As school boards and parents scramble to plan for children to return to class next month, anxiety is running high for families everywhere.

While a lot of focus is rightly being placed on the safety of students, less discussed are the very real implications on the rest of the family “bubble” (core group of people who maintain physical distance from others and can safely be close to each other during the pandemic).

Grandparents, who often serve as the linch pin of the family’s day to day operations, will be facing tough decisions on how to remain safely connected to their grandchildren as a potential second wave of COVID-19 hits this fall.

“Many of our Members tell us they feel like we’re back in the early days of the pandemic, when so much anxiety was caused by the unknown,” says Bill VanGorder, CARP’s Interim Chief Policy Officer. “Social isolation is wreaking havoc on seniors across the country.

We’re seeing increased rates of depression, cognitive decline and injury in vulnerable elders who have been cut off from their families due to physical distancing measures. Staying connected to grandchildren is key in keeping older people active, engaged and mentally healthy.”

Wilfred was an avid outdoorsman. He loved spending his time tinkering in his workshop, drawing cartoon characters, writing poems and listening to country classics and Mexican music. Wilfred enjoyed spending time at camp, especially with his grandchildren. He took pride in his craftsmanship as a skilled carpenter, which he was widely known for. Wilfred loved to tell a good story and cracking jokes.

Chapleau Tom Carr made "real estate history" Moments in the very early days of Chapleau by

Michael J. Morris Tom Carr and his family were very early residents of Chapleau who not only established a rooming and boarding house, but according to the Richard Brownlee Papers made "real estate history�

His boarding house was familiarly known as the "Pigs Ear" and was located across the street from where Smith and Chapple, now Village Shops, came to be located. The Pigs Ear was one of the very first houses to be built in Chapleau circa 1886 after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

But Mr. Carr made real estate history in the fledgling community when he sold his two lots on Birch Street to Mr. J. Austin for a reported $18 per foot frontage and thus turned a space which had been used only for a stable and cow yard into "real cash" according to the Brownlee papers. It may have been the first real estate transaction in Chapleau.

In the beginning, "Old Chapleau" was located on the hill where the Lady Minto Hospital was built and opened in 1914. A few company houses were built near the station for employees.

CPR yard at Chapleau 1886 Austin had their first store on the hill but in 1886 moved to Birch Street, and Mr. Brownlee who arrived in early 1886 and had his first barber shop in a tent on the hill moved to a lean-to beside Austin store.

The Brownlee papers do note that a group of young people were in Chapleau at this time likely working on the CPR. In 1886 the first Roman Catholic Church was being built where Collins store is now at Birch and Lorne Streets The first time, they decided to visit the church site in the Spring "they thought they would never get there. It was a long tedious walk through the bush" ... to where Collins store is.

As an aside before the church was built Mass was celebrated in the home of Mrs. Noel de Tilly where the priests also boarded. Mrs de Tilly also attended the altar. The Anglican (Church of England) and Methodist (United) churches were also built.

Referring to the first winter of 1885-86, the article says that "Those sturdy railroaders had a hard winter though, for the roundhouse --- had no doors. When there were snowstorms the section men had to come an shovel the snow away. There was no storehouse for oil and it was kept outside in large barrels and had to be heated before it could be used. For valve oil they had to use tallow. A large flat pan was kept on the stove and in this the tallow was placed to be melted."

Disease and the threat of fires was also a challenge for these early residents of Chapleau.

In 1886,the first post office was located on a lot which later became Pellow's store on Birch Street It moved several times but from 1897 to 1913 Patrick Mulligan took it over and it was located in the building which later became the Boston CafĂŠ operated by the Hong family. In the interests of full disclosure Patrick Mulligan was my great great uncle.

This has just been a glimpse at happenings in the very early days of Chapleau. from Mr. Brownlee's papers. It is one of the great privileges of my life that as a little boy in Chapleau, I considered Mr. Brownlee as one of my best friends. There were not too many cars in Chapleau in the 1940s but Mr. Brownlee had one and would take me for rides. He was by then retired from his barber shop.

Federal Programs change over time and not always for the better. One that has needed significant attention in recent years has been Employment Insurance (EI). As our economy and the nature of how many of us work have changed, EI remained at a stand-still. Now, the government has signalled its intent to re-vamp the program in a temporary manner. While New Democrats have been calling for improvements for years, it took the pandemic to magnify how riddled with short falls the program is.

The government’s temporary recovery benefits for workers could all fit neatly into the EI program. In addition to the Canada Recovery Benefit for self-employed workers and workers not eligible for EI, there are the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit for workers who are unable to work because they are sick or must self-isolate for reasons related to COVID-19, and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit for eligible Canadians unable to work to provide care or support for a child, family member or dependent.

that hadn’t matched the changes in Canadian workplaces. That left 60% of those who paid into the program unable to receive benefits when they found themselves out of work and made the institution of the Canada Emergency Relief Benefit (CERB) critical to our pandemic response.

Currently, there are one million gig workers, part time workers who are ineligible for EI. They will be eligible for the temporary Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) which is pegged at $400 a week but will allow people to obtain other income as they are receiving it As mentioned, New Democrats had proposed changes to Employment Insurance that would have better prepared the program to meet the needs of the pandemic. The temporary measures reflect some of that work but don’t truly reform EI. Our concern is that these are bandages that repair deficiencies which existed before the pandemic but will leave us vulnerable if permanent solutions aren’t found.

The truth is that much of EI will not change, including the minimum eligibility. The government is offering a credit of 300 hours to those who already had 120 hours of work (about 3.5 hours of work per

March 15th. Topped-up claims will be eligible for a minimum benefit rate of $400 a week or $240 a week for extended parental leave. Both numbers are less than what the CERB provided.

With the CERB wrapping up on September 27th the majority of Canadians who received that benefit and continued to report a need for financial assistance, will be automatically transitioned to EI regular benefits once their 28 weeks of CERB has been paid. But it’s not entirely clear that this is the route everyone will take since the government states that in a few instances, some Canadians who received CERB will need to apply for EI benefits.

The difficulty is that much of what is being promised is also being delayed because the government shut down parliament to hide from their scandals.

Ultimately, New Democrats are concerned that, instead of making desperately needed longterm changes to EI to help all Canadian workers, these changes are temporary. It's upsetting to know that Canadians who still can’t return to work because of COVID-19 are being forced to deal with a 20 per cent cut to their support. We are in the biggest economic crisis in a century and it will require more than tinkering to fully address.

Rappelons que le gouvernement propose la Prestation canadienne de la relance économique à l’intention des travailleurs indépendants et des travailleurs qui ne sont pas admissibles à l’assurance-emploi; la Prestation canadienne de maladie pour la relance économique, à l’intention des travailleurs qui ne sont pas en mesure de travailler parce qu’ils sont malades ou doivent s’isoler en raison de la COVID-19; et la Prestation canadienne de la relance économique pour proches aidants, pour les Canadiens admissibles qui ne sont pas en mesure de travailler parce qu’ils doivent prendre soin d’un enfant, d’un membre de leur famille ou d’une autre personne à charge.

Il est particulièrement urgent de penser aux personnes qui n’étaient pas admissibles à l’assurance-emploi avant la pandémie. Pendant la dernière décennie, on a vu bondir le nombre de travailleurs indépendants et de gens travaillant dans l’économie à la demande, mais ces travailleurs

n’étaient toujours pas admissibles à l’assuranceemploi, ce programme n’ayant pas suivi l’évolution du marché du travail canadien. Résultat : 60 % des gens qui cotisaient à l’assurance-emploi ne pouvaient pas recevoir de prestations quand ils se retrouvaient sans emploi. C’est pourquoi il a été essentiel de créer la Prestation canadienne d’urgence (PCU) dans le contexte de la pandémie. À l’heure actuelle, un million de personnes travaillent dans l’économie à la demande et à temps partiel et ne sont pas admissibles à l’assurance-emploi. Elles seront toutefois admissibles à la Prestation canadienne de la relance économique, une prestation temporaire fixée à 400 $ par semaine, qui permettra aussi aux travailleurs d’obtenir d’autres revenus.

Comme nous l’avons mentionné, les néodémocrates avaient déjà proposé des modifications à l’assurance-emploi qui auraient permis à ce programme de mieux répondre aux besoins créés par la pandémie. Les mesures temporaires correspondent à certaines des modifications proposées, mais elles ne réforment pas véritablement l’assurance-emploi.

Nous craignons que ce rafistolage ne serve qu’à recouvrir des fissures qui existaient déjà avant la pandémie et nous laissent dans une situation vulnérable en l’absence de solutions permanentes.

Dans les faits, la plus grande partie du programme d’assurance-emploi restera inchangée, y compris le critère d’admissibilité minimal. Certes, le gouvernement offre un crédit de 300 heures aux personnes qui avaient déjà accumulé 120 heures de travail (environ 3,5 heures de travail par semaine) à partir du 15 mars. Il offre aussi un autre crédit de 480 heures assurables pour les demandes de prestations spéciales (prestations de maladie, de maternité, parentales, de compassion ou pour proches aidants).

Ces crédits rétroactifs au 15 mars sont toutefois temporaires et prendront fin après un an. Les personnes qui utiliseront ces crédits pour présenter une demande seront admissibles à un taux de prestation minimal de 400 $ par semaine, ou de 240 $ dans le cas des prestations parentales prolongées.

Notons que ces deux sommes sont inférieures à la Prestations canadienne d’urgence.

Comme la PCU prend fin le 27 septembre, la majorité des Canadiens qui ont reçu cette prestation et déclarent avoir toujours besoin d’un soutien financier passeront automatiquement aux prestations ordinaires de l’assurance-emploi après avoir reçu leurs 28 semaines de PCU. Il n’est toutefois pas garanti que ce changement sera automatique pour tout le monde. En effet, le gouvernement a déclaré que, dans certains cas, les Canadiens qui ont reçu la PCU devront présenter une demande de prestations d’assurance-emploi. Ce qui complique encore les choses, c’est qu’une bonne partie des changements promis sont sur la glace pour un certain temps puisque le gouvernement a ajourné les travaux du Parlement pour tenter de faire oublier les scandales auxquels il est mêlé.

Au final, les néo-démocrates craignent qu’on se contente de ces changements temporaires à l’assurance-emploi au lieu de procéder aux réformes qui s’imposent fortement depuis longtemps et qui aideront tous les travailleurs canadiens. Il est regrettable que les Canadiens qui ne peuvent toujours pas retourner au travail à cause de la COVID-19 voient leur soutien réduit de 20 %. Alors que nous vivons la pire crise économique des 100 dernières années, il faudra plus que du rafistolage pour répondre pleinement aux besoins.

NDP call for Service Ontario cuts to be reversed critical for people with disabilities: Harden The NDP critic for Accessibility and Persons with Disabilities, Joel Harden, said that the NDP’s call for Doug Ford to end the long lines at Service Ontario outlets by reversing his $4.9-million cut and mandating expanded hours, is critical for Ontarians with disabilities.

Harden said many people living with disabilities have been forced to wait in long, crowded lines at Service Ontario outlets.

“Long lines have been snaking out Service Ontario outlets’ doors, forcing people to wait for hours, sometimes out in the elements.

These conditions amount to more risk and more

barriers for people with disabilities,” said Harden. “Doug Ford needs to reverse his cut to Service Ontario and invest in better service. We need expanded hours, including evening and weekend options, and hours exclusively for seniors and vulnerable people, so they’re not left waiting in long, crowded lines, risking their health and safety.”

The former Liberal government eroded service at Service Ontario outlets starting in 2012 by privatizing outlets, leading to lower staffing levels and wages, and longer lines. Ford has made things worse, slashing $4.9 million out

Ontario Helps Young People Along the Path to Lifelong Success Opportunity Council and Skills Training Investments to Support Underrepresented Groups As the province gradually starts to recover, Ontario is creating opportunities for young people through the inaugural work and membership of the Premier's Council on Equality of Opportunity. To further support disadvantaged youth and job seekers from underrepresented groups, the province is investing $2.2 million to help them develop the skills they need for successful careers.

Details were provided today by Premier Doug Ford, Todd Smith, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, and Jamil Jivani, Ontario's Advocate for Community Opportunities, at Youth Employment Services in Toronto.

"Our government is committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring everyone from all walks of life gets the opportunity to achieve their full potential," said Premier Ford. "To help turn lives around, I am looking forward to receiving the advice of the impressive members of our new Council and seeing the results of our investment in critically important training and skills development programs."

This morning, Premier Ford and Minister Smith attended the inaugural meeting of the Premier's Council on Equality of Opportunity to congratulate Chair Jamil Jivani and all of the new Council members. The Council, a key part of the government's ongoing COVID-19 jobs and recovery efforts, is providing an avenue for young people to engage with government decisionmakers and share ideas for building a diverse,

skilled and future-oriented workforce. This group of multi-generational leaders will be instrumental in promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and talent with a goal of decreasing youth unemployment rates.

The government is also investing more than $2.2 million to support eight unique projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) that will help nearly 500 young people and job seekers from underrepresented groups receive practical on-thejob experience in a wide variety of sectors.

As part of the government's overall investment, $500,000 will be used to prepare 100 disadvantaged youth with training in cloud computing and programming. The 12-week program is run by Youth Employment Services in partnership with Amazon, Accenture and Fast Lane training.

"These programs will help prepare our youth for the jobs of today and tomorrow through the development of in-demand skills like digital literacy," said Minister McNaughton. "Jobs can change lives and our government is committed to supporting our marginalized youth and ensuring they get an opportunity to succeed in this highly competitive global economy."

These projects were developed in cooperation with industry, education and training providers. They drive innovation, help employers find skilled workers, and help job seekers begin wellpaid careers.

There are so many ways to learn and to teach some of life's most important lessons. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the most effective of these is personal experience. This is not to say, however, that such learning is always pleasant or quick. Some lessons take a lifetime to learn.

Aside from personal experience, one of the effective ways to learn or teach life's lessons is through stories and parables; a method practiced the world over by virtually every culture and society. Parables are a short, simple way to help people understand a moral or spiritual truth.

Stories capture the attention of people of any age, stimulate thinking, help us to internalize concepts and help us to recall lessons easily because of the short story format. In the Christian religion, it is said that the Bible contains over 40 parables told by Jesus Christ.

I'm certain that many readers are well acquainted with the parable of the wise and foolish builders who built their homes on rock or sand. In a nutshell, the builder who erected the home on the sand did not have a

- Page 10 strong firm foundation for the structure. When the winds, rains and waves came, the entire structure collapsed because it was not a solid foundation to build upon.

But the builder who chose to build on the steady, reliable rock, had a harder go at erecting the structure at first, but it was able to withstand the same challenges that brought the other structure tumbling down.

I mention this parable because, in addition to religious meaning, we can also find important secular lessons; lessons that I wonder whether Doug Ford understands as they have bearing on the COVID-19 pandemic we are fighting.

Ontario's economy has taken a terrible hit. So many families, workers, employers and business owners are really struggling to stay afloat until things get better. While we will undoubtedly recover eventually, the rate and growth of economic recovery very much depends on what we as a society do and what our government leaders do. We must count on our government leaders to build an economic recovery plan that is build upon solid rock; not sand which is not stable or reliable to withstand outside forces.

First, consider the state of the small business community at this time. Small business is a major driving force to Ontario's economic recovery. Many small businesses –

right here in Algoma-Manitoulin - are facing the peril of a slow recovery and, as a result, are not bringing in enough revenue to pay all of their expenses, including rent. Initially Doug Ford wisely protected business owners from eviction because of the pandemic. But that protection ends August 31st. Struggling businesses will be at the mercy of their landlords.

It makes no economic sense to make small businesses vulnerable to eviction right now. Instead the Ford government should be offering more direct support, including rent relief, to save Main Street and protect jobs. Suddenly small business could have their foundation washed out from under them because Doug Ford refuses to stand by them. This is why the NDP has proposed the Save Main Street Plan which provides a series of measures to support small businesses, charities and communitybased non-profits, including: · A 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy up to $10,000 a month for three months · A utility payment freeze · A safe restart and remotework set up fund, which could help businesses install Plexiglas barriers or buy PPE · An auto insurance grace period for taxis and car-sharing drivers, established in partnership with the insurance industry and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority · A designated emergency fund for small businesses and entrepreneurs who have faced historic barriers to accessing traditional capital, as proposed by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce.

As well, Ontario's economic recovery is highly dependent on the safe return of our children and youth to the classroom. Doug Ford was eager to deliver the soundbite that his government will do whatever it takes and spare no expense to get our kids back into the classroom. parents can send their children into packed classrooms, where physical distancing will often be absolutely impossible, knowing it will put their kids, and older or immunocompromised loved ones at even more risk.

Or parents can choose to keep their children at home, and continue the superhuman juggling act they've been doing for months, knowing continued social isolation could have harmful effects on kids' mental health and wellbeing. For many families, this would require a parent to quit their job. Since the reality is that women hold many of the lower paying jobs, this will be a major blow to the strides we have made for women in the workforce.

The Federal Government just provided the provinces with $2 billion for the sole purpose of helping to get kids safely back into the classroom. But Doug Ford has dug in his heels with his penny-pinching policies. Even with this huge gift from the Feds, he won't spend the money necessary to reduce class sizes. He would rather spend money on a PR campaign to sell his bargain basement back-to-school scheme, than invest in ensuring school boards, schools and educators have supports they need for smaller safer classes in the fall.

We need a government that, like the wise builder, develops plans that are based on rock solid foundations, such as investment in our children, our schools and small business. In the last couple of weeks, the people of Algoma-Manitoulin have deluged my office with letters, calls and emails telling us that Doug Ford is basing the entire foundation of his back to school plan on an unstable foundation. Knowing this, New Democrats have proposed that the Government hire more teachers and education workers – including bus drivers, custodians, and educational assistants - and securing more spaces for physically distanced classrooms. And this is why we propose protecting small business operators a little bit longer from eviction.

Teacher And Education Worker Unions Taking Legal Action As Ford government Fails To Meet Health And Safety Obligations Following the failure of the Ministry of Labour to adequately respond to their requests for appropriate health and safety standards in publicly funded schools, Ontario’s four major teacher and education worker unions say they have been left with no choice but to file formal appeals with the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB).

The Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (A E F O), the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (E T F O), the Ontario E n g l i s h C a t h o l i c Te a c h e r s ’ Association (OECTA), and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) – which together represent more than 190,000 teachers and education workers – say they will each be filing an appeal with the OLRB arguing that the Ministry of Education’s “Guide to Re-opening Ontario’s Schools” does not take every reasonable precaution to protect workers, as required by Section 25(2)(h) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Representatives of the unions met with Ontario’s Minister of Labour and Chief Prevention Officer on August 24, and raised a number of concerns regarding the Ministry of Education’s failure to put in place all reasonable precautions for a safe return to school.

Following the meeting, the unions issued a request to the Minister of Labour that orders be made requiring the Ministry of Education to set standards around physical distancing, cohorting, ventilation, and transportation. It was also requested that the Ministry of Labour review these orders monthly, in case scientific developments dictate more stringent standards, and that school boards be given additional time if necessary to implement proper health and safety measures.

As of August 28, the date upon which it said it would respond, the Ministry of Labour had failed to comply with these requests.

The unions say the actions they are seeking are in line with those that have been put in place in workplaces and other public spaces throughout the province. The measures, especially those that would help facilitate two metres of physical distancing, also accord with advice given regularly to Ontarians by Premier Doug Ford as well as Chief Medical Officer of Health David Williams, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Barbara Yaffe, and many other health experts.

The unions contend that the government’s claim about its reliance on “layers of prevention” does not follow widely accepted standards and practices around workplace health and safety, based

on the “hierarchy of controls” from the U S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). In the August 24 meeting, Ministry of Labour officials repeatedly referred to personal protective equipment (PPE) for teachers and education workers as a key part of the government’s strategy. However, the NIOSH says PPE is only one of many measures and the least effective control against a workplace hazard. Other measures, such as adaptations to the physical space, including improved ventilation, or changes to policies and procedures, are more likely to reduce a worker’s exposure to the hazard.

The unions strongly object to claims by the Premier and the Minister of Education that by raising concerns about the government’s school reopening plan, teachers and education workers are failing to do their part to help Ontarians navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The government is attempting to deflect blame for their inadequate school reopening plan by creating division among Ontarians. But union leaders have a responsibility to protect our fellow teachers and education workers, and we know we have the support of many parents, students, health experts and others,” says AEFO President Rémi Sabourin.

“Schools and classrooms are unique workplaces, with upwards of 30 people sharing small spaces,” says ETFO President Sam Hammond. “Smaller class sizes would help make s c h o o l s s a f e r. S h o u l d teachers and education workers not be able to expect at least the same standards and precautionary measures as have been put in place in stores, offices, and other spaces across the province?”

“The accusation that teachers and education workers are not willing to step up and get back to schools is preposterous and insulting,” says OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof. “No worker in the province of Ontario should be expected to sacrifice their health and safety, especially when there are such obvious measures the government could be taking to reduce the risk and prevent potential tragedies.”

Ontario Weather Review August 2020: Storms Aplenty with Roaring Fires Temperatures and Precipitation Relative to the extreme heat experienced in July, August temperatures ranged from normal to slightly-above-normal across Ontario. Still, on many occasions, minimum temperatures dipped down to the low tens or even single digits.

Much of the southwest and central regions received more rain than usual resulting in anomalies ranging from +50 to +175%. The largest anomalies were reported in Grey-Bruce region extending into central Ontario, where some areas received over double their normal precipitation amounts. Parts of northern Ontario

experienced a dry August with precipitation anomalies ranging from -10 to -50%.

Ontario Releases Plan to Grow and Protect the Forestry Industry and its Forests Strategy will create jobs, encourage economic growth, while promoting forest stewardship and sustainability The Ontario government released Sustainable Growth: Ontario's Forest Sector Strategy, the province's plan to create jobs and encourage economic growth in the forest industry. The strategy will support the Indigenous, northern and rural communities that depend on the sector, while ensuring the province's forests stay healthy for generations to come. The announcement was made today by John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

"Our government has developed a strategy that will help create more good-paying jobs for Ontarians and provide greater opportunity in communities that depend on the forestry sector," said Minister Yakabuski. "At the same time, we are taking steps to protect our forests.

Ontario's sustainable forest management practices are based on the most up-to-date science and are continuously reviewed and improved to ensure the long-term health of our forests while providing social, economic and environmental benefits for everyone across the province."

The fundamental pillar of the strategy is the promotion of stewardship and sustainability, recognizing the importance of keeping Crown forests healthy, diverse, and productive so Ontario's forest industry can remain viable over the long term. Ontario Weather Review August 2020: Storms Aplenty with Roaring Fires Cont’d from P.12 hours, from just south of Goderich to near Stratford, and then gradually moved southward towards Lake Erie during the remaining morning hours. While Goderich only reported 30 mm, much higher rainfall amounts of up to 100 mm were reported via social media near Bayfield, 20 km south of Goderich. Many farmers’ fields were flooded.

August 9-14: Fires over Northwestern Ontario Forest fire emergencies were in effect for two communities in northwestern Ontario: Red Lake and Fort Hope (Eabametoong First Nation, 325 km north of Thunder Bay). In the case of the Red Lake fire, the municipality made a formal declaration of emergency due to the proximity of the forest fire (5 km away), necessitating evacuations. In the case of Fort Hope, smoke from a forest fire 50 km away was causing concern for many in the community. By midweek, as a result of a change in wind direction and fire-fighting efforts, smoke ceased to be a major concern for Fort Hope, and by the end of the week, rainfall ended the emergency over Red Lake.

August 14-15: Rain over Northwestern Ontario A low pressure system approaching northwestern Ontario from the US Dakotas brought significant (and welcome) rainfall to the dry areas of northwestern Ontario. Red Lake reported a two-day total of 57 mm, while Kenora reported 38 mm.

August 16: Thunderstorms over Southwestern Ontario Thunderstorms that originated over central Michigan during the evening of August 15 became more intense as they rolled across Lake Huron overnight and dumped local amounts up to 75 mm near Kincardine and even up to 100 mm in

Owen Sound. Local reports of flooding were received in communities along Lake Huron.

August 17: Thunderstorms in Eastern Ontario Another day of scattered thunderstorms across southern and eastern Ontario. On this day, hail and gusty winds seems to have been the biggest threat. Dime size hail was reported in a number of locations, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Hamilton, Petawawa and Ottawa. Tornado warnings were issued in the National Capital Region, however none were reported. Tree damage was nevertheless reported in some Ottawa suburbs, notably Kanata.

August 26-27: Stormy across Southern and Central Ontario As a warm front pushed gradually northeastward across southern Ontario, thunderstorms developed along the front Wednesday night from Sault Ste. Marie southeastward across Manitoulin Island and towards the Peterborough area of eastern Ontario. Significant rainfall amounts were reported in some areas, such as 81 mm in Gore Bay, 79 mm in Tobermory and 50 mm in Wiarton, with local flooding reported in these areas. Later in the afternoon of August 27, a line of thunderstorms crossed southern Lake Huron and southwestern Ontario and triggered a couple tornadoes: Mount Carmel, (Huron County, EF1), and Union (Elgin County, EF-1). Minimal damage was reported (a couple of barns).

Ontario During the early morning hours, a series of thunderstorms rolled across Michigan into Essex County. By 8 AM, rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm were reported near Windsor, with a maximum of 80 mm reported at the Windsor airport. Then, subsequent waves of thunderstorms continued during the afternoon, evening and overnight hours over Essex and Chatham-Kent counties as well as further north over Grey-Bruce, Dufferin and Simcoe counties, even eastwards as far as Peterborough. Total rainfall amounts over a 30-hr period were close to 135 mm in Windsor, 73 mm in Durham, and 46 mm in Peterborough. In the late evening hours (near 10:15 PM), one thunderstorm came ashore near Point Clark, in Huron-Kinloss township, and triggered an EF-0 tornado which caused damage to several residences. No serious injuries were reported.

Outlook for September September typically sees the beginning of the gradual decrease in temperatures of autumn; this year should be no exception. That being said, the temperature anomaly forecast for the month of September seems to indicate near normal, with precipitation possibly above normal during the first week of the month.
