitely be a fun filled one in Prato for all of us!

or the first time since joining the Northeast-10, the University of New Haven Chargers Women’s Lacrosse team are 10-0 to start the season.

On Wednesday, April 2, they had a tough road trip as they faced the number four Le Moyne Dolphins up in Syracuse, NY. At halftime, the Chargers found themselves trailing the Dolphins 6-2 at the end of the first half.

New Haven Chargers began the second half with a huge response, going on

a 5-0 run to take a one-goal lead.

The rest of the game continued with both teams trading punches, until Le Moyne’s Victoria Nies tied the game at 10 apiece with 7:11 minutes remaining.

What had been a high scoring second half slowed down for the next 6:30 minutes with neither team scor-

ing a goal. However, with 19 seconds remaining in the game, senior Nicole McKee scored her third goal of the game to give the Chargers a one-goal lead.

The Chargers preserved the lead and win the game 11-10.

On Saturday, April 5, the Chargers faced Saint Anselm who was undefeated and

receiving votes in the rankings.

Once again, the Chargers found themselves in a back and forth game. With 4:32 minutes left in the game, the Hawks took a one-goal lead; their first lead since the middle of the first half.

Senior Marissa Fisher scored to tie things up, and later, with nine seconds left

in the game, sophomore Courtney Ackland scored and put the Chargers on top.

Junior Kathryn Campbell won the next draw and scored one last goal in the final second to give UNH an 11-10 lead.

Chargers Overpower Saint Anselm in Twin Bill Sweep, 7-3 and 12-6 –––––––––––––––––––––

The University of New Haven baseball team got hits from 11 different players in a Northeast-10 doubleheader sweep of visiting Saint Anselm. The Chargers took the twin bill by scores of 7-3 and 12-6.

Following the sweep, New Haven improves to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in the NE10. The Hawks drop to 9-18 with a 3-7 conference mark.

As today’s doubleheader was originally set to be played in Manchester, Saint Anselm batted in the home half of each inning.

Game 1 Saint Anselm plated the day’s first run on a one-out double by Dan Lagasse before the Chargers got on the board in the top of the third.

Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) singled to start the frame and advanced into scoring position as Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) worked a walk. Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk)

dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over, and a Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) groundball to short allowed O’Reilly to race home. TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) added what would prove to be the game-winning RBI with a single to plate DeMorais and staked New Haven to a 2-1 advantage.

The Blue and Gold added to their lead in the fourth, started by a one-out double from Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton). The Chargers’ second baseman then swiped third and came home on DeMorais’ RBI base-knock.

New Haven would continue to build its cushion, loading the bases with no outs in the fifth. Riccio led off the stanza with a single, followed by a bunt single from Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./ Dumont) and an Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) walk. Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./ Pine Bush) delivered the big hit with a two-run single to extend the margin to 5-1.

After Joe Morin’s RBI single took a run off the New Haven lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers took it back in the top of the seventh. Cullen reached on a throwing error to begin the frame and advanced on Tammaro’s sacrifice bunt. A balk pushed him 90 feet farther, and Walraven brought him around to score with a sacrifice fly.

It was Morin who once again brought home a run for the Hawks on an RBI single in the last of the seventh, but the Chargers’ offense continued to click.

Back-to-back two-out doubles from Buckley and Collett in the top of the eighth notched another run to bring the score to its eventual final of 7-3.

Right-hander John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./ Kingston) started on the mound and earned his first win of the season. The senior worked the first six frames, scattering two earned runs on five hits, three walks and three wild pitches while striking out five.

Southpaw Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./ Branford) – the winning pitcher in yesterday’s nightcap against Saint Michael’s – pitched the seventh, and right-handers Lewicki and Buckley each hung a zero to complete the effort on the bump.

Walraven went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the opener, while Collett knocked in two runs. Riccio was 3-for-5 at the dish as a part of the Chargers’ 15-hit barrage.

Cullen had two stolen bases and Johnson also swiped a bag.

Game 2 The Chargers struck first in the second game, started by Johnson’s one-out single in the top of the first. After taking second on a wild pitch, he came around the score and a DeMorais double.

Saint Anselm would claim a brief advantage with two runs in the bottom of the frame, before New Haven broke the contest open with a 10-run flurry in the top of the third. Lewicki, Cullen and O’Reilly each had two RBI in the frame, with

Buckley, Collett, Walraven and DeMorais also driving in runs. The Chargers sent 15 runners to the plate, pounding nine hits and chasing Hawks’ starter Autrey Gates from the contest.

With the result all but decided, New Haven would also add a Walraven RBI as three Chargers’ hurlers made the sizeable margin stand up.

Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) went the first seven innings to record the win. The southpaw racked up 10 strikeouts while ceding two earned runs on nine hits and one walk. Taylor Hughes (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket / Bridgton Academy) worked a hitless, scoreless eighth,

and Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) finished off the 12-6 triumph.

Cullen and DeMorais were both 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, with Cullen also stealing a base.

Walraven, O’Reilly and Lewicki drove in two runs apiece in the second game, which saw 10 different Chargers notch a base-hit.

The Blue and Gold return to the diamond on Tuesday, visiting defending East Coast Conference champion Saint Thomas Aquinas for a 3:30 p.m. contest. Northeast-10 Southwest Division play resumes the following day with a 3:30 p.m. trip to Pace.
