Some visitors to London and its attractions are sourcing cheap, alternative, trend led souvenirs. However, these souvenirs are poor quality, thus feeding into the fast fashion frenzy of products that will soon fall apart. Therefore, this poses a threat to the traditional gift shop which can struggle to match the large-scale campaigns and slashed prices of certain high street retailers. However, all hope is not lost. Fast fashion is the world’s second largest polluter and, in our ever-evolving environmentally conscious society, consumers are clued up. There has been a shift in what influences a consumer’s purchasing decision and wasteful impact is now equalling price on the cost-benefit scale. Gift shops need to act fast. This starts with utilising their USP. Stay one step ahead by following the advice below!
PRODUCE SOUVENIRS THAT LAST Many attractions take their well-built souvenirs as standard. Shout about the world class quality of your products, with for example a one-year guarantee or your money back offer. The secret is to promote what you already possess, in this case, allow your offerings to be associated with longevity. Give customers a reason to trust and invest!
CREATE AN EXPERIENCE Create a USP that blows fast fashion giants out the water. Give customers what they cannot get elsewhere, an experience. Determination for change is highlighted through the multiple protests that have taken place over the past year, changing the focus of politicians’ minds away from Brexit and towards making the changes necessary to avert world disaster. Across the board, industries are adapting and reacting to the seismic shift in awareness and priorities of their customers - and the souvenir industry is playing our part in the eco-revolution – to find a better way. In this time of change and environmental uncertainty, we must realise that the world is still out there to be enjoyed and

remembered so it is no surprise that people are so eager to discover it. The desire to travel is stronger than ever, with growth in the tourism sector increasing rapidly. This is due to experiences now being at the top of many people’s wishlists. More than ever, it seems that people want to explore and have experiences instead of an updated wardrobe or the latest car. This shift in priorities has resulted in higher visitor counts to attractions all over the world and thus, our responsibility to encourage travel and the all-important memorabilia that goes with it whilst facilitating real change is here, we’re doing our best, in the way we know how... supplying sustainable souvenirs for lasting memories. The Souvenir industry is taking its responsibility seriously and has risen to the challenge by offering sustainable alternatives for the tourism industry. Our new ranges are helping get those multi use options out there to stay. It is also making it easier for gift shops to communicate their green ethos and credentials. For instance, why not encourage visitors to travel to your attraction by public transport through a variety of incentives and discounts in the shop and cafe and by selling a selection of eco products, including our bestselling reusable bags and drinkware to help them on their travels home!
