25 Years Of Valuable Service To The Community

T

his year is a milestone for Dan Berry and Berry's Freight.

Twenty-five years ago, in 1996, Dan Berry embarked on a new venture which would provide continuous and dependable freight deliveries to o u r M u n i c i p a l i t y. B e n Rodrigue who was the purchaser for Tembec, at the time, suggested that if he purchased a delivery truck the Chapleau sawmills would support him as the freight charges from other freight companies were getting out of hand. The rest is history.

Dan was not a stranger to our community as he operated Sloma Valet cleaners, out of Timmins, from 1984 to 2015.

Over the years Berry's Freight delivered everything from flowers to cremated animals including truckloads of

water when the community was in need due to a drinking water issue at the water plant. As Dan says, the only thing that he has not delivered yet is a baby.

Berry's Freight is not like any other freight companies. One could say that it is a personalized delivery service.

He has always gone out of his way to satisfy customers.

Although Dan only moved to Chapleau three years ago, he has been a part of our community for 37 years. Over the years, Berry's Freight has been known to support and donate to service clubs, organizations and individuals.

Michael J. Morris When I was news editor at the Chatham Daily News more than 50 years ago, my mother decided to come from Chapleau and spend the summer with me. To keep herself busy during the day, she decided to take a summer course in education.

The times they were a changing in the late sixties in more ways than one, and education was included. Mom, who had taught school for 34 years at the time became increasingly frustrated with the new thinking in education being set out by the professor. She taught a total of 36 years, 32 of them at Chapleau Public School.

One day the professor said in effect that teach er s mu s t " acco u n t f or indiv id u al differences" in children, and used some other trendy words in his lecture. Mom, who had not

"Don't you mean that all children are special with needs?," she asked. I don't recall his reply to Mom, but I do know the rest of the class agreed with her. After spending her entire teaching career treating each and every child as special with needs, Mom retired two years later after teaching at Chapleau Public School and at Kekabeka Falls, shortly after I returned home to teach. My mother was Muriel E Morris.

Mom taught elementary school and emphasized the child before the subject content always.

Obviously, she had no use for the labelling of children, or anyone else for that matter.

Let me give you an example that involved me. I was teaching economics at Chapleau High School, and almost all the students in my class failed a test. I was having coffee with Mom and pontificating against my class in typical teacher fashion. Mom stopped my little rant, made some suggestions including that maybe I scrap the course content as I had prepared it, and start over.

She also suggested I might want to think about finding another career.

"Start where the students are, not where you are," she recommended, adding that she didn't have the foggiest notion what I was talking about when I tried to explain the material on the test.

I took her advice and we started over. In fact, as Junior "B" hockey was very big in Chapleau at the time, I used a hockey rink to teach the factors of production.

Some years later, a school board member, on a tour of the school, stuck his head in Room 104 and asked me, "Is this there where they teach hockey?" I replied yes it was and offered to demonstrate. He didn't take me up on the offer.

Today, more than ever, given the Covid pandemic, I believe my mother was right, and I was so fortunate to finish my teaching career at College of the Rockies where I helped found a grad program in new media communications which was very student centred. I will always be indebted to Dr. Wm. Berry Calder, the president of COTR, who believed that the future is now in 1994 and supported me as we pioneered web based communications when many told me that email would never really catch on.

The advances in internet technology since I retired in 2000 have been phenomenal, and today I think of the possibilities for a real student centred education system where it is accepted that

OPSBA statement regarding the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Tomorrow, in schools across Ontario, students, staff, and school communities will be commemorating the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, which more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children were forced to attend between the 1870s and 1997.

“While acknowledging the severe impact of residential schools, it is important to also draw attention to the broader history and experiences of Indigenous people in this land called Canada over the past 500-plus years, since European settlement and colonization began,” said Elaine Johnston, Chair of the Indigenous Trustees' Council of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA). “Indigenous people want this day to more than just 'wearing orange shirts.'” “ We a l l h a v e a r o l e t o p l a y i n reconciliation, and should all be seeking to educate ourselves about our shared history,” said OPSBA President Cathy Abraham. “We must

learn from our past, and strive to repair relationships that have been strained for centuries, while actively seeking to improve the lives and circumstances of Indigenous people.”

“This day must be about more than taking a day off or even wearing an orange shirt to school or the workplace. There must be a focus on making concrete changes in our education system, and communities,” Johnston continued, “And that is why we have written a letter to Premier Ford and Ministers Lecce and Rickford, asking them to support the need for a Temporary Letter of Approval for Elders in Residence and Indigenous Language-proficient speakers to teach Indigenous Languages in classrooms across Ontario. We have also asked for a firm commitment to include Indigenous Education leaders in correcting the history books, and all curriculum, to allow for true engagement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The revitalization of Indigenous languages is essential for maintaining our culture, traditional knowledge, and history. Minister Lecce's announcement today about mandatory Indigenous learning being embedded throughout Ontario's curriculum is a step forward toward greater reconciliation in Ontario. What we will need to see in the co-development of the curriculum is true collaboration with Indigenous leaders, at every stage of the process, to ensure our cultures and perspectives are properly reflected.

The changes that we have proposed would be a demonstration that Canadians, as a society, understand the importance of maintaining Indigenous languages and culture for generations to come. There is much work to be done, but I'm hopeful the progress we've seen this week will become a catalyst towards an ongoing conversation that leads to real action in the years ahead.”

Genesis Metals Signs Exploration Agreements with First Nations and Further Expands October Gold Project, Ontario to 26,430 ha Genesis Metals Corp. (TSXV: GIS) ("Genesis" or the "Company") today reports it has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with two First Nations regarding exploration activities on its 100% owned October Gold project in the Swayze greenstone belt, Ontario. In addition, it has further expanded the size of the property by an additional 46 claims and 1,000 hectares; the October Gold project now totals 1,276 claims covering 26,430 hectares (264.3 square kilometres).

The Company has signed MOU's with both the Flying Post First Nation, part of the Wabun Tribal Council, and the Chapleau Cree First Nation. The MOU sets out a framework to facilitate Genesis Metals' exploration activities on the October Gold project. As a part of these agreements the Company has issued a total of 100,000 units consisting of 100,000 common shares and 100,000 common share purchase warrants which allow the holder to acquire an additional common share for $0.30 for a period of two years.

"We are very pleased to have this opportunity to establish a strong working relationship with the Flying Post and Chapleau Cree First Nations. Their support will be a key factor in being able to advance our exploration priorities on the October Gold project for the benefit of all stakeholders," stated David Terry, CEO.

Public Health Officials across Northern Ontario increase COVID-19 protection for all users of indoor sporting facilities Northern Ontario Medical Officers of Health continue to put the health and safety of residents first. Effective October 14, operators of facilities in Northern Ontario where indoor sports are played or practiced will ensure additional groups provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Northern Ontario’s seven Medical Officers of Health have issued instructions to facility operators under the Reopening Ontario Act requiring anyone aged 12 and older coaching, officiating, or volunteering at indoor organized sports to provide proof of vaccination unless a medical exemption applies.

Activities related to organized sports have the potential to increase COVID-19 transmission. Specifically, close contact, heavy breathing, long exposure times, crowded indoor spaces, and masks removed during physical activity, all contribute to increased risk of COVID-19 transmission. Requiring more groups to be protected with C O V I D-19

vaccinations will help reduce this risk while maintaining opportunities for sport.

Currently, the Province of Ontario requires proof of vaccination for all those 12 and older entering indoor sport and recreational fitness facilities but exempts those under 18 who enter only to participate in an organized sport. As per the provincial guidance, the requirements do not apply to workers or volunteers, including coaches and officials.

Under the letters sent today, northern Medical Officers of Health are instructing facility operators to require those aged 12 and older who coach, officiate, or volunteer at indoor organized sports to show proof of vaccination.

Northern Ontario Medical Officers of Health advise that we are currently in the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the highly transmissible Delta variant the dominant strain causing COVID-19 cases. The benefits of physical activity and socializing are critical to residents’ well-being. Requiring proof of

vaccination for those who support organized sport will help to keep sports running and protect all those participating.

Many local organized sports groups and teams participate in travel across Northern Ontario. As all seven Northern Ontario public health units are implementing the same requirement, there will be a consistent approach to vaccine requirements to help reduce the risk of spread and keep communities safe.

Proof of vaccination is not currently required for those aged 12 to 17 who actively participate in organized sports. However, the Northern Ontario Medical Officers of Health will continue to monitor the local COVID-19 situation and adjust instructions as needed.

Everyone aged 12 and over is strongly encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID19 as soon as possible. Municipalities, businesses, and organizations across the region are strongly recommended to develop and implement COVID-19 vaccination policies.

NDP statement on marking National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa, NDP critic for Indigenous and Treaty Relations, will mark Thursday's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day with solemn reflection of Canada's shameful mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples, and commemoration of the thousands of Indigenous children who never came home from Canada's Indian Residential Schools.

"Tomorrow, Canadians and Ontarians will come together in grieving the over 1,300 stolen Indigenous children who never made it home from Canada's residential school system," Horwath said.

"These were precious children that Canada made it a policy to forcibly steal from their families and communities, who suffered violence, physical and sexual abuse and malnutrition. We acknowledge the fresh pain and trauma of discovering the graves of more than 1,300 Indigenous children

this past year, and yet we know that for First Nations communities, these stolen children were never a secret. These graves belong to the babies who never got to grow up, the precious brothers, sisters, and cousins whose families never stopped searching for them.

“All First Nations people living in Ontario today are directly impacted by the residential school system and must live with the intergenerational trauma of surviving Canada's tools of genocide.

“This year and every year, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliaton must be an opportunity to move beyond words to action. A day for governments of all levels to make commitments to ensure justice, equity and dignity for Indigenous people. That includes fixing the broken child welfare system, ensuring all communities have access to clean drinking water and equitable access to health care and education. That means governments at all levels taking action to move back towards the path of reconciliation — a path Canada has long since walked away from.”

Horwath, Mamakwa and the NDP have been urging the Ford government to make Sept. 30 a province-wide statutory day dedicated to public events of mourning, reflection and education. The NDP has made the day a day off for its staff and operations.

"We must make Sept. 30 not only a day to mark on social media, but a statutory day away from work for all Ontarians," Mamakwa said. "It should be a day to gather for traditional ceremonies, to hold powwows, and to invite non-Indigenous people to learn and to grow — especially young people. It should be a day that grows in scope and meaning until everyone living on this land knows the legacy of residential schools, and holds in their hearts a desire to revive reconciliation.

“I believe most Ontarians want to be on the right side of history. I believe the time for change is now.”

“Premier Doug Ford and Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford have refused to make Sept. 30 a province-wide statutory day. This is a mistake. This is how reconciliation gets moved to the backburner by governments. I don't believe this would even be a debate if the graves discovered belonged to stolen non-Indigenous children.”

Ontario Helping Protect Communities Against Racism and Hate New grant program supporting community-based anti-racism and anti-hate initiatives The Ontario government is helping protect communities against racism and hate through the province's new $1.6 million AntiRacism Anti-Hate Grant Program. Eligible organizations, including community-based, notfor-profit organizations, can apply for grants of $40,000 over two years for independent projects, or $100,000 over two years for partnerships between two or more organizations.

Superior East OPP Lay Impaired Charges In Chapleau On September 8, 2021 at approximately 10:12 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 101 in Sandy Township.

As a result of the investigation, Brandon ERVIN, 25 years-of-age, of Timmins has been charged with the following: · Operation while impaired - alcohol or drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), · Failure or refusal to comply with demand contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC, and · Driving while under suspension contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 1, 2021 in Chapleau.

As a result of the investigation, Christopher DONYLYK, 30 years-of-age, of Atikokan has been charged with the following: · Operation while impaired - alcohol or drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), and · Obstruct Peace Officer contrary to section 129(a) of the CC. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on November 1, 2021 in Chapleau.

Under the new Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, our government is strengthening its commitment to Ontario's AntiRacism Strategy and advancing the mandate of the Anti-Racism Directorate (ARD).

In July 2020, the provincial government announced a $1.6 million investment over twoyears to create the Anti-Racism Anti-Hate Grant

Program.

The Grant program supports 'Ontarios Anti-Racism Strategy to fight and prevent systemic racism in government decision-making, programs and services.

The Ontario government has also invested up to $2.5 million through the Safer and Vital Communities (S V C) grant to help communities combat hate-motivated crime.

Organizations that apply for the AntiRacism Anti-Hate Grant Program are not excluded from applying if they have received other government grants for separate purposes such as the Safer and Vital Communities Grant, and the Student and Family Advocate Grant.

A Safe Hunt is a Successful Hunt With both small game and big game hunting seasons opening across the province the Ontario Conservation Officers Association (OCOA) would like to remind hunters to put safety first.

“Any hunter planning to head out into the field this fall should keep safe hunting practices as a top priority,” says OCOA President Matthew McVittie, “Wear hunter orange, respect landowners and other hunters and always be aware of your surroundings while handling a firearm.”

The OCOA would like remind all hunters to remember the following acronyms delivered in firearms safety ACTS and PROVE: Assume every firearm is loaded Control the muzzle direction at all times Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard See that the firearm is unloaded – PROVE it safe -

direction Remove all ammunition Observe the chamber Verify the feeding path Examine the bore With new moose hunting regulations coming into effect in many parts of the province this year, moose hunters are encouraged to review the Hunting Regulations Summary.
